¶ Introduction to Wicked Wanderings
Oh man , why is it that we get better at talking ? But the greeting ? You know what it is . It's because , socially , a greeting happens when you haven't just been sitting here for six hours , and we've been sitting here for quite an amount of hours . So it's weird for me to be like hi , courtney , because you're already here . One that sounds forced .
Okay , hi , I'm Hannah and I'm Courtney . Join us as we delve into true crime , paranormal encounters and all things spooky . Grab your flashlight and get ready to wander into the darkness with us . This is Wicked Wanderings . Hi , hannah . Hi , courtney , I hear that you have a cult-themed version of trivia
¶ Cult Trivia Challenge Begins
to go along with your episode . So Hannah found this really cool quiz to do of infamous cults , and I have to admit that one you can't see the questions like until you answer the first one . So that's not a thing , but just looking at the first one , I'm like shit , I know . Great . So you can ask me the first one and this is good .
We're gonna go back and forth this time , so I don't feel so bad about myself , but we can both answer our own Because it has three multiple choice . I like the multiple choice . Multiple choice is a new thing we're trying here . Alright , here we go . You ready , courtney ? I am sort of ready .
What is the name of the cult that believes humans were created by aliens Called Elohim who pretended to be angels when they appeared in the past ? I'm going to go with realism , go ahead . Yay , I was right , I said Heaven's Gate . Wow .
So realism began in the 1970s and is often associated with claims that they can clone humans and an attitude of very liberal sexuality . Damn it All . Right , cora , go right , go ahead , okay .
So question number two the brethren founded by jimmy t roberts disallows members from using modern conveniences and forbids children from speaking , looking at members of the opposite sex or playing playing correct . The brethren believe all celebration should be saved for the imminent return of jesus christ , which has been imminent since the 1970s . So the kids can't play .
I see , and this is my problem , I'm like what constitutes as playing ? Like what childhood activities constitutes as playing ? That seems very vague . Yeah , I feel like how do you control something that isn't ? It's the , it's the aba and me , the operational definition like playing includes or does not include .
Oh yeah , because to me , reading a book doesn't count as playing , but it could . Watching television in today's age , I would not count as playing . I have a lot of questions . Okay , go ahead . Which cult is known for its mass weddings , with hundreds of couples married simultaneously in huge ceremonies ? I was wrong . Let's go ahead . What'd you pick ?
I am gonna go with the unification church , which is correct . Members of the unification church are sometimes called moonies because of their association with founder sun myung moon . I did the sign of the moon , which I was wrong . That was an interesting one . I can honestly say I didn't know anything about that before reading that question .
Next , yes , what did the movement for the restoration of the Ten Commandments of God predict would happen on March 17 , 2000 ? Hmm , let's see , because I just did an episode on this . Guys , the Virgin Mary would come to Earth and carry the cult's members to Heaven . Woo , if you listened to last week's episode , you would know .
Make sure Rob does that , because that would help . Yes , when mary did not arrive , the cult leaders caused explosions and fires that kill hundreds of cult members . We learned about her guys just saying there's a quiz .
After what is it called when the loved ones of a cult member arranged to have that person kidnapped away from the cult and retrained for cult free life ? I know , this one got it deprogramming . Yep , that's what I got .
Deprogramming is a controversial activity that isn't always successful and that is deprogramming them of what they've learned to believe in , what they were trained on . Which cult engaged in a practice of recruiting new members by sending women members out to have sex with them , something they called quote , and here I am quoting flirty fishing .
Oh God , I got it wrong . I got it right . Okay , go ahead , girl . My guess was the Children of God , which was correct . The Children of God ran into trouble both because of sexually transmitted diseases and for their publications , which promoted child adult sexual activity . I said Evansgate , so I'm glad you got it right . Oh , gross .
And the next one is the People's Temple Massacre . Occurred in what South American nation ? I got that one right . Go ahead Guyana , guyana , guyana . I know right , the People's Temple commun . Ahead , guyana , guyana , guyana . I think that's right . The People's Temple commune in Guyana , called Jonestown , was the site of the massacre .
How many people died in the People's Temple Jonestown massacre ? This is going to be a tricky one . All right , I got it . I got it wrong . All right , so I got it right 918 people died , the worst cult-based massacre in US history . To be fair , I guessed 1,212 , which was also close , worst , but close , yeah .
What cyanide-laced substance was given to the people's temple members to facilitate the Jonestown Massacre ? Is that right ? Obviously , grape Kool-Aid . The incident gave rise to the phrase . Drinking the kool-aid often used to mean believing in something because someone told you to , that's good .
Leo ryan was shot by people's temple guards while attempting to investigate jonestown . What government position did he hold ? Oh , I have to reread that one for myself . Hang on , I got it wrong , congressman . Congressman Ryan is the only member of the House of Representatives to be assassinated while in office . I had guessed US Ambassador of Guyana .
What did the AM Shinrikyo cult use to attack the Tokyo subway system in 1995 ? Oh my god . Oh my God . I knew this one . Go for it . Syringas . And that attack killed 13 people . What does om syringo mean when translated into English ? I got it . I got it wrong . Oh , I got it . I got it wrong . I got Supreme Truth .
Translation is tricky , since the cult's founder combined since Crete and Japanese to create the name , but Supreme Truth is a generally accepted translation . Okay , cults preoccupied with preparing for the end of the world are often known as I knew this one , go for it .
Doomsday cultists sometimes believe only they will be spared in the coming apocalypse , but cults have also committed mass suicide when they thought the world would end . What federal agency conducted the final assault on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco , texas , in 1983 ? I don't know this one , I have to guess . Oh my gosh , I would not have expected that .
I got it wrong , me too , surprisingly . So can I say yeah , so it was the FBI . I guessed Homeland Security . Although the initial ran the Branch of Indian , was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol , tobacco , firearms , explosives , the final assault , which set the compound on fire , was conducted by the FBI . See , that's why I was looking for the ATF .
Okay , that makes sense . Who was the leader of the Branch Davidian cult ? I don't know this one Really . I guessed it correctly , though . David Koresh man , who was born Vernon Howell , took over the cult in the 1980s . I didn't think I would ever get that one right with you . I thought you knew
¶ Testing Knowledge on Infamous Cults
which terrorist attack was conducted in the anniversary of and inspired by the branch davidian waco raid . Got it , I was between two and it was the second one , not the one I chose . Was it wrong ? Oklahoma city bombing , which I didn't know what you do call mine .
Yeah , yeah , I knew it wasn't the world Trade Center bombing , no , so Oklahoma City bombing was the correct answer . And the Oklahoma City bombing targeted a building that housed federal agencies as revenge for the Waco incident . I didn't know that . I didn't know that at all either . Actually Interesting .
Okay , what doomsday cult believed they were descended from the Knights Templar and died in a series of mass murder slash suicides in the 1990s ? Got it ? I'm guessing ? Okay , did you guess blindly on this one ? I did , but I got it right . I didn't get it right . Okay , you're going to go . Yeah , go ahead . Order of the Solar Temple .
The Solar Temple's members believed their leader was Christ , that they go to another planet when they died . What'd you guess ? By the way , I guessed Order of the Solar Temple . Oh , no , it has to be Faithists . Okay , you're like . Then you guessed right . You guessed right . All right , go ahead .
What phrase did Charles Manson use to describe the apocalyptic race war he foresaw ? You got this girl . Helter Skelter . Manson took the phrase from the beatles song . Helter skelter , one of the cultists , wrote it in blood at one of the murder scenes . Poor beatles , I know how they got roped into that .
I'll never understand what actress was among those murdered by the manson family . Duh , it's sharon tate . I would have known that without the three . Tate was nine months pregnant at the time that she was killed . I said grace kelly , why did I do that ? I'm not really sure .
All right , well , the heavens gate cult committed suicide , believing they'd be transported onto a spaceship traveling behind what comet in 1997 ? I got that one wrong . I did too . So I had guessed hayley's comet . I did too . And then the answer is the hail bop .
Okay , the astronomers that hail bop is named after probably wish the comet had become famous for some other reason , probably . What notable footwear were the heavenscape cultists all wearing when they killed themselves ? I got that one wrong . I got the wrong too . What did you guess ? The birkenstocks . Me too . I just seemed really culty .
But the answer was brand new nike sneakers . The nike sneakers were a strange detail of the mass suicide scene that the media focused on at the time . Well , well , it should have been birkenstocks . It should have been birkenstocks , just see . You know , the jesus sandals . Right , that's what had me . Oh my god .
What did the rajneesh firm cool do in oregon in 1985 ? Oh my gosh , some of these answers are . The answers here are they sent letter bombs to county committee members , they poisoned salad bars with salmonella and they tried to build a nuclear fission reactor . Oh my gosh , I would have never guessed that . What'd you get ?
I put they sent letter bombs to county committee members Because they tried to build a nuclear fission reactor . The answer was they poisoned salad bars with salmonella . The salmonella poisoning was part of a bizarre scheme to gain control of county government . Wah , wah . Next , what other method did the rashi sperm cult use to try to win county elections ?
God , I don't think this cult and I were aligned mentally because I didn't get that one right either . All right , so the answer I didn't do it yet . I'm giving them the options . Oh , okay , the answer options are they threatened county election officials who counted the ballots .
They registered to vote dozens of times each using fake identities , and they invented thousands of homeless people to move to their city . Okay , go ahead . What did you guess ? To vote dozens of times each using fake identities . Same , it just felt like it checked out . But the correct answer was they invited thousands of homeless people to move to their city .
Seems kind of like humanitarian of them , which is why I was not expecting that one . The cult hoped the homeless people would pack ballot boxes in their favor . Did we mention that it was a bizarre scheme ? All right , jay-z knight , founder of the ramtha school , claims to channel the thoughts of a being . Who is how old ?
I guessed 100 years , because 35 000 just seemed too far-fetched for me . But apparently 35 000 years . I didn't get that . So night channels , a 35 000 year old ascended being named ramtha seems a little far-fetched for me , but okay , I agree . The town of yerba buena in northern mexico was home to a cult in the 1960s , led by a former prostitute .
Go for her . Who did what to those who tried to leave the cult ? Okay , killed them and drained their blood in a ritual , had sex with them to convince them their life in the cult would be better , or cut out their tongues so they couldn't tell anyone about the cult . I feel like this is a trick . It really is . I got it wrong me too .
What one did you guess cut out their tongues ? I said , had sex with them ? Okay , the answer was killed them and drank their blood in a ritual . Magdalena solis possibly suffered from delusions that she was a reincarnated inkin goddess and needed to drink blood to maintain her immort may go for her .
Okay , thelema was a cult created by what notorious English occultist ? I got that one wrong . Get out of town . No , you did not . Courtney , I sure did . Okay , well , I got Alistair Crowley . Please tell me it was Margaret at least . No , I guessed Ozzie . No , you did not . Poor Ozzie , I was poor . You haven't fed me all day . True , this is a cult .
Crowley was once described as the weakest man in the world . The establishment of a caliphate and an apocalyptic battle in the Middle East are the goals of the terrorist group known as ISIS . Wrong , no , isis is correct . No , I said Hamas , I'm sorry .
While other Islamic terrorist groups have political goals alongside their religious aims , isis cult-like goals are primarily based on a religious prophecy my turn or your turn . It's your turn , okay . A far right cult active in the US in the 1970s
¶ Major Cult Leaders and Ideologies
and 80s that advocated white supremacy was called the Covenant , covenant , the sword and the blank . I got it wrong , me too . What did you guess ? A flame . I guessed righteous path . It apparently was arm of the lord and the covenant . The sword and the arm of the lord fell apart after a peaceful fbi standoff ended with the leaders being arrested .
Well , sounds like such a lame name . It is Adolfo Constanzo . That's a great name . Leader of a cult in Mexico in the 1980s that was popular with drug cartels , kidnapped and murdered 15 people . For what purpose ? I got it right , me too . He used various body parts to cast dark magic spells .
Constanzo's reputation as a black magician and spellcaster was reinforced by the grisly body parts , including brains and spines , that he extracted from his victims . I like him Interesting . I like the idea of him . I like it . The Church of Satan , here we go , people found in 1966 has a notable relationship with Satan . What is it ? And here we go .
They believe each member of the cult is a child of Satan . They believe their high priest is Satan born in human form , or they don't actually believe the supernatural being called Satan exists ? I know the answer . Okay , go ahead . They don't actually believe that a supernatural being called satan exists .
The church of satan doesn't worship a literal demonic entity called satan , which I think is really important to understand , because a lot of people , I feel like , have the wrong idea that the house of god is worshiping a god and the house of satan worships . You know satan as this demonic . What'd you get ? Oh , I didn't look at the score at the bottom .
Is there a score ? Yeah , please hold 14 out of 30 , me too . We tied , we both got 14 out of 30 . We didn't do too bad then . That's kind of . I mean to be fair , we've only ever covered one cult , yeah .
So really we've only done one call in the time of wicked wanderings , and I think when we've talked about cults before , we've only done one call in the time of wicked wanderings , and I think when we've talked about cults before , we really only knew , like charles manson , I mean , come on , that one's kind of obvious .
And then we learned about one today who sadly didn't make an appearance . Really that much one , one but one . I was surprised by the one but 30 questions . I mean , how many cults exist ? That's a great . We should look like mother God wasn't in there . Mother God , I thought , was a cult . I feel like we might need to find more cult-like questions .
The Davidians , obviously , the Waco there were a lot in there . I mean they did comprehensively cover a lot . It wasn't like some of the other trivia that I've seen , where they pick like one thing and then they ask you 16 or 17 questions about just one where you're like okay , come on , that was a good one , hannah . Thanks , court .
I feel like we took a pre-quiz , for if we're going to learn a little bit and then take a post-quiz , I love that . Just a little bit of ABA strategy for everybody else . I love that
¶ Final Trivia Scores and Reflections
. Now we need to take pictures of the books I've used before so we can have from our Instagram , which has been revamped Because Courtney's worked hard on it . It's up and alive . Interact with us . Tag us in posts . You know , come on , don't make me sound like a clingy ex-girlfriend here again , please .
It's like week 672 of me sitting here begging for someone to interact with me . Just a hi , hello , what's up ? Because we know people like us . That's the thing . I know people like our content . I thought I need them to like us publicly yes , please . Or share us to your story , anything .
I'd love to see a share notification that isn't just Hannah's bookcase For real Not that I don't appreciate Hannahannah's bookcase no , for real and all of its sharing as well .
But if there's content that you'd like to see that we're not putting out there I know we've said it a bunch of times , but we really are feedback driven people , we're used to it we can take it . If there's something we do that you're like , oh , gag me , stop doing that um , let us know . We want to know .
We want to make it what feels good for everybody and I am going to do a , pick a card , any card . I can't do a card in a while . So let's see who we pick . Do the hot fingers ? Hot fingers , hot fingers . I am going to
¶ Missing Persons Card and Case Discussion
let Kenzie Do . You want to pick a card ? She picked one , she did , she did , she nudged this one . Okay , so Kenzie's card is a 10 of hearts . Jamel Williams . On December 12th 2014 , the victim was picked up by associates in Dorchester and traveled , for an unknown reason , to Randolph . The victim was shot outside on Canavan Drive in Randolph .
If you have any information about this case , please call 1-855-MASOLVE . December 12th 2014 . I want to know what the date range on these cards is , because I feel like some are so far ago and then some , like this , are really . I mean , I'm dating myself when I say 2014 was recently . Oh , 11 . Oh , my god , don't do that . You just broke my soul .
Oh , my god , that's disgusting that no one solved it . I know , I mean , dorchester is kind of a rough Dorchester . Dorchester , I don't know , doesn't sound like anybody we know . No , we want to do those cards , but it's so depressing it is , it is . I mean , maybe there's some other type of card we can look into .
But I do hope that at this point , you know , maybe people will know something or at the very least they'll spread the card around . I will post it to social media . On our story , I wonder if Rob at the end of the year should do like a blooper reel of us , like one whole episode . That's just us verbally stimming our brains out , like I sharted my pants .
Oh , don't put that in . I don't think anybody's ever said that on the podcast , but I do think it would be funny to hear all of the things he clips out of like random ass stuff , like when you're in the bathroom and I'm singing the bathroom song just at the top of my lungs .
She doesn't allow me to listen to her in the bathroom , so let's do other shit .
I mean , sometimes you got to do what you got to do , but I do think that looking up the cards and figuring out , kind of , where these people are and thinking about them , because I have to believe in my heart that something , something gets updated , that the cards being out there , and especially for the cases that aren't the top media cases there's several in
our area . I won't mention them for respect to the families , but they get tons of media coverage because they're in your face and because they have connections or whatever , and that doesn doesn't make those family members any more valued than the other family members .
Really , honestly , race comes into mind , it does , and the member that I'm holding here in my hand is an African-American male , yeah , and so I'm sure that his case has been based off of where he lived and his race pushed to the side , but I do want to start posting pictures of the cars . I love it . The more coverage the better .
That's kind of the way that I'm looking at it . So yeah , wanderers , that was an interesting trivia . I feel like Hannah and I are getting a little better at trivia . I mean , maybe not , but we try . We tied , which makes me feel a little bit .
I don't know if that should be a good benchmark for Hannah , but I feel really good about the fact that we tied , because I've been really bad the last few times we've done it . I know Mark has been yelling at me . I know Lynn from Springfield has been yelling at me answers . So hopefully this time we did a little better . We did a little better .
All right , thank you , wanderers , thanks Hannah . That was a really great follow-up to your cult episode , I'm glad . Bye , wanderers , bye . Thanks for listening today . Wicked Wanderings is hosted by me , hannah , and co-hosted
