Episode description

In this festive installment of 3-Minute Bartender, we’re trading stars and stripes for a splash of green with a bold, Irish-inspired cocktail: the Shamrock Sour. Sure, it sounds like a St. Paddy’s Day special, but Dan makes the case for celebrating America’s birthday with a nod to the 33 million proud Irish-Americans who helped build (and booze up) this country.

Dan mixes up a modern riff on the classic whiskey sour using Egan’s Irish Whiskey—his go-to—plus lemon, simple syrup, a touch of green (crème de menthe or food coloring, your call), and the optional egg white for that silky, firework-worthy finish. It’s smooth, citrusy, and just gimmicky enough to make your backyard BBQ guests raise a brow and a glass.

Along the way, you’ll get a quick history lesson (spoiler: St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish), some charming Irish trivia, and a few groan-worthy jokes that’ll make you laugh in spite of yourself. So grab a coupe, shake it like a Roman candle, and get ready to toast freedom with a drink that’s proudly Irish—and just American enough to crash the 4th of July party. Sláinte!

[SPEAKER_00]: Today we're shaking up a cocktail that's green, bold, and proudly Irish. [SPEAKER_00]: And we're airing it just in time for America's birthday.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's called the Shamrock Sour. [SPEAKER_00]: And despite the name, please know that no actual green clovers were harmed in the making of this drink. [SPEAKER_00]: Now I know what you're thinking. [SPEAKER_00]: A Shamrock Sour for the Fourth of July. [SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that a St. [SPEAKER_00]: Patty's Day thing? [SPEAKER_00]: Danny Boy. [SPEAKER_00]: Have you lost the plot? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, probably. [SPEAKER_00]: But in this case, I actually kind of know what I'm doing.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're flying the red white and green today as a nod to all the proud Irish Americans out there. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you're truly, did you know over thirty three million Americans claim Irish ancestry? [SPEAKER_00]: That's more than seven times the population of Ireland. [SPEAKER_00]: We're everywhere. [SPEAKER_00]: We help build this country and we definitely help stock its bars. [SPEAKER_00]: The Shamrock Sour is a modern riff, the classic whiskey sour.

[SPEAKER_00]: A drink that stood to test the time. [SPEAKER_00]: The original dates back to the eighteen sixties when sailors used citrus to fend off scurvy, and whiskey to fend off caring about scurvy. [SPEAKER_00]: This version doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, it just adds a little brug and a splash of hemrodial to the mix. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna stop doing that, I promise.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no centuries old legend behind it, no leprechauns, just dealing in green grass, huts, just created bartenders looking for a way to bring a little Irish charm to the glass. [SPEAKER_00]: Done right, it's crisp, refreshing, and celebratory without being gimmicky. [SPEAKER_00]: Not to tradition with just enough personality to stand out at the party. [SPEAKER_00]: Or in this case, the Fourth of July barbecued. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's what you need to make a shamrock sour.

[SPEAKER_00]: Two ounces of eagons Irish whiskey. [SPEAKER_00]: Why eagons? [SPEAKER_00]: Because it's phenomenal. [SPEAKER_00]: It's what I use. [SPEAKER_00]: And let's be honest. [SPEAKER_00]: It's my show. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm good enough. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm smart enough, and dog on it, people like me. [SPEAKER_00]: Three-quarters of an ounce of fresh lemon juice, half an ounce of simple syrup, one egg white. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, it's optional, but it's a pro move.

[SPEAKER_00]: And a quarter ounce green creme de menth, or a dash of green food coloring if you're phoning it in. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm also gonna need ice, a coupe or rocks glass. [SPEAKER_00]: And garnish, you could do a mint sprig, lime wedge, whatever makes it pop. [SPEAKER_00]: Hell, you can even use a real shamrock as a garnish. [SPEAKER_00]: Just don't eat that thing. [SPEAKER_00]: They look pretty, but tastes like ours. [SPEAKER_00]: Now to make it, gonna dry shake everything.

[SPEAKER_00]: That means no ice. [SPEAKER_00]: To get that nice velvety foam going. [SPEAKER_00]: Then you're gonna add some ice and shake it like the fireworks just started. [SPEAKER_00]: Once it's served up, you'll find strain it into the chilled coupe glass. [SPEAKER_00]: You want it on the rocks? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, you're smart enough to figure that out. [SPEAKER_00]: Garnish it, admire it, then drink it.

[SPEAKER_00]: You'll find it smooth and citrusy and a little herbal if you went the Crem Dementh route I recommended. [SPEAKER_00]: This drink just hits all the right notes. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, here's a fun fact. [SPEAKER_00]: Shamrock comes from the Irish Shamroog, meaning little clover, used by St. [SPEAKER_00]: Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity, which I now interpret to mean whiskey, lemon and sugar. [SPEAKER_00]: Another fun fact, St. [SPEAKER_00]: Patrick wasn't even Irish.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was British. [SPEAKER_00]: It was kidnapped and enslaved and brought to Ireland. [SPEAKER_00]: And then hundreds of years later, the Irish made a mistake. [SPEAKER_00]: Which is a pretty solid apology? [SPEAKER_00]: All things considered? [SPEAKER_00]: Now, of course, wouldn't be a proper episode of three-minute bartender without a few terrible but lovable jokes to send you off on your way. [SPEAKER_00]: No! [SPEAKER_00]: God, please, no! [SPEAKER_00]: No! [SPEAKER_00]: No!

[SPEAKER_00]: What's Irish and sits outside all day and night? [SPEAKER_00]: patio furniture. [SPEAKER_00]: Oof. [SPEAKER_00]: What do you call an Irishman who bounces off the walls? [SPEAKER_00]: Rick O'Shea. [SPEAKER_00]: Huh? [SPEAKER_00]: Come on, a little better. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, one more. [SPEAKER_00]: Why are there only a handful of Irish lawyers in London? [SPEAKER_00]: Because only a few of them could pass the bar. [SPEAKER_00]: get it. [SPEAKER_00]: They got to go into the bar.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: I invite you to follow me on the Instagram at the imbiber. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm also on blue sky at the imbiber. [SPEAKER_00]: The podcast has its own Instagram account. [SPEAKER_00]: It's called WWD underscore podcast. [SPEAKER_00]: And until next time, top of the morning to you.
