In the 1990s, China’s poorest communities could make good money by selling their blood to government plasma stations. When Dr. Shuping Wang discovered these stations were the source of a Hepatitis C epidemic, she thought things couldn’t get any worse. But then she realized the blood banks were spreading an even deadlier virus to the country’s poorest people. When she spoke up, she paid dearly.
