Where are we at in society today? Come after me. I'm a man, I'm forty. Go ahead, make my dad. Every single week, I put my freaking heart and soul into this. I don't go out there and laugh. It's not funny. Nothing's funny to me. I don't wanna go out there and get embarrassed on Monday night football fun of everybody. I think this at the beginning of a beautiful friendship. So I ain't nothing changed from yesterday. Still the same person I was yesterday, and I got the
same thing for you that I had yesterday. You know why I'm here. You play to win the game. You don't play to just play it. That's a great thing about sports. You play to win, and I don't care if you don't have any wins. Do you go play to win? When you start telling me it doesn't matter, I can retire, get out for the matters. Oh Man, Does it matter that it's a Friday to you? Oh? You bet it does. Man. Welcome to EXUS and
Bros. Glad you're with us throughout the great state of Michigan. Ben as our producer, I'm Matt Shephard, and as always, that Meyer hotline is open for you eight six, six, eight three eight forty eight forty three and the text line sports Radio to twenty one thousand, good to have you on board on this Friday in early June. Tigers are home for six straight
now, starting tonight with the first to three against the Brewers. Deturch should feel good going into this matchup because Rie Olsen Casey Mysteric School will start in the series. Tiger's at five hundred, the Brewers are up five. I believe in the National League Central Division. Although they are, they've they've had
some bumps in the road. To find me a baseball team outside of maybe the Yankees that hasn't although the Yankees, remember remember Aaron Judge at the beginning of the year, people were all over him because he was struggling a little bit. The lead is four and a half, thank you. The lead is four and a half for Milwaukee over chicag But Aaron Judge started out uh humanlike and now Aaron Judge is just ripping the cover off the ball on a
regular basis and a massive reason why. I mean, the Yankees won again yesterday they beat Minnesota eight to five. They are the best record in the American League They've had the best record in the American League for a while. Now they are the team to be. They've won eight in a row and there are forty five wins overall. They're forty five victories on the seat and our most in all of baseball. I think Philly was idol last night.
I'll tell you what's more important, more impressive. They And again I don't know how much home field matters in the grand scheme of things. You know, I've said this for a long time. Baseball is you know, you get your last at bat? How is How's that a huge advantage? You get the last at bat when you're at home. X ratings and stuff. But if you've got a good closer on the opposite side, come on. They've got twenty four wins at home. They're twenty four to eleven. They've
got more road winds then the White Sox have wins overall. The White Sox have lost a franchise record fourteen in a row. They've got twenty four wins, which is the roadwinds, same number as the Angels have overall. Yankees have more road winds than Miami, more road winds than Colorado. Overall. Colorado's got twenty two wins on the air. That's dominant, man, absolutely
dominant. So the Tigers and Brewers tonight NBA Finals last night, massive letdown right, really psyched for this, been waiting a while, Boston's been waiting ten days for crying out loud, really psyched for this. And then you know, you watch Dallas jump out to a one point lead, but you're thinking of yourself, so what right, what was it? Sixteen fifteen something like that, and then the Celtics just blow them out of the water. If you turned it off, and I get why you would. Dallas did
creep back in the third. They cut it to eight, they were down twenty five, they cut it to eight, and then Boston calls the time out and they're like, okay, let's regroup, let's refocus, and let's do what we were doing earlier in the game. They go on a fourteen nothing run, or maybe it was fourteen to two. Either way, it
was a dominant run. I said to you yesterday, I said, when I brought up the article of the top fifteen players in this series, and the webs one of the websites said it was Luka Dacic, and I thought, I said, it's kind of easy to say that because he's a scorer and it's kinetic energy. That's where we go to. We go to the guys who score, right, we need to think differently, find the guys
who have the best overall game. This is where sometimes I get in trouble and getting a little bit of a heated debate with colleagues of mine, because I want the guys who are going to a bring it every night? Okay, b who are I think super tough? Remember what Jim Leland said the other day when we had him on our program a couple of days ago. If you missed it, Jim Leland, when I asked him, how do
you you watch so many players? You're watching guys' stance, You're watching their hands, You're watching their swing, You're watching their their power shift, you watch how they feel, how they throw, all these different nuances and skill sets of a specific athlete, in this case baseball. How do you determine one guy from another? What are you looking for specifically that maybe we don't
see? And among other things, he was talking about toughness. All right, you got to be mentally tough, physically tough for sure, but especially mentally tough, and I hes felt like I mean with the Celtics. That's why I said, I think Jalen Brown, who was the best player on the floor last night's Jlen Brown. There's no doubt about that. Not because he scored twenty two points. Christodd Porzingis had twenty off the bench. That's a huge plus. We can talk about that a little bit later on.
But not just because he scored twenty two points. What about the pestering defense that he played. Look how good he was at both ends of the floor. I like Jason Tatum, he had a double double. He struggled with his shot, But give me Jlen Brown. Man seven for twelve from the floor, hit a couple of threes. It's terrible at the free throw line, which surprised me. Had twenty two points to lead Boston, who had a really balanced scoring attack. Six boards, a couple of assists, three
steals, three blocks, tied for the team leading blocks. Statistically, moving forward, when teams are going well, one of the things you want to look at assist to turnover ratio. Okay, Boston had twenty three assists twelve turns. Dallas had nine assists eleven turns. Dallas had nine assists on thirty five field goals made. In contrast, Boston had twenty three dimes on thirty
nine field goals made. That's a huge difference share the basketball. If you were watching, Jason Kidd, the head coach of Dallas Mavericks, was kind of miked up and said to his guys, hey man, we got to move the ball. There's too much isoball too much. People try to do it themselves. Luka Dancic shill let everybody with thirty And this is not a It's not that I don't like Dancic. I've said he's got an incredible shot. To me, Ben, you can tell me if you think completely different.
I think he looks a little heavy face, body doesn't look super toned. I think the guy's an absolute siev defensively. I just don't like him on defense. He seems to give up on plays. He seems to be almost lack luster at times with a basketball. He's incredible talent. I'm an unbelievable shooter. Just not a huge fan of his game. At the other end, and that bothers me. Kyrie Irving was steimy too. We'll get to that when we come back, got to hit a brake. It's ten

If you missed any of our conversation with Michael Harra, who's retiring on Monday and has covered the Lions for decades and is in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, we're going to play that at seven eighteen seven to eight. Later on this morning, we were talking a little bit about the NBA Finals. Just before the break. Kyrie Irving, who's
been a fantastic player who has admitted some of his mistakes. I don't know about you, but I like athletes who are willing to say, you know what, I'm I was wrong, I'm human. I wasn't my best self in Boston. If I were a Boston Celtics fan, I sure wouldn't appreciate him flipping me off if I were at the game and saying some of the things that he said. So I get it. But he knew he was wrong. He admitted it. How many of us are infallible? How many
of us have never been wrong? I mean, we may not always say we're sorry or that we were wrong, which is one of our many, you know, problems in life. People just have a hard time saying that. But Kyrie Irving did that. He's willing to admit his mistake. Good for him, But he wasn't very good yesterday. Twelve points and a career low one assist. Game two is Sunday. That was a huge disappointment, all right. A couple of other things. Adam hadwin and leads the first
run of the Memorial Cards sixty six six under sixty six. Scotti Scheffler is a shot back at five hundred par four. Others sit at four under, including Colin Morikawa and Xander Schaffley Egospia Tech. You may not know much about women's tennis. I'm not asking you to do that, but I'll tell you this. This young lady at twenty three years old is unbelievable. Like she's just a minute big, she's just little, but man is she powerful.
Cocoa Goff is an excellent tennis player. She's ranked third in the world. He gets Fiotec beat her in straight sets, no problem, and it's eleven and one all time against her. You talked about ekryptonite. She's not won twenty straight matches at Paris. She's probably going to win her third consecutive French Open and fourth in the last five years. That's how dominant she's been on clay. I want to get to this because I'm interested to hear your thoughts.
We might have to bring it up a little bit later on in the show because the six hour, six o'clock hour doesn't get a ton of traction unfortunately. But Dan Campbell said this the other day. Because the Lions continue to do this the OTA, they've excused the veterans that the rookies are there. They've got a couple more days, a few more days here this week to try and get them a little bit more comfortable and understanding the schemes and
so on and so forth. He told the media about what his message to his team is, and part of the message is, and it's dead on right as usual with Dan Campbell. Here's what he said. I think, just remember what we're playing for. I want, just each individual, what do you want? What do you want out of this year? What do you want to look like when we're sitting here and it's February? What's in your mind? I want the whole Enchilada. I mean, obviously a super
Bowl. And most players are pretty open about it about with their coach, but not necessarily publicly. Lions have talked openly about the super Bowl in the smart How do you feel about that? Do you feel like it's the proverbial cart before the horse. Campbell has said that he wants his team to think backwards. He wants them to think super Bowl first. Remember how looked at how strong they looked jumping out to a seventeen point lead in San Francisco in
the NFC Championship Game. You remember it so he's telling him work backwards, start with a big picture of mine. Super Bowl fifty nine New Orleans, recognize what it takes to get there, and then do it so often. And I think perhaps we in Detroit do this as much as, if not more than anybody as a belief, you have to experience something first before you accomplish the goal. You have to experience almost heartache. It's a learning lesson. We saw it with the Pistons, and this is where it kind of
forms within us. This is where we feel like, Okay, this is the learning time for those individuals, and once they've learned this, now they'll know how to scale the mountain. I just don't believe that. I really don't, and I know there's examples of it. I want to know how you feel about it. Here's part of the reason I say this. We think, well, you tried. He had to learn a lesson against San Francisco in the NFSC Championship Game, and that should help them help them.
What win the NFC Championship Game this year? Does that mean they have to lose a Super Bowl in order for them to win a Super Bowl? Correct me if I'm wrong, But the San Francisco forty nine ers didn't learn from their Super Bowl loss a few years ago because they didn't beat Kansas City last year. I just don't get it, and I think it's because our teams have experienced something similar to that. I bring up the Pistons. Okay,
remember the Detroit Pistons winning their first championship. Maybe some of you are way too young for that. I don't know. I remember it. I remember it well, all right, Well, I also remember, you know what it took to get there, the heartaches. But I also remember, Look, not all those heartaches were rewarded soon thereafter. Right. Detroit's first championship came in nineteen eighty nine. They had lost the finals the year before.
That was part of a huge run where Detroit made the postseason nine straight years, right nineteen eighty four through nineteen ninety two. They losing the conference first round in eighty four losing the conference semis. So you're thinking, I mean, based on this logic, Okay, then next year we should get to the conference finals. Right, Nope, losing round one. In nineteen eighty six, back to the conference finals. Lost, Wait what about the learning
lesson? Then lost in the finals. Then won in the finals each of the next two years, then lost in the Eastern Conference finals. Oh that's when Chicago learned. Oh that's right. It's not always a progressive learning scale, is kind of my point. Red Wings lost in ninety five to the New Jersey Devils. What happened in ninety six? They didn't win the championship, they didn't win the Stanley Cup. There's no guarantee. I want, I want the Lions to kick that proverbial door down too. But there are
as many people think I'm not always a big believer in this either. There are certain windows. I think there are best chances for teams, for sure, but the window, I mean, if you believe in that for loop, then that windows you better take advantage of it pretty quick. I just don't believe in that hole. Okay, now we've gone through this. Now we're ready. There's plenty of examples of teams winning it first time. They're
there. Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City Meyer hotlines open forty eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. You could text sports Radio to twenty one thousand. Just your thoughts mentally? How do you get yourself geared up for Game two? Just grateful for the experience to get through game one, you know, just a lot of emotions going into it and just waiting for the opportunity to get out there and
compete, you know, going against the great Celtics teams. So we just had to get this one out the way, and we didn't perform the way we would have wanted to tonight. You know, it starts with me just being able to get out there and get us settled. I got to take some accountability for it, just the communication and just going out there and getting used to the way that the kind of environment was going to be. But I think my teammates did a great job of staying together sticking to the game
plan. We obviously made some mistakes, like I said, but we gave ourselves a chance in the second half, and we just got to continue to do the right things and win the quarters as much as we can. They came out and hit us in the mouth early, got the home crowd going into it down seventeen in the first quarter. It's not really like us to
give up thirty seven points. It's happened to us before in the playoffs, but we just wanted to make it a lot tougher on them, and they hit a lot of threes, and again, when you get them rolling like that, they play a very easy game the rest of the game, and we just got to hit them in their mouth a little bit. They did their job gain in game one, but we're going to take our lessons and
get ready for a good game too. Kyrie Irving after the one oh seven eighty nine loss last night, Dallas's lowest output in the playoffs, very mature, been there, done that, not worried type answer. Right, what he said, this is what I've said for a long time, though, I mean, we overuse the word great so often. He said, Now, I thought my teammates did a great job. No they didn't. Your teammates did. It's okay. I don't expect him to say my teammates did
a terrible job, but don't go there. You shot forty one percent from the floor, actually forty one point seven percent. You made seven threes, that's it. You had nine assists. That is not great. They haven't done a great job at all. They didn't win one quarter they won, Yeah, they didn't win a quarter, did they? Oh? The third? Yeah, they outscored Boston by a point in the third. So I
personally, no, that's that's not great. But I understand, you know, it's like it's it's kind of a trap that we all fall into to a certain extent, So I get it. I thought, what was fascinating to me is before the game, and this was I think it was yesterday, maybe it was two days ago where Jason Tatum talked about the pressure. During media availability on Wednesday, he was asked by members of the media about the pressure, especially in Boston because you know they've got seventeen titles, right,
seventeen? Is there a different level of pressure? He said, oh, absolutely, He said, in Boston, the only hang NBA championship banners. It's not no disrespect to the Lions, but it's not Ford Field. You're not hanging division championships and stuff. You hang championship banners. That's all that matters, especially when you've done it as long as they've done it, And he said some of the greatest players to ever play the game were the
uniform of the Boston Celtics. All of us are honored to follow in their footsteps, the way they've paved for us to live out our dream. What a great answer. You want to endear yourself to a fan base, talk about the tradition, the respect, and the aura of wearing that same uniform.
Certain places you can't. You're not doing that yet in a place like Oklahoma City, with all due respect, but when you've they tried to instill that people new people to the organization has tried to do that with the Pistons. This is what being a Piston means. But it hasn't been that way for a long time. Right, look at the last five six years. It's been really tough for you and I to swallow, hasn't it. Last time they were at five hundred was twenty nineteen. Last time they were over
five hundred it was twenty sixteen. So very challenging for us. Right when you're finishing five out of five in the division, five out of five, five out of five, five out of five, four out of five. That's why it's been the last five years horrific. Fourteen wins, seventeen wins, twenty three wins, twenty wins, twenty wins. It doesn't work, But in Boston, Jason Tatum company, you better embrace that. You better
understand the environment. So he said, if you want to be one of the greats, to put on this uniform, every great before, you want a championship. That's what we try and play for every single season. The expectations are obviously different here. It takes special players to be here and to be part of an environment like that, that's awesome. I flip and love that, man, I do. I think it's so cool. Maybe it's
too much for some athletes, then you probably don't want them there. That phrase, that statement got me so fired up when I read it, and I thought to myself, damn it, that's how people should be in this state. If you want to be one of the greats, to put on this uniform every grape before you won a championship. That's what we try and play for every single season. Now, you couldn't do that in Detroit.
Not every great player won a championship. So for example, with the Red Wings, John O'grodnek was a hell of a player, didn't win a championship, all right. Adam Oates was a hell of a player in Detroit, although most of his career was in Washington. But you get my point. He didn't win a championship. So you can't say that necessarily. But the many of the greats, whether it be Gordy Howe or Ted Lindsay or Harry Sachak or Steve Eisman or surrogate Federal for Brendan Shan and Nick Linstrom, they
did win championships. The greats for the Pistons, I know Dave Bing didn't win one, didn't win with the Celtics, Bob Lanier didn't win one. Grant Hill didn't win one. So that's unfortunate that that phrase wouldn't necessarily work there wouldn't work with the Tigers either, But that's the standard that needs to be set. Don't you think that's why this kind of goes full circle here? That's why I like that. Dan Campbell said, let's think Super Bowl
backwards? What's wrong with that? This is not the Prince of Wales Trophy where you're afraid to touch it after winning the conference championship. Let's go after it. The expectations have to be different. What did I say yesterday? If you were listening, I said, I am tired, just like you are. I am tired of the word patience. We have said it after so many different seasons, with so many different teams. To the Lion's credit,
they haven't said that. What look at look at the three teams that have been out of the playoffs for a long time in Detroit, the Pistons. What do we say, Well, you gotta be you gotta have patients because you got a new owner, you got a new GM. Troy Weavers coming in. Suddenly five years go by and nothing. Steve Eisman tells everybody this is going to be a long process. Rebuilding is difficult. That's a nice way of saying, we've got to be patient. Scott here said the
same thing, coming in. Got to be patient. Hey man, I got news for all these people. The fan base has been patient. At what point does it turn from the fans being patient to the organization raising expectations because we're not seeing it right now and we deserve it. Why is it that other teams? And look, if you think, boy, it's quite a convenient argument, shop, quite a convenient argument considering the Celtics are in
the NBA finals. Maybe you're right about that. You know, maybe I'm using this and quite out, but in fairness to me, I am using it as part of the Lions conversation too. Granted they went to the NFC Championship, but I'm using as part of that. But play why can the Celtics make the playoffs every single year since twenty fifteen? They had a bump in fourteen, They had made the playoffs seven previous years to that. You know why? I know they haven't won on one NBA finals since two thousand
and eight. Anything as possible. Kevin Garnett, crap, It's a pretty regular occurrence for that franchise. The expectations do not change. Why should the expectations change in Detroit for any of their teams? Circumstances can be different. Absolutely, stan Van Gundy screwed things up absolutely. Troy Weaver wasn't any better. Absolutely, end of his tenure. Ken Howland struggled absolutely, although he's got his team in the Stanley Cup finals. I get all that, I
really do. I understand that Alavila made some horrible trades. Where does the expectation start? Ownership, front office, fans, all the above. We've settled. Can we just be honest here? We have settled. There's too many times, and I can be just as guilty, all right, So I'm not gonna sit here and throw any talk show host or any commentator, or any anchor or any pregame hosts. I'm not gonna throw anybody under the
bus because I've been as guilty as anybody. We have settled for complete mediocrity. I got in truck. I said this a couple of years ago when the Tigers season ended, and my partner said, We've got to be patient,
and I said, I am tired of that. Haven't won a championship since nineteen eighty four, Folks, they're going to celebrate forty flipping years of that, and we're going to sit here and constantly tell it, try to tell fans about how great this player may be when he's not he's average at best, or how we have to be patient again because you've got to let young guys develop. It's such I'm so tired of it. I'm so tired of talking about an NBA finals where you got the Boston Celtics in it.
Again. They were just in the finals three years ago, you know that, right, or two years ago? I'm sorry, conference finals. Won the conference finals this year, lost in the conference finals last year, lost in the finals the year before. They were in the conference finals four years ago. Meanwhile, the Pistons aren't doing Diddley squad and we're saying, well, we just got to be patient. Now Trajan Lanning times comes in, Oh, we got to be patient with that now too. We're resetting the
clock on a regular basis. Why do we do that? Is it reality? I'm not claiming to know what we can do about it. I'm not telling you not to go to games. That's one of my favorite things. You know, you got hostschool out there and go You know what, you guys are idiots? What are you going to games for? Hey, screw you. People want to go see a baseball game, Let me go see a baseball game. You want to go see a basketball game, go ahead. You can go to a game. You could support your team and still
be upset at how that team goes about its business. You're only going to go to a game when your team is winning, when you feel like it's doing the right thing. Now, I wouldn't buy season tickets if they're constantly spitting in your face. But who says you can't go to a game. Who says you shouldn't go to a game. Who says you shouldn't root for that team even though that team is less than subpar, not doing what they're supposed to be doing. But the bar do you guys remember when Martin Morningway
came in and was the head coach of the Alliance. Man, what a disaster, Oh god, what a disaster. One of the things what he say the bar is high used to make fun of him for saying that. But I understood his point. He said the bar is high now it ended up being very very low for him. Didn't know what the hell he was doing. Another example of an alliance coach failed, never went on to be another head coach coordinator. Yes, coach, Oh, Dick, J're on
the last one, I believe right. Yes. So when you sit there and you look at this and you listen to his words, you're laughing at it. We laughed at him, We made fun of him. I was part of it. We all made fun of him. Guess what, he was right, The bar has to be high now. He couldn't reach it because he wasn't good enough. His front office wasn't good enough, his players weren't good enough. He couldn't overcome it. I don't think he was a
very good coach at all. However, the message was the right message. Dan Campbell's message doesn't have the cliche, but the Dan Campbell message is dead on. Think super Bowl, expect it. Now? What are you going to do to go about and get it? We need more of that and if you fall short, then so be it. You can't take people's ridicule at the end of a season because they're going you thought you were going to get to the super Bowl. You didn't even win the division. That has
to be the mindset. Don't tell me there's an athlete or a coach, a manager, or a GM who goes into season says, well, we're going to suck this year. That reality may slap you in the face at some point, but you can't have that mindset going in, at least I hope you wouldn't. If your expectations for the Tigers for thirty one and thirty one after sixty two games, shame on you if you're part of the organization, is what I'm saying. I said at the beginning of the year,
this team should be good. Note the word should. This team should should be good, and this team should win the division. That's the expectation I said last year, or before the red Wing season was over, this team should make the playoffs. They didn't. I think I think they failed. I think it's a failure. I can be realistic, too, I'm very realistic. If you're down in Miami the Marlins, the expectations are not there,
but damn we sit there and we act like patience is fine. We'll complain about it a lot, but then We'll get out here and as a host with a microphone, we'll sit there and try to convince you, well, you got to be patient, oh bull roar, get after it. Raise the expectation level of your organization. Understand what it takes to win. Understand that things can happen, like injuries, for example, guys having off seasons. I get all that, But the expectations have to change. Man.
You've got to raise the bar for this state and for this team. This is not a John Jonathan Smith type situation where he comes in brand new to Michigan State and you think they're going to win the Big Ten. That's not that's not realistic. It's not You can change those expectations a little bit later on, a couple of years from now, but not this year. We're sitting here every single year the word patients. It gets old. I'm
tired of it. Get your phone number, get your phone calls in on the Meyer hotline eight six six eight three, eight forty eight forty three, or you can text the program. D I the Pizza Man dot com. Together we can make a difference. Welcome back second hour of the program, Greg camp You will join us at eight thirty five for the Oakland University head basketball coach earning the contract extension. He'll join us at eight thirty five. We will replay in our next segment, replay our conversation with Michael Herrad about eighteen after the hour. Mike
joined us yesterday talk about his experiences in the Lions this year. Dan Campbell also said something yesterday that I thought was pretty interesting, and that is, you know, we can't do Ron Burgundy. We can't just read off the prompter. You've got to do. You've got to do something different. This team understands that they've had guys who've reached the Super Bowl. I'm glad our expectations. I'm glad. I'm glad the organization's expectations are the same as the
fans expectations. Good for you. We've gotten there. They helped us along because of what they did a year ago. We've gotten there minus a catastrophe Jared Goff getting injured for the entire season, perhaps a guy like Hutchinson or Sewell getting injured for the entire season, or a rag Now I might add, the expectations is getting and winning the Super Bowl. That's the way it should be. Others, other organizations should have the same expectations. Now,
the Tigers, we've talked a lot about. The Tigers announced something yesterday that did not go over very well. I'm not sure who's handling this stuff. It's just have you ever heard the phrase take the temperature in the room. It's basically telling you understand what's going on here before you deliver a joke, news, a line, whatever. The Tigers apparently want to create premium seating, what they call experiences for fans, and they've wanted to do it for
a while. Why they choose to announce it now is beyond me. I don't understand it. If your team is doing what the New York Yankees are doing and winning forty five games to lead all of baseball, I can understand why you might make the announcement. Folks. We're forty five and nineteen. We've got the most road wins of anybody in baseball. But it's really the home ballpark that makes the difference, and we're going to allow that difference to
be felt by you. We're announcing new premium seating experience coming to Yankee Stadium in twenty twenty five. The Tigers in the meantime, what do they do? They announce this, Ladies and gentlemen. We're second to last place. We're nine and a half back, we're thirty one up, thirty one down, playing better as of late. But hey, guess what, We've got premium seating experiences for you starting next year. It's a great project. It's
going to provide significant upgrades to the fan experience that was met poorly. You see, the beauty of being down low at a ballpark is the opportunity for fans to go there and get autographs as guys come off for batting practice or go out to batting practice. That's an experience. Now what you're going to do is create a home plate club and have new loge boxes. Sounds great, doesn't it. But people were pissed about this. They are not happy
at all. Ryan Gustafson, the president, says, our goal is to continue investing in creating a variety of best in class experiences for all fans. Here's what fans want. They'll watch from a high school field. If you give them a championship product, people have to I don't I've never understood how people don't see the big picture in things, have a pulse of what fans are experiencing right now. You should know that coming out with this type of
promotion, that's really that's not fair. It's not a promotion, this type of news to try and sell to fans, to get to get them excited about. What's going to be the response. You know what the response is going to be, right, what is it? The response is to see what a five hundred baseball team, a team that doesn't win, invest in the product on the field. That's what they're going to say. And that's
exactly what they have been saying. You want us to get fired up over new lows boxes, the home Plate Club while your team is average at best. What are you doing to get us fired up about our baseball team. I remind people this all the time. We don't have a large window of good comfortable days in this state, do we. What would you say it
would be? What's the range mid May through what mid September? Maybe people want to go on their boats, People want to go up north, people want to go golfing, They want to enjoy their backyard barbecue, they want to have people over on their back porch on a Friday night, and all that other stuff. They put your game on great, they get fired up about your team super in order for you to get them to your ballpark and miss out on some of the other things that they don't have a large window
to do, you better put a decent product on the field. Do they have a decent product? Does it make you say, yes, I'm going to leave this, I'm gonna postpone this, I'm not gonna do this so I can go down there. Not the home Plate Club, not that quote unquote best in class experience for all fans. First of all, it's not for all fans. Second of all, people aren't going to be all kinds of fired up for that unless you're going to put a winning product on the
field. The high end experience built beneath the stands and located on the service level between the two clubhouses. Now, I will say this, I like the opportunity to do that at the right time. I don't know when the right time is, but it sure isn't right now, I don't believe. But I do like that opportunity. Dodgers have it, a lot of high end teams have it. They do it makes for something you're gonna put something else together. Great, you're taking out four hundred and ninety seats behind home
plate. They're going to insert three hundred and fifty premium seats in that area. So they're going to give you something. It sounds like a cool experience. I just don't know how many people feel that it's worth it right now. Eventually, it should it have been done a long time ago. Should you have had the foresight to do it, much like when the Palace did
it before everybody else? Yes? Is there ever a good time? You bet there is doesn't mean it's now and the announcement coming in early June while your team is mairred at five hundred is probably not ideal either. It's great for you because you view it as an experience that'll take your franchise to a different level, but you're not thinking like a fan right now. The fan
is not happy because of the way the team is performing. When we come back michael'hera, we interviewed him yesterday, we'll replay the interview about his tenure as a Lions beat writer, why you should be encouraged with these years Lions team, and some pretty good stories. Really fortunate to be able to bring in this next guest. He's as admired as maybe any writer who has ever written the state
of Michigan. I mean, there are certain writers where you look at and you say, you know what, I believe him. That's not always easy. A lot of people feel like they have been fortunate to work with a legend like Mike O'Hara, who's in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and rightfully so, he's been doing it as well as anybody. From nineteen sixty six through two thousand and eight he was of the Detroit News and after that time with the Lions in on Lions dot com, and he's been a Lions
beat writer since nineteen seventy seven. He has served his country and he has served this area so gracefully and so well. And he joins us now that he's going to retire on Monday, and rightfully so. Michael Harris with us here on Excess and Bros. Michael, thank you congratulations. It's so well deserved. How did you know it was time? It just felt that way, And I think I was probably a year late. I probably should have been tired last year, not this year. Yeah, not this year.
Just it's just the things that were easy to do were quite as easy, and just just I just had that feeling that it's time to go. But you I guess I think I kind of got caught up in the new organization and all that. I could just see see what they had in this last year, and it turned out they had a lot. And I don't regret staying another year. I really don't. Yeah, I don't think anybody who reads your synopsis, your breakdowns, your analysis, uh fee feels that either
what have you enjoyed most about your career? Well, you know, I'm not a player, so I can't, but it's very similar to that for
us. You know, it's the test room, just you know, kind of theme to work and the insults start to fly and and all of that, and then I start to talk about things in the game, and you know, it's still competing, don't get me wrong, but but you know what it's like to start talking about what happened yesterday, what might happen tomorrow, you know, And that was the fun part, just sort of interacting with with guys from you know, from the other other papers and other media
outlets. That that was really to me the front of the business. What's interesting, too, is that this team might have its best opportunity. You would know this better than I, but this team might have its best opportunity to reach the Super Bowl, and you may not be able to write about that if you're leaving on Monday. Did you ever think about that as you were contemplating this decision? Well, that's why I stayed another for this year was another season we just had no I thought about it. Yeah, but
no I didn't. They wouldn't do it for that reason. I really wouldn't. By the way, I just like to mention one thing. Guy who's made all of this a lot easier is Tim twenty than you know. He came over from the Detrade News here a lot a year before I did, and I think he's probably one of the most prolific writers. I've ever been proud in my life. He just does so many things, does it so well. It's just it's really been a pleasure looking with Tim Yeah, it's
a great point. He's excellent at what he does and he yeah, he really is, and he sent something out on Twitter. He's been so well accommodating, endearing and understanding and willing to learn. I mean, it's it's funny. Even when you do it for as long as you and Tim has done, you can still learn from people. And absolutely yeah, and he wrote, Look, legend I'm so fortunate to have been able to work with and learn from Mike at both the Detroit News and here with the Lions over
the last twenty years. It's not like he staked a claim to his territory and said, I'm sorry, I feel threatened by a legendary writer. Instead, he opened his arms to you. And I think you've done that for quite a few people as well, so many stories with the Detroit Lyons. I'm sure you get asked this all the time by people. So I'll just be one in the many of a line of people who've asked you this.
Is there any one particular player or storyline that sticks out to you in all the years you've covered this franchise, Well, this one really stands out, and it is not a good one. I don't think that Berry Sanders retirement
was that was one and I was expecting it. I really was. And I'll tell you a quick, little quick story that one of the writers for ESPN had had just a little item in his column that off season that Barry wasn't happy and he sort of had a sense of that, you know, And so I called his father, William, who I got to know somewhat not you. We want close friends, but he was always accommodating to talk.
And I said, mister Williams dot Williams. Anyway, I said, I asked him to say, but I read on Sports Illustrated and I said, what's the deal and he said, he's sick of them, He's sick of us. Oh boy, this is going to be something. It turned out to be just a Blackbusters story from that moment until Barry Sanders, you know, did not show up for training camp three months later or whatever it
was. And then then and then it was just to me that was probably the biggest story that I covered, was involved with or what whatever you want to call it. Michael, by the way, I'm sorry, I just want to think so it wasn't my favorite because I wanted to see Barry Sanders play and not just a great player, but a great person too, But to me was the most obviously had the most impact. Michael here joining us here on Exis and Bros. He retires Monday, and he's a Michigan Sports
Hall of Famer. He's been the reason you read about the Lions for for so many decades. When you when you look back at all the teams and all the players you've covered, is there what what's the biggest misnomer that people failed to realize about a player or this franchise? That the Fordes don't want to don't care about winning and losing, and they can't care very much about
it. That's why they've made so many changes. And I'm just going since I came on the beat in nineteen seventy seven, you know, for they add up the number of coaching changes and personnel changes and all that, but we'd be here for a month and a half or something like that. They put all that together. But you know, they care very much and they
always have, always will through different generations. You know, mister William clay Ford had passed away, and think it was nineteen nineteen eighty, nineteen eighty for something like twenty I'm sorry, twenty fifteen. And then his wife, Martha Firestone Ford took over and absolutely committed to winning. And then now Sheila hamp the daughter and who really has been on the just the front line there of changing things for the Detroit Lions. And she's been successful. She's had
a success that the other ones haven't had for whatever reason. What do you like about this Lions team? Young players with talent and speed? I like speed, and they have that. They have a lot of other excusely a lot of other things too, but they have some interchangeable purpose and and I don't think if you look at that team, look, nobody has it all.
And it's just it's it's impossible, what really is because no matter how well things are going, you're going to have they're going to change personnel from one season to the next. I mean, there's a been somebody came up with a figure one time, on the average, thirty percent of your rosteril channel from one season to the next. I don't know if that's exactly true, but I'm sure it's not staying off. And so that's the hard part
is putting all these players back together. But the however, they've done and through the just great drafting, you know, really the Brad Holmes, the general manager, and with the head coach Dan Campbell, you know, chiming in, they've really been able in three years, the first three years because we haven't seen this his team play yet, but in the first three years, excuse me, they've really put together good players, not just first round
players, but you know, all the way through, through through the roster and through the draft, they've been able to put together good players on the field for the and they're going to be good, not just this year and next to it, They're going to be good for a while. They really are. They only have, like any aging players that they have to get rid of. The pretty solids have topped about him. He's been writing in
this area since nineteen sixty six. He's covered the lines since nineteen seventy seven. He's a Hall of Famer. He's Michael Harra. Mike, thanks for your time, Congratulations, appreciate the friendship and all that you've done and keeping things interesting for Lions fans, whether they're winning or losing. You deserve this, my friend. Congrats Hey Check, thanks thanks for calling me. I appreciate it. Good stuff with Michael Harry yesterday. Hope you enjoyed it.
He will have the rest of this weekend to write and then he's done, and there are things to talk about with the Detroit Lions a lot, it might be a little. And I asked him off the air about this when he and I first talked a couple of nights ago, and look, this is a this is a time where you want to cover teams like the Lions, because not only are they good now, but they should be keywords, should good for a long time. But there comes a point in time where
you're like, Okay, I've done this long enough. I've achieved everything I could want, and I have to be able to dictate things myself. And he's doing that, and I give him a ton of credit for doing it.
I love what he's brought to the table for us. For a long time, we've had we've been very fortunate in this town and in this state some really exceptional writers in a lot of different areas, not just Michae O'Hara, but also Kurt Sylvester, for example, a long time ago writing about the Lions, Tim Twentyman right now, many of the players, many of the people day, Bri Kett. We've had them on Kyle Minkey, guys
who have done a really nice job of covering various sports. Mick McCabe has done it for decades covering high school athletics, and we'll have him on someday here on Axes and Bros. But it's been an enjoyable ride. Oftentimes those rides have to come to an end, unfortunately, and for Mike O'Hara and those who appreciated and enjoyed his writing, it has as well. About an
hour from now, Greg Campy will join us on Exes and Bros. Talk about his contract extension and talk a little bit about why he remains at Oakland University, what a job he has done. All right back with you on the ex Bros. Thirty five after the hour. One hour from now, Craig Campy will join us, the head coach of Oakland University of Basketball. What are they doing right now? What's going on with all the things that they may have on their plate
and how they're handling it. His contract extension, his run in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, all those things nil. How is the landscape change. There's a lot of things to discuss with him, and we will do that with Greg Campy at eight thirty five. Speaking of college basketball, Dan Hurley is expected to have a face to face with the Lakers today. It's kind of crazy, isn't it. JJ Reddick was the name everybody was thrown around like it was a done deal, and suddenly Dan Hurley's name is thrust
into the conversation and he will be in for an infa interview today. We do know that he has in the past talked about wanting to be part of an NBA coaching staff, want to be a head coach in the NBA. I just we touched on this a little bit the other day. I just don't know how his it's not personality, it's his coaching style fits the NBA game. It is totally different man. If he happens to get the gig, he would be the twelfth college coach in the last thirty years to reach
the NBA coaching fraternity. The combined winning percentage of the eleven coaches before him is forty five percent. And it's not like those guys were bad coaches in college and decided to move on. John Beeline, who I know well, won just fourteen games. He's an excellent coach, excellent coach, and after fifty four games resigned. Why well, players work differently in the NBA college coaches. Not that NBA coaches don't watch film. They do, but you
have an opportunity to educate and peach more at the collegiate level. How's that guys at the NBA. That's not what it's about anyway. So John Beelin was one of them. Billy Donovan made the jump in twenty fifteen. He's only one of two coaches who left college to go to the NBA who has a winning record in the NBA and he's still coaching five years with a thunder. Also was the head coach of the Bulls, Right yeah. Fred Hoiberg made the jump the same year, went from Iowa State to the Bulls,
spent four years there. A little friction between him and it was Jimmy Butler at the time. He's now back at the collegiate level. He's still at Nebraska, right yeah. Brad Stevens is the other coach besides Billy Donovan on the list to have a winning record in the NBA, and then of course bumped up to the Celtics front office. And look at what he's done.
You talk about a guy who knows what he's doing. You were looking for a guy who has a vision, a guy who can coach, relate, talk to the players, and then has a vision on top of all that. You bet Brad Stevens is that guy. He's he knows so much about what he's doing. He might be a guy I would if I were an owner and I really wanted things to done the right way, I might take him and give him part ownership in order to lure him from where he is
now in Boston. You would give him a partial ownership piece. He took Butler to two final fours, left for the Celtics eight years there, missed the playoffs just once and that was his first year. By the way, went to three conference finals. He was coach of the year or no, he was close to being coach of the Year. He would as a finalist quite a few times. I don't know exactly how many, but quite a few times. And now he's the president of basketball Operations, Danny Ainge leaves,
Stevens takes over. You want to know, not a huge Celtics fan, okay, but if you really want to know how to build an organization the right way, look at what Boston has done. Every franchise makes mistakes, but look at what they've been able to do. Danny Age as much as you and I despised him as a player, not at BYU, not with the Toronto Blue Jays, but as a member of the Boston Celtics, as a player, that dude went to the front office and knew what the
hell he was doing. He did a really good job in the front office in Boston. And then when he's gone, they bring in Brad Stevens and look at what he's done. Consistency, expectations, a way of doing certain things right. This is how we do it here. It's not a song. It is a song, but it's not one that I'm referring to here. But this is how we do it here, and this is how we're going to continue to do it. This is the blueprint for success with our
franchise. So Brad Stevens Billy Donovan the only two who had winning records overall as head coaches after making the leap from college to pro. Reggie THEUS is another. He left New Mexico State and went to Sacramento. It wasn't long season and a half not good. Got fired is second year when he started six and eighteen. Do you remember Mike Montgomery? He was at Stanford, had a Final Four appearance at night, was coach of the Year, inducted
into the College Basketball Hall of Fame, went to the NBA. Took over the Golden State Warriors. Two years there, thirty four up, forty eight down in both seasons. Then he got the boot. Leonard Hamilton. I had forgotten this one. Leonard Hamilton coached at Miami, So the Hurricanes was pretty damn good there, right, Oklahoma State Miami then went to the Washington Wizards. Lasted one season nineteen wins, the fewest in their twenty four year
history at the time. Lon Krueger. I remember Lon Krueger Illinois? He went to Atlanta. How long did Lon Krueger last? Long? Twenty seven games into his third season, fired Tim Floyd Iowa State. Then Chicago. Boy, you think the Chicago Bulls would learn a little bit. The Chicago Bulls do it with Fred Hoiberg. They did with Tim Floyd. Prior to Fred Hoiberg. Tim Floyd was really good at Iowa State, couldn't get it done in Chicago or Charlotte. I think he was head coach at Charlotte there
too, And then of course two others. John Kellapari, we all remember that he was at UMass then went to the nets. Everybody thought it was a coup, this is going to be great. Lasted two and a half seasons. He was three and seventeen in his third season in and they said enough is enough, goodbye. And then PJ. Carlosono Seaton Hall than Portland. Now he had a longer run. Three years in Portland, led him to the playoffs each time, couldn't get out of the first round. Then
went to Golden State. You remember the Latrelle Spreewell choking incident during practice. Fired after three years with the Warriors, bounced around a little bit, assistant with Brooklyn Seattle. Seattle went to Oklahoma City. So both those two organizations and now as an analyst on TV Slash Radio, those are the quote unquote legacies that you'd be looking at if you're Danny Hurley. I guess my question would be the money is one thing, right, I mean, it's hard
to tell somebody not to chase. First of all, if you've always wanted to coach the best at what they do, of course you do. I get it. And the money, who's gonna say no to that? I'm sorry. It's a factor. Way of life is a factor. So I get all that. I don't know why teams don't look closer at coaches personalities and how it might relate to the NBA player, not just personalities, because I actually I think John Beelan's personality, the way he coaches it would be
fine for the NBA. It's how you go about it. He was a film hog, always watching film, wanting players to do the same. Just don't do that. He was a fundamentalist. Works so hard at helping players pass to the outside hand, pivot the way they're supposed to do things with the opposite hand as often as they do with their dominant hand. All those things going to help guys up after getting knocked down. Something simple, yes,
but something that was oftentimes taught and expected. Folks, that's just the way the NBA wants it handled. It's a different way of coaching. Ken One of my first questions if I were interviewing a college coach would be, what is it about your style you think works best in the NBA? How will you accentuate that? And then what about your style won't work in the NBA? And how are you going to either eliminate that or curtail that to
make sure it does work. I wonder how many front office people actually ask that question or those questions or even care. See it's the shiny new toy, right, Yeah, I get it. Danny Hurley was phenomenala at Connecticut and I think his team is preseason fifth? Is that right, Ben? I think preseason fifth coming in. So be it. But just because it works at the collegiate level, just because you can coach at the collegiate level doesn't mean that you can coach at the highest level. Would the respect be
there? And I think that's important. Yeah, I do. I think the respect would be there. But look, man, I mean the way you communicate, the way you handle your practices, the way you handle huddles all very important. I think the reason a lot of guys You'll see a lot of coaches who are successful who maybe weren't the greatest player now It's a little different here with Jason Kidd and his success with Dallas. Rick Carlisle wasn't
a great player, but he was around. He played with great players, Larry Bird for example, Kevin McHale, he was with some great players. All those things. They're soaking in that knowledge. There's no doubt about that. He knows how to handle it. Jason Kidd was well aware. But then you've got guys like Joe Minzula. They're not playing, but they understood.
They understand how you communicate, how you motivate NBA players. It'll be a fascinating follow with Danny Hurling to see if that ends up working out with the Lakers or an NBA team down the road. Now, speaking of the NBA, there's a guy who does ESPN and ABC. Now, I'm I don't know how much you're a huge fan of Kendrick Perkins as an analyst, very deadpan, very dry, but it's so subjective so I can appreciate it. But look, he's been doing it for a while now, and give
him credit. He's willing to take on the biggest names in the sport, including Lebron James. Lebron James recently had a statement on a podcast where he said he was so blanking mad that he's not Kyrie Irving's running mate anymore. In the NBA, they won a championship in Cleveland together, as you know, and Kendrick Perkins was pretty ticked off about it. Here's what he said. He said, here we go again, Ron James, weasling his way into somebody else's moment. This is not about you. Your team is at
home. This is about the MAVs and the Celtics. But you're so mad and disappointed that you're not Kyrie's running mate anymore. Here we go again. I give him credit for his willingness to take on a guy that most people will not touch because they're afraid of the repercussions. Now, in fairness, and I'm not I'm sure people who listen to the show realize. I'm not a huge fan of Lebron James, not that he's not a great player.
I'm just talking about the person and how he handles his business and some of the what I consider to be a little conniving. I will say this about him. To his credit, he was giving a lot of love to NBA analyst Doris Burke. He wrote this out on X important moment for our sport tonight. Love and respect to dB Dorisburg and everything she does to elevate all of us. You're a and he put a goat emoji, wrote on on on X now goat she I wouldn't say greatest of all time. I think
Doris does a really good job. She's worked. She works exceptionally hard. Our paths crossed during w NBA's Detroit Shock tenure, and she said that she always wanted to do this, and I give her a massive amount of credit because she set that goal. But she more than anything else, she recognized what she had to do to get there. Nobody out works her. It's awesome. She's she became the first woman to serve as a TV game analyst
for any major men's professional championship event. And I'm sure it'll open the door for more, which none of us should really have a problem with as long as people know what they're talking about. I don't care if it's man or woman, it doesn't matter. But she's done a really good job for ESPN and she's but she hasn't gotten it. She has she has not received the accolades and the positions only because she's a woman. She's done it because she
works hard and she's really good at what she does. So if we're going to take the proverbial shot at Lebron James, you know, coach killer, like we talked about yesterday, trying to take the moment from a guy like Kyrie Irving. According to Kendrick Perkins, do give him some love for recognizing certain other things that are important in the sport too, including what we saw last night on television with Doris Burke as one of the analysts. Eight thirty
five, Greg Campy will join us. I will ask him about Danny Hurley and his thoughts on why college coaches struggle to make that transition, and we'll talk about a lot of other things at a thirty five. Put some golf over the weekend. What do you have to do in order to fill your bag with a golf glove, golf balls, tease some of the essentials you need, Well, you need to find the right deal for a lot of those places. Now, a lot of people go online, a lot of people try to go to the
pro shop. When they show up at a golf course, a lot of people will go where the golf range is. The best place to go is Meyer. And the reason I say that is because they give you the fair price for what you need. Folks, you and I are not trying to get on the PGA Tour. Okay, they have different golf balls for the PGA Tour than they do for you and I out of the rock pile. Let you and I understand this. Let's enjoy the game, but let's not
break the bank while trying to play the game. It's expensive enough to go out there and play a decent track. So why would you want to fill your golf bag with really expensive golf balls from a golf pro shop where they're making so much money off those golf balls. They're already making money off you by some of the things that you're already contributing halfway house, right with the beers and the soda and the hot dogs and the like. Make sure you're
saving your money where you can. Meyer gives you a great deal on some of your golf essentials so you can go out and enjoy the game you love with friends you appreciate. Meyer. We don't need a bunch of cats in here looking in the mirror. I look good. I got my extra bands on, I got my other shoes. Be a doll. We don't need no meals, we don't need no cats. We need more dolls. Time oh yo done. At the time, we weren't good. There's no sense asking me things about the game. I'm telling you we laid an egg. So I'm
not going to break it down for you. He sucks. He sucked, but he laid an egg. That's all I have to say. Guys, I'm sorry. I'm not going to break it down for you. Nothing went well for us. It's on us. We have to figure it out. And we went dag. During the break, I had an opportunity to look at something that was sent out on social media about the Pistons great backcourt in the day, and it was reminiscent of an anniversary where Byron Scott missed Game
one of the NBA Finals. So LA went with a big backcourt, Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper. Johnson was what six' eight Michael Cooper six seven, Tony Campbell former Piston seven Detroit used Joe Dumars and Isaiah Thomas and Vinnie Johnson carve them up. It is a thing of beauty watching those guys, Thomas and Dumars and Johnson dribble into the front court, pull up and hit
mid jumpers. It's phenomenal. God, it was good basketball. Those guys were so fundamentally sound, dribbling, passing, shooting the way they shoot the ball. I don't know how many of you out there had a chance to watch them growing up, but it's just it's awesome. So check that out if you can, just go back YouTube and do whatever real quick. MLB recently sent this out on X Power Pitcher Rankings or Pitcher Power Rankings TREKSC number
one. I don't know if this is like power pitchers is in these guys with the strikeouts, because I mean, otherwise it would be Garrett Crochet he leads the league and strikeouts per nine. Second would be Sonny Gray Saint Louis. Then Freddie Peralta, Jack Flaherty's top five. I mean, that's that's K's per nine. I think it can't be Era. If it's Eer, then you'd have Seth Lugo in there, right, because I think Seth Lugo leads all of baseball in earned run average, but Scooball is number one in
pitcher power rankings. Then Rangers Suarez of Philadelphia. His ERA is one point seven. By the way, he's nine to one on the year. Then his teammate Zach Wheeler era of two point two three strikeouts, ten point two batters per nine. Luis Geel is four, Corbyn Burns five. I read that about Corey mcburns and I think Milwaukee couldn't use that. But Milwaukee's leading the division. Baltimore will take it. Tanner Hawks six, Boston Tyler Glass
now La is seventh, Paul Skeens is eighth. Out Standing rookie from Pittsburgh. Shota Imanaga for the Cubs is nine, and Max Freed for the Braves is ten. Braves just keep getting it done, man, even though they lose certain players. Those are your pitcher power rankings courtesy of MLB, and as I mentioned earlier, Derek Scouble will pitch Game two of the series against
Milwaukee. What's in a nickname? How important is the team nickname? The reason I ask this is because the NHL will have a new high team next year and it'll be in Utah. It's the Arizona Coyotes, but they've moved to Utah. They're trying to find a nickname for the franchise. They have
narrowed it down to six. It's either the Utah Blizzard. Now while you're driving, while you're listening, you're either nodding or shaking your head thumbs up or thumbs down, or you know, kind of nose scruff or nodding you're like, oh, I could see that, or no way right. Utah Blizzard is one name that's a thumbs down for me. Utah Hockey Club, that's a thumbs down. That's soccer stuff. It's not hockey. Utah Mammoth three strikes, you're out Utah Outlaws, No Utah ven utaw yetti. What's
the logo of a UTA yetti? This is part of the problem when you just want fans to vote fans. Just seriously, you're going to have a cooler or a cup on your jersey. Let's be real. Maybe it's the Blizzard. I don't know. I don't get where you get some of these names, but not a fan of any any of them. As I read this yesterday, I thought, boy, we're lucky, lucky to have the nicknames that we have. For example, the Red Wings. You know about
the Red Wings nickname, right? James Norris, the Canadian American businessman, he bought the team in nineteen thirty two, and he named it the Winged Wheelers because he used to play for that team. And he chose the Winged wheel as the logo. It was based off a Montreal Amateur Athletic Association logo. He thought that it kind of went along with the auto industry. That's pretty cool. I'm sure you knew that, but in case you didn't, just want to let you know. And of course it's been that way ever
since. To pay homage in that regard has a nice historical significance to it, don't you think. Yeah. Tiger's baseball team nickname believed to have come from the Detroit Light Guard, a military unit that served Detroit for two hundred years. Earned the nickname Tigers during the Civil War. First appeared in an article in the Detroit Free Press back in eighteen ninety five, called them the
Struthers Tigers in honor of that light Guard, and the name stuck. So when the Tigers began playing in the Western League back in eighteen ninety six, they were already being called the Tigers. You know. The Lions went from Portsmouth from the Portsmouth Spartans in nineteen thirty four to Detroit and They were renamed the Lions by George A. Richards, the guy who owned it. He was a radio executive, the guy who owned the Portsmouth Spartans. He chose
the name actually to honor Detroit's baseball team, the Tigers. He thought it represented a pride in the city and he wanted the name to reflect the king of the NFL. Like the lion is king of the jungle. This is going to be King of the NFL. That's why he chose Lions. Whatever the reasoning, and maybe it's just because we're from here and we have used that representation for as long as we've been alive, but it makes sense, right. It's a good association with the city. There's a reasoning behind it.
Reading about Utah and the struggles they're having to figure out what their nickname is going to be made me think, Wow, how fortunate are we to have a a team that has been here for as long as these teams have been here and b to have that association with the city. The reasoning behind it. You get the Pistons. Fred Zolner moved him from Fort Wayne.
The Pistons car industry, winged wheel car industry. Tigers had to do with the story I just told you right regarding the military unit and then the lion's bouncing off that to a certain extent, pretty neat. Just want to share that weather ten after the hour, Don't Forget. It's by a band called Anti Ghost It's called Still Alive. All right, we've got texts to get to. The phone line is open for you Meyer hotline eighty six six eight three eight forty eight forty three the text line
to join the show Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. We're going to be joined by Greg Campy at the bottom of the hour eight thirty five where we talk about his contract extension, Oakland's push in the NCD tournament. How you use that moving forward? The fact that forty five percent of the eleven coaches who've reached the NBA from the college level who made that jump their winning percentage
just forty five percent. Why is that. We'll talk with Greg Campy about that and a whole lot more coming up, but first let's get to some techs. As we mentioned sports radio to twenty one thousand, Ben, who do we got? Yeah? One from Freddie It says, should the Pistons buy out Money Williams and take a shot at Danny Hurley giving him six years at ninety million? Yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure where you get the six years ninety million. At least you come with a plan,
so I give you credit for that. Here, it's not my money first and foremos not my money. I get all that. I just don't understand why we think throwing more money and years at an unproven guy is going to fix the problem. So people are suggesting there have been articles written out West that Danny Hurley and the Lakers contract offer could top one hundred million dollars.
Personally, I think that's irresponsible. I think it's simply ridiculous. But I suppose that's the way the world Monty Williams is under a long term contract here with the Pistons, a guy who has been Coach of the Year, a guy who knows what it takes to win in the NBA. I'm not saying he's the right choice, all right. They lost twenty eight straight games at one point. That's the longest losing streak in NBA history. For crying out loud, However, I'm not a huge believer that you fix the problem by
just going out and creating another one. And whether he's the right guy or not, I suppose remains to be seen. Are you willing to give up on Monty Williams after one year? Again? You signed him to a six year deal worth seventy eight and a half million dollars. He's done one year of that where their mistakes made you bet, and it was early on, by the way, you want to give a guy, so roughly, roughly, Monty Williams is making what seventy eight and a half million dollars six okay,
So he's making thirteen million a year, is that right? Okay? So thirteen million a year, you're gonna have to pay him an additional thirteen million dollars per year over the next five years, you're gonna pay him sixty five million bucks. Then you're going to bring in a guy for six years and ninety million who's never done it at this level. NBA Coach of the Year, NBA guy, a guy in the NBA who got his team to
the postseason. Couldn't done it, couldn't do it in one year. But you're going to bring in a college guy who's never coached NBA players and you're gonna give him that type of commitment. Personally, I would not. It's not my money. I'm not the owner. Now, I'll be truthful here. When the Pistons were pursuing Monty Williams, while people were getting caught up in Coach of the Year and what he's done in Phoenix and all this other stuff, here's what I asked. He said he wanted a break. He
said he wanted out for a period of time. Why did he come back? Was it the challenge? Was it the money? Was it the history of the Pistons. What was the reason you had to go and float out the highest contract for a coach in the NBA to get him to come here. That's troubling. The only reason I'm not saying this is the only reason, but it sure looks like on the surface, the only reason you get him is because of money. That's not the reason you want. So I
would say no to that. But I would have said no to Monty Williams in the first place because they went after him he said no, then they co back went after him again with more money than he said yes. Another text, Ben, what do we got? Yeah, it says Tiger's History five, sixteen and seventeenth. Nineteen eighty seven, Phil nicro and Steve Carlton, both with three hundred wins at the time, threw back to back games versus Jack Morris and Waltterrell. I'm guessing that has never happened in baseball.
Just a guess. Here's a good here's a good little uh nogget if you're talking about Tiger's history. Back in nineteen thirty one, the A's trumps to Tigers twelve to two in their one day road trip to Detroit, made necessary by the Sunday prohibition of baseball in Philadelphia. Tiger stranded eighteen of twenty base runners that day. In nineteen forty four, hell Newhauser he walked nine batters
in six innings in the loss to the White Sox at Comiskey Park. Prince hal, a future Hall of Famer, averaged nearly four and a half bases on balls per nine innings during the nineteen forty four season, and yet he beat teammate Dizzy Trout for the ALMVP. He was twenty nine and eight, had a two point two two ERA, and won the first of his back to back ALMVP awards that year. He walked four and a half batters per nine that's nuts. Also on this date, in two thousand and four,
the Tigers selected Justin Verlander. Then they would turn around three years later and draft Rick Porcello. That's on this date, June seventh, back in those days, right, Greg camp He's got a really good story. He's been a really good coach for a long time, and he just signed a contract
extension deservedly. So he's going to join us and we're going to talk about that, the push toward the push in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, and we're going to talk a little bit about college coaches and the transition to the NBA. His thoughts on that and more coming up with Greg Campy,
the head coach of Oakland University Basketball on Axis and Bros. And he gets a contract extension and deservedly so. He joins us here on exus and
Bros. Coach, Hope you and your family are well. Congratulations you are the longest tenured coach. You've done it for forty years. Why do you keep doing it? That's another question, Matt, especially you know, in this day and age with you know, the way things are changing so much, and most of the people in my generation, you know, are moving on to do something else. And it's funny, is ocause when I talk
to. So I think we start every conversation with why we're still doing this, you know, And the truth of the matter is, man, I don't know what else I would do. I'm going I love it. It's still no matter how it changes, no matter you know, you hear of doomsday coming and all that kind of stuff. I still get to be around eighteen to twenty two year old young men, you know, every day and having a part of their lives and being able to help shape their lives.
Whether they're only with me for a year and now or they're with me for four it's still something that I kind of enjoy and revel in. Yeah, but you could retire. Are you one of those guys who just can't sit still and you need to do something? Or is it just because of the intoxication you get from coaching basketball and make a difference in young people's lives, both on the floor and off it. I like that word intoxicating it because it's probably what it is. Yeah, you know, it's yeah, I
don't know what else I would do, really, Man. I play golf. I play a lot of golf, but a lot of that is because it's like playing hockey, you know, if I get out there and play around the golf, I enjoy it because I know maybe I shouldn't even be out here. And you know, if I could play every day and not have to worry about anything, I'm not sure I would enjoy it as much.
So and then you know, there's competition has been in you know, my whole life has been competition growing up as a kid, as a player, and then I got into coaching right away, and you know, I'm a very competitive person, and I think I would really miss that, you know, I really do. And I'm sure there will be a day that I walk in and say, Okay, I've had enough. But right now I don't see that day anywhere near so Kaki Cousins or the Sharf, because
both are fantastic. There at your school, Yeah, there are very few golf courses or very few institutions at college institutions in this country that have two golf courses. And there are value that have Yeah they have one good one let alone too. So I'm a I'm an old school guy though I like yeah better, you know, I just I think it's a better test of boff I. There's nothing wrong with either. I mean, they're both top twenty thirty golf courses in the state of Michigan. So it's kind of cool
that we have them on our campus. And yeah, but I like Khaki the best. I asked this the other day of somebody of Jim Leland when he was on our show, and I said, who's the ideal for them? If you could have any foursome your three other golfers obviously to play with, whether they're alive or dead, and whether they're good golfers or not, who would be in that force theme for you? Oh? Wow, jeez? If that would depend on are we playing for money? Are we just
playing for fun? No, you're playing for the enjoyment of life. Oh okay, because if we were playing for money, I'd want guys with a lot of money that were going to get me a lot of right, guys who can hit from the whites. Yeah, yeah, you guys go all
the way to the back and let me come up here. Right. So well, I mean, I'm a religious guy, so obviously if Jesus Christ was alive, that would be that would be number one of all time, you know, to have an opportunity to do that, that would that would be I think if I could get him and just be me and him. I wouldn't want to share him with anybody else. Well that's a great answer.
Yeah, that's a great answer. And you know what the only thing is, you know, you wonder if if he would give you the three foot gimmes, you know that's good, you'd probably make you put it in a great camping joiners here on exues and bros. What's the biggest challenge you faced today as a head coach compared to maybe not when you first started, but even just twenty years ago. What's the biggest challenge in how do you deal with it? Well? I think social media is obviously, you know,
far and away. Social media has changed the world. You know, it's just not changed. It's just not changed sports or athletics or college basketball football. It's changed the world. The amount of disinformation, the amount of people that feel free to say whatever they want to say, the way that our youth and the way people believe what's on there, and how we our youth really strives for likes and follows. And now why wouldn't they because you're
they're being compensated. The more people they can get to follow them, the more you know, they can be compensated for that. There's all these influencers out there, and I think that's the biggest, biggest challenge. You know, we talk a lot within our team to you know, keep the outside noise out, you know, that type of stuff, but it's almost impossible to do today. And it's not just college kids. I mean that's what
pros do. As soon as they get back to their life, They're on their phones to see what's going on and what's being said about them, which is really unfortunate. You win the Horizon League regular season title a year ago and the tournament title a year ago. I've said this for a long time. I don't think mid major programs get the opportunity enough to get enough teams in for you to have the resume you had and win the regular season and
then have to do it again in the tournament is borderline unfair. What do you think should change for mid major teams to have I don't even want an equal play necessarily a level playing field, but a better opportunity to showcase more of the thrilling moments we get, like when your team beat Kentucky. Yeah, that's an age old question, and what I tell people and I think
it surprises them. Is our conference tournament is? Is? It is the I don't ever want to see that goal away because at the mid major level, the only other times you're going to cut nets down is if you go to the final four, and then again if you win the championship, you know, you don't cut next we beat Kentucky, we didn't cut the nets down. You know, we almost beat NC State, we lost in the you know and overtime. And even if we'd won that game, we're going
to the sweet sixteen. We don't cut the nets down. And so every conference tournament ends with you know, the confetti flying, the team cutting nets down, the you know, you've accomplished something so hard that I would hate to see that go away, and our players lose that because the chances of them cutting the nets down at the national championship game aren't probably that that good. Yeah, it's hard. I mean, of the thirty leagues last year,
twenty one of the thirty champions got beat in their conference tournament. And then, you know, I say this a lot. I don't think people really understand what I'm say. I think they're trying to They look at me as making an excuse or something like that. But you know, Michigan State's got a string of twenty eight or nine straight years going to the nc Tournament
something like that. Correct. Yeah, And in the last twenty years, since two thousand and five, the only way that Oakland can get to the NCAA Tournament is to win our conference tournament, right, we just talked about that. So we've won it four times in the last twenty years, the conference tournament. How many times you think Michigan State has won the Big Ten conference tournament nos twenty years? The number four? I was going to say three, but yeah, okay, yeah, Michigan has won at three.
I think Western Michigan's won at once, Detroit's won at once. Eastern Michigan I don't think has won it in the last twenty years. Central Michigan maybe, No, I don't think they have either. So that's how hard it is to win that conference tournament. And that's how hard it is for a mid major to get to the NCAY tournament. But the Power fives, obviously, Mission State's gone twenty eight years in a row. And I'm not belittling
that it in any way, shape or form. I'm just I'm just giving honest information out there, so when we have this conversation, we realize how hard it is. But it's also really hard to win the regular season is my point, and it's been my points for a long time. I'm not taking anything away from Power five conferences either. And look, I'm a MAC guy, I'm a mid major guy, so there might be some bias.
But when you put together and you're as a coach, you're telling you guys, look, every game matters, we want to be the one seed, so on and so forth, and then you slip up one game compared to the entire regular season. I think that is short changing a mid major team. I don't have the answer, so I don't want to be a hypocrite
here. I don't necessarily have the answer. I just think it's a really tough challenge for these teams, and I think there has to be a different way of looking at possibly getting them in even if they happen to stub their toe in a mid major tournament championship game. I noticed the whole talk about Danny Hurley going from Yukon to possibly the Lakers. He's interviewing with the Lakers today. Eleven coaches over the last thirty years coach Campy have jumped from the
collegiate game to the professional level. The winning percentage combined is forty five percent. Two men, Billy Donovan and Brad Stevens are the only ones to have winning records. What do you think is the biggest issue for college coaches to try and adapt to the NBA game. I don't think it's the coaching part
of it, man, I really don't. I think some of it is probably you know, when you're in college at eighteen to twenty two year old and you're trying to turn them from you know, not children but young adults into men, and when you get to college at the pro level, you've already got men there, I think, so that's part of it. But the biggest thing is roster construction. And in college, I construct my roster.
If I took an NBA, I'm not constructing your roster. They have general managers and presidents and directors of operations and all these people are making millions of dollars and that's their job to figure out contracts and come up with the roster. So part of college coaching is being obviously having a good roster. So then the second thing on that I think is that most pro coaches take
over and that's why it's open. They take over a bad situation, and it's a lot easier to fix a bad situation at the college level than it is the NBA level through the draft or through however, you know, trades or however it's being done at the NBA level, And at college you have say, you know, now, did John Calipari when he went to the next that he have total say? I don't know. I would guess he didn't. But John Calipark can coach now. And so it's it's more situational
than it is coaching, the actual coaching of it. But I do think there is you know, you're not in the college level, Dan Hurley is king of you con right now. All the roster decisions are made by him. If he says jump, everybody in that building says how high it's. You know, all the players if they just want to be there, if
they're being paid enough, they just want to be there. So, uh, you know, it's a whole different situation when he goes to the Lakers and he's going to have players that you know, believe they should have a say and everything. You've got an owner, You've got so I think it all has to do with that more than it has to do with the exos oh's of coaching. I agree on how to persent with it. What do you like most about your situation at Oakland Speaking? You have King of Campus.
What do you like most about your situation there? Well, when you've been at a place as long as I've been, you know, everybody right, and now there's turnover and everything. But you know, you walk into a building and a guy that's sweeping the floor comes over and you have a conversation with him. You know, he's got a son named so and so. You know you you know, and it's a we've got twenty thousand students, but it's a small town atmosphere. You know, I'm a small town
guy. I grew up in Defiance, Ohio. That's how my life always was. And uh so it just really has fit me. Well. You know, I've got I got a group of friends that you know, I got, I've got you know, a golf course is to play, I've got you know, those are the things that I have. A here's a better way to put it. I have a great quality of life. And in this business, and you've been around this business, you know, the quality of life for the pressure of college coaching at the level, you know,
the highest levels, it really affects your quality of life. You know, there's so many you know, pitfalls, There's so many people you have to please, There's so many things that have to be done that you know, the stress and the pressure of it can really get to coaches and you see them get out and you see a lot of coaches get fired because of that kind of stuff. So I've been lucky, you know. I I love what I do. I have an unbelievable situation that I live in and
I've never you know, there's a song out there. The lyrics was, you know, it's not wanting what you it's not getting what you want, it's wanting what you've got. And I think that I've been somebody that's just wanted what I have. I've had chances to go elsewhere, right plenty over your forty years. Why did you ever learn it? Because it was never it was never life changing money. You know, I'm saying it wasn't Michigan at three million a year or five million a year or whatever it is,
or it makes four million. You know, it wasn't a Michigan or a Michigan state. It wasn't a you know, obviously those are you know that in this where we live, those are the two jobs to the best, you know, ten jobs in the country. It wasn't those places. It wasn't a Kentucky or you know, a Power five that you could go to the national championship in. And I didn't want to chase that. I never wanted to chase it. I didn't want to take I wasn't willing to take
the next step like a Missouri Valley or you know. I've been offered, you know, a handful of jobs like that over the years, and when I looked at them, it just wasn't worth to chase. And you know, probably that's why I've not gotten you know, the Tennessee that, you know, we go to Tennessee and we beat them. Yeah, they're at seventh in the country. We beat them, and the coach leaves, and you know, I make a phone call there and they say, yeah,
yeah, wow, you're a great coach. But you know, it's just not what we want right now. So okay, you know that's fine. I'm lucky. I got what, I got a good perspective last thing before I let you go. It's been enjoyable. I always enjoy it with you. How much can you use last year's success toward building quote unquote momentum for next year or this coming season? And afterwards we're hot? I mean that ended and I've had more speaking engagements, more you know, interviews, more
taking more pictures with people came here. I tried at the draft. You know, of course, there were seven hundred thousand people there and they're all they're all sports, you know, related people, So it's not like a regular walk to the park where somebody has no idea about basketball. Right. It took me over two hours to walk from I was. I did something at the Caucus Club on one side of town, and I had to walk
to the Detroit Athletic Club, which is about a ten minute walk. It took me over two hours to get there, just because of the amount of pictures I had to take with people. So we're a hot commodity right now, and we want to keep that going. We want to build on it. We want to get to a Sweet sixteen next year. We want to get to a Final four. That's our goal. And that's what we're trying
to do. But the reality of it is, you know, every white six foot five shooter in the country's calling us and want to come here because they think they can be Jack goldkid shoot three hundred threes. Right. So when they call, and some of them are really really good, I mean, they're guys that could do what Goki did. But when they find out that we don't have one hundred and fifty thousand dollars or two hundred thousand what
they're asking for to come, that conversation ends. They're more stood in the money than the opportunity. You know, Jack Golkie, no one knew who he was. When the Kentucky game tipped off. He had four hundred followers on Instagram, when five hours after the Kentucky game he had sixty five thousand followers on Instagram. He's made a ton of money because what he did. I can't convince these people to make it that way. They want it up
front, they want I'm the outcome for one hundred and thousands. Well, they've got to consider you because you're such a great coach, You're a great person. I've always appreciated our conversations and our friendships. I hope you and I can play golf sometimes. In the meantime, enjoy your summer. You've earned a coach. Thanks for the time today.
