Journaling is a way of getting the thoughts out of your head, on the endless loop, onto a page where you can read them, think about them, and maybe find a recurring theme. That's important because it will give you insight into your own thinking and belief systems. Insights and awareness are key to creating new ways of thinking that serve you, implement a creative idea that keeps coming to you, or allow you to improve relationships....the list is endless. I've journaled since I was 15, so over 30 years - and I find it's incredibly cathartic, as well as helps me codify my thinking, ideas, and mindset.
