Guilty. I'm guilty of liking the sunshine. Dennis fifty him this morning on Axes and Bros. In Formatt Shepherd the Michigan Sports Network. It's great to be with you here, taking you in the June. Here on this last day of Maine May, we're gonna dive into some Lions a Lions Maine. Ben Johnson, speaking at OTAs yesterday, the Lions offensive coordinator, why he's
sticking around. He likes the sunshine of Detroit. Now. I you could say that you have been waiting for years to bask in the sunshine of the Detroit Lions. But that day that is now, it is the time. I know they didn't win the Super Bowl. I know they didn't get to the super Bowl, but as you know, last season winning two playoff games and getting to the NFC Championship game, it does feel like you were living
in a a mine with no light. And now you're sitting out of the beach in the Bahamas and that big globe in the sky, You're like, this is pretty nice as the water comes lapping up. That's what Ben Johnson said. And no, it wasn't so long ago. I think about two weeks ago. That you know. Dan Campbell said, is it Super Bowl or Boss for the Lions? And a lot of people are like, wait a second, you know, let's give him a couple of years here, But Ben Johnson, is he the best reason for the Lions if they are
going to win it this year to win it? Give me a reason that would be better than Ben Johnson? Where we start things out here eight six six, eight three eight forty eight forty three on the Meer hot line talking some Lions eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. You had the Panthers best thing the Rangers in Game five of the Stanley Cup Playoffs three to two. Now Florida leads at three to two. They'll play Game six
in Minnesota coming up on Saturday. You get the Oilers and Stars. They're tied at two. That game is tonight in Dallas. And then the Tigers. They shut out the Red Sox at Fenway. Jack Flaherty flirting with a no hitter into the seventh inning, six and one third no hit ball. He goes six and two thirds to kill Perdue, a kill Badou. A solo shot in the fifth was all the Tigers would need, and they're five hundred. They win the game last night five to nothing, and they got
Kent Maida on the mountain tonight at seven to ten against Tanner. How now, that's where we're at with the Lions, and we want to hear from you me a best reason for them to win this year after Ben Johnson, who will return. That's what we want to hear from you on. But that's not all I've got the I guess it's kind of a trivia question out there for you. I'm looking for son, dad, combos that played in the pros but with different sports. How many can we come up with this
morning? Eight six six, eight three, eight forty eight forty three. That is to Meyer hotline. I'll slow that down for you so you can take down the number eight six six, eight three, eight forty eight forty three. First time callers are welcome. You can also get involved via the text text sports radio one word no space between sports radio to twenty one thousand. You get that prompt and we will read your text on the air.
That's how it's done. That's the way to get it done. Now you know these OTAs, This is what we have right now to get to and Ben Johnson It was a a predictable question, but also a good one to at least think about. Ben Johnson for the last two years has been a name he could have left two years ago. I have the Carolina Panthers. He can say, wow, I want the Carolina Panthers. Look, when you get an opportunity, almost every coach that is a coordinator, that gets
an opportunity to be a head coach takes it. There are only thirty two of those jobs, and certainly you know about five to eight of them come free every year, and those teams are usually in really bad spots. Now there's a couple that can be different, and that's what Ben Johnson is banking on. But you go in you think you're gonna have a number one pick. You're taking your shot with your quarterback, like the Panthers did with Bryce
Young. Yeah, looking back on it, you know that's a terrible situation. And you know, Young doesn't look like he's going to be a superstar, at least right now. And so that was a good move. And then last year, so Johnson he's around, and then last year happens and this offseason the Commanders they got the number two pick again. You know, you're sitting there and had Jade and Daniels pretty good defense last year, a
couple other nice pieces on offense. But he didn't take that job. I didn't, you know, go through the whole thing into earnest And then what was it the Seahawks were flying out to interview Ben Johnson. I believe I had got this right. He called him up on the phone. Well, they're, you know, thirty thousand feet over Montana and said, no, you know, go ahead, turn that thing around. I'm staying here in Detroit. What Seahawks flew in anyways and interviewed the Lions defensive coordinator, but
they were didn't like that, not getting that Seattle job anytime soon. But
out of the point here is that Ben Johnson. And then yesterday he was asked about staying around here after passing up head coaching jobs for two cycles in a row, and he referenced Dan Campbell after the twenty twenty one season, and Campbell some story like what did he say that the Lions are used to being in the Arctic and dodging icebergs, and he promised that in a few years it would be like the Caribbean was on the horizon and it does feel
like the Caribbean right now, those nice sandy shores, beautiful water, all of that where the Lions are at. So but it goes back to, you know, Lions, and I was the first one to say, no, it's not bust this year. It's the NFL. Lions have a really good offense and they have the pieces in place to be competitive for a Super Bowl. Whatever that window is, I certainly think two or three years. And that's not only reasonable, I think it's, you know, two or
three years. I know, things can you know, slam shot. Things can happen. And you know at Cincinnati they're sitting around talking about our super Bowls wide open, our windows open for ten years. It happens all the time where all of a sudden it gets slam shot pretty quick. But things look as we sit here pretty good for the Lions. But you do have Ben Johnson. You could make a case that Ben Johnson is a big a reason as Dan Campbell. Campbell has to set the culture and the head coach
gets all the credit and everything else. You get a coordinator like Ben Johnson and those guys are usually gone and they have had If it's a luxury, our luck. They have had one of the best offensive coordinator coordinators with the pieces around him in the NFL, and they're going to have that again. That is the best reason for the Lions to win it this year. What are the other ones? And I don't know, should the Lions? Should you just be happy? Should you just be happy? That idea? As
a Lion fan? That idea straight ahead? Let me talk more about the Detroit Lions. Edis Fithian in for Matt Shepherd on ACIS and Bros. And the Michigan Sports Network. from you. You're talking about the Lions right now. I'm gonna a little bit of a deal on the audience, as this has been a couple of shows that I've done. Right now, I know all of you are not Lions fans. I know one season hasn't changed everything across the state of Michigan the last fifty sixty years. In fact, you know, I think that the Lions, when it comes down to having a team in your state, probably have more fans of other teams than they do with their own team because
of what they did for the last fifty years. Saved last year. So I get that, and in fact, I don't know the exact breakdown, but the further you go north, the more Packer fans that you have. Probably more Packer fans in the up than there are Lions fans. You start heading over to the west side of Michigan, you know, it could be both Bears and Packers territory. And I know by hearing the text and hear in some calls that there are a lot of Green Bay Packer fans out there.
I just you understand the Green Bay Packers have been one of and look at their back in the mix again this year. One of the best franchises in the NFL, the Lions have not, so I get that part, but nonetheless I'm still asking you could be a Packer fan and answer the question if you if you feel like this is the best year for the Lions too, even though they have a window of a couple of years with having Ben Jonson as their coordinator, is this the best reason for the Lions to win
it this year? What else would you put in that category? And then I have the the question for you here as well, if you should just be happy and you know it's okay to just say yes to this as a Lions fan after what they did last year. And the reason I asked this question is two weeks ago when Dan Campbell was asked about if it's super Bowl or bust. You know, he sit in and look at it like that, and so we all talked about it, and you know, I,
like you thought, no, it's not super Bowl or bust. It's a multiple year window for the Lions. Here, well, I was listening to a national host. His name's Lance Meadow, but he was responding to the Super Bowl or bust for the Lions, and he he indicated that Lion fans should just be happy, and his callers were saying the same thing. One of these Lions fans talking about Super Bowl or a bust. This Meadows point
was, is that the Lions last playoff win. He's just was going over the numbers and he said, look, Lions fans, you had one playoff win before this year in like sixty years, back in ninety one, and then he broke out being to the postseason in consecutive years. And it's not something that this is the part that I had not thought about following the Lions. The Lions haven't been to the postseason and back to back years since ninety
three, ninety four, ninety five. So you know, damn there, thirty years has been the last time that they've been the back to back playoff years, and then they've only done it twice in sixty seven years. You're gonna go back to the eighty two to eighty three season. You'll remember the Lions missed a kick against the forty nine Ers Eddie Murray, and that touched
off the forty nine Ers dynasty. But you know, three, ninety four, ninety five, those are the only two times in the last sixty seven years that the Lions have been to the playoffs and back to back season. So this metal guy was saying, look, Lion fans, you know, enjoy what you did last year. You know, don't talking about boss if you don't win at all. About being happy that you have a good team and you're in the mix. Now. Look, you could say that's exactly
right, which I am fine with. Now I don't, you know, to me, it makes the the urgency that much more. But I have to be fair here, and that's why I put this olive branch out to Bears fans and certainly Packers fans. Packers fans are used to having expectations.
Packers fans understand about winning the North and then you know, thinking about, hey, this is a great chance to win the Super Bowl and then it not happening, and then you know, having to a job and having the off seasons and going through the whole thing year after year, decade after decade. They they've been up at the top. So that's when I ask a Packers fan, like Lions fans, we don't understand it's been fun in the
sunshine, like Ben Johnson says, but we've never been here before. We're all like a bunch of mescobos that have just been transplanted down to the Bahamas. We're sitting around on the beach like this is pretty fun, but we don't know what to expect. I don't know. I've paused at different times in this offseason, and and so many times in years past, it's been like, oh that this you know, this is how they'll blow it. This is you know, why they're not a team that is considered one of
the one of the favorites. This is what they had. And most of the time it just came back to ownership that it will never change until they had that for thirty forty fifty years. It had to do with the general manager. Then throw the coaches and the quarterbacks in the mix. I mean those four, those were the big four reasons. And then you know, Sheila hamp dropped her surname good move, hired some Lions legends and was able to put that in the rearview mirror. But her most important hire was Holmes,
and Brad Holmes is that's how that's how you change things. Owner, general manager, coach, and quarterback. And the Lions with all four of those are looking pretty good right now. But like this guy said, I've been in the postseason and back to back years. She's done it twice in almost seventy years. Should you just chill on? I don't know the super Bowl talk? And again me not in you not being in this situation.
You know you shrugged your shoulders a little bit in years past when I when I had Lions fans with nothing to but no foundation to stand on, it didn't matter. Lions fans, this was their The off season was always like and I know that they didn't care that people were saying, you're the freaking Detroit Lions. What are you talking about? You know, you know, win double digit games or you're gonna win a playoff game and the host of a playoff game. So now you know the the sky being the limit when
it's actually in reach. You know, Lion fans who had built up the false promise themselves now actually have it in reach. I don't know how you talk to them, but did you just be happy about the situation that they're in. That's what we're looking for from you on Exis and Bros. I'm Dennis Fithian backing up Matt Sheppard today and I've been talking about the Lions right now, asking you
the best reason for the Lions to win this year. Also, you don't have to be a Lions fan, but should Lions fans be happy that they're in position to potentially make the playoffs again after only making the playoffs in consecutive seasons twice over the last sixty seven years? Answer that one anyway you want? Eight sixty six, eight three, eight forty eight forty three. That

Also, we're looking for those sun Dad combos in the pros, but with different sports sports radio is one word text that to twenty one thousand. You get your prompt and that's the way it goes, and that's the way it's done. Eight oh one Hended Hooker at OTAs, we'll discuss the Allion's backup quarterback coming up at eight oh one. Right now we go to the phones. Mark in gun Lake is on Exies and Bros. Good morning, mart Hey,
Danni's great job this morning. How you doing. Oh, I'm doing good. Thanks for calling over there on the west side of the state. Yeah, it's beautiful this morning. I'm a bus drivers my last day to day. I'm thinking, yay, I'm going up north tomorrow. So but anyways, I'm thinking, first of all, I like the Lions schedule. They got three of their first four at home and their only road games at
Arizona. They should be able to take that. So I'm optimistic that they're going to go for and oh their first four games, and they got the bye week and then they're going to go down to Dallas and demolish the Cowboys. But the father son thing is our beloved Lions. The I'm a rock name Brown. His dad was a professional bodybuilder, So that's I don't know if that's a sport for you, but it is to me, so we'll
think of that. I like it. It's creative and it's one of those Uh there's a few like big time wrestlers who's like James Larras who played for the played for the Buckeyes. His dad was was it butter Bean, who's a big wrestler. You know, you could you could say that one.
So that teitling works. And you know, I watched the I don't know if it was a thirty for thirty or if it was some special with Amona Saint Brown and his dad, and uh yeah, his dad is every bit of a professional bodybuilder, and and what an awesome guy to listen to. And you know that whole feature that was just great. And both of his sons they got great names. You know is uh, what's his other son's Equamenius which is an awesome name, and then a Monro the sun God.
And yeah, I like everything about Emona Saint Brown. You know, he was drafted later. He knows all of the whatever twenty seven wide receivers that were picked before him, and he just you know, he he can't he can't play any better than he's played in a couple of years here. Of course he was rewarded. But that's a great one. That's a great one. Mark. Yeah. Yeah, and you and if you think about you know, just like brothers in sports, what was it ten fifteen years in
hockey? Was it like Sutters or who was it that had like four or five brother kids? And the other shooters, the shooters have a ton Yeah, Hatcher suitors. I'm gonna be talking about brothers at one sport. I mean you could just go and I think the suitors might take the cake when it comes down to that, right right, Yeah, And I'm old enough to remember all the way back to the Phoenix Suns where they had Tom and
Dick Ben Eresdale on the team. Do you remember that or not? I don't, but were they were They're losing to the Celtics back then when those guys were on the team in the finals. Yes, yeah, yeah, that's when they had that triple overtime game at Boston. I think Ben Eresdale's were on the team that year when Gar Hurt hit that overtime or that one second turnaround jumper from thirty feet or something like that. It was a crazy game. My dad and I was watching that on TV, and I wanted
the Phoenix because they had two rookies. They had Alvin Adams and Ricky Sobers. I think those were the two rookies for Phoenix and they got to the finals and I'm like, Dad, how can you root against a team that's got two rookies in the finals. But yeah, the Celtics they had Collins and you know, all the other good guys and they finally won that. So but I got to start my route again. Here. I'm a bus drivers my last day and I want to listen to you the rest of your
show. You doing great, and I hope to hear from you and talk to you again sometime. Well, thanks for calling mark safe travels out there getting the children to school, and only the extra special safe travel to you, and then enjoy your time heading up north. Man. I just sit around talking about going up north for an hour straight. My mom has a cottage around Claire, Michigan, and so for me, that's where that's where
up North begins, at a lake called Bertha. We got about a million, Like I know, Minnesota they've got ten thousand, and we get ten thousand and one. I don't know exactly the number, but we get a lot and they're great and I love up North. And yeah, that gar Herd jumper, that's like where Luka Dancis was just end up shooting his threes from in the in the first half a little bit closer, but that was like the first highlight that I remember. I don't want to say it wasn't
it wasn't color. There probably were some video prior to that, but it seems like for me that the suns and that her jumper was the first one, and that that overtime double overtime special that you're talking about that I can remember actually seeing the video in color. So that's a good job. Mark appreciate that. How about the text? Ben is monitoring the text Sports Radio all one word to twenty one thousand. How does the text look this morning? Ben, Yeah, we got one from Ron and spring Lake. It
says Michigan get nine or ten wins. I feel like their defense will give the offense time to find their place. The Texas game looks like an early upset, which could make it nine wins instead of ten. And then he has something about MSU. It says MSU Historically, Relish is being counted out and being the underdog. I think they will surprise this year. And with a new staff and new attitude, this makes it tough to predict their wins.
In my opinion, this is a building team culture year for Michigan State. And that's yeah, Ron and Springer Lake. You know, it's tough to predict Ron and Bend and everyone else. Guys, if they just got so many new players. I follow college football as closely as anyone, and if you had a million dollars in front of me, it said ten, name ten Michigan State football players right now might be in trouble when it comes down to that. You know, so they would be they would be a
huge surprise. If they were a huge surprise. Seven to five sounds like a huge surprise, a big surprise, I don't know, huge. If they won more than seven games, then we would be getting into the territory of, you know, huge surprise. Big Ten Coach of the Year Jonathan Smith, what a turnaround? What a higher Where does he go from here? Let's you know, let's go crazy that kind of stuff. Are you're talking just eight wins? Seven wins? You might be thinking about that six
wins, you feel good. You go down. Less than that, you're hoping that you see some kind of some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. Tunnel probably what's your quarterback? Chiles? The only thing that I have to say about the nine or ten with Michigan, you're talking about an upset Texas is favorite of that game. And the whole thing about nine or ten nine wins is likely not getting you into that college football playoff.
Now playoff if you've if two of those losses were against Ohio State in the final game of the year, and then the next week and the Big Ten championship game, you know, maybe probably get in with nine three loss or with three losses but three losses and no Big Tel Championship game. I would say, outside looking into that twelve team playoff, ten wins is gonna get you in if you're Michigan into the CFP, and that's what it's about,
getting into the postseason, getting into the playoff. But twelve teams. So what you're saying when you say a nine or ten, you're saying it's either gonna be a good year or it's either gonna be a good year or bad year. That's what it's coming down to. If Michigan hasn't made a college football playoff, I can sit here right now tell you it's not gonna be a good year for them. Did not meet the expectations of things happen once
the season gets going. They can make it feel differently about that, but that's how I feel about it right now. I like that text from spring Lake. What else, Ben, Yeah, this one's a question for you. It says, Dennis, what happens first the Red Wings win a playoff series, Tigers win a division, Lions win the Super Bowl, or Pistons land number one overall? Go Irish. That's from Freddy go Irish. Huh. I didn't know we had a Notre Dame fan in our midst but that
doesn't surprise me now that I think it over a little bit. So Pistons the number one pick. You know, Wings winning a playoff series, the Super Bowl and the Tigers winning the division, Well that's a you know, immediately I want to take the Pistons and just throw them. I mean, that would be miserable. You know they're going to be in the lottery again next year, but then you know, hoping I wouldn't want to bet on
that one. I think the Wings, Wings winning a playoff series, Wings winning a playoff series, Now they would have if they could have got an extra point, they only need one more point or two more points, whatever it was, they would have been playing the Rangers and they would have got swept, probably this year getting in there, so you see how far they are away. But they get a goaltender and you know they got to be
They definitely are on their way up. They are ascending. They need When you watch these conference finals, if you feel like they need at least another line of heavyweight players, you're not getting there with with with Larkin and Raymond, You're gonna need another You need three big time forwards in there that could score some size. But in a goaltender. Uh So, I would say the the wings Tiger has been in the division. You know the thevision is
there so much for the taking, at least you thought so. I thought so heading into the season looking at it. And that's a little bit or a lot of the frustration as the Tiger sit here at five hundred, but being nine games back. The Guardians have been a gigantic surprise. But actually the Royals have been a bigger surprise. Kansas City with a excellent rotation and you know they they've got there. There's young players that are coming up big.
It's gotta be a little bit of a marah with them. But look at him. Those are the the two biggest surprises in baseball are both in the central. No. That's why it's hard to be sitting here talking, Oh, the Tigers next year could be that surprise team. Better that with the tax? Are we looking for some more? We got one more in just now. It's about the father son combo. It says, how about Calvin Hill and Grant Hill. That's from John and gr Hill Cowboys wide receiver.
And then the great Grant Hill, drafted by the Pistons. I believe it's the president. He's involved with the USA Basketball. He's not the coach, so is he the general manager? I like myself some Grant Hill. I like it when you get a little local flavor in there as well, bringing it around. So who is that one from? John and gr John
and gr Nice job, John. I'm with you on that one. So there's a couple different combinations, And that was one of those when I thought of this, the dead Son combos, different sports, but professionals that did come to mind, the Calvin and Grant. You know. Another one that immediately came to mind, at least for me was Popeye Popeye and his son Seth Popeye Jones, the Dallas Mavericks winning last night getting to the NBA Finals against the Celtics. One of their former players, a MAVs alum, Popeye
Jones. His son he named Seth, and Seth turned out to be an excellent hockey player. Little NBA NHL professional Seth Jones, who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks now drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets. There's another one for you. Eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three on the Meyer hot
Line eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. Yeah, the the Lions schedule was a big reason that was put out there by Mark and gun Lake that he thinks that the Lions could get it done this year, starting out with the Rams. I don't know if I agree. Like he was talking about four and oh, it feels like when a team bests the team the year before, beats them in a championship game, beats him in the playoffs, that team has that motivation and plays the next year's game with
that revenge for righting the wrongs of a season to go. Feels like I'm sitting here telling you that I like the Rams on opening night at Ford Field to take down the Lions, just based on that here today, a lot of things can happen before the opening of what is September the eighth Sunday Sunday Night game. Wow, Lions starting it out taking on Matt Stafford again and the Rams. What the little uh little sobering thought this morning for you.
I like the Rams in that game based on that revenge factor. I like that part. Then they get the Bucks who they beat last year. There's that revenge factor again. No, No, I think they're gonna go with to No. So I think they can get the Bucks. But I do think that they're gonna lose one of those first two. But and I would think it would be the Rams. But I think they'll get the Bucks at the Cardinals, I'm with you. Victory Seahawks, a team that beat the
Lions two years ago, and here they are. That's another prime time game. Love it. It is another primetime game, two out of their first four in primetime. So before that bye, when I played the schedule game, I had the Lions winning eleven games. I would have to go back and see Mark talking about four and oh. Was I think in two and two. I'd have to go back and look, but I'm thinking eleven wins.
But you know, I'll tell you what if the Lions start four and oh heading into the bye week, it feels like I might start planning a parade route. Guilty of being premature, Guilty of feeling like the Lions would be going to the super Bowl at that point. Guilty, I'd all, if you come up with thirty more charges against me, I would be guilty of all of that. So the Tigers have climbed back the five hundred.
In a way it's good and in a way it's bad. I'll explain that coming up straight ahead, still looking for your calls and lifting up at nine oh one, we'll dive into a little Tigers as well as continue talking about football and both college and pro. That's what we're doing here. I'm Dennis Fithian, Happy last day of May. You know, is that a thing? It is? Now Exies and bros. On the Michigan Sports Network.
