¶ Introducing Dystopia Now Season
Okay. Okay. Well, well. Well, well, well. This is a special episode that amidst... season, not mid season, mid break episode, which we've been doing lately. And I kind of like this. This is where we, we talk about when the new season coming, what the season is and what the season picks are. That's right. Now, if you all remember, a couple months ago, we said, hey, let's pick a couple of seasons of what should be our next season. And then we found out.
Two sounded awfully good. And one was the Satanic Panic. But that was actually voted second to what was voted number one, which is our next season. Dystopia Now. Dystopia Now. And so we're going to make our picks for the Dystopia Now season. Exciting, exciting. And, you know, in the past when we've chosen either...
¶ Defining Dystopian Film Parameters
parameters or genre or whatever it is, it's been a little clearer. I had trouble deciding sometimes what exactly was a dystopian movie, not to be confused with an apocalyptic movie. And there's dystopian sci-fi, horror. Same with satanic panic. There was some overlap into things. So ultimately, and it's not to say I had to adhere to this. I went to... Wikipedia, who had a list of dystopian movies. Nice. And I think a lot of mine were on that list, though maybe one or two didn't.
And I fully have not formulated my final choices. Yes. By the way, this is Matt Gorley. Oh, and this is a little Pauly Russ. Little Pauly Russ. Paul, I volunteer to go first this time unless you really want to, because I feel like last time I went second and benefited from you choosing a bunch that I was already going to choose. And then I just got to fill the whole season with things I wanted to watch.
Oh, do you want to go for it? I'll go first because that way, if I pick one of yours, you get to go to the second and you get, do you get more options? You know what I mean? Cool. So a POC, I mean, see, I'm already confusing it. Dystopian films. Dystopian doesn't mean apocalyptic, but it can. And does it have to be a projection into the future?
Does dystopia? No, but it has to, if it's not into the future or if it's in the past, it has to at least be an alternate. Cause I don't believe, I mean, some would argue that we're already living in dystopian times, but I think when we're talking about the film sense.
It's meant to say that our world took a turn. Yes, yes. Do you think that was maybe why these movies got chosen even unconsciously by the trustees? It was sort of like... these times might be yeah this is just sort of on our mind let's watch movies about it while we're thinking about it could be could be who knows um okay so there's lots of different
types of dystopian films i mean on this list like it does get confusing like poor mccarthy's the road is on there right but that feels more apocalyptic than dystopian to me That's yes, yes, yes. I don't know. It's curious. And then there's the post apocalypse. Right. I guess that's what I mean. Yeah. But, but yeah, those show up on, on here a lot.
¶ Patreon Content and Dystopia Definition
Should we just, I'm just curious, the definition of dystopia. Oh, good. And while you're looking that up, I will let the trustees know and the listeners, the free feed listeners that this series will come out. December 5th for the Patreon and the week after the Friday after for the free feed. That's right. In between that time.
You will have received this episode, a mailbag episode, plus a special episode on the Patreon in the commentary slot where with the boys, Umar, Dustin, and Brantley, we took our... The 16 films that we've given the ranking of 13 to. Yes. And did a cozy tournament with those. And it didn't go the way I would have thought. I know. It was very surprising, but fulfilling. Yes.
Very satisfying. Yes. Speaking of satisfying, here's a satisfying definition for dystopia. This is better satisfying. An imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice. Typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic. Okay, interesting. So it can encompass all of that. Yes. Read that again just so that settles in. Dystopia.
And I'll do it in a voice like an opening crawl of a movie about a dystopia. Very good. Dystopia. An imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice. Typically one that is totalitarian. Or. And then it would be kind of like you don't see these words on the screen yet. And then the crawl goes up and you see the last words. Or. Post-apocalyptic. Okay. Okay.
All right. All right. I've got, I've got it down to four with four alternates. Yeah. I gotta, I mean, we're picking three. Yes. Yes. Three each. A big list. Some, yeah, probably four to five really want to do these. So, oh boy, that's going to be tough. This is our own dystopia, having to choose these.
¶ Matt's First Dystopia Film Picks
Okay, I'm just going to do my first one. Okay. And it's probably like my most pop pick. Okay. Okay. Total Recall. Fun. The Colin Farrell one. No, I'm just kidding. That's great. That's great. Now, when we listed off options of what the dystopia movies were when we gave the... Yeah. Some of the examples were one was Total Recall, Matt. Yeah. Another one was Escape from New York. Yes. There was a Logan's Run, a Rollerball, a Robocop, a Waterworld, and a Judge Dredd. Now.
I'm going to pick one from that list. RoboCop. Whoa, that was on my short list. Okay, okay. Or my long list. Yes, yes. Okay. Two Paul Verhoeven classics. Oh my gosh. I didn't even think about that. And he, did he do Starship Troopers as well? He did. Because that was on the list. That's also on my list. It is on your list. Basic instinct is not. All right. I got to decide. I mean, what year was RoboCop? RoboCop was 87. And Total Recall is 1990. It's 90. Okay.
¶ More Dystopian Film Selections
He was on a real dystopian run there. Yes. Yes. He was the canary in the coal mine. He knew what was going on during those crazy Reagan years. Yeah. Oh man, this is tough. Okay. My. My next film is also on that list. Hell yeah. And it also starts with an RO. Oh. Rollerball. All right, man. I've never seen Rollerball. Neither have I. Okay. Neither have I. James Caan. It's like a dystopian sports movie. Yes. Yeah. Yes. Okay. Yes. All right. That's really good. Okay.
This next one is not on the list, but it's a doozy. It's really a fun, I think. Minority Report, buddy. Oh, whoa. Yeah, that's a goodie. Yeah. Yeah. I just watched that like a month or two ago because they did that on, was it the rewatchables maybe? Oh, they did it? Yeah. Yeah. Cool. Yeah. So, I mean, already, these choices are awesome. Total Recall, Rollerball, RoboCop, Minority Report. I mean, if it was just those four, it'd be such a fun series of movies. No, I'm...
¶ Final Picks and Initial Lineup
Really torn on this next. This is your last pick. This is my last pick. And I have a real high road, low road choice here. Not the road. No, I'm not choosing the road. I've seen that once and that was enough. Oh man, what do I do here? My gut, I don't know why my gut is telling me to take the low road on this. I've never seen this movie. I love the idea of the concept. It seems like schlock.
Central. I'm going Demolition Man. Hell yeah, dude. That was on my list for sure. I also like it because it'll distinguish it from the others in that like... It is a dystopia movie, but it's like the, what if dystopia looked like all your dreams looked like utopia? Yeah. Yeah. That's a great pick. Okay. And there's part of me that's hoping.
What I was going to pick might be on your list, but that's just a pie in the sky. Thanks. Okay. Well, I'll tell you the three just that I'm going to choose from. Okay. That I narrowed it down to. Okay. I've thought Escape from New York, Children of Men, or Blade Runner. Well. My fourth was not on that list, actually. Okay. It was AI. That's good. But I thought maybe you'd go Kubrick. All right. So you said Blade Runner.
Escape from New York and Children Man, all good picks. Yes. What's your heart telling you? Hmm. I'm going to go with Escape from New York. Nice. Yeah. Very nice. Yeah. We went, and I mean this in a good way. We went pretty schlocky with this. Yeah, well, you know, Children of Men and Blade Runner, obviously, you could say masterpieces. And yeah, and AI, you might make that argument for. But when I was thinking just...
The listeners. Yeah. The fans. I was just thinking. Probably the more fun one for us to get our hands on would be a John Carpenter dystopia movie. So Escape from New York. This is fantastic. So let me just recap here. All right. We've got Total Recall, RoboCop, Rollerball, Minority Report, Demolition Man, and Escape from New York. Damn, those are awesome. Wow.
¶ Ordering Films by Narrative Time
Should we go in chronological? Probably, right? And of the, that they were released, not chronologically by the time period that the movies are based in. Are you sure? That could be pretty good. Do you want to do it? I think that'd be fun. Let's do a little research. Okay. Okay. Okay. You look up your films. I'll look up my films. Excellent. All right. And we'll do our best to talk during this. When does Total Recall. When does. Escape from New York take place. 2084 is total recall. 1997.
So are you making the list? So Escape from New York before Total Recall. Yeah. Now let's see when RoboCop. Rollerball. 2018. Oh. So some of these we've already lived. Okay. Oh. Original RoboCop is a near future. They're saying between late 91 and early 92. Wow. Okay. So I guess that's why in the original RoboCop, so many characters are saying, hey, let's go see the Prince of Tides later.
Yeah, that's right. Remember Rollerball? They just stop and all go see Rogue One. No, wait. That wasn't that year. Never mind. All right. Demolition Man is 2032. Okay. When is Minority Report? Let's see. I love this. Have we ever done this? I don't think so. It's fun, huh? When does Minority Report? This is confusing because... Demolition Man's set in the year 2032 with a prologue in 96, but then jumps ahead 36 years. I guess that's okay. Nevermind. Okay. So it's 25.
Which one is Demolition Man? 2032. Okay. Minority Report is 2054. Okay. So here would be the order if we do it this way, which I like. Me too. Okay. So we'd start with RoboCop. then escape from... No, no, sorry. Yes, RoboCop, then escape from New York, then Rollerball, then Demolition Man, then Minority Report, then Total Recall. Because what was Total Recall?
2084. Okay. Hey, I love that order. Let's do it, buddy. Okay. Oh, that's awesome. Two. This is great. Three, four, five, six. So just to recap. RoboCop happens first in our world. And then everything collapses. Detroit's hanging on. New Detroit. Then New York falls apart. We just travel a little more east from Detroit. Take one of the Great Lakes. And then we'll find out what happens and where in rollerball. I have no idea. Yes. Yes. And then Demolition Man.
Demolition Man. The Demolition Man. And then Minority Report, which is in DC, right? Yeah. And that means two cops in a row. We get to see how Sylvester Stallone does justice. And then we get to see old Tommy C. And not to mention we had RoboCop too. And then Total Recall. What city were they in? Did they ever say? I forget. That's all right. Is it like one of those like, oh, well, Demolition Man does a good one that's like San...
Oh, yes. Angeles or something. It is San Diego. San Diego and Los Angeles have been combined. Oh, that's right. So total recall. Well, we know it takes place on the planet of Mars. That's right. But where does it begin? Let's see. There's people who are recall heads who are just screaming right now. Obviously, it takes place in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Let's see. I'm looking up the plot in...
It just says, on earth, construction worker Douglas Quaid. I know, it was shot in Mexico City. Yes. Quaid. Quaid. It'll be interesting if all movies were obeying the own sci-fi Bible, we shouldn't see any technology that appears in one and is gone in another. No, exactly, exactly. And hopefully... we don't, before Minority Report, see any examples of pre-crime. Right. It's interesting that three of these movies are in the past to us and three are in the future. Ooh, very cool. I like that. Yeah.
¶ Discarded Picks and Genre Favorites
For those of you who don't know, previously when we've done chronological order movies, we kind of do it as a way to see how one informed the other and how the genre grew and changed over the years. Chronological by production. Yes, by production. With this, we're doing it because...
we really want to see as just lovers of science and fact. And history. And history to know what actually, how things have and will progress. Here's my... list that i had today i know this is like a touchy subject when people could hear something that they really wanted to hear covered on the podcast but just know hey there could be a dystopia now part two there's a lot of room so i had robocop
I had Total Recall, Rollerball, Logan's Run, but I watched that not too long ago and I love it, but Escape from New York I had on there, Gattaca, Fifth Element, Demolition Man, Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, Oblivion. Children of Men, Clockwork Orange, 12 Monkeys, AI, Civil War, The Island, V for Vendetta, and 28 Years Later. Those are all...
very cool. And a lot of those I had on my list, so I won't repeat the ones that you said. And real quick, my short list was the four I was going to choose if any of these got chosen. Logan's Run, Planet of the Apes, Fee for Vendetta, and Civil War. For me, the top contenders were Children of Men, Blade Runner, Planet of the Apes. And then...
But a whole Planet of the Apes series could be pretty cool too, dude. Oh, I'd do that because I've never seen those. Yeah, I've seen the first. Well, I've seen the first, yeah. And then I saw the remake. Right. And then I saw the new of the reboot ones, that first one.
where John Lithgow has Alzheimer's. Oh, yeah. Those ones are pretty good. Oh, that's right. There's that Tim Burton one. Yeah. Ooh, that could be fun. Hey, I saw it on opening night, baby. I think I did too. But other ones that were on my... Potential list is Waterworld, Snowpiercer, Upgrade, I've never seen. Oh, yeah. Dark City. Terminator would kind of be a stretch. It was on the list. Yeah. There's moments of dystopia. Well, and Skynet makes it dystopian. That's true. That's true.
Freejack, Starship Troopers. Yeah, those were the other ones. Wow, well, solid list here. But the Soylent Man, Soylent Man, Soylent Green Omega Man. And Planet of the Apes. Yeah. That's its own kind of Heston dystopia. Hestopia. Hestopia. That could be its own run, the Hestopia series.
¶ Reflecting on Chosen Dystopias
I'm a little surprised you chose what I would say the one, for lack of a better term, legit movie that isn't just kind of like popcorn. And that's Minority Report, even though it's a fun movie. But Escape from New York, Demolition Man, Robocop, Rollerball, and Total Recall were all just like movie movies. Yeah, they're not- They were like entertainment. You don't-
rub your beard in contemplation when you're watching this. No, you buy that for a dollar, even though RoboCop has been reappraised as quite a masterpiece. Without a doubt. Yeah, fascinating. Well, I'm very excited for these movies. These are all like really fun movies to watch. Yeah. And I've never seen Rollerball. So that's two for us. I've never seen Demolition Man either. Oh, I saw it at a slumber party in fifth grade.
I mean, any R-rated movie you see at the age of 12 with a group of friends at a sleepover, it's going to have a special place in your heart. I have to say, all I remember of that was Taco Bell was a big sponsor and I believe is featured in the movie somehow. Every restaurant is Taco Bell now. That's the line from the movie. Oh, that's right. And at early Bullock. We should get Taco Bell for that. That'd be fun. Yeah.
Sandra Bullock is in it too. Yeah. A pre-speed Bullock. Yeah. And I remember their cop costumes are kind of funny. Oh, it is so like. what the nineties thinks the future is going to be, which is the best. And it's right when I think the world is fully caught on that Harris. I mean, Sylvester Stallone is a bit of a joke, even though he of course hasn't. It was his, if I'm recalling Stallone's career, it was a bit of his maybe...
How many peaks and valleys has he had? I feel like it would be after the second valley, after the valley of like Stop or My Mom Will Shoot and Oscar. yeah then he had he ascended again with cliffhanger and demolition man so right um he's seen as a joke but he's um people are at least getting to see him from what they know him for which is like action yeah not um light comedy right um and then after that oh what is it the specialist oh
Yeah. I've seen that. And Assassins. Assassins Specialists. And then Judge Dredd always get mixed up with this movie too, which is also on the dystopian list. Yes, it is. I mean, I have a big... Big old soft spot for Stallone. Oh, I do too. I really love that guy. Is it Assassins? It is Assassins, right? That has the John Barry score that I am convinced.
was like a Bond score he didn't use and he just recycled it. Really? So Bond. Did he do Goldeneye? No. Because that's like the same year, so maybe he just... might have been and they'd be crazy to have turned down john berry because the eric sarah did GoldenEye, it's known to be the worst bond score of all time by a mile. They messed up. Yeah, it's horrible. Yeah. In fact, there's some listener, I forget his name and I apologize. who sent in an edit that they did using
I think Tomorrow Never Dies score for Goldeneye, and it makes a great film even better. Cool. Another person sent in, I don't have my computer with me, so forgive me if I'm not remembering names truly. A guy did an edit. of everything that happens from the end of Halloween 1978 that night using footage from Halloween Kills. halloween two and halloween one so remember the loomis recreation stuff they did so he put together this 15 minute thing
I'll try to remember to post a link about this. Cool. And it's just a 15 minute chronological thing of, from when the shape gets shot, falls down and gets up to where he gets arrested at the, in Halloween kills. When they show that footage of how he gets arrested and ends up in, is he back in Smith's Grove? I think. Yes. But before the different events of Halloween two begins, but there's still some Halloween two in there. Yeah. Yeah.
Did he go and kill the woman who's making the sandwich for her husband and stuff in the David Gordon Green version? No, but there's a very similar shot to that in the... the first Halloween of David Gordon Green. They kind of do a, like a take on that. Yeah. That's good. Uh, I mean, I want to see that, that Halloween, um, It kills recreation stuff. If that had been the whole movie, that would have been pretty cool. Yeah. That's why I just...
pray and hope and wish over and over again that AI will keep advancing so that they can eventually just do that. And then there's no technicians or craftspeople who are doing it themselves. What? That's how I feel. Well, this podcast, I guess, is ending today. No, the only A I like is Haley Joel Osment. I know. I know. that little teddy bear and Gigolo Joe what's his name is that right yeah is that his name yeah
All right, everybody. Hey, next year for Halloween, you go as Gigolo Joe and I'll go as Haley Joel Osment. Okay, sounds great. Just to recap, we'll begin December 5th.
¶ Episode Recap and Upcoming Content
