Episode description

Noam Gal is a curator, art historian, and writer. He teaches at the Art History Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was the curator of photography at the Israel Museum between years 2013-21. Last year he created the exhibition “The Last Photograph: Ran Tal after Micha Bar-Am” at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and in the year before the solo exhibition of Chen Cohen “How to Die Beautiful” at CCA Tel Aviv. His exhibitions over the years have focused on the works of photographers like Ron Amir, Richard Avedon, Zanele Muholi, Ilit Azoulay, and Tomoko Sawada. In 2018 he curated and published the first survey in Hebrew of modernism in photography, titled “Modern Love”, based on the photo-collection of the Israel Museum. His most recent academic publications investigate the art of Alison Rossiter and Yael Bartana. Noam is currently finishing a book-project on Israeli art from the last 20 years. We spoke with him about the juridical reform that’s taking place now in Israel and the immense protest wave that we see in the streets in Israel every week in the past few months. How does the protests change Noam’s approach to art and culture? what does it call for?
