Where are we at in society today? Come after me. I'm a man, I'm forty. Go ahead, make my day every single week. I put my freaking heart and soul into this. I don't go out there and laugh. It's not funny. Nothing's funny to me. I don't wanna go out there and get embarrassed on Monday night football. For everybody, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. So I ain't nothing changed from yesterday. Still the same person I was yesterday, and I got the same
thing for you that I had yesterday. You know why I'm here. You play to win the game. You don't play to just play it. That's a great thing about sports. You play to win. I don't care if you don't have any wins. You go play to win. You start telling me it doesn't matter to retire, get out for the matters. I wonder how many people when they listen to that open recognize the voices Mike Gundy Yoklahoma State University, Derek Anderson then of theear A Cardinals, and Marshawn Lynch.
Of course, in between the movie clips there welcome everybody out of Friday. You made it, man, you made it to the end of the week. Way to go, Happy for you, Happy for us too. Ben is our producer on Matt Shepard. This is Exes and Bros. We're with you from six until nine Monday through Friday throughout the great state of Michigan, and the Meyer Hotline welcomes you as well. Eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. The text line is sports Radio to twenty one thousand.
Colton Pouncy. We talked to yesterday he of the athletic covers the Lions. Really good conversation in the eight o'clock hour. We will replay that at the bottom of this hour in case you didn't have a chance to listen to it at all. Tigers had the day off yesterday. They are in Arizona for the first of a three game series in the first of a six game road trip starting tonight. Trek Scoob gets the call. Then it'll be Jack Flaherty, then Matt Manning. In the series, Detroit has dropped four straight
series. They have dropped seven of ten games. Overall. The Diamondbacks are two games under five hundred, but they have won seven of their last ten coming in. These are the games where you look for your ace, right, What does it mean to be an ace? Aces are guys like Justin Ferlander, Jack Morris, Denny McClain, slash Mickey Lolich. Those are the aces in Tiger's history, Hal Newhouser, let's not go back too far, right, I don't want to spoil it too much, but those are the
aces. The aces are the guys who are supposed to stop streaks. Trek Skugbel has become that for Tigers fans, and justifiably so. He's that good. Not sure I trust anybody else on this starting staff to do what we think is Trek Scubel will do tonight, or that we're asking him to do tonight. He is a guy who I think most Tigers fans completely trust. Stop me if I'm wrong there, but I think when hea'ts on the mound, Tiger's fans look at it and say, we're winning tonight, or we've
got a really good chance at winning tonight. But here's the thing with most of your starters, now that Kentomaieta is on the shelf, with most of these starters, if not all, shouldn't you feel that way after the way they have pitched so far? I would guess that's not where your trust is necessarily misplaced. Your your trust is valid there. The trust in the offense is where you might get misplaced. And we've gone over that time and time
again. What you have to wonder is, at what point in a baseball season. I don't think it's yet, but we're getting precariously close. At what point during the season does the front office go it ain't working, time to make a move and do it quickly. As you look at what teams are doing now, neither you nor I expected the Tigers to do with the Phillies have done. For example, Phillies have thirty one wins in the National League, most of anybody. They lost yesterday to the Mets in eleven innings.
I'm not sure you expected them to be where the Yankees are. Yankees have thirty wins after shutting out Minnesota again last night or yesterday five nothing Clark Schmidt for crying out loud of all people, a career high eight shutout innings, eight strikeouts, no walks. But they got some clutch hits. Volpie with a home run, Taurus with an RBI doubled the left center field. You can look at the box score. For the rest line is they got
their thirtieth win last night. They have proven so far that they are the best team in the American League. Baltimore's right there with them. Cleveland win wise, is right there with them. But I'm not buying into Cleveland just yet, which is kind of unfortunate and it's really not fair, but that's just how I feel right now. Cleveland has earned your respect because of what they've done. You've got fifteen roadkills so far this year. That's impressive.
Only the Yankees have more in the American League and in Baseball because the Phillies have fifteen roadkills and that is tied with Cleveland. I don't think you expected the Tigers to do with the Dodgers are doing. But you know what, I don't think it's far fetched to have believed what Milwaukee has done that Detroit could not have done the same thing. Minnesota at twenty four nineteen wouldn't have been out of reach, would it. I don't think. So. They're
below five hundred, you know that, and it's frustrating as hell. So they get Arizona tonight. Aj Hinch has made a statement about a player that has become toxic. In fact, I would argue I don't think I don't think he can get it back with Tigers fans. So we'll talk about that coming up. Meanwhile, last night in hockey, the Rangers beat Carolina five to three. They came from three to one down in the third period to eliminate the Hurricanes in six games. Has he got a chance to watch any
of that? It's a really good game, Chris. He's the guy who led them back. The assistant captain scored the natural hat trick in the period to lead New York into the Eastern Conference Finals. Crid joins two other Ranger greats as the only Rangers to score three goals in a period in a playoff game? Who are they? Mark Messier the Guarantee Game nineteen ninety four against New Jersey and Wayne Gretzky three years later. Speaking of Gretzky and Messier,
Edmonton, where they won? Did they win three cups or four? Four? Loses the lead? In Vancouver they were up twice and they fell three to two to the Caducks. So Vancouver now leads three games to two. One game. In the NBA last night, Minnesota used a twenty to nothing first half run and went on to blow out Denver one fifteen to seventy. I know you're shaking your head, going, how in the hell did that happen? Seriously, you're going, wait, this is the defending world champions.
Anthony Edwards scored twenty seven to lead the Wolves, most of that late. The Nuggets shoot just thirty percent. It shows you that even the best of the best, and until somebody knocks them off, they are the best. It shows you that they can have all kinds of issues at least on any given The bigger the night, usually the better the team's play. Who are expected to be that challenging championship contender. Nikola Jokic had twenty two in
the lost nine rebounds. I went nine of nineteen from the floor. They rested him to a certain extent. He did play thirty six minutes because Minnesota had pulled away so comfortably, especially in the fourth where the Timberwolves outscored him twenty nine to nine. So there's your headlines right there. Jared Goff spoke to the media yesterday. We'll talk about that coming up, but we want to get to what aj Hinch said about one specific player that I think has
a lot of Tigers fans shaking their head. We'll talk about that when we come back on Excess and Bros. After this across the Great State of Michigan. We played for the three that rushing field. With the game on the line, I'm herming more Lions all pro wide receiver now with Eagle Casino in Sports and the sportsbook at from Sore and Eagle anywhere I'm at. I'm still in the game. That's right, up to one thousand dollars for a risk free bet on your next favorite underdog Harley our prop Eagle Casino in Sports, made in Michigan, made for Michigan. Must be twenty or older in Michigan. Are playing Nicola? How do you guys wash? You know, just kind of wash a game like this away when you know just kind of nothing goes right for you and everything goes right for them. I think we shouldn't. I think we need to sink in like it's a great loss. They beat us, they
destroy us, and we should learn it. And you need to keep the respect, you know, when they they came out and actually we had it like nine two Exclora right, fun didn't look good for them in that period, you know, but since then it was it was a one team show. So I'm gonna I'm gonna take this as a great loss. Well and Nicole that and that's Nikola Jokic. I'm gonna take it as a great loss. Yeah, yeah, that's really the only way you can take it.
Welcome back Exces and Bros. Monday through Friday six until nine. Jokic was pretty darn good, but it was much too little, too late. One fifteen seventy, Minnesota blows up Denver. I think that's the hard part for
fans. I know sometimes it is for me to recognize the other teams, I don't want to say greatness, to recognize what they can do, what they are capable love, and that they could actually do it against your team is pretty hard because we all like to think realistically, Now, if you're a really good team, we like to think that our team is the best. Our team is the one that should be doing what the other team is doing to it, especially if they wont a champion. What's that phrase,
never underestimate the heart of a champion. Well, Denver was down to nothing in the series Minnesota, or I should say, yeah, Denver is down to nothing in the series and the Nuggets respond with three consecutive wins, and then what do you do. You're like, this Minnesota team, look, you got to give them some love. They won fifty six games. Give them some love. You know, damn well, they're not going quietly either way, whether it be Denver winning the series or Minnesota winning the series.
A good team's coming out right, sure. Still to be embarrassed by forty five is ridiculous. I mean, Minnesota Leby has meant is fifty in that one. Anyway. I know you don't want to talk Denver Nuggets in Minnesota Timberwolves. I don't blame you. That's not something we're going to talk about. Just a quick aside there, aj Hinch. With the Tigers dropping below five hundo for the first time this year, there are questions from Tigers fans,
and good questions, understandable, realistic, fair questions. How do you fix the offense? Number one? That's your big picture, right. It shouldn't be on one specific player because nobody knows is carrying this offense. There's not one player who you're looking at and suggesting he's fine, not one, And I don't even know if you can do that with any team in Major League Baseball. But there are certain guys you don't worry about. Is that
fair? I don't think there's any but Sho hal Tani went over to last night. I don't think anybody in Dodgerland is worried about Shoeo Tani. I'm not sure people in Philadelphia are sitting here going. I'm not sure what Trey Turner has given us this year. Not a big fan Dodgers and Mookie Betts, same thing. Stephen Kwan, even though he's hurt in Cleveland. Trust him at the top of the line You damn right, you trust him at
the top of the lineup. Jeremy Paniam, Arcelo Zunim. Maybe it's because there is a bit of a track record there, but you use your eyes, you recognize Edlie Rushman's is a really good player. He's fine. Baltimorioals fans are going, He's fine. Jose l two Bay has done it for a long long time in his career. He's doing it again this year. He's fine. It's interesting and it's easy to look back on this. It's
really simple for me to play armchair quarterback and you do the same. But it's interesting that the Tigers needs have been shortstop in third base the left side of the infield, right. I mean, they're still looking for those guys. They don't have an everyday third base and otherwise they wouldn't sign Jill or Shecheliff. For crying out loud, They've overpaid for their shortstop who has given them nothing. Can we come to an agreement on that? Good? Okay?
East Soak Parades, who was traded to Tampa for Austin Meadows, which is one of the worst trades, not just in Tiger's history, but in Detroit sports history. Essak Parades is hitting over three hundred in Tampa and is an everyday player there. He's got eight home runs, so there's pop there. He gets on base, he hits for average. He's not going to win a Gold Glove, but he's not going to kick the ball around either. Willie Adamas was in this team system. It's a while back now,
traded for David Price. I get it. I'm not saying it's the wrong move, but you did have a guy and people weren't recognizing it when the trade for Austin Meadows to Place a few years back. I can tell you I was thrilled. Honestly, I can admit that I'm wrong. I was thrilled. You got a guy who hits over three hundred, a guy who drives in over one hundred runs, and a guy who has the power to
give you thirty bombs. He was an All Star again, not a gold Glove, but he's not jose Canseco on the fl the other So that's pretty fired up. But I don't have all the inside information. See, when you talk to teams, and I've said this for my entire career, there are certain things we don't deserve to know. I'm not going to pry into certain situations with team management. So I get it they feel like I should be at arm's length, and other reporters and members of the media too.
Okay, if I give you that respect, then you have to be willing to accept the arrow slung your way and the perception slash reality slash opinion of those members of the media saying you did not do your homework. Someone failed miserably because you gave up a guy who you knew could hit how well we weren't sure it's not like he was tearing the cover out the ball with Detroit,
but he wasn't. It's a very small sample, says, don't tell me that you really can't judge a player until he gets fifteen hundred at bats. That's what we hear all the time with offensive players. What's the number of at bats somebody needs, I would say somewhere in the neighborhood at fifteen hundred in their career before you judge them. Okay, well, then after one hundred and seventy two at bats with Detroit, which is what esak Paratus
got, don't tell me that he can't hit. Don't tell me you've come to the conclusion because he goes to Tampa and what does he do. Though he may have struggled his first year, not with power, he had twenty bombs. He had thirty one homers last year, hit two fifty respectable, and drove in ninety eight. These are better numbers than Spencer Torkleson. And this year he's off to a great start. We'll talk more about that at the top of the hour. When we come back, we'll replay our interview
with Colton Poncey. Colton Poncy the athletic covers the Lions, talk about the schedule, talk about Jared Goff. We'll talk about more with Colton Palcy from yesterday. We'll replay our interview in case you missed it on XS and Bros. When we return on a Friday morning. Across the great state of Michigan.

Get your tickets now at Meyer LPGA Classic dot com. You know, I know you later age it handle most of this, But what was the most important thing or things for you in this negotiation
process to get this still done? It was mostly security. I think, you know, you can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn't really the thing that was was ever something I was extremely concerned with. It was the security and you know, the no trade clause and all that stuff. Knowing that all that was in there and feeling secure, and then you know, knowing that I can now put that behind me and be excited about what's to come. Jared Goff talking to the media the other
day, good question by Justin Rogers and Detroit Doude. What was the most important thing? And I think a lot of people might be really surprised to find out about the no trade. The security he's got, the financial security. I mean, it's a four year, two hundred and twelve million dollars deal, It's a seventy three million dollar side he bonus, it's the largest in NFL history. He's the second highest paid player, not just quarterback,
but player per year, behind Joe Burrow. But to hear a professional athlete, look, I think there's a there's a misconception by many that free agents don't want to come here, athletes don't want to come here, and by here, I mean Detroit, which is really a reflection on the entire state of Michigan. I think that's bull crap. First of all, they're going to go to where the money is. We know that, and a chance
to win all at once. But I would tell you, in my conversations with most not all, because not even you love every place you've been. But the conversation with most professional athletes when they get here is very positive. They like it here a lot. They like the people, they like the area, and they like the fact that people care. So I think there's a little bit of a sorry free agents, they're not coming to Detroit. You're going to have to overpay them. And then they give the example of
Ivon Pudge Rodriguez. There's plenty of athletes who have come here, probably with the mindset of oh boy, I gotta go to Detroit, and then they get here and they're like, hey man, this is really cool. I was only here as a visiting player. I like it a lot more. I had a player for the Lions once tell me he signed here, which is while he was getting a tour of the facility and the stadium, the organization took his wife to various places in Metro Detroit, including a very high
end mall. They returned to Alan Park and the practice facility and she said, sign here, this place is great. It's very comfortable. He did, and he hasn't left. That's not the experience for everybody. I'm not suggesting it is. I'm just letting you know, it says something. I think it says something about Jared Goff. It says something about the NFL, It says something about the Detroit Lions. That says something about you and the state of Michigan. That Jared Goff, who once was a Ram. Look,
he played his college ball at Cal. You know that as well as I do. Right, Okay, you know that most people love Los Angeles or love California. Not necessarily me, but most people will go out there. Oh, I love the sun, I love the beaches and blah blah blah blah. Right, so they're going to want to How can you say no to it. I remember going to UCLA's campus for the first time, and I was fortunate, really fortunate because a friend of mine, Bill Clark,
and I were getting ready to call Michigan UCLA. We get a tour of the campus with John Wooden. It was awesome. But with Jared Goff, I mean, here's a guy who goes to you know, he's from California. We're in Catholic high school in California. He goes to Cal, he gets drafted by the Rams. First over, life has got to be
good, and then what happens well, he signs in a extension. Seventeen months after that, he gets traded to Detroit, and I'm sure the thought process right away for him and his family, anybody close to him, is like, oh man, what a stark contrast. You're going from sandy beaches and eighty degree weather. It's sure more traffic, but you're going to a place where it's blue collar. Bring your snowshoes, bring your winter jacket,
make sure someone's there to help you shovel the driveway. Who knows. Look how he's turned out for him, Look how he's enjoyed it. And remember his first year wasn't good, not as much personally as team wise. As a starter for Detroit, he went three ten and one his first year, only played fourteen of the sixteen games because of the injury. Then it starts to turn the corner a little bit, and by the end of twenty twenty two, how many people were going, Yes, I really like it here.
He's appreciated here. I think it is study and warm and pleasant. In certain areas as California may be, do they truly care about their athletes? In the state of Michigan, they do. He senses it. He's not the only athlete who senses it. Plenty before him, plenty playing with him, and plenty after him already have that sense. But you should feel good that one of the most important athletes in this town. Whether you like him or not, whether you think the contract was right or not, he's
important. I know there's plenty of on you who think anybody could do what he does. That's not true, as you just heard with what we said in our interview with Colton Poucy. Everyone thinks you can just take one piece out and replace it with somebody who's less experienced. It's kind of like the Tigers situation that we'll get into at the bottom of the hour. Just take this guy out and put the other guy in. What's the goal? The
goal is to win it all. Now you've set yourself up. You set yourself up that if you don't get that championship, especially within the next couple of years, it's not going to look great. But the goal is to get there and win it. Can you do that with just a plug in person because you're a little frustrated, disappointed and unsure of the contract, not with the options, not with Ryan Tannehill, not with Hendon Hooker, with a high end guy. You're damn right. But he could do that with
a lot of other teams, do you think Remember our conversation yesterday. Our conversation was when I said, how many players on my team are wanted by the opposing coacher manager? Remember when I was talking about that. That's kind of how I look at teams. How many of those guys do I want? I was watching Phillies and Mets a little bit last night and I thought to myself, there's a lot of guys on those two teams I'd want, especially the Phillies. There's a lot of teams in the NFL that would love
to have Jared Goff. They may have to adjust their system a little bit. You wouldn't be able to run certain things that a team may run now, like Buffalo Josh Allen. But there's a lot of teams that would like him, and he likes you, and there's something to be said for that. Because he got the no trade clause and that was most important. He had other things to say, and we'll get to those when we come back on Xis and Bros. The Meyer Hotline is open for you eight six six
eight three eight forty eight forty three. You could text the program by texting Sports Radio to twenty one thousand on Exies and Bros. Bill Simonson. Here from my good friend Josh Garvey. You said before that that horrible thing or that whatever, the top moment when you got traded, team moved on from you turned out to be the greatest thing that happened to you. I assume this sort of seals the greatest thing that ever happened to you. No, I see where you're going. I see where you're going. Yeah, this is it's it's a good like I guess chapter
closing of the last three years, if you want to say. But now I'm more driven and more fired up than ever to go even harder and put the pedal to the metal even more to bring a Super Bowl to the city. And that's that's what's most important. And one day I won't beat the quarterback here, and being able to look back on those days that I that I am and that I was with no regrets and knowing I did everything I
could to try to make that happen. And obviously there's a lot of work to do, but if we're able to do that, that would be the ultimate goal. Well that's a great answer, isn't it. Jared Goff could handle himself. Say what you want about his play. For the most part, he's He's very direct, he's very honest. Hard not to like that about him. Welcome back, Exes and Bros. Before we get to that real quick. Scotti Scheffler, who had a couple of weeks off since his last victory and he's won for the last five events and tied for second in the other one, was detained by police before the start of the PGA Championship did not realize this, but he was detained in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow that led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club before the start of the second round
this morning. It was delayed the start of the round after a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside of Valhalla Golf Club there in Louisville, so the police officer attempted to stop Scheffler's car. Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to the golf club. The police officer went off on Scheffler said get out of the car, so he gets out. The officer shoves him against the car, places him in handcuffs. They got it worked out.
PGA of America officials they run the tournament said tea times for the second round had to be delayed because of the incident, not with Scheffler's incident, but because a pedestrian was struck. He was trying to cross a road outside the gate of the club about five o'clock this morning and he was hit by a bus in the lane that was dedicated to buses, and the man died at the scene. Scotti. Scheffler is a regular guy, I guess until he gets a golf club in his hand. He shot a four under yesterday.
There he's five back of the leader Xander Schaffley. I don't mean to go from you know, a pedestrian death outside Valhalla to golf scores yesterday. Tough to make that transition. But the biggest part of that story is that Scheffler was actually put in handcuffs before this morning second round. But Xander Schoffley shot a nine under sixty two, bogie free, nine under sixty two. You're out there playing if you're a guy I like sahiit Thigala and he hurts a
six under. Rory McElroy Card's a five hunder twenty Feenal really good player, six under part and you're multiple strokes back because Xander Schaffley shot a nine hunder sixty two, the fourth ever sixty two shot in a major. Shaffley's done it twice, did it at the US Opened last year. He's doing it at the PGA Championship this year. That's incredible stuff. By the way, you heard Jared Goff talking about the Super Bowl. That's great stuff. Man,
it really is. Giants have Super Bowls. Have you seen their way to commemorate their one hundredth season? Their inaugural season was nineteen twenty five. Have you seen their I guess you would call it throwback uniforms, but that's such a cliche. It's an alternate uniform that they're going to wear two or three times this year. Have you seen these? I complained about the Lions' new uniform look or or a chance for them to use a different look with
the blue and all that other stuff. I am not a fan of the Tiger's MotorCity. I can't stand it. I'm not going to say I'm not a fan. I can't stand it. I don't like the Pistons going to black an orange. That's me. I understand who I am, and I understand I've got plenty of flaws. I understand that my way of looking at tradition and wanting to stick with that tradition is fuddy duddy ish. New word for you, this is I have no reason to complain when you look at
what the Giants are going to do. They tweeted out inspired by our history, built for today. It's hard to describe. I'm going to do the best I can. If you haven't seen it, Ben, have you seen it yet? Yes? I have, okay, and they're ugly. Okay, so you're a young guy. You were okay with the Lions alternative jersey, Yes, I was okay. You didn't like the Tigers, right? You don't like all uniforms. I thought they were good? Oh you did like y? And what are your thoughts on the Pistons with the black and
the orange, even though neither are in their color scheme at all. Yeah, not a fan of those. Not a fan of those. Okay, these Giants uniforms they have Ben, it's khaki pants, right, yes, space pants, khaki pants, red jersey with the middle being white and blue, a white stripe at the top, the number in white with a blue background and a white stripe underneath. Yeah. Then there is a hint of blue at the shoulder pads. And they have a Michigan wolverine themed helmet,
only the winged part is in red and the helmet is blue. It might be, by the way. They also have socks red at the top, white stripe, blue stripe, white stripe, then red at the bottom. Might be the ugliest things I've ever seen. It's close, it's in the conversation kind of looks like a rugby team. To me, it does. That's a really good point rugby. That's exactly what it looks like with helmets.
You gotta be a badass to play rugby, all right. When we come back, aj Hinch's thoughts on one particular player, will get your thoughts on it. We know you don't like it, but we're gonna get your thoughts on that. And we'll take some texts as well, because we want to make sure we get those in as ex'es and bros. it's thirty five after the hour. I got a tweet from our good friend gb Ritz. We were talking about Jared Goff and how he wants to be part of this city, likes to be part of this city. It was tweeted out by someone that Goff said, so lucky to call this city home for the next few years. Truly wouldn't want to be anywhere else. So proud. Oh it's his fiance. So proud of this guy, and lucky
to be along for the crazy ride. We love you, Detroit. Very cool, very cool, and thanks for that, Terry, much appreciated you, de man. Thanks for listening to Exis and Bros. Monday through Friday, six until night. Now. I would remind you this, we don't hear from Jared Gos's fiance that much. That's a good thing. I think we heard a lot from the previous quarterback's wife that got a little old.
And why we hear a lot about Patrick Mahomes's wife too. It's at times where you just it's best to just move on, you know what I mean, Just it's okay not to be in that limelight. Let let the guy throwing the football around do just that. But that's a very nice text, a very nice tweet, I should say on her behalf welcome back Monday through Friday six until nine. Our Meyer hotline is eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. The text line is a sports radio twenty one.
Before we dive into something AJ Hinch said that is not going to make many Tigers fans happy at all. Let's get to a couple of texts, because I know they've been on there for a while, Ben, and you've been waiting to pass them along. So go ahead. Yeah, it says golf lives here five months to a year at best, he will be right back in Calna full time after he leaves. Look at Stafford, he will never come back full time. First of all, we don't know that. I
mean Stafford probably won't. You're right about that. We don't know that. Guys who came and played, who you thought would probably leave, actually did stay. Calvin Johnson State, Barry Sanders State, Chris Spielman State for an extended period of time, and then he moved to Columbus and now has come back. There are plenty of athletes who've stuck around who aren't necessarily from here
and just decided, you know what, this is my new home. There's a lot of athletes who just you know, they're not living in the city that they play in, Okay, And I'm not going to sit there and blame them for that. I think if I were an athlete i was playing, would I want to come back to the state of Michigan. Probably, But I'm not going to hold that against you know, Matthew Stafford right now, and I wouldn't hold it against Jared Goff, even though I don't know
that yet about Jared Goff. You know, there's more baseball players live in Florida and Texas and Arizona and California then they live in the cities that they play. How many Tigers live here year round? Let me think about that, Nune. So why is it? Why is it Golf's going to get your iyre in that regard? There's plenty of them. I mean, you've seen coaches, You've seen managers. They're not living here year round either. The general managers are. They're going into work every single day. Members of
his staff are because they're doing the same. Would that matter to you? I mean, if he won a Super Bowl and chose to live in California, for example, in the offseas and train there, would that upset you probably not. If he lived here year round and they won three games, does that make up for it? Hell no, So I don't think that's a huge deal. You would like them to be around more often because many of these athletes, you want them to experience your state, your area even
in the offseason. You want to see them at other games. You'd like to see him at the ballpark, for example. I understand that I can't say that I'm different than you, but I'm not going to hold it against him. If they don't happen to live here year round. Sure, they're spending plenty of money and helping our economy while they are living here. Any more tech s Ben Yeah, It says if Jared got traded to say,
twenty eight other teams, his career would have spiraled. There was no Dan Campbell, who solely changed the culture here, a will to win, team first, believe in yourself. And Chris Pielman made this all happen when this franchise was at its lowest. Now, if Goff went to Andy Reid, yes he plays well, but Dan Campbell saved Goff from becoming Steve Bartkowski. That's from Freddy oh Man. Steve Bartkowski. Good poll there loved Steve Bartkowski.
He could spin it with Atlanta. Atlanta needs to go back to those red helmets. I've said that about Chris Pielman for a long time, so that's nothing new. And I do agree with you. I totally disagree with you that if he had gone anywhere else other than someplace coach by Dan Campbell, that he would not be successful. Totally disagree. There's plenty of other coaches in the NFL who could get the most out of Jared Goff. I
truly believe that, and I'm surprised you don't. I'm surprised you think that there's only one place that it works for Jared Goff, and it's because of Dan Campbell, who totally changed the culture. I would remind you that Jared Goff was with Dan Campbell when he won only three games. He is the quarterback. So there's no question Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes and Chris Bielman and other members of Dan Campbell's staff and Brad Holmes's front office changed the culture,
no doubt about that. Kudos to all of them. It's such a job well done. It's look, I don't want to get too sappy here, But it's very prideful that your team. This team is viewed as blueprint is way too far because it's more Kansas City and the other teams that have done it for a long period of time. I would say Pittsburgh's in that conversation, in San Francisco's in that conversation, and they're still really good. But
the drastic change that has forced national people to look at Detroit differently? Is that fair enough? It's very prideful and we should be. However, Jared Goff was part of the culture change. It's not just one guy. It's not just one coach. It's not but just one general manager. They had to bring in the right people. If you believe they change the culture as I do. Part of the culture change is bringing the right people. Jared
Goff's one of those people. You're trying to tell me that without Jared Goff, Dan Campbell has the same success or vice versa. You think Jared Goff needed Dan Campbell to have success. What about going to the super Bowl with Sean McVay. How about that one. I know Sean McVay in the end didn't want him because they traded him and the Lions are happy for it. McVeigh did get to a Super Bowl with Jared Goff, so he has proven he can win with another head coach and he could work just fine with a
number a myriad of other head coaches in the NFL and have success. I do not believe that Jared Goff's career was saved by Dan Campbell. Do they accentuate his positive attributes without question. It's not just Dan Campbell, by the way, it's Ben Johnson two. Brad Holmes had to believe in him. He is good enough. We make it sound I don't think Freddie Mee is it this way, So this is not a Freddy, but we make it sound like Jared Goff wouldn't be anything but a backup or a last place quarterback
in any other organization. That is such crap. He's a good quarterback, man. I'm not saying he's a Hall of Famer, but he's a damn good quarterback. Ben back to the text line. People could text us at Sports Radio twenty one thousand. All you gotta do is text Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. Ben'll read your text and we'll talk about it. Go ahead, Ben, Yeah, this one's over to the Tigers. It says who gets the most credit for this pitching staff pitching wise this year, Hinch,
Rogers or Fetter. Great question. I tend to believe it's It would be more Chris Fetter. And the reason I say that it's Chris Fveederick's Robin Lund. I think it's more than because they're with those pitchers specifically every single day. They are focused on what they do. It's kind of like remember when the Atlanta Braves had Smoltz and Glavin and Maddox. Remember when they were
a dominant team back in the day. And let's face it, they had some decent offense, there's no doubt about that, but they also had an incredible pitching staff, right and Bobby Cox was the guy in charge. But they had some pretty damn good tutors for that, for that pitching coach or for the that pitching staff. Okay, and when you do that, when you have guys like that. Leo Mazzone was the guy Leo Mazzoni. Uh, and then he went to Baltimore, you have that knowledge. He deserves
a lot of that credit since they're focused on one aspect of it. I remember when the Tiger's pitching staff was terrible, everybody. This is way before Chris Fetter, God who is the pitching coach? Back then? Darn it was even before Jeff Jones. Anyway, everyone wanted to Everyone wanted to blame
the pitching coach. Well, if if people feel like the pitching coach is an issue or the hitting coach right now people want to move on from Michael Berdaro whomever, some of the pitching coaches or batting coaches, then you've got to be willing to give credit where the credit is due. On the other
side, don't you. I would rank them Fetter, Hinch, Rogers, Carson Kelly also catches him too, So remember that, all right, Speaking of AJ Hinch and the Tigers, Hinch on the day off, knowing his team is under five hundred for the first time, also understands that this offense is horrible, period, simply horrible. The biggest culprit you would argue is Aavier bias. There's plenty of blame to go around, but it is primarily Detroit's infield. This is a team that ranks twenty second or worse in all
the really important categories offensively, and if you look at them. It has primarily to do with the infield. They're getting production from the outfield, but the infield is horrible. There's no pop there, Torkulsen, Banyez Bias, so there's frustration there. You're getting it from Riley Green, Mark Canna, carry Carpenter. To a certain extent, they have probably been Detroit's most consistent hitters. I think that's a fair statement. I don't know if it's going
to end that way, but that's the way it is so far. Infield's a different story. Cole Keith you got to throw in there, even though he's not playing every single day. But the most glaring hiccup in that entire lineup is Hoavier Bias. He has the worst on base percentage, the worst slugging percentage, and the worst on bass plus slug or ops in Major League Baseball. Only Randy A. Rose Arena has a worst batting average among everyday players. Think of that. That's how bad it is. Now are you
going to give? Would you give Randy a Rose Arena the benefit of the doubt? Absolutely, Rookie of the Year, ALCS MVP, an All Star, a guy who does a lot of things well. He was an All Star year ago. Right now, he leads the league in strikeouts and has way too many over the last two years. He's strike out one hundred and fifty six times last year, one hundred and fifty six times the year before.
But he's a I don't I don't think he's a five tool player, but he's pretty damn close to it because he doesn't hit for great average and he doesn't have great pop. I mean, I think his career high Homer's twenty three steal some basses. I wouldn't call him a five tool player, but he's a good player. You'd want him in left field for you on a regular basis, wouldn't you. Yeah, you didn't take it absolutely. So you think he's gonna got he he's going to break out of that.
You don't think Randy Rosa Rainez start for Tampa right now is who he is. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but that's that's the feeling I get. Hovey or bias you think is already defined. Aj Hinch says about bias when people ask what do you do with him? Are you going to bench him? He said this, He's going to play a lot. We have to try to find a way to get more out of him. There's an occasional misstep here or there, but no at bats. Giving
away his at bats. Taking away his at bats is not going to be the answer. He said, He's got to keep getting his rhythm and timing and hopefully getting in a position to produce offensively. That's the goal. Doesn't have to carry the team, but we got to find a way for him to contribute. We got to push the right buttons. All fair enough, all something that a manager or a coach is going to say about a highly priced player. What would the follow up question be? How long? Long
is long enough? Right? How far are you willing to go with him? How long is that proverbia leash? People think it's really easy. All you gotta do is bench him. There are follow up questions there. How long do you bench him for? Who takes his place? And for how long? What do you do after the benching? When do you bring him back? Then? How long is the leash? There are plenty of repercussions
that we'll discuss when we come back on x'es and bros. As we get ready for the third and final hour on a Friday across the great state of Michigan on Exis and Bros. We're teeing off our tenth year at the Meyer LPGA Classic for simply give. Get ready for the best who are yet to

Tigers opened up a six game road trip, first of three in Arizona tonight. Trek Scooble gets the call. Jack Flaherty will pitch game two, Matt manning game three. They need runs, they're not getting them at
all. They take out on Arizona team. That is a couple of games under five hundred, but they have played decent ball as of late, winning seven of their last ten. If you missed it last night, Vancouver scored a late goal in the third. They trim Edmonton three to two. They came back from one to nothing down and two to one down. They lead the series three games to two. The Rangers game was unbelievable, man. It was a three to one Carolina lead heading into the third at home,
and the Rangers score four times. The last one is an empty netter, a natural hat trick for Chris Kreider, and he leads them into the Eastern Conference finals. Crider joins Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky, is the only Rangers to score three goals in a period in a playoff game, and the Rangers are the only President's Trophy winner in the last ten years to reach the conference
finals. In basketball, Minnesota staves off elimination. Anthony Edwards had twenty seven to lead the Timberwolves to a blowout win of Denver one point fifteen to seventy. The Nuggets, for as good as they are that are defending world champions, they are a team that is to be reckoned with. Without question. They've got superstars, they got the MVP. They shot thirty percent from the
floor. Seven is Sunday and the PGA Championship, the one hundred and six playing at Valhalla has some incredible names atop the board, led by Xander Schoffley, who card at a nine hunder sixty two. The fourth man. Actually he's the third man because he's done it twice. To ever carred a sixty two in a major. He did it last year at the US Open. He did it this year in Round one of the PGA Championship on a course that is supposed to be very challenging. I've never played it. Over seventy
six hundred yards, sixty four men were in red figures. That's pretty damn good. The defending champion is Brooks Koepka. He's at four under. So is Scottie Scheffler, who is detained by police before the start of the second round today because around five am a bystander was walking across the street near Valhallack Golf Club in the bus lane and was struck by a bus at five o'clock this morning, so they had some parts of it marked off. Scheffler drove
by that marked off area. A police officer launched himself onto his car told him to get out, Scheffler gets out. He throws Sheffler up against the car and puts him in handcuffs. The championship was delayed because of that deadly crash, so they're about to get underway. Scheffler, by the way, from all intentsive purposes, just a really good dude. Apparently, after a misunderstanding with traffic, they take him, They put him in handcuffs, they
get situated, everything's figured out. Scheffler's ready to play round two. There you go, that's what's going on in the world of sports. Go to the phone lines. The Meyer hotline is open for you, and our friend Freddie is standing by on a Friday morning. Freddie, good morning. How are you a chef? When I find interesting about Scheffler is not the situation,
but a bunning star that people don't even know. If you walk, if we delivered a pizza the year of the house, you won't even know who not you, but most people won't even know what he looks like. That's the funny thing. Everyone don't tell you what as long as it's your pizza. Yeah, well well yeah, I just gots It's just you know, I don't I don't get to see him play much because I'm still kind of bitterer, a lout in my favorite with the favorites when to have lived.
So I don't watch as much, you know, so, but make you just out of curiosity? Why does it make you bitter? Because I don't get to watch them. I don't know, I don't know where they're at, I don't know channel they're on, I don't know what's where they're streaming at. And he of the guys, I JT was one of my Why am I jama blank? Right? Because you just talked about Wayne Gretzky, his son in law. I'm drawing the blank right now. You who are you talking about? No, Wayne Gretky, southern in law. Why
am I Dramaba? Dustin Dustin Johnson, Dustin Johnson Sorry, Dustin Johnson. Yeah, you don't get to see him play anymore because you know he went to live and you know stuff like that, And I just you know, I want to understand the PGA tour, so I get it. But if you have if you have the Internet, if you have YouTube, you can watch them. Yeah. Well yeah, well I'm not gonna do it. So but before I before I get to Tigers, you said something interesting about
the New York Rangers. How Wayne Gretzky and Mark and Mark Messier where there's only two guys, isn't there Isn't it amazing for a team like the New York Rangers. It took two and the ten Oilers to break that record. Yeah, most young people wouldn't even know those guys played for the Edmonton Oynis. Yeah, pretty impressive stuff. Yeah, well, I'm sure a lot of people don't know. Young people don't know that Wayne Gretzky also, you know, played for the Saint Louis Blues. So anyway, exactly. Anyway,
so hobby biased. I gotta tell you, I am so tired of hearing about hobby bias. You turn on any station, read something, it's always about hobby bias. So you know, no one has a solution, and you know, I don't know. Sometimes I feel like for the Tigers, maybe it's all everyone's talking about and they're not really talking about what's really going on, the guys not hitting or the team's not hitting, or struggles
here, struggles there. So let's keep hobby around. And and uh, you know, for me, if it was for me and I'm about this, this is my opinion. You know, I topt you earlier in the week. I threw off some ideas like, hey, trade a bad contract for a bad contract I've heard attached a top prospect get rid of them. I would not do that. I would not get rid of a top prospect
just so a team could take them. But that if it was for me, Yeah, if it was me, And I listen, I'm a businessman, but I don't want a billion dollar corporation, so I'm not I'm not in the equation. But I am a businessman and I've done I've made mistakes, and I've taken lasses, and I've had to take losses. And I think it's it's it's really getting to the point where, you know, the only one may have to buy him out because this is all everyone's talking about.
Sheep is hobby biased. It's getting annoying, and he may have to pay him off to get rid of him. I mean, what are your thoughts about that? Well, you're talking about ninety eight million dollars. It's sexually seventy three butt if you include this year. So I mean, it's it's easy for me to say that. It's easy for me to say, just buy him out, give him the twenty five million this year, give him twenty five next year, and give him forty eight over the following two
years. Would you do that? What you're gonna pay him, But you're gonna pay him if he's here, or or or you pay him off. No, correct, Yeah, but at least with at least if you have him here, and thanks to the phone call I got, I got to get to a break. At least with having him here, you get a chance to turn him around. If you think he's a completely lost cause, then you can cut him and see if somebody else wants to pick him up, and then pay the salary. It's not gonna happen, though, It's
just not going to because no team is going to do that. You're not gonna trade him, and you're sure as hell don't trade a top prospect, let's say a Jackson Job, a Cole Keith, whoever it may be in your system. You sure as hell don't do that. Oh, please take one of my best prospects so I can get rid of the worst player on my team. There's no logic to that whatsoever. We're back with more after
this on Exis and Bros. In the Den with Dan Dickerson, Hey Tiger's fans, A new baseball season means a new season on Michigan's favorite island destination, Mackinawe Island, Baseball Spring and mackinaw Island. Things that return every year,

Aj Hint says what separates the top level pitchers from the rest of the pack is the ability to just keep stacking strong outings, one on top of the other. Now he was talking about Trek
schoolball, but you can add now Reese Olsen to the conversation. In his last fourteen starts, going back to last year, Olsen's been incredibly consistent. In eighty three innings, He's allowed just fifty hits. He's allowed more than two earned runs once. Hint says, Olsen has an incredible feel for pitching, knowing how to attack different lineups. You can throw all four pitches are over the plate. The top four toughest pictures are hit in the major leagues
right now. Dylancy's Ranger Suarez reez Olsen and Trek Scoogle in that order. Hey Michigan, let's go, baby. Sports, Made in Michigan, made Ford, Michigan. Let's be twenty winters over in Michigan to play nineteen after the Hour. Welcome back. Ben is our producer. We appreciate it. Look, there are some at times, some technical difficulties. One hundred point nine FM the mid Midland Sagon of Bay City unable to run our show this morning because of some technical issues. They'll be back with us on Monday. They're working to get it fixed. That
doesn't help you in Midland Sagon on Base City. Who can't hear what I'm saying right now, but just FYI, all right, so making some things happen. So the phone number on the Meyer Hotline eighty sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three in Tech Sports Radio to twenty one thousand, and feel free to do that. We're talking a little bit. Look Freddy's right. Just before the break, Freddy called said, now everyone's writing about this,
everyone's talking about how your bikes. Well there's a reason for that. You know, this is not a promotional. This isn't what Caitlin Clark, you know where it's over exposed. She had nine points in her home debut last night and they got blown out by New York. Not that I want to tell you, not that we're going to talk about it. I'm just letting you know she and it's no fault of her. It's the media jumping
all over it. But when you have two point three million people watch your first game, when you sell out, you're on national TV on every game, and you sell out your home ticket allotments, people are going to talk about you. I think we go overboard with athletes because we got the twenty four hour cycle. I'll give you a case in point Tiger Woods ten straight times now where he has shot over par right, I think that's what I
saw last night. But either way everybody's talking about Tiger Woods. He was won over how far back he is the leader's at nine under. He's not winning this tournament. But that's what everybody starts their highlights out with, all right, because people want to know about Tiger Woods. Okay, that's what's going on with Havier Bias. When you are as highly paid as Biases,
when you play the most, you could argue the most important position. It's probably catcher, but the most important position that he does that the team is financially committed to him for another three years after this. Of course, people are going to write about it and talk about it, and when he's struggling. I know that it doesn't mean that you should avoid it, though I think it's ridiculous. I don't know if anybody. I don't think anyone's written
this. I don't know if anyone's talked about it. I don't know if fans have contemplated it. If they have, it's ridiculous. There's no way a team says, in order for me to get rid of my worst asset, I'm going to give up my best future asset business wise makes no sense. The problem with Bias and his contract and his lack of hitting is that no one would touch him. I know there's plenty of fans who would want to do this in a fantasy where Okay, we're getting close to the deadline,
Tigers are not in this thing. What do we do. Let's trade a commodity that we have that somebody wants. Immediately your thought goes to pitching, right, of course, immediately your thought goes to a young pitcher. I gotta trade Jack Flaherty, right, maybe you will. I don't know, maybe they did, sort of like what Michael Lorenzen did. You wish you could tread Ken Tamada. No one's gonna want him. So you go to a Casey Mice, you go to a Matt Manning, you go to
a Trek schoobl you go to That's where your mind takes you. And then you think, I got an idea to make things at least sweet for me but sour for you. You got to take Miz Manning or Schooble with bias. Teams aren't going to do that. That's an immediate turnoff. That's like taking a girl out on the first date and she's picking her nose. First time you go see her. You walk up to the steps and she's smoking. I don't mean smoking hot, I mean smoking a Cigarett. Turn off,
turn off, I'm out. General managers are going to hang the phone up, They're gonna drive the car off the road. They're gonna disconnect their bluetooth. That's not happening, So you can get that out of here. I suppose you could find one irresponsible I won't use the word stupid. Irresponsible GM to do that. I doubt it, highly doubt it. Maybe they've got so much money. Wouldn't be the Mets, but it wouldn't be the
Yankees. They got they're okay with the Vulpian Torres. Maybe there's a team out there that says, you know what, we need that picture so desperately, we will take the other guy and eat his contract. It's just I don't see how that happens. I don't see how they they possibly eat seventy three million dollars. Those general managers have to go to a higher caller, their owner. They have to go to their owner and say, here's what
we've done. We've acquired Casey my Matt mannure Terry Cool, and we've done that. But we've also had to collect a less than desirable contract. Oh yeah, what's that. We've got Javier Bias and we're going to owe him seventy three million dollars after this year. That seems like pretty steep. I don't know the young fellow, but my guess is he better be worth it, right, because that's pretty well quite honestly, No, he's eighty two percent worse than the average hitter. I'm sorry. What, yeah, it's
it's not a great situation, but I had to make the deal. I hate to tell you this, but is on base plus slunking percentage has dropped in each of the last three years with Detroit. I can't do anything about it. I had to have the pitching. I know he's hitting in just one sixty seven and one homer and he's only walked five times. But I really think the pitchon's going to help. You're fired. That's my money and you're wasting it. But he's a two time All Star in his prime,
not now, so that's not happening. You have to write it out. I know it's tough. You have to hope or rely. Hope is gone. You have to rely on your coaches to make him better, and you better try and pray as hard as you can that he figures something out. Whatever it is you're doing with him ain't working right now. Hey, thanks for sticking around with us eight thirty five on this Friday morning. I hope you've got big plans coming this weekend and you're excited for them. Enjoy it if you missed it. Last night, Rangers come for three to one down. They beat Carolina five to three. They eliminate the Hurricanes in six games. Chris
Krider had the hat trick. It was a natural hat trick. It all came in the third period, and the Rangers are into the finals there where they play Eastern Conference Finals, where they play either Florida or Boston. I'm not sure who the better matchup is. I can't necessarily break that down. I just know Florida's tough to play against. Man. They really are. I said this middle of the season, as were really good. You sure
didn't need me to tell you that. But they are sustainable because of their depth and Shaskirkin is really good in net on the west side, Dallas leads Colorado three games to two, and now Edmonton trails Vancouver three games to two because the Canucks won last night three to two. The biggest surprise, well, the fact that Carolina surroundered a three to one third period lead is surprising.
But to watch Denver get steamrolled by Minnesota. I don't know if you saw this, or maybe you just tuned it out after a while because you saw how it was going one fifteen to seventy. Anthony Edwards said twenty seven. Rudy Gobert must have had I think he had five more rebounds than Nikola Jokic. Maybe, just maybe he took it a little personal. Not sure. He was showing seven fingers to the crowd, saying, you know it's going to take seven games. Here we go, and now they're going to
do just that. Sunday in Denver, the one fifteen to seventy decisive knockout, the forty five point win the Wolf's largest winning margin in a postseason game since twenty fifteen when they beat Milwaukee, or I should say when Chicago beat Milwaukee by fifty four points, clinching a first round playoff series win, so the largest postseason victory for any team since twenty fifteen. That's impressive. Here's the other thing I noticed last night after the Rangers won, Chris Kreyd took
a hockey puck. Had to have some velcro on it. They had a little like Stanley Cup and then series brackets on it, sort of like what they do in the NCAA tournament where they move forward. You know you'll see them take their team name, slap it on a bracket, have some magnetic force, and celebrate in their locker room with everybody. Really is a cool moment. I didn't know NHL teams were doing that. I didn't know that was a thing, but it's cool that they get involved in stuff like that.
Hey, I wanted to bring this up two days ago when it came out, but we never got to it. I think we were too. First of all, we were talking more about the Jared Goff signing extension, and we were talking about, you know, the Tigers back to back shut out losses to Miami and they haven't scored in nineteen straight innings. CBS Sports came out with a poll that's not even a poll, it's a ranking.
They're writers decided what has who the best coaches are? How's that? And first of all, there's a lot more to coaching just than just what you see on the field to play, as we all know. But they took the power for conferences and ranked the coaches sixty eight teams, sixty eight coaches. Where this is hard to do, but where would you put Jonathan Smith Michigan State and Sharon Moore Michigan Where would you rank them? CBA Sports has
Cheron Moore ranked sixty second or fifty second. Rather, here's what they write. We don't typically see first year coaches start this high in the rankings. But more isn't your typical first year coach He served four games as head coach last season thanks to Harbaugh's transgressions, but won them all, including victories against Penn State and Ohio State. Plenty of coaches are ranked ahead of him without wins. That impressive, but it'll be interesting to see how more performs as
captain of a ship coming off a national title. They have him behind a number of coaches that you look at and think, no way, how in the hell is he behigh this guy? Now, if you're looking for other Big Ten coaches, just to put it in perspective for you, and I mean traditional Big Ten, not the teams that are coming over. Purdue, Ryan Walters has ranked sixty fifth out of sixty eight. Sixty eight, by the way, is Deshaun Foster, first year head coach UCLA sixty fifth for
Ryan Walters. This is all very subjective as far as I'm concerned, but play along if you don't mind. Northwestern's David Braun just behind Sharon Moore. Braun was the interim coach at Northwestern just before the season started because of the problems with Pat Fitzgerald, and he led the Wildcats do an eight and five record that was that exceeded everybody's expectations. If that's the case, why would he not. I mean, he's got thirteen games under his belt and a
win. This is why it's so damn subjective. Sometimes it's tough to make sense of it. Kurt Signetti is the Indiana coach. It's going to be his first year as the head coach of the Hoosiers. He's got experience, He's been at different places, including most recently James Madison, but first time that he's in a Power four conference. And yet he's ahead of Sharon Moore. I'm not saying Charon Moore should be ahead of him. I'm just giving you an idea, all right. Mike Loxley Maryland. He's at forty one.
He's coming off an eight and five campaign. But Maryland's won three straight bowl games. They've under well, actually they haven't finished with a Big Ten. Above five hundred record in the Big Ten doesn't help when you're playing in the same division as Michigan and Ohio State and Penn State and Michigan State. But those are the facts. Just ahead of him at thirty nine or at forty rather is Rutgers. That's Greg Chiano. Greg Cianno's got a pretty good
track record. That's a really hard job there at Rutgers. Their facility stink, that football stadium blows. PJ. Fleck, Minnesota thirty nine. I don't. I don't get that. I just don't. Six and seventy year ago, first losing Big Ten record in a full season since he took over, or a second since the second year two thousand eighteen. He's at thirty nine. No way would not want him on my sideline. Brett Beilama, Illinois thirty six. That guy's got a proven track wreck. Now he also
had a bad, proven track record at Arkansas. But we're talking about right now, all right again, I'm going to the traditional ones. I'm not going to Oregon and USC and the like Nebraska. Matt Rule. He went to and ten in his first year. Remember his first year Baylor, he was terrible and then he turned it around. So he's at twenty nine. Jonathan Smith is at twenty seven. Here's what they write about Jonathan Smith. I would argue that our annual coach rankings were ahead of the curve on Smith.
He's done well here on an annual basis. Now that Smith has led in the Big Ten, his profile will likely rise further considering the total roster overhaul that's taking place, and he's lansing this offseason. I don't know how expectations should be set this season, but Smith's track record suggest Sparty will be
happy with its decision in the long run. I guess what I sometimes, what I wonder when they do these rankings is do you take into account just how good of a guy, what a good job he's done in a difficult circumstance. He was really good at Oregon State. Personally, this is just my opinion. I think he should be in the top twenty five. I'm not saying he's better than Sunny Dike's. I'm not saying he's better than Eli Drinkwitz. But I look Jeff Browms struggled at Purdue mightily, and then he
goes to Louisville and he had a really good season. I'm not saying he shouldn't be number nineteen, but Jonathan Smith deserves the same type of credit other Big Ten coaches. Kirk Farren's eighteen at Iowa, this is a lifetime achievement. Ranking plays in the weaker division. We'll see how it had. We'll see how he does when there is no divisions, but he plays in the weaker division, has not been able to win the Big Ten title game. He does it with Look, I mean, let's be honest. Okay,
it's not enjoyable to watch because their offense isn't very good. Let's see if Tim Lester changes that. But their offense just is not creative. It's not good. It's not fun to watch. It's bad. The defense scores as much as the offense. For crying out loud, but that is strictly a lifetime achievement. Is he the eighteenth best coach in America? His all time record would tell you he deserves that respect, or maybe even more. But we're talking about to here and now, and what does he do so well?
It's not easy to recruit to Io City, and yet he has found a way to do it. I can't say. Look, I remember I use the example for teams. How many of your guys do I want? How many of my guys do you want? You could do the same thing with coaches to a certain extent. If you're an athletic director and your coach abruptly leaves, are you making that phone call? Forget the age for a minute, Okay, are you making the phone call? The answer to that
is probably no. But he's at eighteen seventeen is Luke Fickle. I think he's a really good coach. I have no problem with that. A guy you here in our six o'clock open when we begin Exes and Bros. Every Monday through Friday six to nine. Mike Gundhy is at fifteen, even though they're not in the Big ten. I just wanted to give you that because he's part of the Open. The next Big ten team Penn State James Franklin, that's ridiculous. Sorry. I don't think he's a top eleven coach.
No way, can't beat Michigan, can't beat Ohio State. For the most part, I know he has he's had success, but I'll bet you most people at Happy Valley wouldn't mind them moving on. You think James Franklin is better than Lane Kiffin, I don't. I think Josh Heipel's a really good coach at Tennessee. I think Matt Campbell's really good at I was, Marcus Freeman's a good recruiter. I don't think he's a really good in game coach. And yet they have James Franklin above all those guys. Dan Lanning in
Oregon. They're going to be in the Big Ten next year. They've got him at number nine, all right. Caitlin de Boorr, who made it to the National championship last year, is at seven. I'll tell you the guy who I really really like, and they like him too. They probably don't like him as much as I do. Kyle Whittingham Utah. I think that dude is really good, and I think he's better than number six ranking. I'd probably take him over Dabos Sweeney. I'd probably take him over Brian
Kelly. The last Big Ten coach you're waiting to hear about is Ryan Day. He's number two. If Nick Saban were still around, he wouldn't be He'd probably be at three according to these, but he's at number two. Ohio State couldn't beat Michigan for a third straight season, missed out on the College Football Playoff. But this dude can recruit. He kills it on the recruiting trail. And yes, there are times when you watch him in game you think what are you doing? No way? Why? That's because we
don't watch them every single game. I think he's a very good coach. Go I think he's number two, Probably not, but I think he's a top five coach because it's more than just in game stuff. I think the in game is the most important thing, but it's more than just in game. Number one. You know who it is. It's Kirby Smart and that makes sense. Again, if Nick Saban were around, Kirby Smart would not
be number one. It'd be Nick Saban, and rightfully so, not just because of all the championships he's won, but because of how he recruits, who he sends to the NFL, what he does for college football, all that. I meant to get to that a couple of days ago, we didn't have time to do it, and we finally were able to get it. By the way, they have decided, speaking of college football, they have decided, courtesy of the Michigan Regents, that they are going to sell booze at the Big House. It was approved by the Board of Regents on Thursday. You're going to see the ability to drink spirits. It's going to have a Class C liquor license. So will Chrysler Center. By the way, so you're going to get beer, wine, mixed drinks as well. Another way to bring in
more money. I wonder how much that changes the tailgaters. Probably not that much, but you'll have a chance to imbibe once you're inside the gates of the Big House. Things are.
