I think it was just water weight on the tree, and the tree kind of had a cool like a lean to it, which made it really pretty. But I think the extra weight from the lean just was too much. Joel, happy to have you up and about with us this morning. Glad to be here with you. Amy. Hey, I gotta tell you that this is the first time you and I are actually talking. But I've listened to your show and I have to say I love
it because a lot of financial stuff goes over my head. I just I'm not good with it, and you talk to me in a way that I understand. So thank you for that. Let's talk about something that that all of us are probably going to have at one point or another unless you live in New York. And that's a car, and they're not cheap, and they're getting more and more expensive. Yeah, that's so true. And the pandemic certainly changed the car market, and it made cars new and used go
skyrocket and value. And there were people who were like, wait a second, it's my car actually appreciating, which never happens in a normal world. But the pandemic world was kind of upside down. And so I was just hanging out with a friend the other day and he had his car, he
said, his car for thirteen years. He bought it brand new. It's a Hyundai, a small, tiny, little Hunday, and he paid thirteen thousand dollars for it, and now you can't get a new car for less than twenty And in fact, the last sub twenty thousand dollars new car just bit the dust, the Mitsubishi Mirage. And so it's not like people were actually buying sub twenty thousand dollars new cars anyway. But the average price of a new car nouse is closed. It's nearing fifty grand, and so it's
just a scary time to be buying a new car. So are they used cars still way up there in value? I remember during when the shortages and stuff during the pandemic, they were just skyrocketing and hard to get. Is that still happening or is that kind of played out? Yeah, so we're starting to see more kind of supply come back into balance with demands, but we prices remain elevated. So I think the average cost of a used vehicles
now twenty seven thousand dollars. So not only are there no new cars sub twenty k, we're also talking about people paying on average close to thirty thousand dollars. And it's hard to find a good used car for less than twenty And I found this out the hard way. I got rear ended in our old school Honda Odyssey minivan we had to upgrade, and exactly, I mean
the swagger wagon. It makes a thirty nine year old dad feel cool, right, But this is one of those things it's hard to find a good use car at a reasonable price, and especially with interest rates having gone up substantially too, if you're financing that thing, not only is the price higher, but then those monthly payments are higher as That's why it's really really important for consumers to shop well and also save up as much as they can to
put down towards the price of the car. Ideally, I would love for people to be able to pay in cash, but how likely is that. It depends on your specific financial situation, of course, and I know that it's easier said than done. But I think sometimes our desires, the things that we want out of a car, maybe we could tone those back a little bit, find a way. And I talked with Bill about this last
week. Bill handle, how there are car loans are getting longer and longer, and so what people are doing, Yeah, so what they're doing is they're signing up for a longer payback period, but then they're upside down in the car longer let's say they get in an accident god forbid, or then they have to they trade it in to try to get something newer because they get tired of that ride. Well, then they're rolling that car loan into
another one. Then they're upside down for forever, and it just creates this cascading effect that's really bad for your personal finances. So, I mean, when I look at this stuff, I want people to look at cheaper used cars. And the reality is when you look at the what Consumer Reports says
about the average price of repair of some of these used cars. Unless we're talking about like land Rovers, which are perpetually in the shop, a lot of these cars you can get and we're talking about a five year old car maybe something like four hundred dollars average maintenance costs in a year, and a ten year old used car something like eight hundred dollars a year in average in average maintenance costs. And so that is a better way to go for most
people a slightly older used car. And it's not like I think people assume, oh, it's gonna I'm gonna be in the mechanic shop every other week, But that's not necessarily the case. And so you're just saying, pass up on the bells and whistles, get a car that's more affordable, because if you, like you said, fifty thousand dollars. And so, how long are those loans being stretched out these days? Because it used to be that, like a five year loan was pretty standard. Sure, yeah,
and I that's even longer than I want people to take on. But now seven years is starting to become more normalized, and you can even get longer car loans than that. And so I think if it exceeds your ability to afford the car, if you're taking on a I think forty eight months is the limit. If you're going to take out a car loan and you can't afford the payments at a forty eight month clip, then it's time to look
for something cheaper. And so if you're stretching out those payments to be able to just make it work on a monthly, ongoing basis, that's when you get into trouble. Okay, all right, let's move on to credit cards
and restaurants, because there's something sneaky going on. Yeah, So there was an interesting article in the La Times just a couple of weeks ago about these annoying, and they're annoying, but they're actually kind of deceptive and underhanded at restaurants, these additional fees that are being added to people's bills, and kind of during the heart of the pandemic, we all kind of rallied around our local restaurants, right we knew they were struggling. We were getting take out,
doing whatever it took to keep our favorite spots alive. And there were certain search charges that were added to the bill that we understood. We're like, okay, we get it. That's a part of doing business right now in the current time period. But a lot of those annoying, pesky,
sometimes deceptive charges have stuck around and people are getting tired of them. And so when you when you talk to people about what they're they're ready to like not go back to a restaurant that has some sort of sneaky ten, fifteen, eighteen percent searcharge sometimes at the end of the bill, and patrons are confused too, They're saying, wait, is this My tip is that does
this go to the server? Oftentimes it doesn't, and so you think maybe you leave without tipping because you thought that that eighteen percent service charge was gratuity, but it's not. And so I think it's time for restaurants to change their pricing structure back to something more normal. Raise the prices and then make it clear to people what they're actually paying for, as opposed to getting a random charge at the end of the meal. Can you dispute the random charge?
I think it's worth asking a manager saying, hey, what am I paying for here? Hey, why wasn't I notified about this ahead of time? And you know, be kind, but push back and say listen, like, we love this place, and we would love we want to keep coming back. But unless I'm notified ahead of time, this seems pretty underhanded. And so that's something I would definitely bring to their attention. Say so, check the bill next time you go to a restaurant, because you never
know what they're adding. Also, unused gift cards real quick, what's going on with those? Because I know it's seven months after Christmas and I think I still have a couple. That was a great time right middle of the year to check and see, wait a second, where did I stash those gift card presents that I got for Christmas? And a lot of people something like forty seven percent of US adults have a gift card languishing, whether it's
in their wallet, their purse, or in their underwear drawer. Right wherever you keep your gift cards, there's one somewhere that you haven't used. And I just, yeah, I think it's a good time to bring that up. This was a recent bank rate survey in fact, And that's money that you can spend at restaurants, retailers, whatever, but it often gets forgotten about. And so I want people to go out there to gather them all together, plan your date nights around where you have gift cards to right and
start start using that money or one other thing. If you're like I don't even shop at this retailer, I don't know why somebody got me this gift card to begin with. Cardcash dot com is a place where you can sell that gift card for real US dollars, which you're not going to get dollar for dollar, but it's a really good way for you at least get something for that gift card that might otherwise just kind of continue languishing. Or if it's a gift card for a store, you could buy someone else a present
for this year with it. Yes, that's another good that's another good option. And just one other thing on the gift card front. I don't think they make great gifts, and I want people to instead consider giving cash with a thoughtful note. Because of this problem, this mass some amount of gift cards that goes unused. Instead give cash and write a thoughtful gift and say, hey, I know you were looking at this or this, or I know this is your favorite store, but I wanted you to be able to
buy whatever you wanted. Because we're training greenbacks that can be used anywhere in the world for only being able to spend that money at a specific store retailer. And it really seems silly when you think about it like that, but we do it because we think it's a thoughtful gift. But I don't think it has to be thoughtless to give cash. I want to bring that back and make it cool again. And that is how to Money with Joel Laskard. You can catch him Sundays on KFI noon to two and on Instagram at
how to Money Joel. Thanks so much, Joel, thanks for having me Amy. A ninth bus full of asylum seekers has arrived in LA from Texas. Thirty seven people were on Board officials say many of them have relatives or friends in the area. At six o five, it's handle on the news. Former President Trump says he will surrender at a jail in Atlanta Thursday. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC News correspondent Tom Rivers. Tom, things are getting pretty scary, at least the words are getting scary.
North Korea making moves to escalate things between the North and well pretty much everybody else. What's going on exactly, And we've been here many many times before, but as you point out, a rhetoric is just getting a bit hotter this time around a lot of moving parts. Let's let's look at it. We have the annual South Korean US and others ancillaries involved as well, UN forces, Britain, Greece, Italy, fill in the blank. Those are
going on. North Korea never likes that, but North Korea through its wire service as those particular exercises are much larger in scale and involving things like a nuclear carrier, a nuclear sub B fifty two's B one bomber, etc. So they're they're they're concerned, worried about that. Also, they're trying to connect dots, they say the big meeting at Camp David on Friday between Japan, South Korea, and US leadership points towards some kind of a ZA offensive
action against North Korea. So they are strengthening their rhetoric. They're saying, look, this could be a nuclear confrontation that goes beyond the neighborhood, so to speak. So, yes, you're absolutely right, it's it's worrying, and they're absolutely there's absolutely no dialogue going on with this administration and Pyongyang as we saw under President Trump. So we are where we are right now. And yeah, it's it's a tense world. It's just gotten a bit tenser.
Okay. And are the demonstrations act or the drills actually larger than they have been in the pastor is that just North Chris saying they are. No, they are larger this time around. So they are factually correct on that one. But again they've always hated these things. We've seen back going back about ten years ago. Occasionally some moves to try to develop a dialogue. The exercises were scaled back, some of the on ground drills were turned into
simulations, et cetera, et cetera. Not the case right now, okay, And North Korea is as you mentioned, saying that the meeting between South Korea, Japan, and the US increases the possibility of nuclear war. I mean Kim Jong who isn't stupid. He knows that that would be the destruction of his of his country exactly exactly. But again we're talking about nuclear weapons, and you know, if he gets hit, he says he's going to take out those around him. So yes, it is very very serious.
And you know, in a different context talking about you know, the nuclear threat over Ukraine, if that, if that has ever touched off, there are no winners in that. So yes, it is, it is. It is more than just you know, play ground bullying, very very serious implications indeed, and as the US responded at all yet or they're just not not this time,'re not doing anything this time. Again, we may get word from the State Department or the Pentagon later on, but no,
nothing immediate. Okay, we'll watch that closely. Thank you so much for your time this morning, Tom, We'll talk to you again soon. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour news room. A ninth bus carrying migrants from Texas has arrived in LA. Okay, so we got two men who decided to take a hike. They hit the road. They walked forty one miles around La in one day. Guys, first of all, tell
me why you did this. Yeah, well, I mean I moved to La a couple of years ago, and I found myself a little frustrated with how hard it was to get around and how hard it was to walk around the city. So I thought about, you know, taking the challenge of walking a host city in a day, and asked my friends, you know, who would be willing to come with me? And West said yes, and we took it from there. Okay, So in your daily life, Tucker, you're a video editor and Wes is a comedy show producer, and
you guys have been friends for a really long time. Yeah right, we've been twenty years. Yeah, twenty years first grade. Okay, So tell me where where did you go on your journey? Yeah? So we've done it twice now. Actually, so the first time we started off in Pasadena and made our way through the east side into downtown and then over to Santa
Monica. And the most recent trip we took, we started off in Santa Monica this time, went down to Marina del Rey and then across the city through Kennethon Downtown again up around Dodger Stadium, and then we finished in Kenneth Hunt. And you did this all in one day? Yes, very ill advised trip, but yes, you did all in one day. And it was about forty one miles and took us about fifteen and a half hours. Yeah, okay. And did you goes pretty much straight through and just power
through or did you stop along the way? What was it like? Yeah? I mean you want to you want to get as much my lunch in as possible, so you don't really want to stop too much. But also you need to give yourself like a little break. So we had stopped for lunch and stopped anytime we were in too much pain to you know, have to take five minutes and then just kind of power through it and tried to do it as quickly as possible, and we'd kind of push each other,
you know, to keep going. And I think that's the only way to do it. Okay, what was your favorite part? What was the coolest thing you saw along the way? I mean, oh, go ahead, West, go ahead. Well I was I'd actually never been to Kenneth or Griffith Observatory, which is where we ended our trip, and so that was a highlight for me. Also meant no more walking, so that was an added bonus. Okay, I gotta ask you about that because you started in
Santa Monica this time and you ended at the Griffith Park Observatory. It's quite a hike to get up there, and you put that on the last leg of the trip. Yeah, why not another terrible idea of a Yeah, okay, what was the worst part aside from the pace? The middle? The middle is usually the worst, right before lunch. I think West would agree. Both times right before lunch, when you're hungry and you're not even
halfway yet, that's the worst, okay. And then as you're walking around, did you get into were you in nice areas, sketchy areas, kind of a little bit of everything? Yeah, certainly a bit of both.
I mean, as we're in Santa Monica and walking through Marino Way, where there were some you know, definitely more affluent areas, and then some areas are just a little bit more industrial and you know, not particularly well taken care of, but you know the whole, it adds to the experience on the whole, seeing both sides of that carn Okay, So when you guys normally go out on a walk, do you do like a ten mile walk? And just decided, yeah, well, West walks every day. I
used to. I lived in Seattle, and so I did a lot of hiking back then. But I mean, yeah, just trying to walk as much as possible, even if it's just to the grocery store down the street, trying to do that as much. But yeah, definitely three mile walks were unusual to us for sure, Okay. And was there a goal in mind? Was it just to answer the question is La walkable or were you raising money for charity or just doing it to do it. I was just
doing it to do it. I mean my friend said he was going to do something times, so I said, I better not let him do it alone. True friend, And I really don't. I mean, that's for the question, is La walkable? It's a pretty easy answer, and I don't think it'll come as a surprise. No, it's not. Why is it not walkable? Like? What did you run into? And there's just so many parts of the city that are, you know, just not friendly
to pedestrians. We'd be on a sidewalk in an end on one intersection, you have to cross the street to the other side, and just a lot of the city isn't really activated. There's just not a lot of people out, so you know, you can walk it. And I think we showed that anyone could walk from point A to point B. But is it enjoyable or practical to walk across you know, I think it depends on where you are, but across the whole thing not not quite. Okay, you're going
to do it again. We actually are going to do it again. We have one plan for this weekend and this time we're actually gonna go through San Diego, so we'll be starting into the border and then heading up through San Diego and ending in La Joya, and then we're hoping to take it to San Francisco as well, and then the rest of the country and the rest of the world. Okay, I think are you going to tie in charities on this or something? You have it so far? Yeah? Absolutely,
uh yeah, that's a great idea. Do it for a cause aside from just doing it for good health. Yeah. Okay, thank you guys so much. Appreciate your time. Tucker and West, good luck, get some new shoes. We'll see you on the streets. Thanks so much, Jamie, appreciate it all right, take care. Thirty seven people were on board. Offici'll say many of them have relatives or friends in the area. We're just minutes away from Handle. On the news this morning, President Biden headed to Hawaii in the wake of the wildfires. Right now, let's say good morning to Rachel Corey, the executive director of Stand Up for Pits. Rachel, there is growing concern on skid row involving dozens of pitbulls. Tell us what's going on. It's an increasingly bad situation.
The dogs that we've been made aware of our obviously pitbull type dogs, because although there are several other kinds down there, but pitbull type dogs, because that's what my organization focuses, focuses on helping and educating and advocating on behalf of So if absolutely horrific, the dogs are being forced to stay in creates wire creates, many of which don't even have a bottom on the crate. Not that it matters that much when it's a hundred degrees out, and
but the pavement can be up to one hundred and forty degrees. When it's one hundred degrees out or even above eighty degrees, the dogs have no food or water. They're laying in their own vomits and urine and poop. We are being told and know that they are openly breeding the dogs and selling them for drugs and using them as hurdering tools. Many of the dogs have wounds and lacerations. They are have no shade. They are suffering out in plain sight, day after day, day in and day out, year after year.
And it's compounding the overcrowded shelter system in LA City and County. And therefore we don't understand why the laws are not being enforced. How are these people allowed to openly abuse and neglect dogs in plain sight, openly breed and sell dogs in plain sight. We my organization offered to spend that are sixty pitbull type dogs. Only that and the encampment residents refuse, and they're allowed
to refuse, okay, and can't can anybody step in for this? I have My organization has contact the Mayor's office and LA Animal Services, okay, and neither of them have responded, okay, so we actually reached out as well. We got a response and this is a producer and asked the question about it, and the LA Animal Services said that they have personally frequented skid
Row. They say they strictly enforced the laws. They've been out many times and continue to go to skid Row and other areas of the city to help people and animals. This is just their response. Again, she said, we take any allegation of animal abuse and breeding seriously. Animal Services is actively investigating the complaint. She says that she and officers have been dispatched multiple times since the complaint was lodged and will continue to act and investigate as necessary to
ensure the safety of all dogs across the city. And your response to that is canned. Just a canned response, but nonsense. What is there to investigate? A sixth grader could see what's going on. There should be no investigation. They're doing it in plain sight. They're not hiding anything. They're
unabashedly and unapologetically abusing, breeding and abusing suffering animals every single day. We know that people want companions, that's okay, But specifically, what your complaint with this is is that they're keeping them restricted, tied up in cages and they're breeding them, which is against the law in La because La City law requires all cats and dogs over four months of age to be spayed or neutered.
Yes, And when I called North Central Animal Shelter and spoke to an officer, I asked why they're not enforcing the laws and he said, well, all we could really do if they're breeding the dogs and the dogs aren't life and say, they can't even show proof of ownership. So if they can't show proof of ownership and the dogs are not spare neutered, then there's TWOBE issues right there. He said, all we could do is issue citations
and it doesn't matter because they're homeless. They will do no good. Yeah. I said, so when can you go out and help these dogs that are languishing and suffering and he said pretty much only if they're dying. If we get a call that a dog is in imminent danger of death and dying, we can go out and remove the dog then, But because they're not living in the quote unquote ideal situations, we can't remove them. We can't
take people's dogs. And one other point, I just want to add, there is a limit to how many dogs someone can own a LA city, and on these blocks there are sometimes ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen dogs and no one can prove ownership. But they can't take their dogs. None of it makes any sense. It's nonsense, okay, Rebecca. So how can people help? They can sign the petition that's available. They can make their voices heard. They can demand that LA Animal Services and the mayor address
this and stop issuing boiler point nonsense, you know statements. They're not doing anything. You know, they need to make them follow the law and stop allowing suffering. And also the other things people can do to help is they can become committed fosters and if these dogs ever get removed, consider taking one
into your home and fostering it to a rescue. Okay, Rebecca Cory, thank you so much for being the voice for these dogs, and hopefully we're going to see some change, because dogs are the best things ever and they deserve better than this. They are gifts to humanity. We don't deserve them. And I thank you for allowing me to be their voice and helping us in this permission because it's it's really horrible. So what can you do? You can sign the petition at change dot org slash Saving Skid Road Dogs.
You can also get more information and donate to the cause at stand Up for Pitts dot us. You can also find them on Instagram at stand Up for Pitts Foundation. I've seen video of it. It's not pretty, you guys. Pits are beautiful dogs. I know they get a bad rap. They're beautiful and they need to have good homes and I don't think they're getting them here. Okay, before we go, where did the hour go? Do
you know? We're just minutes away from handling the news. But I want to let you know about something that we have to say goodbye to, and that is Gladstones. Gladstones in Malibu, after fifty years, is closing within the next year. That's the bad news. Good news is Wolf Wolfgang Puck is coming along and he's going to build a new Frank Gary designed restaurants. So apparently it's going to be a standalone restaurant and then it will also have
a separate deck for public use. It will offer some sort of food and beverage outlet, but it's for those who are just visiting the beach. So Gladstones is going away, and you know that when my mom comes down to La, it's her favorite place she goes. Can we go to that fish place on the beach? It's her favorite? So I won't be able to take her there again. Lots of good memories and lots of good food at Gladstones. We lead local line from the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. I'm
