Give me a call eight forty eight forty three. Anything that's on your mind in the world of sports, we bring it to you. We'll talk about it. Sports Radio is the text that you want to send to twenty one thousand, twenty one thousand, send Sports Radio and then you can jump in the conversation. Next week we will be at

our friends Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, the Getaway Reimagine. We'll be up there for a Thursday night draft party and then a Friday morning show while our friend Bill Simonson and The Huge Show broadcast live on on Thursday Draft Day from the Caucus Club in downtown Detroit. Tiger is a loser yesterday at Texas. That means the Rangers one three out of four. Detroit's in Minnesota for a

weekend series tonight. Kent to my Eta is Again, as I said in the six o'clock hour, I try really hard not to be two to judge, because it can be such an emotional roller coaster, especially in baseball, when your team is good one day or one series and down the next. It can come crashing down to a halt. But Kent and Maada lasted two and two thirds, allowed seven Hicks, six runs, five of them earned. He allowed not one, not two, but three home runs. Now

you got Matt Manning who had a really good spring. I know, I know it's just spring training. Chip, I know, I'm just using it as an example. This is why you try and build depth. It's not like Maeta has any minor league options, so you sign him to a free agent contract and he comes in. It's not like he was great a year ago. But he has struggled mightily. He has a seven point six four er through four starts. I mean right out of the shoot. It's a

fastball that doesn't reach ninety miles an hour. And Marcus Simeonsa see you and Homeward Kentomaieta has thrown seventeen and two thirds innings so far in four starts. That's not good when you're averaging about four innings per start. But anyway, he has allowed in those seventeen and two thirds innings seven bombs. No, that's not good enough. That's not going to work. This team, even

though they scored seven runs yesterday, had double digit hits. This team is not good enough to overcome defensive mistakes and that type of consistently bad pitching as simple as that. Not a whole lot more needs to be said about this team, just the way it works. Can't do it. Also, last night, the NHL wrapped up the regular season. The Kings were winners the

Knight's losers, So that means Edmonton Conor McDavid drive title. Hymen, those guys, They're going to take on the Kings for the third straight year. Edmonton has won the previous two. The Kings get third place in the Pacific with ninety nine points, Vegas ninety eight points, number two wild card. They opened with Dallas. I saw this on social media yesterday, didn't quite get to it in our program on X's and Bros. On Thursday. The

White Sox two days ago had a doubleheader against Chicago. Somebody sent a video of the ballpark. A lot of that depends on when the person was taking the video, but it looked like there was nobody there, and the comment was literally maybe maybe a thousand people there. That was the person who took the video, not me, So it made me go, hmm, I

wonder if that's actually true. I look up the box score, which can be very misleading, by the way, because they go by tickets sold right, not by attendance, not who's at the game, but how many tickets they sold. Still, in that double header, they sold only ten, four hundred and twelve tickets. That's brutal. That's tough to stay alive. If you're a baseball team, phone numbers eight sixty six, eight three, eight forty eight forty three. You can text US Sports Radio to twenty one

thousand and jump in on the conversation. I do want to get to the Lions' new uniforms. We'll do that. That's seven twenty. But I wanted to know if any of you watched the Matthew Stafford documentary playing in Detroit in the playoffs yesterday on NFL Network. I watched it. I thought it was pretty good. I also understand it was produced by the Rams, so it can be you know, it's leading you in an area to where they want to lead you to. It's borderline propaganda. But I did enjoy it.

I always like the things that you can't always get, the inside stuff miked up and so on and so forth. Let's go to the phone lines, Ben, who do we got with us? You got Danny and Brighton? Oh great, hey Danny, how are you shove? My friend? Good

morning, my friend? Always a pleasure if you know't mat. I kind of want to back up to the you were talking about the Tigers to the last couple of games, and I was thinking, I was thinking to myself the same thing about Kent and Maida that you know that could be one of Scott Harris's wish because you can't send him down, so even if you do

put him on the shelf, he's still on the roster. You can't, like you bring Ulet's say, you bring up Matt Manning to take a spot in the rotation, somebody else has to go down besides Maida, which is that's a tough that's tough. And Chris mccosky's talking about this early on that he didn't have a bad spring, but all of a sudden his fastball was eighty eight eighty nine and that's where it is right now, and that's problematic. I don't know, I don't know what to do about that. Well,

here's what happens, Danny. You can't send him down. But he can get injured, wink wink. He can have shoulder sorts, he can have a lower back problem. You know that that that blister on the fingershut. That's a real tough thing. Along with absolutely yeah, I mean you've got you got some del Toy problems. You know, you got a calf muscle situation. You can go on the tendail. There are ways around it, for sure. Look, I don't I get in the whole spring,

and I just brought it up with Matt Manning. I don't know what your thoughts are on it. I'm more apt to measure what he did a year ago than I would be in the spring six and eighty year ago. Give up almost a home run per game. I don't think he had a terrible year from Minnesota. He was injured a little bit, but he wasn't great. No, I didn't come around though like the last you know, six weeks two months of the season where he pitched better coming off, because I

think he came off Tommy John didn't he. Yeah, he missed the entire twenty twenty two campaign. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the thing about Matt Manning is and the reason why he didn't make the team is he gave up the home run ball and still does and that's you know, that's problematic. Yeah, it is. And thanks for the phone call, Danny. I appreciate it very much. We're up against a break. Yeah, he gave up the home runball. You're right, Kent. Tomaid has given up

seven homers in seventeen two thirds innings. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't. I suppose we'll get into the football aspect of it. Matthew Stafford and that documentary. Also, the Lion's new uniforms are the alternate uniforms. I've got an issue. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. X'es and bros. As we continue on the other side across the great state

Lines Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. We welcome your feedback on anything that might be on your mind in the world of sports on this Friday doesn't have to be. But what we're talking about, Although I do want to dive into the documentary, it's a Rams documentary, is what it was, with Matthew Stafford and his trip back to Detroit for the playoff game won by the Lions a year ago. Lions are the better team, no doubt about that.

Matthew Stafford was very good. He was excellent in that game. Whether you like him or not, it's hard to deny. You throw three hundred and sixty seven yards a couple of touchdowns give you a team a chance to win when the other team is clearly superior. It's pretty impressive. Remember this is a guy who was three and five after sidelined against Dallas he injured his

thumb. The Rams are three and six heading into the by They closed out, winning every game but one the rest of the way, losing to the Ravens in overtime. In overtime on that punt return, he was in the

conversation. I believe for some despite missing a lot of times for MVP, because of how important he was to them and how good he was for the Rams, if you can separate your emotions for a moment, if you don't like him, or even if you do like him, for what he did here in Detroit, if you can try to separate that and just base it off what you truly believe is important for a team, what you would consider some of the more important statistics, and if sometimes we get too caught up

in numbers, which is absolutely true, if you could separate that and just recognize the importance of a certain player on a certain team, because he missed two games and yet he threw for four thousand yards, completed sixty two and a half percent of his passes, but got his team into the postseason, gave them a chance. The documentary was pretty good. I wasn't blown away by it. He was hurt during the game against the Lions. He hit

his thumb on Alee McNeil's helmet. I believe he got drilled in the ribs. Had to have some attention to that. Then came out of the blue tent and returned. Wasn't enough. They had him miked up, obviously, They had his wife miked up. His daughters could be heard. I don't think they were wearing microphones, but you could hear what they had to say. It showed the personality of him. It showed the toughness that I think we all have grown accustomed to. It's you know, in a lot of

these documentaries. I don't know if you watched the one where they had the on the NFL network with the four quarterbacks, Mahomes. Who else was part of that Ben I don't know if you saw it, Oh man, it was Patrick Mahomes. It was three others. Anyway, it's great getting to know them, and it's great getting to see the the part you don't always see, the behind the scenes stuff, the relationships they may have with their children. For Mahomes, it was in the middle of building a home.

It's his wife. His wife was It was two much to take. At least for me, it was like, Okay, that's enough, I'm done. And I think with Stafford how they edited with his wife in there. It gets it gets a little, it gets a little much. I remember, I remember the Marcus Mariotta was another one of those quarterbacks. By the way, besides of the Mahomes, there were four quarterbacks, but I remember

the Mahomes that that part of that quarterback documentary. I don't know if you ever saw that, ben h I'm trying to remember the name of it was. I'm looking up right now. Yeah, Mahomes. They had Mahomes' wife miked up during games when he won the MVP, and it's just it's kind of cringe worthy stuff, you know. It's there's no way you can can see that final product and go, yeah, just put you in a good

light. Sometimes less is more. It's like, oh man, please stop talking a the voice and be just some of the stuff you're saying, some of the stuff like he wins the MVP, and and her response is, baby, do you know what you just did? Yeah? Thanks, I do. I do know what I just did. I appreciate it, though, honey. And so there were parts of that with you know, Kelly Stafford. They got you to go, h okay, well, please come out of the blue ten. Please come out of the blue ten. Please

come out of the blue ten. And then at the end his goal and I want to get I want to wed a gold jacket. In other words, I want to be in the Hall of Fame, and I know what I have to do to get there. I want to I want to win another super Bowl, maybe another two, And she looks at him and she says, at least one more, Like it's a game of checkers, I'm just gonna beat you one more time. Those are the things that kind of

in these documentaries. I just wish the people would take a longer look at it in post or while it's taking place, while you're editing it and putting it together, you're recognizing this might not necessarily come off that well. How about more of him, more of the athletes, more of the coaches, and less of her. It's not hard knocks hard knocks. You get all

the team stuff. That's great, we all love that. And then they'll peel off and they'll do a certain visit with a certain player with his family, perhaps if it's a really good story. But something like this, and I get it's about Stafford and his family's important. Absolutely gives you a chance to show what kind of father he is. That's beautiful. But some of this stuff is just like, ah, you know, it's all about television and sports especially it's all about emotion. I have a boss who tells me

the job is to bring the game to the fan, that emotion. We're part of that where the extension of the emotion. Okay, great, her emotion is just like okay, loved when he's miked up and he's says, oh my ribs, my ribs are killing me. Oh my god, my thumb, I can't feel my thumb. You got a huge injury on his hand. That's all good stuff, but sometimes it can be a little bit too much when you're bringing certain spouses into a documentary. Our phone number is

eight sixty six. That's just my opinion. Eight three, eight forty eight forty three. When we come back, I do want to dive into the Lion's alternate uniforms. A friend of mine was on soul social media say, if you don't like them, you're a nerd. I'm a nerd, I guess because I don't Exes and Bros. Who do we got on the line for us this morning? Oh? We got some texts? Oh some texting? Yeah, yeah, says good morning, Shep. If you don't mind me asking, what do you make of Calvin Johnson his Hall of Fame speech. He trashed the Lions when they had the right to keep his salary. Then

Lions make it right and it's all good now. Seems odd to me? Yeah, Look, relationships, friendships can be complicated. At times a million dollars, that's a lot of money for you and me. To a team in the NFL, probably not so much like it or not like it or not. The Lions are viewed, or have been in the past, have been viewed as very cost efficient, very cost efficient. Dare I say cheap?

I think people felt like Calvin Johnson deserved the money and that the NFL or the Lions specifically because of past relationship problems, specifically with Barry Sanders, needed to fix that. And this just goes This was just another example, another example of why the Lions don't win because look at how they treat their athletes. I think that was the consensus. I'm not saying it's right. I just think that's what the consensus was. If you go around to the

great organizations, how are their players remembered? Are the relationships strained? Now remind ourselves we're not around those those franchises. Green Bay does a wonderful job of bringing out certain players for every home game, almost like an honorary captain. Minnesota has a guy who blows that Viking horn. A lot of players, a lot of players and coaches are honored on a regular basis. I've always felt like Detroit teams need to do more of that. I said that

about the Tigers. You go to Boston, they bring out a specific Red Sox player once a series. We were there last year and Wade Boggs was honored. I met Louis Tiant and took a picture with him. He was a great dude. Okay, it's getting up there in age. You don't know who Louis Tiant is. I get it. I was back in the seventies. Go back and look at it. It's all over YouTube. You can find him. There's a relationship there. There's a feeling of I'm still

this sure. Wade Boggs went and played for Tampa, played in New York, but he's a Red Sox player. I think that's what Detroit players and fans especially want. They don't want to see the greatest player in their franchise's history. Barry Sanders have some type of open feud with the organization. It makes the player, it makes the franchise, and it makes the city,

the market look bad. There's plenty of bad blooded times. Joe Montana was let go by the San Francisco forty nine ers and then played in Kansas City. Jimmy Johnson, at the end of his tenure in Dallas didn't have a great relationship with Jerry Jones. They came back and put his name in the Ring of Honor. These things are bound to happen. Ben Roethlisberger had an open feud with Terry Bradshaw. To legendary players with a legendary franchise, I'm

not saying every other organization does it the right way. I'm just saying for us in this market, when you see the greatest player your franchise has ever had, some could argue the greatest running back and or player the league has ever had. Of course, if we use our criteria that you have to be a winner, then Barry Sanders doesn't fit that category. But that's conveniently left out when we use him as an example because we're in Detroit and we

love him. My point, and he's the best running back I've ever seen. But the point is, you want everything to go according to plan. You want the player to be happy, you want the franchise, you want them to be a connection, a long term standing relationship. Played his entire career as a Lion. We want him to remain a Lion. That's how we felt about Calvin Johnson. What's a million dollars to get in the way of an organization that brings in billions of dollars. Millions of dollars, the

league brings in billions. How could it hurt? Look? Million bucks is million bucks? Did the franchise have every right to withhold it? Absolutely? The question you have to ask yourself was was it worth it? There's only one thing you have to know, or witness or hear for you to recognize whether it was worth it or not, and that is when he was introduced at Ford Field. Some brilliant with the Lions suggested that Martha Ford introduce him

or Sheila rather excuse me, that Sheila introduced him. Bad idea booed lustlessly for it. That tells you who the fans are on the side of. And it's easy for the fans to take that side. Why, huh, I don't know. The team has never won. The reputation is what it is. You know that, right, You know what the before until last year. You know what the reputation is of the Detroit Lions. And it's justified when you're one of just a handful of teams who've never reached a Super

Bowl. Yes, it is justified. And when you do that when you pit that against a player who has given his all. Was a six time Pro bowler, was a three time All Pro, is a franchise leader in numerous categories, set the old time record for number of receptions in twenty twelve, went well over one thousand yards in each of his what last eight years six years, led the league in yards per game twice, and was a primary reason you wanted to watch the team or at ten games, or get

this team some national exposure. Who do you think people are going to side with? That's what oftentimes franchises don't heed. I don't know if they're in a conference room going all right, look it, we've got a problem here. What we decide on whether or not we should give Calvin Johnson the million dollars that is owed to him. What is the worst case scenario? Any ideas? Yes, in the back, Yeah, if we don't give it to him, we need to remind ourselves of our perception fair or unfair in

this city. We don't win, really didn't win with him. We've had a strained relationship with Barry Sanders. You could take it all the way back, even before there was a Super Bowl. We had a problem with Bobby Lane, but let's keep it to the present or close to. We've had a strained relationship with Barry Sanders that we're trying to repair, and we're doing a good job of that right now. However, how are we viewed by the fan base? What's it gonna hurt? We're not asking Cam Sutton to

forgive us and give him the million dollars. It's Calvin flipping Johnson. Is it worth that battle? Most people around that conference table it motions aside, would argue, it's not worth the battle. Let's just give him the money. He's not holding you hostage. Guy gave it everything he could in his career from age twenty two through thirty for your organization. You didn't like the way he retired. We didn't like the way Barry Sanders retired to either.

Folks. Okay, it's a million bucks. It's not a Miguel Cabrera thirty two million dollar page. It's just my guess. Now they're working toward and they have for the most part kind of mended that fence. And yeah, I mean the speech, but hey, I gotta tell you, you might be upset about that. And I could to a certain extent. Understand why you've probably said the same stuff about the organization, only worse to your buddies.

You guys are sitting around Sunday in front of your big screen TV, having a beer in pizza and they lose again, And what are you saying. You're saying the same damn thing. End of season, it's late December, the Lions aren't in the playoffs. You're saying the same damn thing. But when a player says it, who's experienced it, who's had to live through it for ten years, you're pissed off. That makes no sense to me none. Why is it okay for us? I mean, it's such

a it can be said. Look, and it's not just fans, by the way, I mean, it's it's members of the media too. You've got to act more professional. Oh and then you'll jump behind a microphone or jump on TV, lose your proverbii O you know what, and go absolutely nuts to get a viral moment. Hypocrite. That's a joke. Man player gets upset. He's involved in the emotion. He or she is involved in the emotion of the game. They're the one who is put in the work.

They're the one who's watched the film. They're the ones who've had to do the ice tub. They've had to get taped, they have to get numbed, They've had to do all this stuff to get ready for a game, and they come so close and lose. They have an emotional moment and you're gonna go, huh, give me a break. You gotta be more professional than that. Well, the only workout you did all week long was have a turkey and cheese sandwich. Come on, let's be careful. I

think they have a right to be emotional about that. Now. Is there a line that can be crossed? Absolutely, the Calvin Johnson stuff, I think it all stems from emotion. You want to be viewed as a team that treats it's athletes current and passed right. I think the Lions have turned the corner on that, and I gotta give Sheila all the credit in the world for recognizing it. If indeed they have turned that corner, they sure seem like they have. And it's not just because the winning. It's because

the people they are bringing in and the message that they're preaching. Stories we could tell, stories I could tell would blow your mind, But those people are gone. Now they've got new people in. They're professional and they get it. That's a great sign and an interesting text. Seeah, that's why I love this. I love that text. Way to go, man. I mean, you get us on a topic, you get us into something that we really enjoy and we are passionate about and we can discuss. I

mean this sincerely, thank you for that. It's a really good text. I mean, that's not something that would have crossed my mind. That's not something that you know, had written down on our logsheet or Ben thought of overnight. You brought it up. It's a job well done. What's another text? Ben says, I love the clean look of the blues and whites with the new uniforms. But the black uniforms I don't think many will like them as much as they do now. Once worn on the field during a

game, they look ufl ish in my opinion. And lastly, can rod Wood be more like Spielman stay out of the spotlight? Yeah? Exactly, Yeah, Chris s. Pielman is Thank goodness, so much is made of what she has done. And Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, and rightfully so, by the way, they all deserve their accolades. They have done a up to this point, they've done a brilliant job. A ton of credit for all of them. Chris Pielman doesn't get nearly enough credit, and he

doesn't want it. He's fantastic. Rod Wood is the president of the team. Yeah, I think if I want to talk football, I want to talk to Brad Holmes, Chris Bielman or Dan Campbell. You want to talk about Ford field upgrades and televisions upgrades and Wi Fi upgrades and seating ticket prices events. Okay, go ahead and talk to Rod Wood? Everything else? Nope, nope, football, No, No, it's not where I'm going. But earlier, I'm sorry I missed the what was the first part of

that? That text again? They love the clean look all yeah, thank you, so do I and a friend of mine on social media through it out. If you don't like these new uniforms, you're a nerd. Consider me a nerd. Can't can't stand them, quite honestly. They look as close to the Carroll line of Panthers as possible. That's number one. Doesn't look like the Detroit Lions. To me, it looks like Carolina. I get all this stuff that happens at the collegiate level with Oregon and all these

different teams, all these different schools. They want to do it for kids. I hope is that's not what it takes for NFL players. Take it all fired up. Hey man, look at this new uniform. That's great. It shouldn't matter if you're playing in pajamas. But I believe Look, I said this about the Piston's uniforms in the past two I'm a traditionalist, and you can complain that I haven't evolved enough, and I'll accept that that's fine, But I think there are certain things that should not be touched.

I don't think you need an alternate uniform for something that already looks books really good. Don't feed me bull crap that it's about on field. This is all about marketing. We all know that this is all about selling jerseys. This has nothing to do with football or playing the game. Our phone numbers eight sixty six, eight three, eight forty eight forty three.
