Since Constantine's conversion in the fourth century, Christians in the West have faced relatively minimal persecution and suffering. For those who have, they've clung to Jesus by identifying with his suffering to persevere because he persevered. As Jesus' own prophecy (Mark 10:33-34) is being fulfilled, we see Jesus is the silent lamb who was the sinless substitute by being the mocked king.
