Legendary director Alfred Hitchcock had almost fifty films to his name when he decided to take on an adaptation of a Robert Bloch novel that was inspired by a grisly true crime story. The studio didn’t want him to make the movie. He was warned against it, told the subject matter was in poor taste. So he financed it with his own money.
