All right. 3, 2, 1. Let's get it. Welcome back to what's your problem? The podcast. I'm your host marsh bison today. I got three questions. I want you to not only ask yourself, but also you need. Sit down and. Our do it on the run. Whatever drive down the road. Whatever it is, man. You need to not only ask yourself these questions, but also how do you answer them? And. This is going to help you for those who are. Thinking about switching.

Switching careers getting into her career, but also in your creatives too. And I'm going to unpack both of these because. I think they are both, uh, super important. So let's start off with number one to three. The questions. And then also we'll, we'll kick it off. Off with career and how you should choose a career. And based on how you answer these. Questions is going to. To determine. You know, with. Maybe it's not the right time for. You to get into. To that career. Based on how you answer.

Cause I think a lot of times. What we do is, is we. We kind of only look at the good side of things where we sell ourselves on. Why this is a great decision. And we really haven't given it. More well-rounded thought. And it's not like you just got to get into this. Huge deliberation process with, with yourself, because I believe sometimes you just got to take the leap. But also just, uh, you know, keeping things simple. If you just ask a. A few simple questions. And kind of.

Spit this out, talk it out. I'm big on not only writing. It out. But also speaking it out. I just something that's, that's just really good for me. So. Uh, if you happen to ever see. See me at the red light and you see that I'm talking that's, what's good about. Bluetooth speakers. Seekers now people. Think that I'm on the foam. Foam when I'm actually, I'm just talking to myself. So I like to talk things. Out loud. I did it yesterday when I went running. I instead of taking the headphones with.

Me. I had no headphones. Phones and I. I just was talking. So there were people that were working in the yard, so I'll be running by. Not very Fastly, but it's all me running by. And, you know, I. I was talking out loud. But this is how I just kind of worked things through whatever works for you. But let's jump into it. So the three questions that you should ask. Ask yourself is, do you love. Love it. Are you good at. It. And will they pay you for it? Simple enough.

You've probably heard these before. But let's really just unpack this a little bit. So number one, do you love it? Let's look at the career side of it. Do you love it? Maybe you don't know. If you love this chosen career yet or not, I get it. But what you have to do is, is you have to ask yourself, What intrigues you. About the career that you're interested in. And. And it can't be all driven by money now. I'm not saying money's not important, but. I can tell you this, you will quickly flame.

Flame out if a. You come in. In for the money. And it's not there. or B. Um, you. You get. Get in it and you. Absolutely love it yet. Yet you're always having. Having hit your mom. Mom and dad up. Because you can't pay your rent. So. So security is important from a monetary. Standpoint. Can. You pay your. Your bills not can you ball? Out of control, but can you pay. Your bills. Without having to depend on. Anybody, you got to have that. That. Independent. So, you know, not everybody's.

Just going to. Uh, flow to. Tuition's to you, uh, and Support you while you're struggling. Plus when you're struggling. I do believe in the Sacra. Sacrifice. I do believe in productive struggle. We'll be a whole nother episode. So. So I do think you should strain. But also. Also when you're working. Working towards something, but you've got. To be able to make ends meet also. So do you love it? The money aspect is important, but there's gotta be some subs. Subsections to it too.

So what, what intrigues you? What fascinates. At you. About this career and the reason why. I say that is because. From a monetary standpoint. Point there are going to be. Storms there. We're going to be clouds. There are going to be disruption. there could be layoffs or it could be. The economic shifts, they're gonna be all kinds of different things. So if you haven't really. Talked about. About or Find what really fascinates you. Say for instance, if you were super wealthy, Would you still.

We'll do this. You know, if you didn't. Have to worry about money. But, you know, I, what, what act. Absolutely fascinates you. You or intrigues you or piques your curiosity? about this business. See for me. I chose sales 27 years ago. Did I love sales. When I got into it. I didn't. know I read a book. The secret of closing sales. And in my current situation, I was working at a casino. As a supervisor. And I was making $28500 a year.

So I. I was like, and, and, and so for me, I had a five-year old. Son at home that I was raising. All my own. And so it was like, for me, I was like, There's gotta be something bigger and better for me. I mean, where does this road? Lead. And I didn't see that this. This road led to something 20 years down the line. I be. Just jumping from casino to casino. I didn't see that. For me, that just wasn't my bag. So. What interested me in. And sales. Was the freedom. To not only. Create my own.

I own money. There was no ceiling. Uh, as far as what I could get paid. And I get. It was a very. Very low barrier. You know, basically. Really, if I was. Breathing. And I looked good. Then I could get a job in. And sales. And the rest of it. Self-education. I didn't have to go. And get 900. Hundred hours of some. Sort of, cause I was broke. So I didn't have to go pay for any. The formal training. The training was just self-education and sheer experience. That's what it was.

And I was given a binder. That was like six inches thick. And pointed. Pointed to a meeting room and said, go learn. Good luck. And. That was it. And so I just, I took that. I was, I was, I was intrigued and fascinated that it. It wasn't the same grind day in and day out. And there was unlimited. Opportunity. Not. Only from a position standpoint, but also I could make money doing it. And. And I liked the aspect. Aspect that it wasn't the same grime. Grind. I thought it was pretty cool.

Nice cars, brand new cars. Cars. I get to sell vehicles that I couldn't. And afford yet. And I. And, and I get to. Negotiate. Hell. Well, let's try it. So do you love it? That's the thing, man, that. That you've got to ask yourself. Or is it something that if. You're not quite sure if you love. Love it. Does it fascinate? does it. Pique your curiosity second. Second question are. Are you good at it? Are you good at it? Now it's not. That you're going to walk in. And be an instant success.

No one is. But. Can you incrementally make improvements? And if so, how, this is important that you got to ask yourself on this. So. First take stock in. Skills and talents that you already possess. So. What traits. Do you already possess? That are well-suited. For the career. That you're interested in. Really important. So, what do you already have? And then what can be developed? As like a Snap-on right. It's an accompaniment. With the skills that you already have.

This is why I say when you're young. You should try all kinds of different jobs. Just try him. I mean, you you're, you're living at home. You probably got no bills. Or very little. And so this is your prime opportunity to try some different stuff. And it's not that it's going to lead necessarily to this lifetime profession. It may, but also when you're young, you get to assimilate all kinds of different skills. And so you're going to find that when you start choosing careers, a, do you love it?

B are you good at it that some of the previous jobs that you've had. The skillset that you developed in those jobs? Now you can leverage those skillsets. Into this new career that you're thinking about getting into. So for me, I was able to leverage a few different skills. Number one. I could tell a good story. I was all, I've just always been that way. Like I. My brothers were older than me. So a lot of times I just, I was alone. I had to play by myself.

So I created stories as a kid and I would dream those stories up and I would be at my desk and, you know, I was just, I was just a good storyteller. And, and so that, that is actually a. A good skillset. So I was good at storytelling because selling is telling a story. It's telling that story, weaving it in with your product and what their needs are. And how can you tell the story better? How can you shape that story? I love that. I thought it was really cool. So a, I was good at storytelling.

Good enough to hold my own. B I was. I come from a collegiate background. So I played football in college. I had a full scholarship was an all American. And we had, we were really good. And when you're really good, that means that you get into playoffs. That means that you're gunning for the playoffs. and you get into these fourth quarter high pressure situations. Everything's on the line. Everything's on this one, play. And we made it and we did things.

And so I learned through my collegiate career, how to handle that pressure and not cave under pressure and actually Excel. That's a good thing in sales. So I was able to storytell. Bring that high pressure skillset I could handle that I could handle the end of the month. This is the last deal of the month and we have to make this deal to meet our quota. Because there were thousands of dollars on the line and compensation from the manufacturer, but we got to hit it. That worked well for me.

And then the third aspect is I was good at reading body language. See, I was coming from a casino background. I've worked in surveillance. So surveillance. has no sound. All it is, is a bunch of screens. And you're looking at body language and looking at different ticks and things that just. The pattern disruption. That's what you're looking for. What is what's going on? Or what's a repeated pattern that just doesn't align with everything else.

So I got really good at reading body language because I had no sound. And so those three skills that I got from other places in life. Now I could apply those in sales. Great. So I could not only bring those skills, but also I could leverage, I could leverage those skills and then I could amplify those skills and then bring on more skill sets along the way that's important. So are you good at it? And can you incrementally improve and how. And then the last one, will they pay you for it?

Is this key. So, let me preface this by saying. Fast money. Equals short term. Slow money. Equals long-term. If you want the fast money, it ain't gonna last long. I'll leave it at that. If you want. Long money. Then it's going to build slow. But as it builds. You're building skillsets. And traits and talents. Along the way. Don't expect. To make this. shoebox ceiling money, man, if you walk in. Trying to get to the ceiling. That's it. That's all you're going to get.

I prefer, and it's a long slog. But I prefer for you to walk in where it's slow money. You might even have to take a little bit of a pay cut. But if it incrementally improves, And is heading towards something. And you love it. You can incrementally improve. You can leverage the skills that you already have. And this thing builds. And we'll set you up longterm, slow money. Long-term. Then by all means, do it again. You have to be able to. You have to. be able to make.

Uh, enough money to pay your bills, because if you're behind the eight ball, every single time you're going to get in this desperate situation. And this is when you're just going to go chase some other money. This is what happens with people. They get in these tough situations and then they just start chasing the fast money. But the fast money does it is short term. It's going to dry up. Let's see it all the time. And so if you can, this is a great opportunity for you to. Slow money.

Long-term fast money short term, stay away from that, even though your friends are doing it. Stay away from it. If you chase money, it's never going to be enough. But if you chase skills, You'll have more than enough. It's funny how that works. Now let's flip to the creative side look, let me tell you something. You all are so creative. You just, you don't realize it. There's a creative outlet. Within you. R R or maybe you do it. you. just kind of dabble in it, man. These three questions.

Ask yourself on those. And you need to do that. You need that outlet beside just a profession. So for me, my creative outlet. Is podcasting. I started the podcast in 2017 at the very worst time in my life, I was at the bottom wrong. I was demoted. I was broke. I was bankrupt. Borderline suicidal, like just a, I was just in a tough spot. But I loved. Podcast. And I'll always wanted to start a Podcast. So at that time I was at the bottom rung. I said, fuck it.

I got nothing to lose and everything to gain. So I started a podcast. It was free. Always start with free. So do I love it? Absolutely. I loved. I loved. creating podcast. Or creating thoughts. Here's what I was good at. Here's what I'm good at. I guess that goes to my second point, but let me just bleed these two together. So. I love the aspect of being able to I'm really good at being able to grab a book. And, and something triggers in my soul and say, oh, I could talk about this. I got it.

I understand this, this is what it means to me. And I could hear it in a podcast and run with that thought and it may be totally different than how they intended. How they published it. Even in books. This idea for this episode came from it just triggered in a book. And I was like, oh my God. That's important for career and creative. And I need to share this. And get this word out to people who were thinking about a certain career or who have maybe let their.

Creative juices just kind of die out. Don't do that. They got to come back alive. This is why I'm I'm I'm adding this to this episode. Because the career aspect of it. Do you love it is super important by all means. If you love it, do it. And then are you good at it? So, what are you good at specifically? How can you do it? So for me, I'm good at, I could take something that I read in 15 minutes. And then I can create a story out of that. And a meaning out of that.

This is what this is literally. This is what this is. So, and I've gotten, gotten good at it. I can incrementally improve. I'll never. The communication level. I'll I'll never. I'll never. arrive. It's always evolving. And so the way I thought, the way I wrote the way I communicated. You know, Just, it has evolved over time. And I've gotten better over time. And what's really good about this. Just as a side benefit. Is a learn how to communicate. Both in front of people, but also on camera.

Uh, learn how to think and speak. And, and because I do this so often. It has helped me immensely and sales. But also everything that I've learned in sales. Has benefited me. In the podcasting. I'm very fortunate that my creative energies. Overlap. My professional endeavors. So the creative aspect, I get to use that in sales, the cure. Eh, they embrace all five CS communication, curiosity, creativity, continuous learning, and action, productive confrontation.

And so I developed that while creating the podcast. But it was by asking what makes sales professionals. Good. How are they good at what they do? Those five things, communication, curiosity, creativity, continuous learning, and action. Productive confrontation. That's why the podcast started off as the sales life, because the skills you learn in sales also could be leveraged in life. And what you learn in life can be leveraged in sales. That's how I came about that. So I'm very fortunate.

And you could be too, that you could leverage those things. Really it's a beautiful life when you can overlap those two things. both professionally. And Anne. Uh, creatively. So I'm able to actually, it's this ecosystem that I have, and I'm able to work in that. All the time. Every day. And so I'm able to get better and better and better at, so are you good at it? And then the, and can you incrementally grow and how. The way I do that is through the reps writing every single day.

Recording every single day, sharing something every single day. And then lastly, will they pay you for it? I did not start this podcast to make a bunch of money. Will they pay you for it? Absolutely. Absolutely. And so, but that is not my main driver. The compensation that I receive. Is. So much more, it's more intrinsic. It's inside. Because it helps me think better. Think clearer. Break things down quicker. Communicate. Quickly, decisively. Accurately. And creatively.

And, and so again, it's just this ecosystem. That I stumbled in. I didn't, I didn't, You know, I didn't. see this coming. This is why you got to try stuff. But. Will they will, they pay me for absolutely. But. also I'm paid. In non man monetary aspects too, because it has helped me in every area of my life. And so this is just a lifetime commitment. I just, I pinch myself every morning. Cause I'm like, my God. I'm so blessed. To be able to literally do what I love. I love sales.

I love communicating. I love podcasting. I get to do both. The barrier for entry. Is non-existent. It's just, what do I want to do? What do I want to contribute to? It's so important. It's important for me. Hopefully it's important to you. So both in your career professionally. But also creatively. I want you to ask yourself these three questions. And see how the unpack, let me know if I can help you. How did it, how did this episode translate to you? What did it help you accomplish?

Do I love it. Am I good at it. Will they pay me for it? Answer those three questions. Let me know how it? works out for you. Thanks for sharing today's episode.
