Episode description

You know, I tried to embrace AI to create these show notes.  (There's so much I WANT to say that I find show notes difficult to write).    What I found out ... is that AI really does suck sometimes and for this episode it totally missed the mark.  Soooooooo back to the drawing board.  ;)

In this episode I talk about the emotional rollercoaster that I worked a client through.  She was working as a VA (but massively undervalued by the company that had hired her).  She wanted to walk away and start a new business ... but fear of having no money coming in, held her back.

Often, coaches will often quote Tony Robins:

If you're going to take the island, you're going to have to burn the boats.”

I certainly COULD have given her that advice ... but we went through a process instead and she immediately was able to STOP that rollercoaster she was on.

Embracing Imperfection and Taking Action

Speaker 1

I'm so glad that you're here . You're listening to what the fuck did she just say With your host ? That's me , sandra Presley . I'm all about living our best life and finding our zone of brilliance and then removing the resistance so that we can go all in . I say random , crazy shit , which is why I called this podcast the way that I did .

I really hate long drawn out intros . So let's fucking go To week two of my renovation series , and it's moving along nicely . I have paint , I have some flooring , I'm not trim yet in this room , and so therefore I chose to not bring in all of my furniture . Yet there's nothing on the walls .

What that means is that it might be a little bit echoey in here . You know me personally . I have been working on embracing imperfection . I have this thing that I constantly am working on is that I struggle with everything having to be perfect before I sit down and do something .

So before I create a podcast , before I write a post , before I do anything and I like everything to be neat and tidy you know what happens if you do that is that sometimes you don't take fucking action , and it's driving me crazy , and I know that it's something that I need to work on . I don't need everything to be perfect to show up in an amazing way .

So this renovation has really pushed me to show up in my kick ass way , in an imperfect setting , which I love , and I'm rocking it .

I gotta tell ya , I've made so many changes in my business and just I feel like sometimes I work outside , sometimes I'm working in my bedroom , I'm kind of moving all around and it's giving me new perspective and I am loving it , anyway . So I wanted to share from this echoey room or just go along with it .

Right , I wanted to share from this room that I'm in a conversation that I had with a client in the last few weeks or last few days , and it was so good , and I think that it's something that we should really talk about , because a lot of times I speak with beginner entrepreneurs , women who really want to take that next step , but they don't really know what

to do , or they're currently in a job that is sucking the life out of them and they want to build a business that they don't have enough energy in order to do that , and so they're not sure what exactly they want to do . I was talking to this client . She's a contractor , but she's working for this person who hands out the contracts to her .

So she's making a good monthly wage with this person , but she's not really getting credit for the work that she's doing . She's kind of being asked to do things in the contracts that are not really what she wants to do . And while she's been working she's come up with this the most amazing . All of my clients have the most amazing ideas .

You know what I mean . They come up with like the most amazing things . And so she's working in this job and she knows she needs to quit it . Well , at the same time , she's scared to quit that because that's walking away from money , and then that makes her massively fearful and she doesn't want to go back there .

So she literally goes on this rollercoaster to nowhere and trust me , I am there a lot . It's like massive fear , massive faith , massive fear , massive faith , and you can literally make yourself crazy doing this . And so she came to me and asked my opinion . Now she was scared , shitless , because she thought I was gonna say you just need to walk away .

You just need to walk away from your job and go all in . Now , that is what I did . In a way .

Finding the Right Business Path

I was working for the federal government . I worked for 23 and a half years .

I was making six figures and I got myself into this situation where it was like this loop , where I wanted to not quit my job until I replaced my six figure a year income in my business , while at the same time I believed in my mind that there was no way that I could replace my income if I was working at my six figure a year job .

So I just sort of spun around like a dog trying to catch its tail and I definitely have gotten I've gotten the advice so many times to just , like Tony Robbins says , burn your boat . His quote is if you wanna take the island , then burn your boats . With absolute commitment comes the insights that create real victory .

And you know a millionaire friend of mine who he was multi-millionaire and he was a motivational speaker . He said you'll never build a business you want if you have a job that keeps you comfortable Same sort of idea that Tony Robbins said .

And it took me years I mean years to be able to get myself to the place where I was comfortable walking away from that six figure a year job . Everyone that watched my journey didn't know the roller coaster to nowhere that I was on . They didn't know all of the years where I went . I need to quit my job . I can't quit my job . I need to quit my job .

I can't quit my job . I want my six figure a year business but I can't quit my job . And how am I gonna do this ? I mean , oh my gosh , it's awful and painful . Everyone just saw what . Sandra priestly quit her job . She walked away . Is she insane ? It seemed like it came out of nowhere , but it didn't .

Until I can make that decision where I was emotionally regulated enough to know that it was right , and that was the advice that I gave her , this client of mine was that she thought she assumed I was going to say burn the fucking boat . And that's not what I said . What we did was we went through the various options that she had before her .

So the first option was walk away from the business with absolutely no money . Tell the chick to stuff it and try to make . She had other business opportunities that she could do as well . So work on as fast as you can , making money as quickly as possible . That was one option . The other option was to stay .

Stay with this company and build her business in the same like . Stay with the company and build her business as much as she could . The other option was to stay working as a contractor and maybe even reduce her hours a little bit so that she could focus on building her business at the same time .

And there was a couple other options , but they don't really matter In this scenario . I'm only going to give you two . Here's the thing . This is the trick . This is how I asked her . With your goal in mind . We know that this business that you've created is perfect for you . You're excited about it . You love it . You can't wait to start it .

You can't wait to see this beautiful business that fits you like gloves . So it is not on the table to walk away from that . It is on the table that we are going to build this business . Which of the scenarios that I have laid out for you makes you feel emotionally regulated ? Which feels good to you ? Which makes your ass hucker ? So many people think ?

Just take the risk , do it scared . And I'm telling you , if you are not emotionally regulated , if you are so scared about the money that you don't have , if you are panicking , you're going to build a business that you end up wanting to burn down .

You're going to build that business to the point where you hate it because you're going to be doing panicky things in order to make money .

Building a Business With Backup Plan

When we talked about the two options , her choice was so clear and she got off this roller coaster . Her choice was I'm going to reduce down the clients that I've taken so that I can build my business on the side . I will be emotionally regulated because I won't be panicking about money , but I'm still going to go all in on this business .

You don't have to burn your boat . You don't have to only have plan A and not have a backup . You don't have to walk away from what you have now in order to take the first step and in order to be fully committed to building the business that you want .

When someone says you will never build a business that you want if you have a job that you hate , they're wrong . It's the focus that you need . What makes you feel emotionally regulated ? Do that , but , no matter what , don't keep your eye on anything but the goal that you have set for yourself . Thank you so much for listening .

I hope you've had some laughs , maybe some ideas , and that you've been inspired to take some type of action toward the life you've always dreamed of . If you feel so called , I would love it if you would share with your besties . Leave a review down below . I look forward to bringing you along this journey and I will see you in the next episode .
