Transcript

Welcome to the WBEZ book Club. I'm Jordan Rich. Carmen Fields is the Emmy Award winning broadcast news journalist who's had a brilliant career here in Boston.

Now she's written a beautiful memoir about her father called Going Back to Tea Town The Ernie Fields Territory Big Band. Carmen's father, Ernie born in nineteen o four, was the leader of one of the best performing jazz and swing music bands coming out of the Midwest. He was not only a talented musician, but a pretty fine businessman who held his bands together and toured successfully despite many

obstacles, including racial segregation during the Jim Crow era. The music business today is tough, and back then it was even tougher, and Carmen beautifully chronicles the ups and downs of the industry and how her dad, although not a superstar, was consistently working bringing great music to the public.
