Speaker 1

Welcome to the WBZ Book Club. I'm Jordan Rich. I'm always intrigued by writers who have a certain knack for certain things. Simon Garfield is one such writer who's written Baskerville, The Biography of a Typeface. That's right, one of the most popular typefaces in the world was created back in the seventeen fifties by yes a man named Baskerville. In this book looks at his life and intent to design a reasonable and perfect set of letters and numbers produced

in fourteen sizes in both Roman and Italic. But it didn't happen overnight. It took Baskerville several years to perfect. He didn't enjoy success while he was alive. However, it took a couple of centuries for the Baskerville typeface to become really accepted. Things we take for granted had to be developed, had to be invented, and author Simon Garfield lays out a bit of typographic history of the font that today rules the roost. Baskerville The Biography of a Typeface,

and that's the book Club. WBZ, Boston's news radio
