Hello and welcome to the WTF1 podcast. I'm your host, James Coker, along with Ash Vandele. Today, we are going to be previewing the Spanish Grand Prix, which... This year's birth name is, or name on its passport, is the Formula One Aramco Gran Premio de España 2025. Before we get into our Gran preview... You can't tell my pun right now because it's saying preview as in PRAX view. But regardless, before we get into our grand preview, let's talk some motorsport headlines. First up.
Flavio Briatore has said that Alpine wants to be title contenders in 2027. Me too. Next story. Yeah. And I want to win the lottery. Like whatever, dude. Great. Like, why wouldn't you want to be a title contender? Like, sure. All right. Good luck. I just want to dick around and pee 10 with my team. That would be so funny. Flavrio Briatore. I would prefer to dick around and pee last in the standings.
All right. Moving on, coming in this weekend, our flexi-wing technical directive for this weekend, as mentioned per last episode. We as we know, after the first race of the season, they immediately implemented restrictions on the flexi wing for the rear wing. But the front wing takes longer to. a tweak in manufacturers so the new regulations for the front wing will be implemented this weekend at barcelona
Don't expect any big performance or grid changes. Next up, Formula One teams are to conduct tests with steel skid blocks at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix as the FIA pushes on its idea to avoid grass fires.
Yeah, what a fun fact. I've heard no one say anywhere. Yeah, if we remember at the Japanese Grand Prix, the sparks were thrown from the titanium skid blocks that are under the car, and they ignited the grass. There were some grass fires. So the FIA believes that moving to Steele will address this. problem if the tests are successful we could see steel blocks
for Canada, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Netherlands, Italy, U.S., Mexico, and Brazil, and titanium for Azerbaijan, Singapore, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. So are they trying to reduce the sparks that come out? Yeah, well... I guess by the material, yeah, titanium and steel will just naturally reduce, but it's the type of sparks. They'll say it just gets shaved off when it's steel as opposed to the show that we see for titanium. I don't know. I love the sparks.
Sure, but we don't want anything on fire either. I'm no race engineer, but when things are on fire, I think it's pretty bad. You're right. You're absolutely right. Before we get back to our next story, I also want to talk about the quote that Mohammed bin Salim recently made, complaining about how the FIA owns.
this formula one series and that they, he feels like they aren't compensated properly. He says something along the lines of the most popular driver and owner of one of the team makes more money. than we do and we own the series and he feels like the FIA isn't getting their fair share, which I felt like was, I don't know, a little laughable. I think he continues to say things that... continue to dig himself a deeper and deeper hole when it comes to public sentiment.
Yeah, the problem is we can't, I mean, we can call him out on it, obviously. But at the same time, we don't know the exact numbers, right? He's saying they don't get paid as much, but I don't know how much they get paid. They can say they get paid less. Maybe it's $100,000 less. Maybe it's a dollar less. Like, he could be right.
But in the very gray area of being correct, and the fact they're not more transparent or transparent at all, we don't know if he's right or wrong. So it's kind of like up in the air. I know everyone's been pointing out that the FAA is a non-for-profit, but they still have to. run programs and pay their employees so yeah if you need to you need to but I also understand that the FIA had gosh I swear there was an article like a year or two ago I will find this about their
the money that they've bought in and things like that. I will say a great counterpoint to the criticism of that about the FIA, that the FIA doesn't need any more money is that it would be great if there were stewards. who were paid full time to be stewards so that there was more consistency when it comes to, you know, you know, governing the sport. Yeah. That's a big one.
Unfortunately for all of us in our thoughts, according to documents seen by Racing News 365 and some others, you might have seen this around, a total of 37 figures from national motorsport clubs across the Americas have signed a letter to strongly encourage... including the country of Spain, which is Carlos Sainz OG-z.
will be Motorsports Motoring Club. Wow. Kind of rough. What does he have on that? What does he know? What do they know? What is going on? He just must know where the bodies are buried. Next up. three-time IndyCar champion and most recent Indy 500 winner and current championship leader in the NTT IndyCar series, Alex Pillow, has shut down any speculation on a move to Formula One.
Ash, do you think he would ever move to F1 if he was offered a seat, let's say, at Cadillac? Would he be offered a seat? Because the man can't keep a contract. That's why he's being sued. This is, like, I understand what he's saying, but at the same time, I'm like, Alex, I don't think anyone's going to offer you anything considering you're being sued for not keeping your previous contract. So, like, you know. Sure. If...
If he wanted to, I'm sure he would have. I'm sure everyone would take an opportunity to go to, if they had like, hey, do you want to come in? Try for whatever the contract is for Alpine does. Five races. If you do well, we'll continue you. Because it's always going to be a what if. You don't want to live with regret. in racing. You want to try a little bit of everything. You're like, dang, I'm so good here. Just won my first oval. Let's go.
I also assume that Alex Pillow is so dominant and so competitive, if he were to go to Formula One, he could immediately secure a ride back in IndyCar. And this is not me saying that's like, oh, of course everyone wants to race in Formula One. I think everyone wants to race everywhere. where if you're a good driver and you have the skill set and money to race, I'm sure Max or Sabin, I think we've talked about this.
Many of times, and this has been around the internet, that he would, he's obviously going to race in sports car racing. We saw the Nurburgring stuff that he was testing he was doing in the Ferrari. So I think if he wanted to try it out, and they're like, hey, we can give you a rally seat fully funded for a year. He'd be like, hell yeah.
You know, it's just like, why not? Let's go. I do think if Alex below is being 100 percent honest in the in these these comments, I do think it makes a lot of sense. You know, he is like. You know, he is the guy right now in IndyCar. And right now there's nothing stopping him. Like, why would you mess up a run in a situation that you have like this to go compete?
probably in the midfield and struggled to even get in the points. The quote was a little longer, I believe, and I'm paraphrasing. Of course, he says something along the lines of, it doesn't look like they have fun there. As in, not in racing, but with the team and the mechanics. He's like, I eat lunch with my mechanics. We hang out. We go to bars. We go do that stuff. He's like, I don't see any of the drivers doing that.
With their teams, et cetera. Yeah. And that was one of his other reasons that he's listed. We're just like, yeah, that's fine. I guess. But he's making, like you said, I think to build upon your point that. And I apologize. It was $3.6 million, not $3.8 million that he made over the IndyCar Indy 500 weekend. So, yeah, I think he's fine. I think he's doing well. Yeah. For sure. But we have a lot of motorsport this weekend. We have the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix.
formerly the Formula One Aramco Gran Premio de España 2025 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. We have the NTT IndyCar Series Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, which is a street circuit. Alex Pelosi continuing his dominance season fresh off of an Indy 500 win. Interesting part of the Detroit Grand Prix is the double sided pit lane, which is always fun to watch on TV.
And then we also have some other races going on in Detroit this weekend as well. Right, Ash? Yep. It's going to be the IMSA WeatherTech. I call it the sprint race because it's 100 minutes as opposed to, you know. six hours, 12 hours, 24 hours. So similar to Long Beach, if anyone remembers that weekend, we have GTP. It's currently 11 entries in GTD Pro only with also 11 entries.
We also have rounds 10 and 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in China, Shanghai, at the Shanghai International Circuit. Oliver Rowland of Nissan Formula E team has a very comfortable lead. the Drivers' Championship, while the race for the Team Championship is close between Nissan Formula E Team and Tagoya Porsche Formula E Team. And then we also have a NASCAR race this weekend as well, right?
Heck yeah. A Cracker Barrel 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Super Streetway. How do I explain what a Cracker Barrel is? To all our European listeners. It is a, it is a, how do I? It's like a southern restaurant. Yeah. Southern themed restaurant. Southern themed. Okay. Restaurant. I don't know. Mainly breakfast food, but also other stuff. But it's supposed to be like very southern.
if that makes sense. Like there's rocking chairs in the front. There's a store in the front with like knickknacks and stuff and aprons, you know, very live, laugh, love. Not in these conditions, but they really want you to. Every table has the peg game. OK, you're definitely not use those words without context. Get your mind out of the gutter, Ash. So there is a little wooden triangle that has little what look like golf tees and the plastic golf tees that they refer to as pegs.
And you essentially put one peg over another. And by doing that, you can remove one. And so it's like a puzzle. And you're trying to keep doing it until you only have one peg left in the triangle. And there's like different levels. So if you get down to one, you're like a genius. If you get down to two, you're pretty smart.
If you get three, you're just plain dumb. And if you get four more pegs left on the triangle, you're an egg new Ramos. How many Cracker Barrels have you been to? Too many. I love Cracker Barrel. The fact that you memorize that. Yeah, no, I love playing the peg game. The one at Cracker Barrel. We're not here to judge. We're not here to judge. We listen and we don't judge.
But let's get into our Spanish Grand Prix preview, also known as the Formula One Aramco Grand Premier de España 2025. Very few changes at this circuit. This year from last, with the exception of a guardrail on the right-hand side on the approach to Term 1, has been replaced with a concrete wall and debris fence. We're now going to do a part of the podcast known as Fun Facts.
which are fun facts that James takes from Lights Out blog and the Formula One website and reads. Some fun facts about the Spanish Grand Prix. It's been running at the Circuit de Barcelona, Catalunas in 1991. Yes, hand raised. James, what year were you born? 1984. That's right. James is older than the Spanish Grand Prix running at the Cirque de Barcelona, Catalonia. Thank you so much.
That is true. Here we go. It has 66 laps, a circuit length of 4.657 kilometers or 2.893 miles, 14 turns and two, count them, two. DRS zones in 2022 there were 50 overtakes in 2023 there were 65 overtakes and in 2024 there were 55 overtakes which is in my opinion better than the two overtakes give or take that happened at Monaco last week.
Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold the record for most wins here with six. The average win margin at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is 15.862 seconds. From the last 10 times the Spanish Grand Prix has been held here, the average win margin... is more around 12.5 seconds. For context, in 2023, Max Verstappen won by over 24 seconds. In 2024, he only won by 2.219 seconds. The lowest grid slot, a podium finish at this track has come from 12th.
place starting on the grid. Not surprisingly, the pole sitter at this track has gone on to win the Grand Prix 24 times. So at the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona, 24 wins from pole. 31 wins from the front row. Only three wins from third or further back. And the furthest back someone has won here is fifth place. with Fernando Alonso with a P5 starting grid position in 2013. Do you want to talk about the track, the circuit, or you want me to keep going, Ash?
Okay, keep going. She's like I'm sick. I want you to do all the talking. The circuit is known for its abrasive track service and high tire deg. It will most likely be a two stopper. It was a two stopper last year for most. For some cars last year, it was a three stopper. Pirelli is going to be bringing the hardest.
tires if you are if you guys are curious i highly recommend going to pirelli's website and looking at their barcelona pit stop breakdown they do this for every race But just they have a great chart showing you a breakdown of all of the pit stops of all the cars in finishing order. And it's just really fun. It shows you which compounds they brought. It shows you what compounds they started on, whether they were used or brand new. And it's just a very nice visual.
to get an idea of what everyone's tire strategy was over the course of the race. But let's get into storyline, shall we? We shall. Mercedes is dropping their upgraded rear suspension they bought to Imola.
From the race, the team had clearly hoped that the revisions would improve its mechanical and aero platform and delivery games in terms of tire management, but things did not work out like that. Russell and Antonelli had both been struggling to find consistency recently in the car's performance.
We remember in the beginning of the year they were pretty strong 2-2, but now not so much. So they're kind of reverting some of the upgrades they bought and hoping that helps. Charles Leclerc today was asked how much confidence he can take from the results of Monaco entering into this week. And he answered, not a lot. He said, not a lot. It was good in a difficult season like this. We do want to take as much positivity whenever it is possible. But they're not...
Still comfortable with the car and the upgrades they have bought. And Monaco is a hard track. It's just an outlier, I would say, performance of all these cars. So Barcelona will now be a real test, especially in the third sector, as we talk about McLaren. Can they keep up?
the high performance? And I think the answer is obviously yes, because it is McLaren. Norris himself said he wants a bigger sample set before being able to claim he's overcome these challenges from the first part of the season, even if his confidence is growing.
one lap at a time. With lots of talks about team orders and letting them race, we see it every week on some social media platform, and we see the comparisons to Senna and Pross. Piastri has actually said, we're both at McLaren for a very long time after this. And we want to fight for the championship every single year. I think we both understand it's pretty unwise to try and win one championship and bring the house down with it. We're never going to do anything that's unsportsmanlike.
or puts the team in a bad light, or puts ourselves in a bad light. I think that's just not who Lando and I are. Yeah, you know, I think it's interesting. We're still pretty early into the season. And I think for the most part, they've done a very good job to peacefully coexist, given how competitive they are with one another just in these first, you know, eight, nine rounds.
Let's talk about something that might be keeping you up at night. Cybersecurity. According to Vanta's latest state of trust report, it's the number one concern for UK businesses. That's where Vanta comes in. Whether you're a startup, growing fast or already established, Vanta can help you get ISO 27001 certified and more without the headaches.

Because when it comes to your business, it's not just about keeping the lights on. It's about keeping everything secure. On an LNER train. You can go on a big day out or you can just hang out. You can read a book or you can write one. You can BLT or you can G&T. You can zombie apocalypse or rom-com marathon. You can clear your inbox or think outside the box. But...
I do think long term, it would be beneficial for Lando Norris. It would be beneficial for McLaren to have Lando Norris win the driver's title this year. And I say that. Because I could see Landon Norris winning this year, Oscar Piastri finishing second place, and Oscar Piastri being fine with it, knowing that he's still very early in his career.
and then going on to win one or many more championships after this season. However, I do not know how Lando Norris would react to Oscar Piastri beating him in the Drivers' Championship this year. You make a very fair point. I would not think Piastri would be okay with coming in second fiddle. Sure. If he had the opportunities. And things that he has said, that his manager has said, so...
Mark Webber, that's for his manager to make that very clear. We also don't know how they're going to respond. I'm not thinking the cars are... We just don't know how 2026 regulations are going to play out. If you are good now and have the car and you guys are making it P1, P2 pretty frequently and you can qualify on pole, you take the win where you can get it. Yeah. I understand what Piastri is saying.
I just, I think when it comes down to it, either Piastri's playing it very cool that he knows he's going to be Lando Norris or he's not concerned about it. I don't know. It's just, I understand they're never going to crush each other. Can we even say that with confidence? That they wouldn't do that? No. PR answer? I still think the ceiling is so incredibly high for Oscar Piaget, and we're only scratching the surface of what his potential is.
in in formula one i do i in like what do i know i'm just like uh like a fan i don't have a ton of wheel knowledge but it feels like You look at where Landon Norris is in his career. I feel like this season is his season to win the Drivers' Championship. And... If he is not able to capitalize on this momentum, is not able to capitalize on how competitive the McLaren car is, especially since we have the new regulations coming in 2026 and we really don't know where all the teams are along.
with that sort of arms race like this is Lando's year to win this to win this title. I do think Oscar Piastri will have many opportunities to win a Formula One World Drivers Championship. Yeah, but that's never guaranteed. You just want to win the one now. Yeah, no, I know. And I know he's being like a team player, but at the same time, if it comes out in Barcelona, if it comes down to it, if one's P2, one's P1.
Zach said they'll let them, right? How much do I believe that? Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. I'll believe it when they take each other out of a race and they go. And then Zach Brown and Andrea Stella will be like, well, we said they could race. Right, with no emotion, just like, oh, it is what it is. That's what you guys get as opposed to working together. We still have a 150-point lead in the constructor standings. We're fine at least this week.
The final sector of the track does reward when the McLarens are particularly strong, which is their rear tire management. Some people have been talking about how the Red Bull, if this track is especially hot. This weekend, we might see Max Versappen and Yuki Tsunoda struggle. Overall, there's a much more front-limiting circuit that Alaino says he doesn't enjoy as much. Therefore, suits Piastri a smidge better. Front-limiting meaning the front tires are more accessible to wear.
in the long sweeping corners, which Piastri says he can manage a little bit better. However, that's also the case of Japan, it being a front-limiting circuit, and Norris finished in front of Piastri, so... We can say all these things and these stats about who does better at what track, but at the end of the day, it's just matters about results and who qualifies better, you know? So we can give you guys all this information, and then the craziest stuff happens.
So I do like, I love the circuit, and I know next year it won't be considered the Spanish Grand Prix. It'll probably be called the European GP, or I heard various names. But yeah. It could be called the Catalonian Grand Prix. It could be called the Gatorade Fruit Punch Glacier. It could be called a lot of things. So, yeah. I like the circuit a lot. I say that a little bit traditional circuit. It could just be called the Barcelona Grand Prix. We don't even know.
We don't even know. But I will miss this circuit when it eventually does get off the calendar. It's such a shame. Like, I'm tired of street circuits. Then stop paying tickets. Stop watching. We never do this. We're all tired of it. And all of us keep watching. of us keep attending these races at these trade circuits, then we're like, why do they keep doing it? Because they keep making money off us. I...
Really like I agree with you. I really like the circuit of Barcelona and I'm bummed that it potentially I know it's still going to be there next year in a different capacity, but. I think it's a great, great spot to host a Spanish Grand Prix and should just be its permanent home. And I think street circuits, for the most part, are pretty boring and we don't need any more of them. Yeah.
Well, we got to put our money where our mouths are, which will never happen. And I was also very anti-sprint race, but now we have this deal where Gatorade is the name that I sell the sprint races. So I guess we're stuck with sprint races. All right, James, can you be pro sprint races?
pro street circuits maybe they'll get rid of them maybe they're listening to this podcast they're like what is james how do we take him off this weekend actually let's just i what i want to know is like if we're selling the naming rights to all the sprint races what brand is buying the naming rights to all the street circuits Oh, no. Waste management? Waste management invitational. Like for the PGA. That was so funny. What else was there? Call 811 before you dig. That's a good one.
Even in every country, is it 811? Yeah. Again, logistically, street circuits make sense for Formula One, right? The hotels are there. The restaurants are there. Logistically, the travels, the infrastructure, et cetera, are in the city that the street circuit's being hosted in, which is much cheaper for the promoter. And all this other stuff. And circuits themselves are expensive. Talk about CODA. I mean, the way it was built, the land it was on, it just had to keep repaving it.
It's just a nightmare to get profitable as a racetrack. They've had so many tax breaks from the state of Texas and all this other stuff. I don't even know if Coda's actually made a profit or broke even, at least. Yeah, one, which is why we always try to sign off most of the time, saying support local, including your local racetracks, but it's just the way the cookie crumbles.
I also know this probably will never happen, but I really, really would love Formula One to go back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I know. There's probably some bad blood between F1 and IMS, especially with how, was it the 2006 U.S. Grand Prix? That was really like the Tiger manufacturer's fault. Let's just... Yeah. And then, of course, you have the fact that that Roger Pitsky owns Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And I. Is that bad?
No, but I'm saying like, I don't know what Roger Penske's relationship is like with Formula One as a series. I'm just speculating here. I don't know. Yeah, I'm just not sure they think the city of Indianapolis, and I'm so sorry. Even though I think I did in our previous podcast calling it the Midwest. When you have places like Vegas and Miami.
Yeah. That hosts those circuits already. Right. And then you bring in tourism. Like, people already want to go to these cities. Well, not anymore. But people usually want to go to these cities to visit anyway. And they're like, oh, an F1 race. Of course. I will go attend. And then Kota was just a good place.
for a racetrack. I don't know if we want to go to Indianapolis as well as... Gosh, the track is a grade one... Watkins Glen? No, don't ruin my Watkins Glen like that. Indianapolis is an FIA grade one circuit, so they have... Is it recently? It has to be. I think that's on a list, or maybe they've recently lost its FIA grade one. It was for the longest time, if it has lost it recently, an FIA grade one circuit to this day, because I'm in 2006.
In time, years, 75 years, it's not that long ago. But yeah, I guess they can do the road course, but not a lot of people like the road course anyway, even for NASCAR or GT World Challenge and things like that. Yeah. I mean, would you rather have, ah, here's a good question for the comment section. Would you rather have a street circuit or Indianapolis road course? If you had to pick.
It's a track. For a new race or replacing one of the existing? Yeah, let's say we're replacing like Miami, whatever, whatever street circuit you dislike. Imagine we're replacing it. Would you rather keep the, let's say, would you rather keep Miami? I guess fine. Would you rather keep Miami or Indianapolis street circuit? Indie. Are you saying that because you're indie biased? Yes. Because I like the idea of actually going to a track. Yeah. And now that I've been there and I saw how nice it was.
And just how it is purpose-built and it is ready to host a race with very little notice. Like, it's just, it's there. to host a great race. Like. I think that GA fans would be surprised by how better the viewing experience is at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Right. Comparatively to any other GA experience track. How much you can like really see. I mean, the TV screens everywhere.
It would be very impressive. Yeah, my radio died halfway through the race, and I thought I wasn't going to be able to follow it, but there were screens everywhere, and you could actually hear the PA system. relatively well, so it was easy to continue to follow the race even without watching on my phone or listening on the radio. There's going to be some reason we haven't gone back yet, and we'll circle back to everyone when we find out what that is next week.
Yeah, for sure. Let's talk about something that might be keeping you up at night. Cybersecurity. According to Vanta's latest state of trust report, it's the number one concern for UK businesses. That's where Vanta comes in. Whether you're a startup, growing fast, or already established, Vanta can help you get ISO 27001 certified and more without the headaches.

Because when it comes to your business, it's not just about keeping the lights on. It's about keeping everything secure. Anything else you want to talk about before we get into predictions? No, let's just jump into predictions. Yeah. I have Firpol. Oscar Piastri.
If people haven't noticed by now, they definitely have, that I am an Oscar, I like Oscar Piastri a lot. For P5 for the race, I'll have Lewis Hamilton, P4, George Russell, P3, Max Verstappen, P2, Leno Norris, P1, Oscar Piastri. Really, the McLarens can go either way.
I just think McLarens are going to dominate. And as James has said in the fun facts section previously, they'll dominate by insane margins. I have a bold prediction I'd like to add in for this week that Fernando Alonso finally gets points. Poor guy. This will be the race emboldened by his home country. This is it. I also doubled. I almost doubled down and put him in P5 again because like.
I just, I believe in him, but I don't believe in the car. You know? Watch, he just gets podium. Watch, he wins the race. All right, my predictions. I'm going to continue to ride the Landon Norris train. Landon Norris is going to put it on pole. P5, Lewis Hamilton. P4, Charles Leclerc. P3, Max Verstappen. P2, Oscar Piastri. P1, Lando Norris. We have a similar top five. I think our McLarens are swapped.
I don't think the Mercedes, I think Mercedes are going to continue to struggle. Ferraris are going to continue to be there but not close enough to compete with Max and the McLarens. And yeah, that's what I got. Man, I really think you think the Ferraris are going to beat the Mercedes here. Both of them. Do I think the Ferrari is going to beat both Mercedes? Yeah. Well, clearly, yes, according to your predictions. According to my predictions, yes.
I think they're going to continue to struggle, especially because we've talked about how Mercedes historically in the last few years have performed very well in cooler temperatures. And it's going to be hot in Barcelona. I mean, you know, my my reasoning is all like anecdotal. Like, no, I like that a lot. I mean, I think you're bringing logic to your. Yeah. to your predictions. I would also, that's interesting thing that I didn't think about. What I was also thinking about is when,
Everyone else is doing really well on their tire degradation, as in they don't have a lot. Mercedes seems to have struggled in these, like, quote-unquote circuits that should have been normal. We saw that in Japan, etc. So, yeah, no.
I could definitely be wrong about George Russell. I just think he's as upset as George Russell ever gets, which I don't know if he does. I think Mr. Consistency just wants that back. I mean, having both teammates up there for track positions, you definitely want to get it. everyone into q3 that's gonna be a huge for for mercedes that they can do that as well so fingers crossed for sure anything else you want to talk about before we go ash
