ABOUT THATO TSHUKUDU
Thato Tshukudu (Gogo Mthunzi/Mkhulu Manzini) is a sangoma, diviner and nature therapist living in Pretoria and has been practising as a traditional healer for over 11 years. Her passion is to debunk the myths and negative publicity that surrounds traditional healing. She is an avid promoter and advocate for the celebration and preservation of African culture and heritage. She shares her experiences regarding her gift on social networks and various media platforms to demonstrate the positive impact that traditional healing has on the community and to encourage tolerance and acceptance for African Spirituality within our society.
She takes people on specially curated spiritual retreats to sacred sites and natural spaces nationwide in order to encourage their connection to the divine healing power of Mother Nature. During these retreats she customises activities, rituals and dialogues that are linked to the 5 elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit) of nature and that highlight the unique energy of the spaces that are visited. Thato also encourages conservation of nature amongst healers and for guests to honour and respect natural spaces for future generations. She believes the retreats are a way to spiritually decolonise these sacred sites that were deliberately usurped from their indigenous people and their custodians denied access because the oppressors understood their divine importance to significant elements of African cosmology.
She also works as an Operations Manager at SANParks and was part of the team that pioneered the introduction of Cultural and Spiritual experiences at the organisation. The first one of these was the African Spirituality Weekend at Golden Gate Highlands National, followed by the Mapungubwe Lecture Series at Mapungubwe National Park, a world heritage site, which is now in its third year running. The experiences aim to promote and celebrate cultural heritage, spiritual tourism and educate people on understanding and having respect and tolerance for cultural diversity.
