Hello, this is the WBEZ book Club. That sound is known to everybody in New England and beyond from the hit local rock group that Dropkick Murphy's. But where did the band get that name? Like you can find out in the book by Emily Sweeney called Dropkick Murphy A Legendary Life. Yes, there was a doctor John Murphy born in Malden, Massachusetts, back in nineteen twelve. He was known for a lot of things, including his successful career as
a professional wrestler. With his signature move you guessed it, a dropkick, he became famous for it. Wrestling for John was more of a vocation, a chance to help pay his way through medical school. John became a doctor of osteopathy and founded Bellow's Farm and Acting, a safe place where people could
come to recover from substance abuse and addiction disorders. He was certainly a local hero who helped a lot of people along the way, the guy for whom the legendary band is named the book Dropkick Murphy A Legendary Life by Emily Sweeney. And now you know, and that's the book club. WBEZ, Boston's news radio
