Sojourning on through the wilderness for forty years as everyone over twenty dies gave rise to plenty of doubts and outright unbelief among the people of Israel. They wanted a god like the nations around them. Into this context, Moses wrote a story. A story to recapture the wonder and worship of a people who were redeemed by the God who was there in the beginning.
