Robert Lee Yates "The Spokane Serial Killer"

How do you go from being a decorated war hero and family man, to targeting sex workers in serial killings? We'll never get an answer from Robert Lee Yates, Jr who currently sits in Washington State Penitentiary without possibility of parole for his part in 13 horrible murders. Yates was able to lead a double life and get away with it for a few years. Most any one you speak to that knew him never thought he would be capable of the crimes he admitted to, including his very own wife who had no idea...

The Bellvue murders

This episode takes us back to Bellevue for another family murdered by 2 young kids. The Wilson family was brutally murdered in 1997; the reason? Well, some teenage boys were "in a rut". Alex Baranyi, Jr and David Anderson would be convicted for the crimes, both at the age of 17. We talk a little bit on the similarities to The Rafay Family Murder from Episode 4 and we wonder, was this a copycat crime or a coincidence? In this case, it's very clear, these were kids with killing on their minds. Joi...

The murdering Roth brothers

Join us this episode as we talk about brothers Randolph and David Roth, convicted murderers in the state of Washington. Their crimes were separate and unrelated, however it led us to ask the question: Can being a murderer be a genetic trait? We learn about the use of a peacock feather as a way to convince a stranger to have sex and discuss why the 80's were a horrible time for hairstyles and meeting possible spouses. They say there comes a time when everything comes full circle. This episode is ...

"The Barfly Killer" Richard Marquette

This episode goes back a few decades but the details are still just as chilling. Richard Laurence Marquette liked to meet women in bars and would be the prime example of why you should never go home with a stranger. He was a young man when he committed an incredibly horrific murder after a night of bar hopping. But what would you say if we told you that while he was convicted if 1st degree manslaughter (and sentenced to life in prison) just 11 short years later he was released and would commit a...

Carole Baskin Tiger Lady

There is one case, and one case only, we could think of to add as a bonus episode here at What Happens in the Woods. That is the disappearance of Don Lewis, 2nd husband to the now infamous Carole Baskin from the Netflix series "Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness" and CEO of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. There isn't much information or any actual leads in the this case, but there is no shortage of topics to discuss. So join us as we ask the two most important questions out there; What Hap...

The Rafay family murders

While Jess binges another docu-series, she comes across a murder from 1994 that happened in the town of Bellevue, Washington. In her mind, this is just more proof the PNW is the epicenter of murder crime. Of course she needs to know more after finishing the 2 episodes on "The Confession Files" that describe the crime and researches as much as she can on it. That brings us to our latest podcast episode; "The Rafay Family Murders". Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns were Canadian citizens ultimately c...

Green River Killer

After an odd interaction with a hotel clerk while checking into a hotel in Renton, Washington at 1 am in the morning, Brice first learned about the Green River Killer. Little did he know his encounter that night would lead them to an abundance of true crime stories in the Pacific Northwest and fuel their idea to discuss them all on a podcast.
