Episode description

Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Dr. Carlos Aragon, a board certified veterinary surgeon. Dr. Aragon has been practicing for 9 years as a veterinary surgery specialist. He began his discussion by clarifying exactly what board certification requires, which was very impressive. He brings this experience to bear on a wide variety of difficult cases. His special areas of interest are cancer surgery, and orthopedic surgery.
One of the interesting aspects of a specialist practice is the extra equipment and training needed to perform these unusual procedures. This can result in an increased cost, which Dr. Aragon details, including the benefits of seeking out a veterinary surgeon.

Dr. Rossi also discussed two quick tips for overheated pets. Firstly, protecting your pet’s feet by avoiding midday walks on hot pavement, or covering their feet and secondly, never leave your pet in a locked parked car because of the risk of rapid overheating.
If you must leave your pet in the car, he suggests:
–parking in the shade,
–leaving the windows cracked
–keeping the doors unlocked
and
–leaving the air conditioner ON.
In addition, Dr. Rossi highlighted the signs of cognitive dysfunction syndrome in cats and dogs. The signs and treatment are presented in detail.
Finally, Dr. Rossi briefly mentioned his upcoming brand new book, entitled “All Things Cold and Slimy,” which tells you what veterinary school is REALLY like. Look for his latest book available on amazon.com, or iTunes.
