Welcome to the WBZ book Club. I'm Jordan Rich. Brad Fawley is the author of a fine new novel called The front Runner. A young man in a small Kansas town, Russ Clayton, is coping with loss, the loss of people in his life, the loss of hope. The one thing he does and does well is to run, mainly to escape his fears and pain.

He ultimately gets to college and gains the opportunity to compete at the highest level internationally against a Russian team whose young runners are led by an egotistical coach who years ago was involved in a doping scandal. Russ is ultimately mentored by Brad Coy, at one point was the fastest marathon runner on Earth, but

who has a dark history with a cheating Russian coach. The front Runner is certainly about running, but it displays a terrific array of characters, some looking and finding retribution, others, such as the Russians, facing something a lot worse. Ultimately, The front Runner, by author Brad Fawley, who himself is a runner, is about winning the big race, the race of life. And that's the book Club. WBZ, Boston's news radio
