Good way to come back for the seven o'clock hour, the second hour of three here on Exis and Bros. Across the Great State of Michigan, Spirit of Radio, Spirit of Sports from last night, Toronto Stays Alive beat Boston to one. William Neelander two goals. Knicks advance, so do the Pacers. Those two teams will play in the next round of the NBA Playoffs, which I want to get to here at a moment, we'll get to your

techs. Sports Radio twenty one thousand, and I'd love to have your phone calls at the Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three. Across the Great State of Michigan. We are on in Traverse City WKAD ninety three point seven FM, The Ticket, Glad you're listening up North Salmon, Patasky in Charlot and WMBN one oh four point seven The Ticket Northern Michigan. We're on in Midland Saganaw Bay City on the mid WLUN one hundred

point nine and Gradling and Gaylord up North. Sports Radio WGRY one oh one point one FM on WKAD The Ticket ninety three point seven FM that serves Cadillac in Flint on WTRX Sports Extra thirteen thirty AM, and of course in Grand Rapids honor to be on WMAX ninety six point one FM The Game, which is where you can hear the huge show later on Monday through Fridays from three

till six on this great sports affiliate network. Look, when you look at the NBA, I used to believe you had to have, for the most part, not every single draft, but for the most part, a top five, top eight pick. Those are your impact players. In watching a lot of games this year, and I never had a chance. Haven't had a chance to do this in the past five six years because of Colin Tigers baseball. You're so wrapped up in your sport that you're just on the periphery.

Are watching the NBA and the NHL playoffs. This year, have had a chance to really dive into watching a lot of NBA and I notice that so many of these quality, high end players that we're watching right now, especially in the playoffs, were not top eight picks, like a two time MVP. If you're a two time everybody knows Nikola Jokic is one of the best players in the world, so saying that it's a bit of a surprise would be a stunner to most. I mean, he's a superstar, but

a guy who helped lead the Nuggets to their first ever World championship. Let him in points and rebounds and assists in their first five opening games of the series against the Lakers. He just drafted in the second round. He is a forty first overall pick in twenty fourteen. Jalen Brunson. Look what he did last night. Scored forty one and grab twelve and had twelve assists.

He is name it an All Star for the first time this year. Set a Knicks playoff record with forty seven points in Game four against the Sixers. They don't They're not the two seed without Jalen Brunson, right, would you agree with that? I hope. So it's a second round pick, thirty third overall in twenty eighteen. Are they outliers? Are they the exception to

the rule? We're seeing more and more of it, Tyrese Maxey. He tied Michael Jordan for most points scored by visiting player Madison square Garden when he

torched the next for forty six. Twenty players were picked ahead of him on Draft night in twenty twenty, and we're talking about a guy who joined Allen Iverson, Joel Embiid, Wilt Chamberlain, and Hal Greer Dana Barrows former Piston, as the only six Ers player to score fifty points, grab five rebounds or more, and dish out five assists or more in a single game. You're in the same conversation with Allen Iverson, Joelle and b wil Chamberlain,

how Greer, that's pretty damn good. No offense to Dana Barrows. Have you watched the Boston Series at all? Derek White. Now, he's not an All Star. He's not named to the All NBA First team or a second team. He has been on the All Defensive Team. Averages fifteen points per game, shoots close to forty percent from three. He was a twenty ninth overall pick in the twenty seventeen draft. These guys have forced me to

change my view a little bit that you can get quality later on. But it also reinforces how how important it truly is to have the right scouts and the right people making those moves. Reinforces it. See, I get caught up, and I'm sure a lot of other people do because the media, what does the media do. They promote Lebron, James Gianna, Sante Tea Campo, Kevin Durant. You know, I get it, Devin Booker for a good reason. Okay. I think it's been refreshing to see some of

these teams. I'm rooting for some of these teams. I like Jaylen Brown from Boston, but he was the third overall pick. I think I like some of the guys who are coming out of nowhere, if you will. I like Donovan Mitchell a lot. I think he's a really good player. But the guys who are kind of under the radar, the guys who were are now stars, and I think that's fair to say. And a lot of these guys are just mentioned for for sure, as jokis for sure,

Brunson, maybe Maxie a little bit later on. Probably not Derek White, but maybe he to a certain extent. He gets lost in the shuffle of Tatum and Brown and porzingis not Horford because he's been around a long time and I wouldn't call him a star any longer, but he used to be bigger names. How's that cool? Okay? They get lost in that, so maybe they are are more than just what like, especially him, maybe he's more than what he's showing right now. But he's perfect for them, for

the for the Celtics. See people when those guys were drafted. I'll bet you most people if they even were paying attention to them getting drafted, guaranteed the people when Jokic was drafted there who the hell is this guy? It's not like he got a lot of pub coming out like Luka Doncic did, right, so a lot of people are probably going who the hell is this guy? And understandably so maybe they think, ah, he's a long shot

to make the team, or he'll be a role player at best. How's that you've heard the phrase you can do anything you set your mind to. I mean maybe you did that or use that as a as a parent, or heard it as a kid, right, or you've heard the expression diamond in the rough. Maybe that's what these guys are. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I like it. I like to see more of it, and I'm hoping, and there could be some selfishness here on my

part that the Pistons eventually are able to do something like that. But when you see some of these guys performing at this level and it could be system. There's a lot of things. Look at Pascal Siakam. He's an NBA champion, He's a two time All NBA performer. Toronto drafted him in twenty sixteen with the twenty seventh overall pick. That was the Ben Simmons draft. Jaylen Brown was in that same draft. You know who is taken ahead of him. A lot of guys you've never heard of, guys who haven't been

played. You've heard of this guy, but Denzel Valentine was taken ahead of him. Who the hell's Wade Baldwin, Piston took Henry Ellenson exactly. You're going, wait a minute, yes, that's true. There guys taking you have never stepped down the NBA hardwood. But Pascal Siakam at twenty seven overall is one of the best players on an Indiana team that just upset in Milwaukee and can be a scary team to face and is one of the best offensive

minded teams in the entire league. It's pretty cool stuff. I think it's just something I was thinking about last night. Get your thoughts on it on the Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three back with more x'es and bros. Across the Great State of Michigan on the other side. We remind you that don't have to talk about what we're discussing. Anything that might be on your mind, something you may have caught last night, something that just came to mind. Feel free give us a call. We've got some texts on the text line Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. I do want to get

into the cost of hiring coaches here in a moment. But first, Ben, Yeah, we got from a text standpoint says if this team wants to build around Caid, and I don't understand why I would trade Duran and Ivy for a star in Morant. Ivy is okay, and Duran really is a nicer Drummond. Of course, his size can get dunks and thirteen rebounds. Morant is a star. Also draft the Connecticut Center to trio with Moran and Kid start there. What makes you think that Memphis would give up their star

for during an Ivy. That's the first thing that comes to mind when you make up trade scenarios. There's a lot of things that have to happen. Contract equivalency has to happen, okay, because there is a salary cap, and you have to be realistic. The Memphis Grizzlies spent the second overall pick in the twenty nineteen draft on j Morant. He's really good. Does he come with some baggage? Damn right, he does. But he's really good, imaging twenty two and a half points per game in his career seven and

a half assists per game in his career. Can knock down the three. He's averaged twenty seven, twenty six, and twenty five in each of the last three seasons injury problems. But you know, I want you to put yourself in the situation of the Memphis general manager, and you have Jaron Jackson, Marcus Smart, Luke Cannard, Desmond Bane, a couple of expistons, and J Moran, and you sit at a press conference in your home arena.

Camera's rolling, cameras clicking, reporters ready to ask, and you announced we've traded J Morant, like it or not the face of your franchise for Jalen Duran and Jade and Ivy. I want you to think about that for a second and then ask yourself, would you do that? See I like Jalen Duran, I do. I don't look at him as an Andre Drumming type player. I think we get caught up saying, oh, he's Andre Drumming because they're both centers and they both played for the Pistons. I think

Jalen Duran is. I don't know if he'll ever be as good a scorer inside as Andre Drummond or rebounder, but I think he's a very good young piece to this puzzle. It's not that I have anything against Jade and Ivy, but if somebody came to me with a package, I felt was very enticing and he had to be part of it. Sure. Look, they

just set the record for fewest wins in franchise history. There there's nobody on this team where you go, I've got to keep this guy except for perhaps Kate Cunningham, and for me, it would be Jalen during everybody else, I'm open to trading. That would be my opinion. And let's just remind people that is not always a negative thing. When you're willing to trade somebody, that means you're a quantity or or some type of peace that you find

value in. You can look at it as discarding a person, but I look at it like, Hey, you know what, I need something else. I have to give up something pretty damn good in order to get it. I'd rather keep Jalen during the Isaiah Stewart my opinion, But you would love to have that. Sure, Memphis isn't doing that. You've got to have a willing partner to trade. To me, that would make no sense none if you're the Memphis Grizzlies. Now, I love the fact that you're

looking at it from a hometown aspect. Good for you. That's you know, that's that's definitely helping the Pistons for sure. Here here's my second question. What is it you don't believe in regarding Kid Cunningham? Why is that he's Here's the I think part of the problem with Caid Cunningham. He is dangerously because he was one one in twenty twenty one. He is dangerously dangerously

close to being just labeled as a good player on a crappy team. And all the experienced losing you've seen with him, he's been I mean, I think he's for the most part, he's been pretty healthy. I mean, what did he play sixty two games this year? Ben sixty two out of eighty two he could have played more. He wasn't drastically hurt down the stretch. The team's just not playing him, and we're gonna play him. What was the point of that? You know? So they just felt like,

forget it, We're gonna just put him in street Cills. He played sixty four as a freshman or as a first year player. Right, Okay, so he had the one injury riddled season and that was season two. Were only played twelve games. Because this franchise has experienced so much losing and it can be so frustrating, frustrating for both of us or all of us. He's the face of it, and I think that's what people are looking at. I'm not buying in. Why not, because this is what they've done

with him. What is the when you watch him play or when you look at his seasons there's been three of them. What do you determine? Do you think he's I mean, be honest with yourself. Do you think he's an All Star caliber player? I would say yes. Is he going to be a quote end quote great player? That's a definition that varies. I think we use that word way too often. Who are the great players in the league right now? And measure him against which you think are great players

at the same position. If you can't, do you look at him as a point guard? Do you look at him as a shooting guard? How do you see Cade Cuttingham? And I also would ask if you're if you're a fan, or if you're a general manager of another team, would you want him on your team? So let's call him. You want to call him a point guard? Is he better than Jalen Brunson, Deer and Fox Steph Curry? If he's a shooting guard, is he is good as Devin

Booker, Anthony Edwards. The answer to that is no to all of those. But he's viewed as a point guard, and I think he's I think he's a very good point guard who could get better. You got to keep somebody. You got to have somebody to help steer your ship, otherwise you're chasing. I think he can make other players around him better and I think he's going to get better. But he needs help, and it's not just young help. Got to take a quick time out. On the other side,

the insane amount of money going to college coaches. We'll explain after this on Exis and Bros. Bill Simonson here from my good friend Josh Garvey. eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. What I'm about to share with you is it is. It's borderline depressing. Kirby Smart's a really good football coach. You know it and I know it and went back. He and the Bulldogs won back to back titles in twenty one and twenty two.

The SEC is the hardest conference in America annually, and yet he guided his team to an SEC record twenty nine consecutive wins, ended up losing in the SEC title game a year ago to Alabama, Kirby Smart had a contract that paid him ten point seven million dollars a year. That's a handsome price. Yes, absolutely, Georgia. You can call it a commitment to athletics, called a commitment to Kirby Smart, a reward for a job well done.

Although he was getting rewarded with ten point seven five million dollars, but the Georgia administration decided to tear that up and give him a new ten year, one hundred and thirty million dollar deal that was approved by officials yesterday. He's the highest paid football coach in the country. He's the first thirteen million dollar coach. Debo Sweeney makes eleven and a half million at Clemson. Lincoln Riley at USC makes eleven Calin de Boor went from Washington Alabama a big reason

he makes ten points eight seven five million dollars. Steve Sarkesian at Texas ten point six million dollars, Mike Norvell at Florida State ten point five million dollars. It's a lot of flipping money. Put it in perspective. First of all, do you guys know who Vince Dooley is. Vince Dooley was a highly acclaimed coach at Georgia. Head coach at Georgia a long time ago. He made fifteen thousand dollars his first year, his first contract at Georgia,

he was paid fifteen thousand dollars. He won a national championship, He had herschel Walker, he had Mike Bobo. Oh, never mind, but he had some really good players there. Fifteen thousand dollars according to him, that was back in the sixties, A long time ago. But has it really gone up that much? From fifteen thousand dollars to thirteen million per year? More perspective for you. Smart would be the fourth highest paid NFL coach if

he were out there. It's lucrative to be in college athletics. Andy Reid this year is going to make more than eighteen million. Sean Payton in Denver this year is going to make eighteen million. Sean McVay of the Rams this year is going to make fourteen million dollars. Mike Tomlin with the Steelers this year is expected to make twelve and a half million dollars. John Harbaugh this season for the Baltimore Ravens will make twelve million dollars. Kirby Smart is getting

more than John Harbaugh. He's getting more than Mike Tomlin. He is also making more than a guy like Bruce Bochie just won a World Series in Texas. Dave Roberts with the Dodgers LA's worth. The Dodgers are worth are reported three point six billion dollars and they paid their manager half, not even half of what the University of Georgia is paying their head football coach. We got done talking about the NBA a little bit ago. Somebody brought up Kate Cunningham.

Pistons Maddie Williams makes thirteen mil, same as Kirby Smart and Monty Williams. The fourth highest paid NBA coach, Peter Lavely Alett led the Rangers to a President's Trophy most points in the league. He makes five million dollars. Yeah, guys. In college basketball, John Kelapari, bill self, Bill self makes nine million blocks. Folks, it's all public. I'm not sharing anything with you that you can't look up yourself. College athletics. We all

know it's big business, but it's stories like this. And look, if I'm Kirby Smart, I take it too. You kidding me. Not begrudging him by any stretch. But you wonder why fans, first of all, why there's so much pressure and why there is so much expectations. Hey, man, athletes got to deal with it. Two, an athlete is making as much money as they are. We talked about this the other day. When they make it as much money as they are, there are expectations.

You as a fan are paying good, hard earned money. It's a lot of freaking money to go to a game these days. You're driving around Rockford right now, you're thinking, you know what, I'm gonna save up some money. I'm gonna go down to the ballpark, or I'm gonna go to a stadium, and I'm gonna say, you know what, I want to go watch this team play. You're driving around in Flint. You're going, I'm gonna save up what I can. I'm gonna go watch the Lions one

weekend. It's gonna cost you the I mean, it's almost like a vacation. It's like a weekend getaway for crying out loud, really super expensive. So when fans get pissed off, I get it. I think sometimes we can all be a little unrealistic. But when you have your hard earned money and things are getting more and more expensive these days with inflation, and you want to go. You want to be entertained, You want to see a win. You expect something out of a guy because he makes as much money

as he does. You have every right to expect that. And when Kirby Smart doesn't do what he's supposed to do, win a national championship. When you make thirteen million dollars, fans are livid down in Athens. I get it. It comes with the territory. I get why Kentucky was upset at John Calipari. I get why Kansas is upset at Bill's self. And they'll tell you, well, you can't win every single year. No you can't. But you know what, you make nine million dollars, Bill. You

make more than anybody else coaching college basketball. So when Kansas doesn't win the Big Twelve, when they don't reach the Final four, people are going to be ticked off, and they should be ticked off because that's more than anybody else makes. You're sending your kids to school. I got a buddy, his daughter goes to Georgia. Now there's a little difference situation there in Georgia. I mean, if you get a certain grade point average, you get

a lot of help. Some places, it's almost free to go to school there. That's just the way it is there. They make George's chuck full of money. I guess maybe it doesn't bother him as much as it would bother me. But thirteen million dollars to coach college football huge business fans get upset, And then you wonder why so many advocate for players to get paid. When a man makes thirteen million dollars coaching college kids, and those college

kids have to do what go to school? At the same time balance all the other things that go on in a teenager, in a young twenty year old's life, you can understand it. I don't necessarily agree with paying them per se, but it's hard to argue against it when a guy's making that kind of coin. Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. Ben, Who do we got with us? Yeah? We got David Hudsonville, Hi, Dave, how are you this morning? A good

morning, chef? Yes, this is a great topic, and I'll tell you. I'll tell you what even here here's a frame of reference when it comes to our state. I grew up in the middle of our state where a lot of my buddies when I graduated from high school, it could go to Flint or Landing or Saganaw and work in the auto industry and they'd make a good living, you know, quality life. Man. They had a brand new vehicle every year, they had a cottage up north. They could

take their family on a trip to Florida, you know. And that was the backbone of Michigan when Flint was thriving, when Saganaw was thriving Detroit. And now you look at what's happened over time those jobs. And my father worked in that industry for sixty some years, you know, as a supplier to the auto industry. But all of a sudden, what happens with that is the jobs went south, and then the jobs went to Mexico, and then the jobs went overseas. And you can look at the plight of Michigan

over that time, you know, and so forth. And it's also but look at CEO pay and look at the differences that have happened in that compared to the worker. And then all of a sudden, look at what we do now with athletics and some of this stuff, you know, I mean, it's amazing what people get paid for for what they adore, and these salaries that go crazy and then all of a sudden, is it a good

you know? I mean if you look even at the universities, you know has has what Tom Izzo gets paid helped Robin Freelick, you know, in women's basketball. But then if you look across the board at other sports, they're getting paid a pittance, you know what I mean, Because it's not oys, and it's not what people tend to care about. So I think it's also a societal issue, and I think it's something that probably frustrates a lot of people in the sense that, you know, it's hard as jobs

change and as the industries change. But boy ceo pay even when CEOs do a terrible job, and they still get a golden parachute to leave, or coaches or other people as frustrating. Man, Amen, it's going to cost Look, I have a daughter who goes to Michigan State. We'll just use that since you brought that up, right, I mean tuition. I'm not saying it's you know, necessarily wrong for Michigan State to do what they what they do, all right, I'm not going to complain about how much time

is a makes or how much Jonathan Smith makes or anything like that. But I do know this. I mean it gets. It gets costly to send these kids to college. And if you're fortunate, ye go ahead. I just finished call straight years of tuition there. Yeah, you know, so

you can relate. So yeah. And and the other thing though, too, is Michigan and Michigan State right now are letting in more in state students because you know, society right now, kids are getting married later and you have kids in that age, right and so do I. They're having less kids, there are less potential college students, you know, and so all of a sudden, what happens now the battle for these college students Alabama, that's any student you know, they admit you from out of state with a

four point for free, just like what you said about Georgia. But you're gonna see universities and small colleges go out of business. And you're seeing that because the cost of college is too exorbitant, the debt, you know, for a lot of people, and what goes on. You nailed it, man, Yeah, look at how long it takes. And thanks to the phone call, have a great weekend. Look at how long it takes for someone to pay off those student loans. If you need student loans Michigan State

University, we'll just use that as an example. What is it twenty two thousand a year? Which doesn't seem too bad, you know, if you're talking about tuitions and fees and you've got that includes room and board to a certain extent. My daughter lived off campus. She'll live off campus again next year. Eventually it catches up to you. It takes kids years. How much was it when you and I went to college? Not to sound like old guy, it sure as hell wasn't that. It took me a long

time to pay off my student loans. I had to pay for my own college. It's a good learning lesson. What are you getting out of it? This is a bigger picture type situation? But the reason why are there? It comes back to this, why why is the cost of going to college continually going up? But when those kids, a lot of those kids leave college, they're getting jobs that don't come close to helping them pay that off. Why is that not a bigger issue for people today? I've said

this for a long time. I've said we've got our priorities kind of out of whack. I love the system that we have in the sense that, you know, you can make a lot of money doing different things. Be an entrepreneur. Okay, my son's got a friend he makes money off stre how I have no idea. I mean, who wants to spend their night

watching somebody else play a video game? Is beyond me? Okay, but hey whatever, Okay, if you can make a living doing it and you're happy doing it, and you think it's a long term plan, God love you. Okay, go, I'm not judging here, just surprised at these kids leave college. I mean they're making jobs, they're getting jobs, but they're they're not high paying jobs, not enough for them to leave the nest, and not enough for them to pay off those college tuition bills. You

know, unless parents have planned. Fortunately we've planned at times for our kids. But you know, like he just said, it's got four kids, four kids going to Michigan State. Do the math. Twenty thousand dollars plus for four years. If you're lucky, eighty grand times four. Good luck retiring anytime soon. If you're helping your child, which we would all like to do, right especially if we paid for our own that's the ultimate goal. Where's the money? Why is it rising? Why the cost going up?

The costs are going up for kids to go to school, but the payoff isn't going up. Why does some of it have to do with coaches salaries, professor salaries, whatever. Somebody's paying that Bill Man Kirby Smart making thirteen million dollars at the University of Georgia is not coming out of one man's pocket, the chancellor, the president, the athletic director. No, it's

their fund. Where's that fund come from. It comes from the university, It comes from ticket sales and then some but eventually, at least some of it. I'm not saying all of it. Some of it is being paid off by those whose kids go to college. Right, absolutely, Again, you get what you can. If you're a college coach and your administrator is willing to pay you that kind of money, you're not going to go And I don't think it's a good idea. I'll keep the ten point seventy five.

I want you to take that three million. I want you to put it toward the students and lower their tuition and so on. So no, okay, people just aren't doing that. But there is a responsibility at some point, isn't there, And maybe we just don't see it. Maybe we just don't care. That could be the possibility too. What I care about

is in part my golf game. On the other side, we're going to give you a number and numbers of one of the all time great golfers, what he recently did at one of the most exclusive places on earth, and how it should blow your mind. It's amazing what took place here. I love reading stories about this. It goes to show you that when you do something for an extended period of time like this man did and was so good at what he did, the greatest of all time, the muscle memory for

as long as he's done, it must be something else. But we're going to talk about that when we come back the Golden Bear. He's got some designs up north, that's for sure. And I know you're listening in different places throughout the great state of Michigan. We'll talk about Jack Nicholas and what he recently did, even at his advanced age. It blows your mind.

When we come back on x'es and Bros. After this, you're listening on the Great State of Michigan on ex'es and Bros on the Michigan Sports Network.
