Second hour of the program. Welcome Back Exes and Bros. Monday through Friday six until nine. Follow us on our Twitter handle xb Mornings and follow us on Facebook Exes m Bros. That's where we have our poll question for the day, and we have one every single day. Trent and I work at it. Who's the best free agent acquisition in Detroit? Is at Vladimir tery Sinka with the Red Wings, Tobias Harris with the Pistons, DJ Reader with the Lions, or Kevin Zeitler with the Lions? Should I should we Trent
have added a guy like Geo Orchella or a Mark Hanna. We did not put them in there for a reason. I could easily say we didn't want to be laughed at, but I'm not going to It's because neither one of them has done very well for the Tigers. You know what would have been even funnier is if you put Kenami Aida in there. I know I thought about it, not about that. First of all, we try to limit
it to three or four at the most. And second of all, these other three have yet to play, so it's really not fair to for them. I get to them to putting guys who are already put up stats and you can rest you know, we can recognize their impact or the lack thereof.
Anyway. You can vote as often as you want. It's on our Facebook page, it's on our Twitter or x as well, So follow us and let us know what you think, and we'll have the results for you tomorrow d eight o'clock we'll give you the results from yesterday's poll question a little bit later on today Baseball. We've been talking some baseball this morning about a
lot of different things. The appreciation for a guy like Jose Ramirez who became the third player of the modern era last night to have three intentional walks and two stolen bases in a single game. But in addition to that, you know, the All Star Game is coming up. It's not long before every team gets a break and the All Stars are sent to Texas. And I don't know if you saw this, it was really cool with Logan Gilbert, the starting for Seattle. Did you see the clip of him calling his parents?
Yes, I think that's awesome. There needs to be more of that in all of sports. That is a real moment that is not scripted. That is something that we can all relate to I don't care if you're Trent Valley and your single you, imagine what it would be like to call mom and dad and tell them about such an accomplishment. I don't care if you're me who've got four kids, and imagine what it would be like to hear
that type of news. The reaction from his mother and his father, the breaking of the voice, the admiration and pride that they have and saying that they will be there for him in his first It's awesome. I loved it. That's the kind of stuff you got to eat up. That is, that is emotionally transferable. That's what a great thing about social media or television whatever. That's what you're supposed to do right there, And it's one of
those show. It's one of those formative steps on the journey, right because yeah, obviously when you get drafted, that's a big one. Your first when you make the team, your first start, and then when you become an All Star for the first time, if you're lucky enough, that has to just be a top five moment in your career to make that phone call or the championship, Like remember, Jim Matthew Kachuk, We've talked about this before on the ice, hugging his mom and telling her what thanks for helping
me get here. Gave me goosebumps. I told this story earlier. I'll tell it again, not earlier today, but earlier in the in our show, maybe a month or so ago. Every year for the last thirty years, my family and I have gone to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. My wife loves it there. She was born and raised in the area, so she loves going back. We make it a point, my boys and I of going to Cape Cod baseball games. It's the best college players in the country
for the most part, playing on different teams at high school venues. They're not your typical high school venue. I mean they are really high level, beautiful fields, all right. I mean, East Grand Rapids has got it all. These beautiful Rockford's got it all. A lot of really nice fields here, but these are above and beyond. Anyway, We're watching a game last year and this kid comes out of the dugout, calls over his mom and dad, and he tells them he was just drafted. It was later
I think it was by the Braves. It's like a I don't know, late late round draft pick. I don't know exactly what it was. I don't want to speculate, but the point is the moment I wish I had, I wish I took out my phone and filmed it. The moment he hugged his mom and dad and the pride that they have and the tears they shed was pretty special. I just absolutely it was a warm, comforting moment. Loved every single second of it. Anyway, speaking of All Stars,
there is an article out there from SI. It makes you think, so I'm not saying it's wrong. I disagree with it, but it's a pretty cool. I like to read articles that make you think a little bit. They're strongly suggesting Paul Skens, the outstanding rookie, the former number one overall pick by Pittsburgh, should start the All Star Game for the National League.
Here's what they write, Paul Skeens has hit Major League Baseball like a lightning bolt, living up to every bit of the hype in the two months since his debut. That's important, two months. The rookie right hander has been rewarded with an All Star selection. He should be. He's been incredible five and zero in ten starts, two point one two ERA A whip slightly above one, seventy eight strikeouts only twelve walks in fifty nine innings. The twenty
two year old has been a dominant force, no question. They think he should start the All Star Game. I disagree. There's nothing wrong with having him there. He should be there. He's earned it. He's not there as a way to fill seats. He's not there as a marketing ployee. He's not there to run a promotional ad. He's there because he deserves to be there. Right, you would agree with that too, right, Yes, Okay, being there as an All Star is one thing. Starting the
game is another. Just because and SI writes this, just because he's on a trajectory doesn't mean that he deserves it as a starter. What Chris Sale has done. And Chris Sale just won again last night. I do not like Chrisale. I'll get that out of the way right now. Not a fan. But in seventeen starts, Chris Sale for the Atlanta Breys has ten quality starts and leads all of baseball and wins with twelve. Now, sometimes
wins and losses can be very misleading. You and I both know that his whip walks, hatings at walks hits per innings page is among the lowest in baseball at point nine to four. Derek Schoubl, by the way, along with Logan Gilbert, lead baseball with point nine zero. The argument in SI is for Paul Skins and the War at two point four. Well, Chris Sales is two point seven. I hate the you know, trying to play the numbers game in comparison, but what this is what these arguments have been
have forced us to do. Look, get the strike strikeouts per innings per nine innings pitched. Chris sal at eleven point seven. Only Garrett Crochet and Tyler Glass now are better. You may not like Chrissale. You may think he's part of the old Guard because you know he's still getting a dumb and he is thirty five. He may have been there before, and he's got plenty of All Star appearances. Seven that doesn't mean you take away from what
is rightfully earned. Chris Sales should be the starter for the National League of the All Star Game. Quick time out will dive into some football on the other side on Exus and Bros. After a brief time out on a Wednesday morning, thanks for being with us. Hot deal days are here at Liar

Let me ask you something you feel like football is getting that much closer. I do not that you're just hoping for it. And look, you can read on every website how more and more football articles, and it's hard to believe that it is, but it's true. More
and more football articles are coming out. ESPN Plus came out with something yesterday that caught my eye. Executives, coaches, and scouts ranked the NFL's top ten defensive tackles for the upcoming season. Top ten. Do you think Trent Ballely, any Lions defensive tackle is on this list? Probably? Not? Okay, defensive end, I could see it with huts, but defensive tackle, no, okay. So they have ten and then they have honorable mentions
and then they have also receiving votes. Who if any Lion defensive tackle Ali McNeil would be on this list? McNeil, right, yeah, okay, which category does he fall into? Top ten? Honorable mentions, also receiving votes? You know, I'm gonna say, fell into also receiving votes. I don't think people are really hip. Here are the top ten? Now this is I think this is a little bit more. Can I say legitimate? Because it's polling presidents, general managers, coaches and scouts. Yeah,
sure, it's the people that are evaluating talent in the league. Yeah, so I think that's fair. So what they've done, Look, there's no Aaron Donald in football. But what I like about this is they're doing this as a series. So they're going to have you know, they've done They've done running backs, They've done the defensive This is the defensive tackles today.
Later on today they'll have the edge rushers. Then they'll do safeties and tight ends and interior offensive linemen and offensive tackles, and quarterbacks and linebackers and wide receivers and cornerbacks. And that'll take us all the way through July eighteen, and you and I will applaud, standing up vigorously and saying thank you because all star break upon us and we want to talk sports. Right, Okay,
I think that's fair. Yeah, it is, certainly is. Chris Jones is the number one defensive tackle, highest ranking one, lowest ranking two. So there's not one scout, there's not one GM, there's not one president, there's not one coach who thinks he's any worse than two. He's consensus top two. That's outstanding, size, consistent, dominant effort. So hard to block. Number two is Quinn Williams from the Jets, highest ranking one, lowest ranking eight. So kind of right there a consensus top five
really good first step size and athleticism to overwhelm guys. Number three is Dexter Lawrence, highest ranking two, lowest ranking eight. He's of the Giants. Number four Jeffrey Simmons of Tennessee highest ranking two, lowest ranking unranked. That runs the gamut. He had thirty seven percent run stoppage win rate. That's impressive. Justin Madbuki of Baltimore is at number five, highest ranking two, lowest ranking seven. Christian Wilkins of the Raiders is number six, highest ranking
three, lowest ranking unranked. Number seven is Derek Brown of Carolina, highest ranking two, lowest ranking ten. DeForest Buckner of Indianapolis. Still getting it done at the age of thirty, highest ranking two, lowest ranking unranked. He's been pretty consistent since twenty eighteen. He's have fifty two sacks. Did you say highest ranking two, yes, lowest ranking unranked. Correctin a disparity there, Yeah, it sure is. That's the same thing with Christian Wilkins
highest ranking three, lowest ranking unranked. Men Buike highest ranking two. Lowest ranking, Oh that was seven, okay anyway. Number nine Kenny Clark of Green Bay. He's always been a good player. Highest ranking five, lowest ranking unranked, and number ten is Javon Hargrave of San Francisco. Highest ranking five, lowest ranking unranked. Here's what surprised me about the top ten. When I read this videvea of Tampa, I thought would be in the top
ten. I consider him a top ten defensive tackle, but I'm not a scout, GM or coach in the NFL. He's in the Honorable mention. So is Jonathan Allen, So is Jaln Carter. So is Deron Paine. So Washington's got a couple of them there, so is Cam Hayward, and so is Christian Barmore of New England. So, Trent, you're right. You didn't think Kleem McNeil would be in the top ten or even in the honorable mention. You thought he would be in the receiving votes. You would
be wrong. He's not in any of them. So Ed Oliver, Eric Armstead, Leonard Williams, Grady Jarrett, Jamont Jones, and Zach Siler are all in the receiving votes. So not a single contributor to this poll believes Alee McNeil's top ten in the league. I hope that gets back to Alee McNeil. Correct, I'm guarantee it'll get back to him, guaranteed. You want to talk about bulletin board material motivation. Yeah, and again I think it means a little bit more because it's not coming from neither you nor I
or a writer. Right, it's not fans, it's not media trying to spin their narrative. It's people that evaluate the league right exactly. So for example, CBS Sports came out with their top twenty linebackers not too long ago, and immediately I want to know what they think of, you know, the Lions linebackers. If at all, how many Lions linebackers are in the top twenty? Do you think one? Who would it be? Alex Angzeloni. Yeah. The answer, at least in this survey, at least in
these writers who covered the NFL is none. None like that surprised me. I didn't think they would be top ten, but I thought they'd be at least top twenty, right. I thought Angeloni would maybe sneak in around seventeen or eighteen. Yeah, just because it's the Lions and they you know, they've got a lot of eyeballs last season. Yeah yeah, right, so it shows you, like we've done this before. There were no cornerbacks for
the Lions. There's no defensive tackles, at least based on the survey from top executives and coaches, and now these NFL writers for this website anyway say there's no linebackers. I guess my point is you and I both can kind of read into that. You could tell me what you think of Detroit's defense based on this perception. And I use that word intentionally. This perception is nobody good enough in the defensive backfield. They don't think highly of your interior
defensive line, and they don't think highly of your linebackers. Fred Warner's number one, from Sam Francisco, Rocon Smith from Baltimore's number two, to Mario Davis from the Saints at number three, Quincy Williams from the Jets at number four, and Matt Mulano of the Bills at number five. Nobody else, like even Bobby Wagner at his age is at number nine. Always liked him. Hell of a player. Levonte David at number twelve. San Francisco's got
the best linebackers in football Warner one, Dre Greenlaw thirteen. There's nobody from the Detroit Lions on this list. I want to get to a text here because I think somebody we jolted something from somebody who was watching or following the Tigers a little bit last night. So Trent feed me with the text says, good morning, chefs. So disappointed with last night's game. I was thrilled we came back.
I can tie it. However, I knew we wouldn't be able to stop Cleveland from scoring the tenth. Also, I didn't miss Bias when he was gone. When people say or text in this regard, I knew they weren't going to be able to hold on in the tenth. Do you think that's based on just what they've done this year? Or do you think it's based on what Cleveland has done. Cleveland seven and two in extra inning games. Now is it the once bitten twice shy you feel burned by it all?
What is it that makes people feel like I just have no confidence whatsoever in this team when it comes to extra innings? Is it the manager? What do you think it is? I think it's a combination of all of it. I don't think people know of Cleveland's success in extra innings. I think they look at it and they say, I have seen what Detroit has done. This is an experience. Now this is your experience. I have seen
what the Tigers have done. I've noticed it. I may not know the exact record in extra innings, and I'll give you that here in a moment, but overall, it's a feeling. It's justified. They're four and six and extra innings. But this is It's funny the Texter bring this up, because last night I was thinking the exact same thing, extra innings. What does Cleveland do they play for the beginning, They're not bunting their way along,
They're playing for extra runs in extra innings. You can do that, or you're supposed to do that, or most shouldn't say supposed to do. Most teams do that. They're gonna do what they can to try and tack on the extra run. When you've got that ghost runner, when you've got the person who made the last out from the ninth starting at second base in the tenth, you get a chance if you're the road team to go for the big inning. While so many people say bunt him over to third base,
you can do that if you're the home team. If Cleveland doesn't score last night, in all likelihood, that's what Detroit's doing. But if they've got some good bunters, they're bunting him along. So then a sacrifice fly wins the game. And you notice a sacrifice fly got a run in for Cleveland and a run in for the Tigers. That's what you do. Cleveland didn't do that. Cleveland played for the extra not the big inning, per se, but the extra inning or extra run for the inning. That's the
way you're at least I think you should be handling it. But yeah, you didn't miss bias. I get it. A couple of nights ago, they had a chance for a decent inning and they won. But they had a chance for a decent inning bias grounds into a double play early on in the game. I can't defend him anybody who tries to defend him. It's defending the indefensible. You just can't do it. I've said this before,
I'll continue to say it, all right. I like the guy from a standpoint of the individual, been with him on the road, plenty decent enough guy, all right, And I think players his teammates like him too. But it's a results oriented business. You and I both know that, and he knows it, and the results are not there. Period. He's an easy target because of what he's done. When you're betting a buck eighty two and you have one bomb and you're making twenty three million dollars, twenty four
million dollars, easy to do that. So I'm not going to go there because I'm not going to defend him because you're on a hundred percent right, you didn't miss him. It's really no difference. It's no difference when he's in and when he's out. I mean, I know what people will try and tell you. I know what I know what the team will try and sell you. When he's on. He's special. And so hold on a second, stop, stop it. Don't insult the fan base. The fan
base is well aware, they have followed it closely. This is not you know what, You don't know what we're getting because you haven't watched him. He's been playing with the Cubs and he's been playing with the Mets. No, no, no, no. This is a situation where Detroit Tigers fans are very much aware of what this guy has brought to this team. So don't insult them by suggesting that they're not paying close enough attention and they're not
recognizing the nuances of what he brings to your franchise. Not true at all. Tiger's fans saw him in twenty twenty two and he batted two thirty eight many home runs, led the team in homers is seventeen, but most of those late in the season, when that miserable campaign was done. People saw him hit worse a year ago, and they're seeing him hit worse, even
worse this year. Stop. Don't give me the magician with the glove, the special defensive plays and all this other stuff, because it's falling on deaf ears. All you're doing is hurting yourself. That's it. Because guess what people also recognize that the defensive runs saved category is not there for him either as a Detroit Tiger, and the throwing errors get a little tired. So I'm with the Texter. I'm not going to sit here and beat up on
howve of your bias. It's almost it's become old hat and almost understood. And that's as big a concern slash worry as anything else. The fact that the fan base it's just understood. He's gotten to the point where there's no need to ridicule and complain about him because it's understood. That's pretty sad, and that tells you really all you need to know. It's no longer Hey, was this a bad signing? That's understood. We know it was.
There's no doubt about that. We don't need you to tell us whether or not it's a bad signing. We know it's a bad signing. We know it's one of the worst the Tigers organization and perhaps any team in this city has had. He went over for three again last night. By the way, think about this for a second. This guy was brought in here. I said, we're not going to beat up on Hovey or bias, And now I can't stop talking about him. But the Texter brought it up.
He was brought in here on a big contract in twenty twenty two, and he's making twenty five million dollars this year and he's betting eighth. Did any eighth in your lineup? Javier Bias, the twenty five million dollar man, the guy who makes more money than anybody else on your team, the guy who was supposed to be the catalyst. And again this isn't on Scott Harris.
Alavilla signed him. But you know what, in fairness to Alavila, in that class of shortstops, there's a lot of people who wanted Javier Bias in Detroit. Remember the shortstop class, right, it was Corey Seger, it was Marcus simm it was Carlos Correa, it was Trevor Story, and it was Javier Bias. I want you to think back and tell me, or be honest with yourself, who did you want, because really, I mean, Simeon's playing second base, so Seeger or Correa, and Correa has
been hurt a lot. If Korea has been in Detroit and hurt as often he has as he has been in Minnesota, you'd be complaining about that too, and rightfully so. But all those guys, those Trevor stories non existent because he's heard so much. All those guys hit at the top of the lineup. Correa is hitting two or three, Simeon's hitting one or two. Seeger's hitting two or three. Javier Bias this year has hit eighth forty four games. Forty four games. He's only played in fifty two. He's hit
six to one game. He's hit seventh seven times. He's hit eighth forty four times. Guys making twenty five mil. He's supposed to be your number two or your number three hitter. That is how bad it is. Incredible, but a good text because I'm right there with you. I don't even think about it anymore, to be honest with you. No, we're numb to it. We're numb to how bad it is. Yeah, that's exactly it, Absolutely numb. I consider it an automatic out. That's how I
look at it. He's coming up. Oh, okay, who's up in the next inning. That's kind of what I look at Yeah. Bathroom break, Yeah, bathroom break. Just I'm not let myself get disappointed. I'm not going to let myself get my hopes up high because you've got an idea of what's going to happen. He'll roll over on something, he'll wave and miss, I mean the whole slider and swinging and missing. I get it.
I'm more concerned, or more frustrated, I should say, I'm more frustrated at the damn fastballs that you can't catch up to, that you can't hit any longer, that you're grounding out he was supposed to. I understand there's some swing and miss there. He's supposed to get on base. The reason you got him was not just defensively, but the ability to have some pop. But a guy who you hope would get on base for you.
Look at the on base percentage, folks. Now, there's other guys who have struggled this year who have been good on base, Guys like Jeff McNeil, for example, like bobashett Bobaschetz had an absolutely garbage season. It's one of the reasons some people feel like he could be traded. I mean, his on base percentage is two seventy five. Horrible, absolutely horrible. Juan Soto leads baseball in on base percentage of four to twenty seven. Aaron Judges
right behind him, which is incredible. And considering the Yankees, you thought they were gonna be a really good baseball team, and I still think to the most, for the most part, they are. They've had the They had the worst June of any team in baseball. They had five wins in the month of June. But anyway, Stephen Kwant who's become a an All Star starter for the first time this year. He's the third outfielder of the American Mate, he's third in the league. And on base percentage, do
you know what Javier Bias's on base percentage is? I'm gonna guess it's around two hundred. It's to twelve. Yikes. Most players who are betting a buck eighty five have an on base percentage of two twelve, have an ops plus of thirty one. Average is one hundred. His ops plus is thirty one. His slug trent the slug is two fifty four. Right, if that could just be a regular average, I'd be happy with that. But for that to be the slugging, that's just pathetic. Is that nuts or
what it is? It totally is. And I think the point you're getting that here, Shep is when Javier Bias. If we can wind the clocks back to twenty twenty two when he first got here. All we want him to do was be elmago with the glove and hit for contact like you mentioned, give me two seventy. I don't even need you to be a three hundred hitter like you were in Chicago, right right. But he's gotten worse steadily every single season into try I don't know what it is, every single
season he's been in the league now eleven seasons. Maybe age is just catching up with him. But it's pathetic. But you knew he was going to strike out, and so did I. Yeah, that was a given. You can almost live with it as long as he's slugging, as long as he's driving the ball to the gaps and so on and so forth. The league leader in slugging is Aaron Judge at six seventy seven, and Javier Bias is at two twelve. Oh that's like a statistical outlier, isn't it,
Bud? That is so painful. Forget the average for a moment, because averages can be really overrated. Look at the slug and look at the on base Those are really important statistics. How much is the guy driving it, And how much is he able to draw some walks and get on base? He can't do either, can't do either one. And for his career he's a he's a two ninety four on base percentage guy. So it's not like
he's been great throughout his career. But to be two eleven, to be eighty points lower than your career average, I mean that tell me you're falling off a cliff. Without telling me you're falling off a cliff. Oh my god. Now you bring up the lifetime two ninety four, and I get it. But remember when he was really good in twenty twenty one, he was well over three hundred on base percentage in his career. I mean he's got three twenty five, three fourteen, three seventeen, three twenty six,
three sixteen. You can that's not bad either, like it to be higher, but it's not terrible. These are epic numbers the wrong way, just incredible. When we come back, an interesting comment from a Detroit Lion and how things have quickly changed for him and his outlook. We'll get to that when we come back on x'es and Bros. Right after this on a Wednesday morning, how proud are you huge? Here from my good friend Matt Golden.
