I hope you did, because we're getting it again, a whole month's worth, because Gunther is going to take on whoever the World Heavyweight Champion is.
Coming out after Saturday night's main event. Yeah, I was about to say. Oh, it's not a full month because it's like at the start of June. Midorny, really, at the start of May. I'm Oli Davis. I'm joined by Luke Owen DAD. Welcome to the WrestleTalk Podcast, where we'll be reviewing Raw today. gables to wrestletalk.com forward slash support. We've got every single one over five US dollars. Indeed, yeah. But yeah, the, it was an okay episode of Raw. Yeah, like, None of the big hot show coming off the back of a pay-per-view. Just, it was a show. I kind of forgot Backlash was just two days ago, if I'm honest. Well, I guess the big storyline of that show, or the two big storylines, which are John Cena retained the title and Jeff Cobb.
So really the only big raw angle to follow up on was Becky Lynch and Lyra. Pat? Penta? Yeah, you could say Pat getting squashed for 14 minutes and the follow-up was... He's not here. He's not here at the start of the show. Michael Cole is announcing solo. Wow, Pat McAfee must be really solo. Oh no, here he is. He's dancing. He's hopping. He's standing on top of the desk. getting cheers from everyone. Oddly, so Alex, our sales guy, he's new to wrestling. He has gotten to wrestling via Netflix.
I work for you guys now. I'm going to start watching wrestling. I don't know anything about it, but I'm going to start. I was in the office today when that moment And he burst out. When Pat McAfee, he burst out laughing. He was like, why is he coming? Why is he getting a full entrance? We were supposed to be having a match. Yes, because also, I think New Day have come out. You've got the War Raiders. No, it was during the Chad Penter match. Was it Chad Penter? So Chad and Penter are in the ring.
And then Pat McAfee makes his entrance. Yeah. And the focus is on him, him, him. Not what was actually a pretty decent match between Penta and Chap. Anyway, so this is all connected to the Gunther lead story thing, because... Pat McAfee comes back, in my opinion, he is not selling the Gunther match anywhere near the level he should be. You know, he goes like, yeah, look, here's a bruise on my collar. I've got a burst blood vessel in my eye. You should be in a wheelchair in one of those cartoon
head-to-toe body casts. Well, I figured he wasn't going to be because he stood up after the map. He was fine once the bell rang. And he earned Gunther's respect. Yeah. Because that was the point of the story. Not to get over Gunther as an unstoppable threat following his World Heavyweight title loss. Yeah, it was to get him a pat. It was to get pat over.
And it worked because I would say that Pat was one of the most over babyfaces on this whole show. They have built... We give WWE criticism a lot for maybe not building new babyfaces. Well, they've built a great babyface. in their commentator, Pat McAfee, who will leave them the moment the college football starts up again. And Michael Cole.
I think Michael Cole is more over now because of Pat's feud with Gunther. You know what? That's actually quite good. I think that's a good result to have. So, Jey Uso is involved in the opening segment where he sort of saves CM Punk and... faction but then he comes out later on he does a prolonged yeet entrance he's got a kid in his arm at one point
And he calls out Logan Paul because they're going to have a World Heavyweight Championship match at Saturday night's main event. Yeah, which is in... When is that? I think it's, I want to say the 28th of May. I don't know if that's a Saturday. I'm just feeling like it's a 28th kind of show. Just feel that it is. Is that a... Because the only one I really know is the one that's on the day of all...
Yeah, the 12th of July or the 13th of July. That's the 12th of July. Well, we don't know. No, you're thinking of Evolution. Oh, you're thinking of the other Saturday night's main event. Yes, it's May 24th. So he's got this match against Logan Paul, which has been set up from the night after WrestleMania, really, or maybe two weeks after WrestleMania. They did the angle last week, which was off air when Logan punched him and knocked him out. Yeah. And then Gunther's music hits.
Gunther walks down to the ring, says you're not a natural champion, Jey Uso, you beat me, but... The winner of Jay versus Logan will face him on the June 9th episode of Raw in Phoenix, Arizona. That's the episode of Raw after Money in the Bank. Yeah. So that is four weeks. It also means that Jay will not be defending this title at Knight of Champions or Money in the Bank. Yes. And then Jay was like, I will beat you, how dare you, whatever, and I'll beat you. So what we've got here is...
The World Heavyweight title picture I'm less concerned about because it actually is quite multi-layered right now. He's got the feud with Logan, he's got this feud with Gun- He's got the burgeoning feud with Seth Rollins and Brombreaker. Sami Zayn had that side-eye glance. Exactly. He's got some nice plates that are spinning. Sami, I'm adding less into that because I think that is more that Sami is going to win. is going to be... But certainly, I'm going to be watching.
But he has got three plates spinning. So that's good for Jack. Yeah, again, it fleshes him out. And, you know, even if we're not in, I'm personally not that into Jay as a champion, but I can enjoy... the fact that he's got a lot of things going That's healthy. And looking at this entrance, there was all that chat. We had this chat as well. It's like, is this Yeet thing passing its sell-by date? Because it felt like it was getting less and less over as the weeks go on. Here it was like...
A very big crowd. I think it is city by city, but this crowd, well, they wanted to eat. They came to this show wanting to do the JUSO. But not for actual wrestling matches, it seems. Oh, well, no. No, no, no. They wanted to do the entrances. And that's, you know, it's fine. You pay your money, you can do whatever you want. I'm sorry. And they wanted to jump what as well. But yeah, they were, this was a over-Jey Uso.
The problem more is Gunther. Because, just a little recap of Gunther, WWE booked Gunther phenomenal. champion. NXT UK champion? Yeah, he was champion for like three years or something. NXT UK champion and then Intercontinental champion. Undefeated. beat everyone. Some of the best matches. Dream McIntyre. He's been champion for 80% of his WWE run. Fantastic. The moment he wins the World Heavyweight title at SummerSlam last year.
They had no idea what to do with him all of a sudden. They tried to make him babyface. He's doing comedy with Bret Hart, which while fun, it's not kind of the Gunther you want. Then he's playing second fiddle to Finn Balor and Drew McIntyre. Damien Priest. Damien Priest, sorry. Yes, there is the Jey Uso feud that went on for a while, but that's the only real feud.
substantial feud I can say that Gunther had in his world title reign. Yeah, because he had matches. You know, he had the match with Randy Orton, which was done because they had a botch at King of the Ring. And then it was... It just felt like mid-card fodder. Like his title reign felt like one of the, say the fourth most important thing on Raw on any given week. Maybe a third at a push. And I feel like that's kind of the thing with Jay at the moment is like setting up...
Gunther and Logan Paul as challengers sort of makes it feel like, yeah, we are just this mid-card thing. But really, the Seth Rollins one is like, that's the one that's going to elevate this title back up. But when we say elevate this title back up... when Seth wins it. And so if Jay is going to be doing this, right? So he's not facing anyone at Night of Champions. So he didn't face anyone at Backlash. He's not facing anyone at Night of Champions.
is not facing anyone at Money in the Bank. Is the next pay-per-view after that at Summerslam, when Seth might win the belt? In which case, if I've had no pay-per-view title defenses, then loses it at Summerslam. That, I would say, not a great world title rank.
But also I feel like we should really get this belt onto Seth Rollins and try and get it back into this main event scene. Or find some main event people for Jade to feud with. Because no disrespect to Gunther, this felt like such a step back. Oh, yeah. For J and for the world title. Yeah. And you have to go back to Gunther's journey. He gets the mania, he loses the belt. And I think we're all quite thankful.
because that Jay Gunther feud was too long, but, you know, took a long time to get going. Wasn't even the great... at the end of it. It was exactly the level of match I expected it to be. Slightly better, actually. And then we're like, okay, Gunther's lost the title. Good, really, because we can reset him and do something else with him. And he goes into this Pat McAfee feud. Great first angle. Match was exactly what it could have been. Maybe shorter at Backlash. Great. He has squashed someone.
And then weirdly endorsed him afterwards. And then he squashed him. It's back to bully Gunther. This is what he should- And then the next move on this episode of Raw is Gunther, you are right back with Jay. And not just, you're right back with Jay as a challenger. at Saturday night's main event, maybe a three-way against Logan Paul, that's in a month's time. So essentially, a pay-per-view sign. Yeah, so we titled this episode, WWE's Gunther Problem, because...
I can hear myself, I actually said this to myself this morning when I was thinking about it, because Gunther's music hit, and I was like, oof, again? We've literally just done this, and we did it for a long, old time, because it was such a build between Rumble and Mania.
But at the same time, if Gunther is not in the world title program, then what are you going to do with Gunther? Because if you do anything else with Gunther, surely the question then becomes, why is he not in the world title picture? So he should be within this world title scene. but it feels like it's far too soon you know on 2k25 when you're doing my gm mode and it's like rivalry uncool We are on cooldown with this. Even with a month to go.
I don't want to see Jay and Gunther face each other again at this point. But at the same time, Gunther should be going for the World Heavyweight Championship because that should always be his goal and his prize in mind. I feel like we don't have a babyface room to go up against that can keep him occupied while we have Jay do some other challenge.
And Jay feels like he's got no other heels that he can go up against. Maybe it's a heel problem. I feel like Goldberg would have been a next great step. I know people are like, Goldberg, but actually that is a huge spot for Gunther to be in. The only other thing I can think of is what to do with Gunther is get him over to SmackDown. You said that to me earlier and I think that's a very...
There's reportedly a draft coming up, hopefully by the end of this month, I think. So there's an excuse to move him over and we can do WWE's favorite thing. Have people on the wrong brand now? They're fining for the other brands tied. But yeah, if you've got any thoughts on what to do with Gunther, we're kind of at a loss. WWE clearly is. Yeah, because I feel like he's got no big baby faces to go and get.
but at the same time jay hasn't got any other heels to go against well other than seth rollins but you need to do the punk feud first so punk and seth are tied up like your two big main event is on your show you're a and one are busy. It's because they're busy with each other. Which also kind of ties up... So there's no other top babyface for Gunther to go against, and it means that Jay has only got the other two better heels, which are Logan and Gunther.
Seth is like, I want to concentrate on the World Heavyweight title. Paul, you're a wise man. Do a deal with Gunther to feud with Punk. And then that's Punk's thing. for a month. We'd actually separate Punk and Rollins, which we feel like they need to be separated for a bit. They've been together for like a year and a half now. Yeah. And it's never, like, they've never been the one I want to see. I know it's been entertaining, but I've always been more into Punk vs. Roman.
punk versus drew mcintyre yeah and seth's just always there and yes it's weird because he does the best work sometimes yeah you're like yeah but i'm not into you versus punk as much But yeah, let us know. if you want to have your thoughts read out on the resttalk.com forward slash support is the link to click you can click it down there or our wonderful moderators are putting it out now a few have said Chad Gable For Gunther. Or for J. Oh, that's too low down the card, unfortunately. He's kind of that lower mid-card slot, unfortunately, at the moment. Carrion Cross is someone, another name that...
putting in. That would be, again, we really like Karrion Kross. He needs a lot of building up before he can go against Jay. Yeah, that would make Jay, that would bring Jay down. So very interestingly, Karrion Kross reportedly had the number one merch sale last month. I think the WrestleMania weekend... with the work he was doing leading up to it and then that shoot promo. that he did and then the documentary he put out by himself on his own YouTube.
I think it's really raised internet stock in Karrion Kross. And that can get you quite far in some places. But I think WWE themselves now need to do the on-screen. capitalize on that and they will do in eight months time a couple of other suggestions we've got here Solo Ben Bala Jimmy Jimmy Uso Real Double J here says, Come with me down the garden path. Logan beats jam.
Gunther beat down of a human version of slime found under the lockers of your local swimming pool for the belt. Gunther's poised to win until Ludwig interferes because he's a vision. Logan Paul and Gunther was one of the matches we fantasy booked for WrestleMania 41. I don't hate it as an idea, but I do think that really undermines Jay.
Aidan here says, Hi guys, after our promo last night, I fully want Becky to win money in the bank. It always works better with a heel, fits her new character of I'm burying everyone, and I want to watch the IWC burn. Much love, kiss kiss. Think she'd use it on the IC title then? Is it? Or is it a bad idea? I mean, it's a bad idea because I think you should always go for the top title. But yeah, with her and Lyra, it kind of makes sense for them storylines.
Italian Josh here says hi lads okay raw very pleased Rox and Julia are main eventing but I need more video pa- I do, but not everyone watches NXT. Also, when you read my chat on Sunday, I realized I've got to change my account name and use my actual one. Oops, lots of love. Yeah, Rox and Ginny, a main event. We'll talk about that a bit later because that's the main event of the show. and it not hurt anyone.
And FlynnNY here said, if Seth's group ends up being similar to Evolution, how do you guys feel about Jericho being the Ric Flair of the group? I know it's unlikely, but I think he'd fit with Seth and Heyman, and I can't think of anyone in their 50s that's a better shout. Love you guys. Is NSF days. Yeah. I had never once looked at this faction and thought, Chris Jericho. And you? No, but I get what Flynn is saying, which is the idea of if you are copying... Well, surely Paul Heyman is not...
I think so. I think, if anything, this faction needs another young guy. That's it, yeah. Probably a young cruiser. You need your Randy Orton. Yes. You've got your Batista and Bron, you've got your Triple H and Seth, and you've got your Rick and Heyman. What you need is a new Randy. Yeah, like a young heel technician. to counteract bras when everyone wants us in theory.
Right, well, keep getting in your chat games. Restalk.com forward slash support. We'll read out all of them before the end of the broadcast. Just before we get into the play-by-play review of Roar. Yes, as we discussed last week, we will be reviewing AEW Dynamite Beach Break. I'll even get the name right of the show. It's not Spring Break.
It's beach break. We've been talking about it and Oli keeps calling it spring break and I'm like, no, no, no. Joey Janela's. Joey Janela's spring break and also AEW did spring break through a couple of weeks back. This is beach break. So, yeah, thanks for bearing with us. Thanks for your feedback as well. So make sure to tune in on Thursday for the WrestleTalk podcast where we're covering AEW Dynamite and probably the Sabu's passing as well, which is deeply sad.
Also, yeah, the sort of nature, the ethics of that final match. Yeah, I mean, maybe some more news will come out of it before we get to record, but it's been not a great 24-hour. about the Sabu passing unfortunately and then maybe we'll have a third topic for the show as well maybe we'll try and find ones a little bit lighter I've got a killer recommendation. Have you? Oh, yeah. You are going to hear it, and you're going to be like, why have we even got this?
if you thought chunky batman bat chunks was the best it could get Right, this episode of Raw began with a CM Punk promo. And Cole was like, this is the first time we're CM Punk since Wrestlemania. and i was like what he's been here twice to make this well what he was saying was this is the first time we're here I was like, oh yeah! That is quite something to hold off on a punk promo.
while him still being around in angles. I thought it was quite well balanced. I actually think one of Triple H's great strengths as a booker of a wrestling promotion... I genuinely think one of his great strengths is he's very good at stretching out stories. I mean, this is a completely positive way. the olden days of WWE in the old regime of WWE Punk would have done the promo he did here the week after he got beaten down
And they would have also tried to... Vince's whole movie was always trying to further story, or just do the same thing, but trying to further story. There's like, you would do 50 angles on an episode of Raw, whereas Triple H will do 8 angles on an episode of Raw that includes... So it means that you can have Punk be beaten down and then have him do a promo three weeks later and it doesn't feel like we've been waiting three weeks for Punk to do a promo. I genuinely think he's very...
So the first time we're hearing from Punk since the Paul Heyman betrayal Punk says the person I hate most in the world right now is myself. Oh, punk. Because he was like, he turned on me once before with that horrible, was that money in the bank? It was, put him in and hit him with a ladder. Yeah. Such a horrible... And he said, Shame on you. Fool me twice. Shame on me.
So he's going to get his hands around his fat little neck. Yeah, he got him fat twice in this promo. I know. It's weird, isn't it? Because I feel like fat isn't really a thing people say these days. Yeah. But he said a little right after it. So maybe it was like... It takes the edge off, doesn't it? Someone surely will be able to remember this. Someone once called someone skinny fat. Oh, so your skinny fat back or something. Oh, surely that's Scott Stein. Oh.
Skinny fat, I can't remember. Skinny fat is a phenomenon. Well, you can be very skinny, but you're fat on the inside. And I don't mean mentally. I mean like you have a lot of visceral fat around your organs. Yeah, someone called someone skinny fat. I can't remember what it was.
If you've ever met someone who is very slight in frame, yet all they do is eat McDonald's, you're like, how are they so skinny? Well, it's because they're likely skinny fat. On the inside, they have loads of visceral fat, and it's really bad for- There you go, there's a little... This guy right here. Oh really? So yeah, when I was a freelance movie writer, it was very difficult to eat.
well because I had to travel into central London for film screenings and they always did film screenings at either 11 or I was like I was usually at like 11 a.m. And so it meant that I can't eat before I go in because I can't have lunch at 11am. And by the time I travel back, it's going to be like getting on for half to 3 o'clock. That's too late. I'm better off just eating something while I'm here in central London. So I decided to try and rid the world of... And I have a couple of sandwiches.
I made some sandwiches at home. But what I wanted was... And so I would go to... No, but you're blaming the scheduling of the films. No, I'm justifying my actions by talking about the scheduling of the films. So I would go to the McDonald's in Leicester Square and I would... large Big Mac meal, a double cheese. and whatever seasonal side they had on at the time.
probably four times a week. You had two burgers for lunch. And chips. That came with the large Big Mac meal. So you get your Big Mac, your large fries, and your large drink. And then I would have either a double cheeseburger or a quarter pan. And then I would get whatever seasonal side is. That might be like mozzarella dippers or something like that. And then on occasion, I might have a third burger as well, because really McDonald's is not that filling.
Have you just been commissioned by Peacock to do a tour of McDonald's orders? No, I'm skinny fat. Because I was probably doing myself no favors. Sometimes you shake it up and you get a KFC and get, like, you know, a tune. for yourself I was in the KFC late Friday Shame.
getting my fillet tower meal. Oh, wasn't that the best one? The box meal? No, I had to eat it on a tube so I could do the full. I couldn't have the beans and like a little tray and a tray on my lap. The gravy's the best bit of KFC. And someone came over. WrestleTalk. So why here? Why is it never when I'm out with my family? Why is it never when I'm in a cool, trendy pub?
Why is it here next to Waterloo Station at 1am in my Barry Oakey t-shirt? At least it was Barry Oakey. Right, back to CM Punk. Guy walked past me at Asda over the weekend. And he just, like, you know, we didn't make icon or anything. I was trying to, like, usher my child towards the closing stuff. And he walked past me and just went, gem that gem. Very nice. Shut up.
So, yeah, Heyman then comes out. When Heyman's voice sounds on the Tannoy now, I described it in my review earlier. Tannoy's a brand name. Tannoy's a brand's name. You want to get into this? It's got a PA system. We just did three minutes on McDonald's orders. You just want to get into the Tannoy now?
It's a vacuum as well. It's not a Hoover. It's a branding. I always say vacuum. I know. And I'm not correcting you here. I go out of my way to say vacuum in conversations. We talked about chores just two days ago. My child is three and a half. She's calling it a Hoover. I'm like, that's a vacuum. So I'm gonna say I hadn't right. So, yeah, Heyman's voice sounded, if you'll let me continue. I won't even make the point I was going to make. Watch the edited review for that.
And you think, oh my God, Heyman's going to do something. Punk's saying, come into the ring. And then Seth Rollins and Brom Breaker come out as well. And over the music... Punk goes, you're just a song, kid. At some point, the bell's gotta ring. I felt the punk was off in this segment.
That was a weird line. It was a weird line, but he also had a weird line in his promo as well when he called Seth Rollins a Teemu CM Punk. Like, what does that even mean? It's not his best material, is it? No, because Rollins hates everything that punk is and stands for. So why is CM Punk being like, he's just like me? But he's not, though. He really isn't like...
He didn't leave and then trash the company and then come back. He stayed with the company. That's his whole character is that he stuck around. So I don't get that. And then to be like, yeah, sometimes the bell's gotta ring. when he had that great match with Jey Uso last week. It felt like he's out of material. That great steel cage match with Punk. That great raw Netflix match. The main event of WrestleMania. Yeah, at some point. No one's looking at Seth and going, this guy can't.
We're saying he dresses stupid. His voice is annoying. His song is stupid. He should be more of a heel. It wasn't Punk's best stuff. I think he's out of material. I think... Maybe he's a bit annoyed that he's still in this Seth feud. I don't think Punk returned to WWE to feud with Seth Rollins for a year and a half. I think he wanted to fight Roman. I think he wants to fight John Cena. He wants to fight The Rock. No matter what he does, Seth Rollins is in his story.
And so Seth says, actually, Punk, you're gaslighting us all because Heyman, you put him in the bad position. You betrayed Paul. when you called in the favour to be in his corner. But you just want to play the victim. How about we help you do that? Run, go kick his ass. I actually thought Seth was great here. I thought Seth was great here. And then Punk had another weird line. Because the story should, and I feel like it has been.
is that, like, Seth doesn't want to send Bron down because if he does that, bad things are going to happen. You know what I mean? Sammy was like, Bron, you've got to go do this now. And I hate that you've got, I hate that Sami's going to suffer this, the wrath of Bron. So he's like, we can arrange you being a martyr. Bron, go get him. Punk just goes, shout over the mic. Are you going to bark all day, little doggy? Are you going to bite? It was a line from Reservoir Dogs. And I'm like...
Should you not be scared that Bronn's coming down to attack you? Surely this whole reason we're doing this Bronn thing is that he is this laser-guided missile that everyone is afraid of. But Punk's here be like, no, whatever. Are you gonna bark all day? To Bronn Breaker of all people. Who does nothing but bite. But I will criticise Brom. You know, I'm a big fan of Brom. And I said on the Backlash podcast, I just want to see him do the things I wanted to see him do. And he didn't run.
Bron just walked down calmly. I thought you should be running right now. Why aren't you running? Why haven't you already speared three guys? It's five minutes into this show. Come on. Get to the fireworks factory, Bron. So they all brawl and then Sami Zayn makes the save, but then Seth gets a chair, because of course he does it, Seth. That's awesome. Guy likes to chat And then Jey Uso makes a save And then it's like the three baby faces And Seth and Brom back off And I thought oh that's weird
Does that mean that they're going to get a third member? I think this is just long-term. It's just keeping that plate spinning for when Seth faces Jay. I mean, I've said it earlier at some point.
but it feels like SummerSlam could be a time to do this. When Jey Uso came out, Michael Cole said that Jey's here to even up the numbers. They actually were three on two against them. It was evened up when Sami came out. I am disappointed that Jey didn't do a 15 minute... for this save like Jeff Hardy style he was saving it for when he does this thing gassed out of his boots as well when he came out to do his promo boy he picked up a kid they're not heavy but they're not light oh I know
Penta then took on Chad Gable, and Gable tried to take off Penta's mask early. This is where Pat McAfee sort of steals the spotlight. I thought it was a really decent match. Of course it was. Of course it was. Gable went for the splash off the top rope and Penta caught it. the Codebreaker. Yeah, it was awesome. And the finish was a Mexican Destroyer. We AW Mart's call out.
a panama sunrise it was a panama sunrise variant and he gets the win off of that yeah very enjoyable match very very good um love seeing penta wrestle love seeing chad gable wrestle I don't think Michael Cole can still say, depends who's taken the WWE by storm, it's been five months. He's just on the roster now. And he's lost a bunch. And he's lost a bunch. But I very much enjoyed this. I didn't love the staging of the past.
very weird but overall I thought Roxanne Perez and Julia got a short video package to explain and get over who they are and that they're going for the women at the very top of the... To make a name for themselves. We're in the clubhouse. Interesting. Fun. Fun character direction for Dom. But I don't know if I'm thick. Is this new? I've not seen him be thick before. He's fairly dim. He's not street smart. But there's a difference between not being street wise and not knowing how times...
I think this was fairly in keeping with Dom's character. Really? Yeah. Huh. What happens? Dom is confused that Liv Morgan, who I think is in Japan because we now know the movie, which is... Yeah, a new Bad Lieutenant movie. If you've not seen the Harvey Keitel version, which is the original, or the, I actually think it's better, the Nicolas Cage version, I think Herzog did that one. Because Abel Ferrara did the first one. They are bonkers awesome films. And now with Miki doing this one. Yeah.
And the Phoenix Wright movie. Let's not forget this. It's his best work. But yeah, the whole idea that this was going to be a big Marvel... but wow, this is going to set Hollywood alive. It's not quite what this film is. Yeah, I think it was Mike Johnson said that it was going to blow people's minds when it was announced. And that's what made people say, she's Gwen Stacy. But really, it is a big deal if you're a film nerd.
who is just like, this is a very prestigious series that has always had very prestigious directors attached to it. That is a big deal, but if you are Joe Schmar- This is not her being cast as Gwen Stacy. And the fact that she's only been on this movie for like a week and a half, she's probably not in it a lot. I'm very excited.
Those movies are bonkers. Yeah. Again, go watch the Nicolas Cage one. It's fantastic. And she is also playing Kidnapped Daughter. So it's probably not going to be the most challenging. But Dom, yeah, he's confused because he lives probably in Japan. He's like, she just said good morning to me, but it's 9 over.
And everyone played this really well. I can't fault the delivery because then Carlito and Shady... skull is the earth and then this is the sun going around that was all really good I was but I don't know I just I never I never took Dom as someone that dumb. Yeah. And if I thought a lot of, I guess one of the things that's keeping me hooked in the Judgment Day, and there's very little, is the idea that they are a bunch of conniving, manipulative people at the top.
Liv, Finn, and Don. It's like the succession kids. Yeah, yes. Very, very good. Thank you. But they're not thick. They're egotists and they're self-absorbed and that's ultimately their downfall. but they do have basic general knowledge. So Dom not understanding how the sun moves around the Earth. To me, lessens the intrigue that, oh, is he going to outsmart Finn? So, I think it is done, because we talked about this on the Backlash review. Dom's going to go baby.
I think when they, Finn is going to be the one that turns on Dominic Mysterio. We thought, you know, they'll kick Finn out of the group. But I think Finn is going to be the one he's going to leave, start up his own group, or try and steal the Judgment Day away from Dominic Mysterio. But they kind of, I think, are heading in the direction of turning Dominic. and pushing him in that end. roll the lychee steel era of
In order to do that, you do have to do comedy. Well, don't do comedy, don't do this comedy. And you've got to make your audience laugh and have funny moments. So this is a way to give Dom a comedy moment. Where he can be a laugh, laugh, funny guy. The laugh, laugh, funny guy stuff should come from him being in these relationships with much hotter women.
that's the joke but he's the hot one yeah okay well you do it that's the comedy then yeah he like isn't live lucky to be with me blah blah blah all that stuff um the answer is yes uh because if you want to go down that Eddie Guerrero route, That works because he's smart and he fools people through the cheating. Very true, yeah. At the end of the day, it's a really dumb, funny joke.
Maybe it doesn't matter, but I just... I feel like we've spent more time on it than the writers did. It was really off-kilter to what I... It really caught me from a weird direction. the character or storyline we were doing at all. No, but I said that... For 18 months. Well, I said on the Backlash review that I'm surprised that WWE are not leaning more into the fact that he is getting babyface reaction.
over the people that are in the group and you know he was getting he was getting more babyface cheers than penta was at um But then I was thinking about it on the way home, and I was like, well, you're doing that story with Jacob in The Bloodlines. You can't do that exact same story on both shows on this exact same piano.
Have you watched WWE? I'm giving them credit. It does happen. So, Finn, Dom asks Finn about that interference of Backlash and Finn goes, oh, you're being paranoid, don't worry, I'll take it. This is when we get the Pat Sally. I'm right here. He's getting a bigger pop than some of the babyface Rostow. It was a great... It was a great program. He did a really good job. Michael Cole added to it. Gunther was excellent. Of course he's over.
Maybe use some of this on the people who wrestle. Well, isn't this... That's the gun for the story. They looked at what they did for this icy title run, and it was like, what should we do for the... I don't know. I don't know what we should do for the world title run. And they've done this thing with Pat McAfee here, and they're like, what should we do for our other baby faces? I don't know. If only we had a template of something that's previously worked.
We then get announced that on Saturday night's main event, it will be Punk and Sammy teaming up to take on Seth and Bron. And they catch the Punk and Sammy there in the locker room. Let's work together, fist bump. Sammy isn't Roman Reigns? I don't know if anyone else has figured this out, but this is a feud that was based around Punk and Roman Reigns. Well, you got your Reigns appearance. It was on the Raw after Mania, and you weren't expecting it. So, SummerSlam it is.
I think that is a very obvious thing that I shouldn't have got my hopes up for. But I'm still disappointed. Yeah. Because this is very... very much not the story that they should be telling us. There is an option to do a really hot story right now, and they're like, let's do the second gear.
Well, in fairness, they did set up the Sami one on the Raw after the Raw after Mania. Yeah. And they are telling you that this is what our WrestleMania 42 match is going to be. They've told the story well, but... Punk and Roman are the main stars. And you can do that later on in the year when Roman gets back. Which means that Rollins can continue to feud with Punk more.
Then we got the Creed Brothers versus the War Raiders. New Day are on commentary. They were very funny, again. And I thought the Creed Brothers were really good. New Day interfered in the end, which let the Creeds get the win, because the story is Woods and Kofi. Eh, that was alright.
Not a lot of heat, but it was good. Nothing really to add. I'm a bit disappointed in this tag division because I think War Raiders are really good when they're wrestling. I love the creeds. I think the New Day, they're the champions now. They had the great heel turn last December. This just feels like a total afterthought. Who else are they going to face? We've got three teams then. What other tag teams can you have them going?
I don't know, just make it better, I guess. I guess so. Seth, Bron and Paul are in a locker room. This was really good staging. He's sort of got Bron there looking concerned, like he doesn't know what to do. And then Seth's... Paul is just over Seth's shoulder watching it all. It was sinister. And Bronn is positioned as this.
I guess, naive presence in the group. Well, he's the guy that's learning. It's the learning tree. He is Big Bill. But he's also being manipulated, I think. And Seth said, don't worry, I've got one more task for you before you leave. He whispers it in Bron's ear, and Bron just goes... Should say as well, for anyone who takes my Learning Tree thing out of context, I mean, it's like the Learning Tree, but good. Like, this is actually a group that I enjoy watching. and then doing this camera.
Then we got the Jey Uso stuff, an EOSky promo on Roxanne Perez, Michael Cole remembered Sabu with a photo But, you know, sort of doing a live commentary on the images. Yeah, it was kind of nice. It worked. It was different. Yeah. Didn't have, like, a full-on, like, leave the memories alone video. But, yeah, I thought it was a nice tribute. Jackie Redman is backstage with Lovett Kaiser, and she says... Where have you been?
You've not done anything this year. And that the Kaiser is about to speak. And there's an attack off screen. Jey Uso's been taken out by Brombreaker. And the camera runs over there. Sammy and Punk tend to him. And again, Jay versus Bron next week. I smell DQ. Oh, I missed that. Is Jay versus Bron next week? Oh, fun. They also, in all of this as well, did a recap of the Logan attacking Jay angle that took place after all.
We had questions last week of like, why would you do this big angle not on TV? Well, the answer is because I can brag about social media numbers, which is what they did here. It's their biggest social media moment of the year. After that, we've got Finn Balor versus AJ Styles. Dom is not at ringside. Conspicuous by his absence. JD McDonough and Carlito are commentators pointing this out. This goes through two commercials, two commercial breaks. I really like it.
I thought I really I mean the crowd went into it but I was at home I really enjoyed it I think it's just, for some reason, Finn versus AJ rarely does it for me. i don't know man it's like i love both maybe another point in time i would have been into this But Finn in 2025 is Finn in 2025. AJ in 2025 is AJ in 2025. And I'm not that interested in seeing them wrestle, while very technically proficient, of course.
And what really annoyed me I'm really quite annoyed by this now and it makes me dislike the actual Ten minutes go by, crowd's sitting on there. Finisher gets hit or a setup or a signature. This is awesome. You can't go from silence to this is awesome. It's a Pavlovian, empty, superficial response. It's a knee-jerk reaction. I think that this is awesome has been a chant that has not meant what it actually means.
For quite a while. I would actually say arguably 15 years or so. It has been erroneously used. And I will blame the impact zone for that. Because the impact zone made everyone think that we should just chant this forever. because they did. I completely agree with you on that side. But I did think that this was awesome. I very much enjoyed this match.
You know, the match that they had, I can't remember what show it was now. It's the show where everyone fell ill and it was supposed to be... Rey versus Finn. Yeah, it was supposed to be a demon. Well, no, it was supposed to be a demon versus sister Abigail. And then it became Finn versus AJ. and Kurt Angle became the shield's dad. That was TLC 2018, I think.
I just... No, 2019? I don't know. It was the year I got married. 2017. I think it was a TLC. I think it was as well, yeah. Yes, it was, because it was like... The Shield versus 10 labs or so. Sheamus, Ryback. Well, Kodumus versus the Miz and the B team. And then they were like, actually, no, they're rubbish. We'd probably need to give them four other people to make this be like a credible match. So this match, I enjoyed it a lot. Not as much as I've got to kick out the next segment.
Well, we should just say that JD went to distract the referee, but then Penta takes out Judgment Day, and that lets AJ have a phenomenal forearm to win. Yeah. So maybe Dom's not as dumb as he looks. Maybe he did this on purpose so Finn would lose. and lose some face. The next segment. Yeah, it was Becky Lynch coming out for a promo. And again, I'm going to make a comparison to the learning.
So Jericho's last gimmick, the learning tree, was meta commentary on Twitter's perception of Chris Jericho. which is you take up too much TV time you don't get anyone over and it's all about So he did a character where he had a segment that's called TV time. He had a group that got no one over. The whole part of the group is, this group is not going to get anyone over.
and i'm not going to teach anyone anything and i'm not going to like and it's all about me i'm the main focus of all of this and i'm going to have these long segments that no one enjoys it was real meta common And so from that aspect of it, I got a bit of a kick out of it, but it really was hit and miss. And I think it was missed more than it was hit. Becky is doing the same thing.
Becky is doing a Becky Hogan gimmick. Because that has been the Twitter chat about her. She's Becky Hogan. She never puts people over. She's always about her. She's always stealing from the younger talent even though she is, what, 38? Get out of town, old hag.
That's her character now. She's Becky Ho. She's like, you thought I held people down? Oh, you've got no idea what's gonna happen. I'm gonna hold every single one of them down. You think I'm selfish? I'm gonna be even more selfish. You think I'm cutthroat? I'm gonna be even more cutthroat now. This was one of the most genuinely brilliant You People promos. I thought this was awesome.
I'm glad you liked it because I liked it too. I've seen some people like it's repetitive or another you people promo. The crowd did what to her? I don't think they were the best crowd. I wouldn't put that on Becky. I don't put that on Becky.
But yeah, she just starts the segment sitting on the top turnbuckle. Already feels a bit different. She claims that Lyra lost at Backlash. Yeah, it's the Triple H promo, but leaning into the second Undertaker match, which is they're like, yeah, you won at WrestleMania, but...
Who was the one who was standing at the end? It was me. So Becky Lynch was like, I went and had a nice shower in my lovely bus because I have a bus and Lyra's in the hospital. So who's the real winner? And she said, you used to like me. when I was losing all the time. And the moment I started winning, you couldn't see yourselves in me.
Because you're all failures. And I thought, that's a really interesting thing to point out. We did, I mean, because that was the big thing. We loved Becky as the underdog. We always wanted her to get pushed. And then she gets pushed. And then we're like... I get pushed a bit too much. Always Becky on top, coming back, winning the title. And, you know, there's nuance to that because those storylines weren't done very well. Think of the Bianca sudden return, which just beat Bianca for the belt.
And now you've got more exciting women have come through thanks to the work Becky did in those days. But yeah, when she says, okay, you think I'm this thing, how about I be that thing and see how you actually like it? Spoiler. I think we're going to like it a lot. But yeah, I like this. I thought it was a really good promo. I thought all the promos have been good. That's never been a problem. And I really like the line. I'm really curious to see where she goes. I like this a lot.
We're backstage and Natalia's just in the Alpha Academy now. Well, she's best friends with Maxine. That's been a long start writing on TV. Maxine Recruiter. I remember all that. I just don't remember the moment she's with Akira and dressing like a Pratt girl. Well, she had the tag gauntlet match. Oh, yeah. You know, Natalia then went off to do blood sports and some stuff with NWA.
The wrestling group, not the rap group from the late 80s. So Akira is talking about how he wants Rusev after what Rusev did to him and Otis the previous week. And we just got this cool Rusev video package. And they're like, no, you're not cleared because Russo And then Sheamus walks in. He's like, actually, I want a match. I'm like, oh my god, are we going to get Sheamus Rusev? That sounds... Against Grayson Waller.
That was a buck and a cold water, wasn't it? I ain't got to build him up for that and eventually I see a title. Gotta keep him busy before you get around to Dominic Wisterio. I think it is mathematically... Science physically impossible. to only face one of Grayson Moller or Austin's theories. I think if you face one, it's a law of the universe that you must then face the other. Yeah, probably. And it means that we can further tease that split as well. And the main event... Excuse my throat.
With 20 minutes left of the show was the main event tag match. Julia and Roxanne Perez, who are still reportedly listed as NXT stars internally, versus Rhea Ripley and Io Sky. Yeah. My first note for... Roxanne Perez is, don't wear gear that makes it look like you're tagging with Rhea Ripley. Wait, that was a shame, because I saw... There were moments when Perez and Julia worked really well as a tag team. I thought that was going to be the story of the man.
So it would have been better if, yeah, they looked more visually coherent and you put over Rhea and Io. They are not on the same page. They're two single stars. They were feuding at WrestleMania. I don't know when they became friends again. I know Rhea ran down and saved Io a couple of weeks ago against Julia Perez. They're protecting their young... It's a shame because this was a decent match. They're all excellent. The crowd are a bit naff again.
But then the finish was Rhea pushes Julia, which means Perez hits a crossbody on Julia. That lets Ripley hit the Riptide on Julia. Io gets Perez in a hole. and the babyfaces win, and then Rhea poses with Io, the belt's in between them, and Rhea looks at it. And that's it. Yeah, this was a barely inconvenience match for... They've been building them up for three weeks. And then apparently they've done an angle on YouTube where they've broken them up as a tag.
Julia and Roxanne Perez. So this was just done for this one moment here. These were just stepping stones for the EO and Rhea match that we'll get.
I really do feel though that this was a missed opportunity because you could have done the exact same finish but the other way around there's miscommunication between Sky and Rhea and that allows one of them to pin Rhea maybe even with that schoolboy that like quick roll that flash pin and stuff and rigging up i was like oh it was your fault because you hit
And now I blame it on EOSky. And instead they just won. And they've broken up this tag team. So what was the point of doing? Because what has Rox Amperous done on the main roster? She was the runner at the Royal Rumble. And then she's lost, lost, lost, lost, lost, lost, lost. And here you could easily justify Julian Perez getting the win. Wow. These two NXT upstarts who will likely be called up properly in that draft later on this month.
They beat Rhea, Ripley and Io Sky. Meanwhile, Rhea and Io lose nothing. Because they are not a coherent tag team. They're not friends. They're spewed. And it gives them more tension for the title match. Missed opportunity. I agree. Overall, I gave this a pretty low score because I found it quite uninspiring, stuff like going back to the Gunther feud.
oh, it's not Roman Reigns, it's Sami Zayn, and the tag match outcome. Ronin's and Punk. Ronin's and Punk, yeah. So I gave it 65%. Io and Rhea. It does feel like... I mean stale is the wrong word because it's not stale. That would be I think an over exaggeration of where WWE is at. But I do think repetitive is a fair word to use. It does feel like we have not, outside of Seth Rollins now tagging with Bron Breaker, it does not feel like we have moved on a lot since Wrestle.
And if anything, we're just doing what we did in the build to WrestleMania. the Nexus. That's right for the next few months we're going to be looking at 2010 WWE and when they were very creatively bankrupt and not many people were into the show and so they gave it this shock injection of excitement by bringing up seven guys and we're like we're gonna make a whole new faction and they're called the next and they did this killer angle eight eight yes sorry because danielson gets
which we actually do discuss. We cover all of it. We cover the formation of the group, Danielson getting fired two days after the group gets formed because they told him to do whatever he wants but didn't tell him he couldn't do one thing and he did that one thing so they had to fire him. To go into all of this, as we're going to be reviewing the episode of Raw, where they debut, which is a three-hour Raw in 2010. Viewer's choice, and the A-team are the guest hosts.
There is a night-long skit about the A-Team actors believing they are their own characters and IRS gasses the babyface. And then, genuinely, I would argue, there's quite a good payoff. I disagree. I laughed. But then there is this incredible angle at the end. with the debut of the Nexus, but on Patreon.com forward slash rest talk, we're also reviewing Money in the Bank 2010, which is the second pay-per-view after the Nexus debut.
And it's the show that leads into what sets up SummerSlam 2010, which will be our next episode next month. Right, let's do the remaining... R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R- This is your last call. Some guy here says, Hi, Luke, and not Luke. So with the news that Cena's last match will be in Boston,
Do you think he should drop the title to Cody at Summerslam? I'd worry that if you wait for his last match in his hometown, you might have a very anti-Cody fascinating because I was thinking about this over the weekend well sorry I was yesterday while I was off work We've been talking about Cena is heel up until this last match and then Cody finally beats him on this last match. He wins the title and Cena goes off into the sun.
But yeah, it's also his last match, which means he's going to get the thank you Cena moment. Wouldn't that be better if he was a baby face? I think you can do a double turn in the match. Oh, and turn Cody heel. Sorry, like a Rock Hogan where they both really have faced. It's difficult though, being on home ground like that. But I also think that's the right decision. I don't know.
I don't know how best to do that. I think we won't actually know until we get much closer to the time. Because there is a... I won't come to you in a second. Because there could be every chance that... Cena is going to turn babyface in the summer. Or, like I said, Cena retains, remains a heel, and with the worst timeline. He's ruined wrestling. I hate that. Starting a brand new WWE Championship, no thanks. A brand new WWE. Kazoo here said,
Well, Seth does. I think that's unfair on Seth. But yeah, Punk and Gunther, that they really should interact more. Gunther should be part of that mix, but he's in the Jaden. Ollie's Bicep Gains says, why has no one ever said that about mine? I'm working on it. Oats. I need more oats. I'm too busy having whore. Very good.
says problem with Gunther is he had no beef with the bloodline so WWE had no main event feuds for him that autumn botch was a blessing Jay's problem is that all of his main event challenges minus Seth are in the Smackdown US title scene yeah
And Eddie B here says, only major gripe with the show is breaking up Roxanne and Julia, put together randomly, fed to Io and Rhea, then they break up. The team had legs for a little bit longer. Just another example of no one else on Raw getting the shine over Rhea, not even the champion. Yeah, I do think that this is an example of WWE choosing to elevate Rhea again over building some new stars.
Glory to the God Emperor says, I will not call Becky, Becky Hogan, but in setting herself into the Rumble after Lana got injured, the 22nd match with Bianca at WrestleMania, the tag match last Mania, and the title match right after, kind of makes me understand why people call her so- Small correction, it wasn't mania, it was... I think the counter I would say to that is that was WWE creative doing that. The thing I think that people forget about Hulk Hogan or not forget or maybe don't know
The reason why Hogan kept being pushed to the top of the card is because he kept going to people and being like, you should push me to the top of the card. I have creative control. You have to do what I say. And that's why he was always at the top of the card.
From what I gather and what people say, Becky is not going up to creative and being like, oi dare, make sure I'm in the main event of this show. She's not. She is just playing a lot. She's just doing what creative give her. She's giving her input and sometimes maybe saying no to some things if it's bad. But she's going with creative. It's bad creative that's putting her in these positions. It's not Hogan. I think that the one...
Possible real drawback of Becky is she so clearly wants to be a heel. She finds it fun, I imagine. And that is difficult to do because people want to cheer her. Yeah. So I think a bit more thought should have been put into taking us on the journey. I agree. To booing that. Project Worm here says, does thick Batman actually get good?
Yes, carry on. I read the first three issues and was disappointed. He's a poor scrappy bat with a ton of resources. Anyway, a super caper tank batmobile and has done every single job in Gotham despite being 24. Yeah, he's a busy, busy, busy bat. I was gonna say, that you are, because the fact that you've not got a very good argument to that is not selling me on raiding thick bats. My good argument is read it and you'll see Alfred is a sort of black off. guy who's taking, like...
tracking Batman, see how he gets. The Joker is revealed to be the richest man on the planet. That's cool. Batman grew up, not Bruce, grew up in Crime Alley and all of his closest friends, his childhood friends still to this day. Ah, Selina Kyle. It's, uh, Edward Nygma.
it's croc it's the other names of people sure what you're explaining to me there are cool concepts that really work in the story with the characters okay that's what i was going to get to next because a lot of like elsewhere elseworld stuff Does that all ever feels like? It's like Marvel's What If? They are cool ideas and cool concepts, but that's all it is. It's very surface level things. Is it actually a really good comic series to read?
Six issues in, yes. Okay. I haven't read the seventh yet, it is out. Yeah. Niles Wild, it's more in line with The Ultimate, so like an Earth 2. Yeah. I'm not saying it, I was just as an example. because like project worm here being like yeah he's poor but he's got a tank makes me think that it's not been thought out I mean, I can't argue with that because that's true. That makes it feel like it's just a cool concept then, but they still want to do all the bad.
It doesn't matter, he's in a tank. But yeah, it's really cool and metal. The cape weirdly just goes into spikes and things when he moves. Yeah, so he's got all the same bat tech but he's got none of the bat money. I can't remember the specific funding conversation and exposition that was had.
And Andrew, the last airbender here, said, watching on delay, so it might have already been said, but maybe this sets up Seth winning money in the bank. Gunther kills Jay, but still loses during their match. Seth cashes in and wins. Appreciate you and the whole team on everything you do. WrestleTalk is so mean. that annoys me I appreciate the compliment but I know you did it to niggle at me Seth What an interesting thing. It is. One of the most famous holders and cash are in it.
It is. I would argue against it, if only because it feels like the men's money in the bank has needed a bit of rehabilitation. It doesn't make us have a lot of good. last few years of it's like Austin Theory, Damian Priest, Drew had it for like a couple of like an hour or so and then lost it.
I think you want to use this opportunity to elevate someone as opposed to giving it to someone who's... It's like giving it to Cena. What a pointless endeavor it was giving to John Cena, who always gets title shots. A pointless endeavor is giving it to Randy Orton. Seth Ryans can easily get a title shot. You want to give it to someone who doesn't get these opportunities. I agree. I've always thought Jacob Fatu would be my pick. But maybe you could give it to Braun.
And bronze in that match to sort of win it for the team, just so that's locked down when Seth wins the belt. That could be an interesting Judgment Day style story.
