Jared Goff on his contract extension, Goff wanting to take the Lions to the Super Bowl, and is Goff as successful if he went to another team than the Lions and the Tigers offense. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Transcript

You know, I know you later aged handle most of what was the most important thing or things for you in this negotiation process to get in the still done. It was mostly security. I think, you know, you can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn't really the thing that was was ever something I was extremely concerned with. It was the

security and you know, the no trade clause and all that stuff. Knowing that all that was in there and feeling secure and then you know, knowing that I can now put that behind me and be excited about what's to come. Jared Goff talking to the media the other day, good question by Justin Rodgers and Detroit. Do what was the most important thing? And I think a lot of people might be really surprised to find out about the no trade,

the security he's got, the financial security. I mean, it's a four year, two hundred and twelve million dollar deal, it's a seventy three million dollar signing bonus. It's the largest in NFL history. He's the second highest paid player, not just quarterback, but player per year, behind Joe

Burrow. But to hear a professional athlete, look, I think there's a there's a misconception by many that free agents don't want to come here, athletes don't want to come here, and by here, I mean Detroit, which is really a reflection on the entire state of Michigan. I think that's bull crap. First of all, they're going to go to where the money is,

we know that, and a chance to win all at once. But I would tell you in my conversations with not all, because not even you love every place you've been, But the conversation with most professional athletes when they get here is very positive. They like it here a lot. They like the people, they like the area, and they like the fact that people care. So I think there's a little bit of a sorry free agents, they're not coming to Detroit. You're going to have to overpay them. And

then they give the example of Ivon Pudge Rodriguez. There's plenty of athletes who have come here, probably with the mindset of oh boy, I gotta go to Detroit, and then they get here and they're like, hey man, this is really cool. I was only here as a visiting player. I like it a lot more. I had a player for the Lions once tell me he signed here because while he was getting a tour of the facility and the stadium. The organization took his wife to various places in Metro Detroit,

including a very high end mall. They returned to Alan Park and the practice facility and she said, sign here, this place is great. It's very comfortable. He did, and he hasn't left. That's not the experience for everybody. I'm not suggesting it is. I'm just letting you know. It says something. I think it says something about Jared Goff. It says something about the NFL, says something about the Detroit Lions. That says something about you and the state of Michigan. That Jared Goff, who once was a

Ram. Look, he played his college ball at cal You know that as well as I do, Right, Okay, you know that most people love Los Angeles or love California. Not necessarily me, but most people will go out there. Oh, I love the sun, I love the beaches and blah blah blah blah. Right, so they're going to want to how can you say no to it. I remember going to UCLA's campus for the first time, and I was fortunate, really fortunate because a friend of mine,

Bill Clark, and I were getting ready to call Michigan UCLA. We get a tour of the campus with John Wooden. It was awesome. But with Jared Goff, I mean, here's a guy who goes to you know, he's from California or in Catholic high school in California. He goes to cal he gets drafted by the Rams. First over, life has got to be good. And then what happens, Well, he signs an extension. Seventeen

months after that, he gets traded to Detroit. And I'm sure the thought process right away for him and his family, anybody close to him is like, oh man, what a stark contrast. You're going from sandy beaches and eighty degree weather. Sure, more traffic, but you're going to a place where it's blue collar. Bring your snowshoes, bring your winter jacket, make sure someone's there to help you shovel the driveway. Who knows. Look how he's turned out for him, Look how he's enjoyed it. And remember,

his first year wasn't good, not as much personally as team wise. As a starter for Detroit, he went three ten and one his first year, only played fourteen of the sixteen games because of the injury. Then it starts to turn the corner a little bit, and by the end of twenty twenty two, how many people were going, Yes, I really like it here. He's appreciated here, I think as study and warm and pleasant. In certain areas as California may be, do they truly care about their athletes?

In the state of Michigan, they do. He senses it. He's not the only athlete who senses it. Plenty before him, any playing with him, and plenty after him already have that sense. But you should feel good that one of the most important athletes in this town. Whether you like him or not, whether you think the contract was right or not, he's important. I know there's plenty of you who think anybody could do what he does. That's not true, as you just heard with what we said in our

interview with Colton Pouncy. Everyone thinks you can just take one piece out and replace it with somebody who's less experienced. It's kind of like the Tigers situation that we'll get into at the bottom of the hour. Just take this guy out and put the other guy in. What's the goal? The goal is to win it all. Now you've set yourself up you set yourself up that if you don't get that championship, especially within the next couple of years,

it's not going to look great. But the goal is to get there and win it. Can you do that with just a plug in person because you're a little frustrated, disappointed and unsure of the contract, not with the options, not with Ryan Tannehill, not with Hendon Hooker, with a high end guy, You're damn right, But he could do that with a lot of other teams. Do you think remember our conversation yesterday. Our conversation was when I said, how many players on my team are wanted by the opposing coacher

manager? Remember when I was talking about that's kind of how I look at teams. How many of those guys do I want? I was watching Phillies and Mets a little bit last night, and I thought to myself, there's a lot of guys on those two teams I'd want, especially the Phillies. There's a lot of teams in the NFL that would love to have Jared Goff. They may have to adjust their system a little bit. You wouldn't be able to run certain things that a team may run now like Buffalo Josh Allen.

But there's a lot of teams that would like him, and he likes you, and there's something to be said for that because he got the no trade clause and that was most important. He had other things to say, and we'll get to those when we come back. On X's and Bros. The Meyer hotline is open for you eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. You could text the program by texting Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. On Xies and Bros. Bill Simonson, Here from my good friend

bet up to one thousand dollars. Eagle Casino in Sports were made in Michigan, made for Michigan's a twenty years old Michigan to play. You said before that that horrible thing or that whatever the tough moment when you got traded team moved on from you turned out to be the greatest thing that happened to you. I assume this sort of seals the greatest thing that ever happened to you. No, I see where you're going. I see where you're going.

Yeah, this is it. It's a good like I guess chapter closing of the last three years, if you want to say, but now I'm more driven and more fired up than ever two, go even harder and put the pedal to the metal even more to bring a Super Bowl to the city. And that's that's what's most important. And one day I won't beat the quarterback here and being able to look back on those days that I that I am and that I was with no regrets and and knowing I did everything I could

to try to make that happen. And obviously there's a lot of work to do, but if we're able to do that, that would be the ultimate goal. Well that's a great answer, isn't it. Jared Goff could handle himself. Say what you want about his play. For the most part, he's he's very direct, he's very honest. Hard not to like that about it. Welcome back, ex'es and Bros. Love to talk to you eight sixty six forty eight forty three. Before we get to that real

quick. Scotty Scheffler, who had a couple of weeks off since his last victory and he's won for the last five events and tied for second in the other one, was detained by police before the start of the PGA Championship. Did not realize this, but he was detained in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow that led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla

Golf Club before the start of the second round this morning. It was delayed the start of the round after a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside of Valhalla Golf Club there in Louisville, so the police officer attempted to stop Scheffler's car. Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to the golf club. The police officer went off on Scheffler said get out of the car, so he gets out. The officer shoves him against the car, places him

in handcuffs. They got it worked out. PGA of America officials they run the tournament, said Tea. Times for the second round had to be delayed because of the incident. Not with Scheffler's incident, but because a pedestrian was struck. He was trying to cross a road outside the gate of the club about five o'clock this morning, and he was hit by a bus in the lane that was dedicated to buses, and the man died at the scene. Scotti Scheffler is a regular guy, I guess, until he gets a golf

club in his hand. He shot a four under yesterday. There he's five back of the leader Xander Schoffley. I don't mean to go from a pedestrian death outside Valhalla to golf scores yesterday. Tough to make that transition. But the biggest part of that story is that Scheffler was actually put in handcuffs before this morning second round. But Xander Shaffley shot a nine under sixty two, bogie free, nine under sixty two. You're out there playing if you're a

guy like Sahiitigala and he hurts a six under. Rory McElroy card's a five under twenty. Feenal really good player, six under par, and you're multiple strokes back because Xander Schaffley shot a nine under sixty two, the fourth ever sixty two shot in a major. Shaffley's done it twice, did it at the US Opened last year. He's doing it at the PGA Championship this year. That's incredible stuff. By the way, you heard Jared Goff talking about

the Super Bowl. That's great stuff, man, it really is. Giants have Super Bowls. Have you seen their way to commemorate their one hundredth season. Their inaugural season was nineteen twenty five. Have you seen their I guess you would call it throwback uniforms, but that's such a cliche. It's an alternate uniform that they're going to wear two or three times this year. Have

you seen these? I complained about the Lions' new uniform look or or a chance for them to use a different look with the blue and all that other stuff. I am not a fan of the Tigers MotorCity. I can't stand it. I'm not gonna say I'm not a fan. I can't stand it. I don't like the Pistons going to black an orange. That's me. I understand who I am, and I understand I've got plenty of flaws. I understand that my way of looking at tradition and wanting to stick with that

tradition is fuddy duddy ish. New word for you, this is I have no reason to complain when you look at what the Giants are going to do. They tweeted out inspired by our history, built for today. It's hard to describe. I'm going to do the best I can. If you haven't seen it, Ben, have you seen it yet? Yes? I have? Okay, and they're ugly. Okay, So you're a young guy. You were okay with the Lions alternative jersey, Yes, I was okay. You didn't like the tigers, right, you don't like all uniforms. I

thought they were good. Oh you did like this? And what are your thoughts on the Pistons with the black and the orange, even though neither are in their color scheme at all? Yeah? Not a fan of those. Not a fan of those. Okay, these Giants uniforms. They have Bennett khaki pants, right, yes, space pants, khaki pants, red jersey with the middle being white and blue, a white stripe at the top, the number in white with a blue background and a white stripe underneath. Yeah.

Then there is a hint of blue at the shoulder pads, and they have a Michigan wolverine themed helmet, only the winged part is in red and the helmet is blue. It might be, by the way, they also have socks red at the top, white stripe, blue stripe, white stripe, then red at the bottom. Might be the ugliest things I've ever seen. It's close, it's in the conversation, kind of looks like a rugby team to me, it does. That's a really good point rugby. That's

exactly what it looks like with helmets. You got to be a badass to play rugby, all right. When we come back ag Hinch's thoughts on one particular player, we'll get your thoughts on it. We know you don't like it, but we're going to get your thoughts on that. And we'll take some texts as well, because we want to make sure we get those in as ex'es and Bros. We were talking about Jared Goff and how he wants to be part of this city, likes to be part of this city. It was tweeted out by someone that Goff said, so lucky to call this city home for the next few years. Truly wouldn't want to be anywhere else. So proud. Oh it's his fiance. So proud of this guy and lucky to be along for

the crazy ride. We love you, Detroit. Very cool, very cool, and thanks for that, Terry, much appreciated you, de man. Thanks for listening to ex Us and Bros. Monday through Friday six until night. Now. I would remind you this, we don't hear from Jared Gos's fiance that much. That's a that's a good thing. I think we heard a lot from the previous quarterback's wife that got a little old. And why

we hear a lot about Patrick Mahomes's wife too. It's at times where you just it's best to just move on, you know what I mean, Just it's okay not to be in that limelight. Let let the guy throw on the football around do just that. But that's a very nice text, a very nice tweet, I should say on her behalf welcome back Monday through Friday, six until nine. Our Meyer hotline is eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three. The text line is a sports radio twenty one.

Before we dive into something A J. Hinch said that is not going to make many Tigers fans happy at all. Let's get to a couple of techs because I know they've been on there for a while, Ben, and you've been waiting to pass them along. So go ahead. Yeah, it says golf lives here five months to a year at best, he will be right back in California full time after he leaves. Look at Stafford, he will never come back full time. First of all, we don't know that.

I mean Stafford probably won't. You're right about that. We don't know that. Guys who came and played who you thought would probably leave actually did stay. Calvin Johnson State, Barry Sanders State, Chris Bielman State for an extended period of time, and then he moved to Columbus and now has come back. There are plenty of athletes who've stuck around who aren't necessarily from here

and just decided, you know what, this is my new home. There's a lot of athletes who just they're not living in the city that they play in, Okay, And I'm not going to sit there and blame them for that. I think if I were an athlete I was playing, would I want to come back to the state of Michigan. Probably, But I'm not going to hold that against you know, Matthew Stafford right now, and I wouldn't hold it against Jared Goff, even though I don't know that yet about

Jared Goff. Uh. You know, there's more baseball players live in Florida and Texas and Arizona and California then they live in the cities that they play. How many Tigers live here year round? Let me think about that. None. So why is it? Why is it Golf's going to get your iyre In that regard, there's plenty of them. I mean, you've seen coaches, you've seen managers. They're not living here year round either. The general managers are. They're going into work every single day. Members of his

staff are because they're doing the same. Would that matter to you? I mean, if he won a Super Bowl and chose to live in California, for example, in the offseason and train there, would that upset you? Probably not. If he lived here year round and they won three games, does that make up for it? Hell? No, So I don't think that's a huge deal. You would like them to be around more often because many of these athletes, you want them to experience your state, your area,

even in the offseason. You want to see them at other games. You'd like to see him at the ballpark, for example. I understand that I can't say that I'm different than you, but I'm not going to hold it against him if they don't happen to live here year round, or they're spending plenty of money and helping our economy while they are living here any more. Tech Bett, Yeah, it says if Jared got traded to, say,

twenty eight other teams, his career would have spiraled. There was no Dan Campbell who solely changed the culture here, a will to win, team first, believe in yourself, and Chris s Pielman made this all happen when this franchise was at its lowest. Now, if Goff went to Andy Reid, yes he plays well, but Dan Campbell saved GoF from becoming Steve Bartkowski. That's from Freddy oh Man. Steve Bartkowski. Good poll there loved Steve

Bartkowski. He could spin it with Atlanta. Atlanta needs to go back to those red helmets. I've said that about Chris Pielman for a long time, so that's nothing new. And I do agree with you. I totally disagree with you that if he had gone anywhere else other than someplace coach by Dan Campbell, that he would not be successful. Totally disagree. There's plenty of other coaches in the NFL who could get the most out of Jared Goff.

I truly believe that, and I'm surprised you don't. I'm surprised you think that there's only one place that it works for Jared Goff, and it's because of Dan Campbell, who totally changed the culture. I would remind you that Jared Goff was with Dan Campbell when he won only three games. He is the quarterback. So there's no question Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes and Chris Bielman and other members of Dan Campbell's staff and Brad Holmes's front office changed the culture,

no doubt about that. Kudos to all of them. It's such a job well done. It's look, I don't want to get too sappy here, but it's very prideful that your team, this team is viewed as blueprint is way too far because it's more Kansas City and the other teams that have done it for a long period of time. I would say Pittsburgh's in that conversation. San Francisco's in that conversation, and they're still really good. But

the drastic change that has forced national people to look at Detroit differently. Is that fair enough? It's very prideful and we should be. However, Jared Goff was part of the culture change. It's not just one guy. It's not just one coach. It's not but just one general manager. They had to bring in the right people if you believe they change the culture. As I do. Part of the culture change is bringing the right people. Jared

Goff's one of those people. You're trying to tell me that without Jared Goff, Dan Campbell has the same success or vice versa. You think Jared Goff needed Dan Campbell to have success. What about going to the super Bowl with Sean McVay. How about that one. I know Sean McVay in the end didn't want him because they traded him, and the Lions are happy for it.

McVeigh did get to a super Bowl with Jared Goff, so he has proven he can win with another head coach and he could work just fine with a number a myriad of other head coaches in the NFL and have success. I do not believe that Jared Goff's career was saved by Dan Campbell. Do they accentuate his positive attribute without question? It's not just Dan Campbell, by the way, it's Ben Johnson two. Brad Holmes had to believe in him.

He is good enough. We make it sound I don't think Freddy means it this way, so this is not a Freddy, but we make it sound like Jared Goff wouldn't be anything but a backup or a last place quarterback in any other organization. That is such crap. He's a good quarterback. Man. I'm not saying he's a Hall of Famer, but he's a damn good quarterback. Ben. Back to the text line people could text us at Sports Radio twenty one thousand. All you gotta do is text sports Radio to

twenty one thousand. Ben'll read your text and we'll talk about it. Go ahead, Ben, Yeah, this one's over to the Tigers. It says who gets the most credit for this pitching staff pitching wise this year, Hinch, Rogers or Fetter. Great question. I tend to believe it's it would be more Chris Fetter. And the reason I say that it's Chris Fetter, it's Robin Lund. I think it's more than because they're with those pitchers specifically every single day. They are focused on what they do. It's kind of

like remember when the Atlanta Braves had Smoltz and Glavin and Maddox. Remember when they were a dominant team back in the day. And let's face it, they had some decent offense, there's no doubt about that, but they also had an incredible pitching staff, right and Bobby Cox was was the guy in charge. But they had some pretty damn good tutors for that for that pitching

coach or for the that pitching staff. Okay, and when you do that, when you have guys like that Leo Mazzone was was the guy Leo Mazzoni. Uh, and then he went to Baltimore, you have that knowledge. He deserves a lot of that credit since they're focused on one aspect of it. I remember when the Tiger's pitching staff was terrible. Everybody, this is way before Chris Fetter. God who is the pitching coach back then? Darn it, it was even before Jeff Jones. Anyway, everyone wanted to every

one wanted to blame the pitching coach. Well, if people feel like the pitching coach is an issue or the hitting coach right now people want to move on from Michael Berdaro whomever, some of the pitching coaches or batting coaches, then you've got to be willing to give credit where the credit is due. On the other side, don't you. I would rank them Fetter, Hinch,

Rogers, Carson Kelly also catches him too. So remember that, all right, Speaking of AJ Hinch and the Tigers, Hinch on the day off, knowing his team is under five hundred for the first time, also understands that this offense is horrible, period simply horrible. The biggest culprit, you would argue it, Isavier Bias. There's plenty of blame to go, but

it is primarily Detroit's infield. This is a team that ranks twenty second or worse in all the really important categories offensively, and if you look at them, it has primarily to do with the infield. They're getting production from the outfield, but the infield is horrible. There's no pop there, Torkulsenbanyez Bias, so there's frustration there. You're getting it from Riley green Mark, Canna, carry Carpenter. To a certain extent, they have probably been Detroit's most

consistent hitters. I think that's a fair statement. I don't know if it's going to end that way, but that's the way it is so far. In field's a different story. Cole Keith you got to throw in there, right, even though he's not playing every single day. But the most glaring hiccup in that entire lineup is Hoavier Bias. He has the worst on base percentage, the worst slugging percentage, and the worst on bass plus slug or ops in Major League Baseball, only Randy a. Rosarna has a worst batting

average among everyday players. Think of that. That's how bad it is. Now are you going to give wuld you give Randy a rose Arena the benefit of the doubt? Absolutely, Rookie of the Year ALCS MVP, an All Star, a guy who does a lot of things well. He was an All Star year ago. Right now. He leads the league in strikeouts and has way too many over the last two years. He strike out one hundred and fifty six times last year, one hundred and fifty six times the year

before. But he's a I don't I don't think he's a five tool player, but he's pretty damn close to it because he doesn't hit for great average and he doesn't have great pop. I mean, I think his career high homer's twenty three steal some basses. I wouldn't call him a five tool player, but he's a good player. You'd want him in left field for you on a regular basis, wouldn't you. Yeah, you didn't take it. Absolutely, So you think he's gonna get he He's going to break out of

that. You don't think Randy Arose Rain his start for Tampa right now is who he is. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but that's that's the feeling I get. How you or bias you think is already defined. Aj Hinch says about bias when people ask what do you do with him? Are you going to bench him? He said this, he's going to play a lot. We have to try to find a way to get more out of him. There's an occasional misstep here or there, but no

at bats. Giving away his at bats. Taking away his at bats is not going to be the answer, he said. He's got to keep getting his rhythm and timing and hopefully getting in a position to produce offensively. That's the goal. Doesn't have to carry the team, but we got to find a way for him to contribute. We got to push the right buttons. All fair enough, all something that a manager or a coach is going to say about a highly priced player. What would the follow up question be?

How long? Long is long enough? Right? How far are you willing to go with him? How long is that proverbia leash? People think it's really easy, all you gotta do is bench him? There are follow up questions there, How long do you bench him for who takes his place and for how long? What do you do after the benching? When do you bring him back? Then? How long is the leash? There are plenty

of repercussions that we'll discuss when we come back on Exes and bros. As we are ready for the third and final hour on a Friday across the great state of Michigan.
