held for a fifth day. Yesterday's swap was the latest since the ceasefire began on Friday. No American hostages were released during that exchange. We don't have perfect visibility on where they are. We know Hamas can get to all the hostages if it wants to, and it has the ability to do that. Now, we'll keep pressing to get these Americans out as much as we can. The National Security Council's John Kirby says the ceasefire is the best way to
see all of the hostages freed. Israel says ten of its citizens and two people from Thailand were freed by Hamash yesterday. Israel released thirty palace in prisoners in exchange. Now, let's say good morning to ABC's White House correspondent Karen Travers. Karen, a little problem with the National Christmas Tree yesterday. Yeah, this was really something like straight out of Clark Griswold's National Enterance Bersas Vacation.
Okay, so this is not a small Christmas tree. You know, you maybe sell the pictures and videos of the First Lady welcoming in Christmas tree to the White House right before Thanksgiving. That's the Christmas tree that goes inside the White House, a lovely tree that goes in the Blue Room. This one, however, goes out on the ellipse behind the White House, south of the White House, kind of like way far south of the south lawn.
It is forty feet tall, so it is massive. And we had some really strong winds yesterday in DC and the White House was you could feel it in the windows and it was about forty some miles an hour yesterday. And where that is, it's kind of just like open grass, open space down there. And at some point the tree, which already had lights and things on it, just toppled over. They had to bring in a crane to always the thing back up. It took a couple of hours, but
the Park Service said the show must go on. They are planning for everything to be full steam ahead tomorrow night, Thursday for the official annual tree lighting ceremony, that's the one that the President First Lady attends. Dion Warwick is going to be singing there. It's a really lovely event. It's a big, big deal in Washington. But I think they're a little nervous today about how the tree is going to hold up because it might be still a little
bit windy. But so it's quite a project yesterday to get the tree back up and standing. And they're actually planted. It's kind of crazy. They're what I was going to ask you about. Yeah, so when it comes to sixteen seventies, they're not just displayed in tree stand I think because maybe can't because they're so huge. They're planted on the ellipse. And this was
a new one. So the previous tree have been planted two years ago, but it was just cut down like two weeks ago because there was an infection in the tree. So they had to get rid of that one bring this one in. So it's only been there for about two and a half weeks, and maybe that just wasn't long enough for it to take and the poor
thing fell down. You know. We had some Santa Ana wind events not too long ago, and same thing where they had recently planted some trees out in front of our building and I came into work and they were all blown down. They were planted, but they were blown down, So now I mean yeah, you know, anybody that's put one up in their house and seen it wobble, can just imagine the Park Service stretch yesterday if that's that big sucker coming down. Oh yeah, and the panic because they're doing the
Christmas tree lighting ceremony. So it's back up. Yes, I'm guessing that it's got cables folding it and all of that stuff. Now, yeah, we are assured that they are feeling good about it being secured. We're going to get some further updates today according to the Park Service, but they are hopeful that the tree lighting ceremony tomorrow night down there at the Ellipse will go forward. And it's a lovely event. The President always attends, no matter
the administration makes a little quick motorcade down from the White House. Traffic is a nightmare in Washington for that hour that the President is down there. But it's a great event. Okay, So the First Lady also unveiled Christmas decorations at the White House. Yes, yes, they're very lovely this year.
There's a whole theme is like Christmas in the Holidays through a child's eyes, So it's all very playful, very elaborate, lots of you know, candy kind of themes that of course the famous gingerbread house that's in the State dining Room. There are different themes for the pets of the first family. They're cats, there's dogs. They have displays for them, and it's just a very delightful decorations that she unveiled on Monday. And so they'll do open houses
for guests if you get tickets over the next couple of weeks. In addition to the private parties that they host for members of Congress, ambassadors, donors, you know, military, there's two different press parties. They're basically hosting a party every night starting this week. Well why wouldn't you? Oh my goodness, you got a lovely house like that, you want to show it off? Have you seen? It's exhausting too, though I have not yet. I will get to see them on Friday. Okay, we might have
to check in and see if you get any scoop on it. Hey, here's a gingerbread house, Yes, a regular gingerbread house. Or is it the White House's gingerbread It's the White House's Gingerbread. Yeah, and it's real. It's really pretty too. Okay, Well, glad they got the tree back up. Thank you so much for the update. We'll talk to you day all right, you too. Let's get back to some of the stories
coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Governor Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are getting ready to face off in the great Red versus Blue state debate. Republican Congressman Kevin Kylie says he wants a debate to focus on the realities of California. Approximately five. That is not it. Let's try this
one more time. Here's Congressman Kevin Cutie. When it comes to homelessness, when it comes to crime, when it comes to education, when it comes to the cost of living, Kylie sis Governor Newsom is going to have a tough time defending his record in the state. We have the second highest unemployment in the country. We were dead last in the country last year in terms of wage growth. People are wages are stagnating here more than in any other
state. The debate is tomorrow night at six on Fox News. Sean Hannity is the moderator. What Almino really is doing is tilting the odds.

Irvine police are getting thirteen new electric vehicles to help patrol the Great Park, which is getting a

Urvine Mayor Farrakahn says almost one million dollars in state funding will help Irvine PD patrol those current and upcoming attractions, plus six ev charging stations at the Great Park where ipd's use. Irvine Police Chief Michael Kin says they're getting the Ford Lightning Truck,
Mustang mock E, Polaris Ranger, and ATVs. The remainder of these funds we'll go towards the purchase of police radios and accessories, as well as software and other equipment for the creation of our new real time crime center at the Great Park in Irvine. Corbin Carson KFI needs well, You're going to be paying more for your Christmas tree this year. The American Christmas Tree Associations's prices are up ten percent. Lame it on inflation, higher gas prices, transportation
costs, and trees lost to wildfires. Subin tay Foot Doug for their one hundred dollars, we actually grow our own pine trees as Christmas trees. You could get a nice d eight foot tree for just sety bucks. Tyler Stokes with the Family Christmas Tree Farm and Alcohol says most trees are shipped in from Family farms in Oregon and Washington. The most popular day to buy a Christmas tree is the first Saturday in December. Yeah, that's this Saturday. I
think I'll be one of those people getting a tree on Saturday. At least one service member has been killed in the crash of a US Osprey aircraft. It crashed into the sea off the coast of western Japan. The Coast Guard says six people were on board. There are reports that three people have been found in the water by fishermen, but not clear if they're alive. The NYPD is preparing for potential protests during the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony tonight.
Pro Palestinian organizers have posted on social media for their supporters to flood the ceremony in support of Gaza. You're gonna pay more for your Christmas tree this year. The American Christmas Tree Association says prices are up ten percent. You can blame it on inflation, higher gas prices, transportation costs and trees lost to wildfires. At six oh five, its handle on the news, Nikki Haley just picked up a very rich endorsement. Bill's gonna tell you who it
is and what it means. Right now, let's say good morning to the host of Rich on Tech right here on KFI and KTLA tech reporter Rich DeMuro. Good morning, Rich, Happy after Thanksgiving week US. Good morning to you, Amy. Okay, so we got a new iPhone and there are some issues with something new on that iPhone. Well, this is a really
interesting occurrence. So basically, over the weekend, law enforcement agencies around the US started posting to their social media about a new feature on the iPhone called name Drop, and they said, this is really scary because basically, if you walk past someone else's iPhone, you could exchange your contact information with them, or a stranger could steal your information. And I was kind of scratching my head because a lot of people started emailing me these warnings and I said,
wait, really, I don't think that's true. And so after a bunch of testing and after talking to some security experts, it turns out the warnings were kind of not real. So this does not work in that way. The feature is called name drop. It's meant to let you tap two iPhones together to exchange your contact information. Your phone has to be unlocked. Nothing gets exchanged unless you say share, and a stranger can't just walk by
you and grab your information. Oh okay, so that's I remember we talked about this a couple of months ago, because it's sort of like what the BlackBerry used to do, like twenty years ago. Yes, we were talking about, you know, tapping two phones together, and you know, Apple just made it easier. You've always been able to air drop from one iPhone to another. Now they just made it so that you can tap those two
phones together to sort of pair them. But if you're still concerned about this, if you want to read all of the information, I put it on my website, rich on tech dot tv. I explain the feature exactly how it works, and you can decide if you want to turn it off. You can turn this off. Just keep in mind if you do that, you'll still be able to air drop, you just won't be able to tap two iPhones together to air drop. Okay, so you don't need This is
something that isn't as bad as what was initially thought. So that's good, right, Yeah, a little bit of a little bit of fear mongering going on, but which I don't really I think. I think the police stations were looking for like an easy win on social media because it's you know, it's interesting. You're like, wait, what, I got some good information and then it turns out it's just really not true. Okay, well that's good, all right. So speaking, since we're still talking about Apple,
what are they doing. They're ending their partnership with Goldman Sacks. Yeah, so a lot of people have this Apple Card. It's it's basically a credit card that you sign up for and manage through your iPhone. And what people like about it is it gives you two percent or three percent cash back or one percent depending on you know what, your how You're buying things right on
your phone, and it does it immediately. So they call it like daily cash, and so people like this and that daily cash can earn interest if you put it into a savings account. Long story short, Apple partnered with Goldman Sachs on this program, which they had not really done a large credit card program like this before either company. And it turns out from all the reports that it just was not a winner for either of them. People. I guess they don't charge any fees on this card. People default, it's
charge interest. I mean, it's a whole big thing. And so long story short on that, Goldman Sachs is our one of them is canceling this. And so now the question remains for all these Apple iPhone users that have this card, what's going to happen? Is the card going to go away? Or is another company going to swoop in, buy up the debt and continue to manage this. We don't know if that's the case, but I would say, Amy, since money is at stake here, someone's going to
come in and buy up these accounts. Okay, do we have any idea like when that's going to happen. Can we still use the Apple card or you can still use the card. This is twelve to fifteen months that we're looking at, so it's not something that's going to happen overnight over the holidays. But my advice just use your debit card. Don't even worry about this. You know, you know who cares. Just get rid of the cash back. It's not that much anyway. There you go, Okay, and
then Ikea is swooping in and making smart homes cheaper. I just wanted to say the three names of ikea new smart home devices. Okay, you can never pronounce the stuff at Aikia, I can't. But they have three new smart sensors. One is called the valhorn. You've got the parasol and the bad Ring. Maybe it's a drain, I don't know, but these are sensors that can help you control your smart home things. One is for doors
and windows, notifies you if they're open or closed. One is a motion sensor that can activate lights and of course lets you customize your smart lights. And then the bad ring is actually pretty cool. It's actually pretty good. It detects water leaks and if you've ever had one in your house amy like I did, I'm talking tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage when you
don't know if you have a water leak. So if you don't have some sort of sensor in your home that alerts you by your washing machine or buy your water heater, please invest. These are ten dollars. There's many many others out there that are similar priced or maybe a little bit more expensive. Twenty thirty dollars. It can save you tens of thousands of dollars by alerting you when that water hits the floor before it becomes a giant flood. I
didn't realize they were so inexpensive. I thought all this stuff was super spendy. Well, this is part of the appeal of these Ikea ones. They are extremely cheap, so we don't have the exact pricing yet here in the US. Over in Europe they're about ten dollars each, so we have no reason to believe they would be much more expensive over here. But under twenty dollars for these things, it's just you know, people are going to be
in Ikea see them and say, oh, that's kind of cool. I can get an alert on my iPhone when you know, when a door is opened in my house. I'll buy one of these, and it just, you know, it just makes these things more prevalent in homes everywhere. It makes good sense. It's like having a smoke detector in your house, you know. Yeah, And it's fun. Like you'll just find new uses, like for your garage, Like people think they leave their garage open all the
time. If you have one of these little sensors, you can actually look at your phone and no without walking outside. Okay, and before I let you go, I just saw that Cyber Monday numbers were in and sales are up like ten percent over last year to twelve point four billion. Are there still out there or they do? They go away? After Monday? A lot of them went away. I'm seeing like kind of a little bit of
remnants of some deals. Sports stuff is supposedly going to be on sale in the next week or so, so if you're looking like sports equipment for your kids, but a lot of the things that I was tracking, I would say about fifty percent of them, the prices just jumped right back up. But you know, we'll see. I think people spent a lot of money, so retailers might give it another go before the holiday because they see that people are willing to spend money, so they're saying, you know what,
let's do one more discount. But I don't think the discounts are going to be as great as they were on Cyber Monday. They really are the best on that day. And I didn't spend a time. Okay, oh you didn't. Good for you, Rich Demiro, Thank you so much for spending some time with us today. This is KTLA tech reporter Rich Demiro. In case you didn't know, he's also the host of rich on Tech right here
on KFI Saturdays from eleven to two. Lots and lots of great tech advice for you, and you can follow Rich on Instagram at rich on Tech his website rich on Tech dot tv. Thanks so much, Rich, we'll talk to you next week. Thank you. Amy. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four our newsroom. The family of a man shot and killed by a CHP officer on on one O five Freeway and Lynn Wood says the man was having mental health issues. The family
of Jesse Deminguez filed a claim against the CHP earlier this month. An officer responded to reports that Dimingez was walking on the freeway. The CHP says Diminguez used a taser on the officer during a struggle. Attorney Michael Correo says the family has yet to see proof Dimingez had a taser. We can't depend on the cchp's word. We want to see the evidence. Attorneys say the officer should have called in more resources and should not have shot Demingez they're calling on
DA Gascone to prosecute the officer. Blake Trolli KFI news talks continue to extend the pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas, who allowed for the release of more hostages and Palestinian prisoners. The original four day ceasefire was extended by two days on Monday, when it was first set to a spire, and now it's expected to expire today. Twelve more hostages have been released
by Hamas as part of an extended ceasefire deal with Israel. This is supposed to be the last day of a six day ceasefire. About one hundred and seventy people are still being held hostage by Hamas. A homeless woman has been arrested after a philanthropist was shot and killed in his home on the Miracle Mile. Police say the woman broke into Lead with Love CEO oh Michael Latt's home on Monday night. The woman was arrested at the home and is being held
on three million dollars bail. Former First Lady Roslynd Carter will be buried in her hometown of Plains in South Georgia today. All living First Ladies, former President Clinton and President Biden, along with President Carter, attended a service held for Roslind Carter yesterday in Atlanta at Emory University. At six oh five, It's handle on the news. Mayor Bath says she has housed eighteen thousand homeless
people. But the big question now is will they stay that way? At five point fifty why the skies could soon smell a little like French fries. It'll make sense, I promise. Sami's on it. Dami's on It's on it, Dami's on it. What am I on I am on a plethora of streaming shows because there's documentaries, there's series, there's movies. There's so much to see. How how do you know what to see? And so lots of times they take recommendations from my friends, my family. They have
good recommendations most of the time. Right now, we're going to check out Lessons in Chemistry. It's on Apple TV stars Brie Larson. It was being released weekly as Apple does, but now the full season is out, so if you want to binge it, you can. So. Bree Larson plays a chemist who, because she's a woman in the nineteen fifties, really struggles with it because she can only be a lab tech because women don't they can't be lead scientists in the nineteen fifties. The chemist she works with kind of
treat her more like a secretary. She does make a mean cup of coffee because she's a chemist after all. It's a good character for Bree Larson. She is stoic, she's unemotional yet scientifically incredibly curious, and you it's really great because I think she does. She's such a good actress. She does a really good job with this role. So you see her fall, you
see her get up. You see her grow, and you see her evolve, and I always like when they do that with a character arc, like the character doesn't stay the same throughout the series, and she definitely does some evolving. It follows her journey from the lab to the kitchen, where she ends up posting a TV show called Supper at Six, which we know from the very first episode because they launch it with her on TV, So I'm
not spoiling anything for you. Probably won't be another season. The show pretty much comes to a satisfying and that it was based on a book, so it kind of encapsulates the book. I would imagine. I have not read the book. If they wanted to do another season, I think they probably could, but from what I'm hearing, there aren't any talks right now to see it. But definitely worth the watch. Thought that was a really good one. And then, as I tend to do when I start streaming stuff,
then I start searching around and I dive down rabbit holes. And I did it yesterday because after I got done watching the last episode of Lessons in Chemistry, I found Hannah Waddingtons home for Christmas, and of course Hannah Wattington was Rebecca on ted Lasso, and so she does this Christmas special. It again is on Apple TV. It's only forty five minutes, so it's a pretty quick watch. And I will tell you that one is a good one.
If you want to feel good about the Christmas season and just you know, feel happy and joyous, this is the one to watch because her excitement enthusiasm comes through in spades, and she's just beautiful and boy can she sing. And then it was really fun too, because it was like the whole cast of ted Lasso was there for the show. It was a live show in London at a theater and it was really good. And then, as I mentioned, I went down that rabbit hole and then went, you know
what, I really loved the Christmas episode of ted Lasso. So I went and found that and watched that, and it reiterated my belief that ted Lasso is probably the best show on TV in the last ten years. It's fabulous. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it. If you have watched it, watch it again because again I watched the Christmas episode last night and it still just made me smile. And if you need to feel good and you want to be Happy. Ted Lasso's The Way to Do It Again
on Apple TV. That's what I'm on this week. Now, let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour news room. Irvine is looking to ban single use plastics in local businesses. The city's Adam Cavici says the first year of the ordinance would be dedicated to giving businesses time to make the changes they need to give businesses time to run down their existing stock for city staff to connect them to alternative products that replace the
plastic ones that were prohibiting right now. The ordinance would prevent the sale of small plastic water bottles and require restaurants to use compostable or compostable utensils for takeout. Most Christmas trees come to us from Oregon and Washington. I always buy mine from Oregon. Reminds me of home. We're just a couple of minutes away from Handle. On the news this morning, a key Fed official is hinting at not another interest rate hike, but a cut, and it could be
coming soon. Right now, let's say hi and good morning to ABC News correspondent from the Transportation Unit, Sam Sweeney. Good morning, Sam, Any, Good morning are you. I'm I'm doing great. So I'm hearing that the skies could smell soon like French fries. You could say that a big
milestone. Yesterday, a Virgin Atlantic seventy seven dream Liner with Richard Branton on board, flu from London to New York and they used what's known as one sustainable aviation fuel, which is made of of used cooking oil or animal waste and corn waste of farm by products, and it's about seventy percent cleaner than traditional petroleum jet, a fuel that we normally use in planes. There weren't paying passengers on board. This is purely a test, one little step and
a long journey to help roll this out more mainstream. Okay, so you said it was made up of processed cooking oil and waste animal fat. They have to have a lot of fuel to fly across the ocean. Where'd they get it all? Well, there's a couple of companies that are making this and they use a number of different sources, but it is a lot of form farm waste, even sugar water. And there's a company called Yron. It's in based in Wisconsin. One of the company's marathon also working to create
safas fuel. And the problem is with this, what you just pointed out, is getting it to scale and getting it to the airports. Actually the transportation of it. You know, we have infrastructure that moves aviation fuel from you know, processing plans to the airports, but getting this fuel there is challenging. And it's also more expensive to buy this fuel. It's about three to five times the cost. So the airlines aren't inclined to purchase it,
which means the manufacturers aren't inclined to produce it at a mass scale. So they need the government and private dollars to come in and subsidize this to get it to scalability so that we can put it in more planes. And right now, the FAA is only certifying staff for up to fifty percent of fuel per plane, but we're still nowhere near that number. You and I are not going to be on a plane with fifty percent staff at any time soon, but we are on planes right now where it is blended in, especially
in Los Angeles. Las is a big airport that uses safas fuel and they blend it into that petroleum jet, a fuel that we know now to help make it just a little bit cleaner. Who knew. I had no idea about that. So you said that the transportation is problem. I mean, if they made the switch, could they just use existing lines and infrastructure and just switch it over to the renewable fuel. You could, And that's the best part about the staff fuels that's considered tropped in, which means you don't
need to change anything. You don't need to change the engines on the planes, you don't need to add any new technology or equipment to make it work. But these fuel lines that have been built over decades, you know, come from you know, the Gulf Coast or the ports in Los Angeles. They don't come from these facilities that are producing saff right now. So it's
going to be a logistical challenge. We're going to have to get some infrastructure set up and of course get it to scale and make it worthwhile for everyone to use. But there's a major push to make aviation greener right now. Greenhouse gases from airplanes are about two percent of overall global emissions, so big push to get them to be a little bit cleaner. Okay, And you said subsidies may be a way to bring it up to scale, but I know that like in California, they're saying, hey, it has to be
all electric cars for any new cars after like twenty thirty five. I can't remember what the year is, but are there rumblings within the government they might start cracking down on the airlines and say, hey, you've got to make this switch. There are goals. You know, there's no limits right now because we just don't have the technology, but the airlines want to be you know, carbon neutral by twenty fifty. It's an ambitious goal. And you know, as far as saf goes, some are saying that we could be
a ten percent by twenty thirty. Some experts say that's ambitious. It's more like twenty thirty five, twenty forty. But there are a number of new technologies that are rolling out, but it takes time. And like you just mentioned electric cars, there are subsidized and nose with seventy five hundred dollars text credits. You know, there are manufacturer credits to incentivize you know, getting electric cars, and there are benefits electric cars, you know, require less
maintenance. But they also you know, the tires on electric cars turn out quicker. So there are drawbacks. There are negatives and positives, but just like that, we need the investment to bring it to scale. All right, Well, we've got to start super interesting and so this guys aren't going to smell like French frise anytime soon, not anytime sooner. We'll get there, all right, Great, Sam Sweeney, thanks so much for your information today. Appreciate it. Thank you. Let's get back to some of the
stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Three agencies on Maui have been hit with subpoenas over that fatal wildfire back in August. Hawaii's Attorney General says the Mali Emergency Management Agency, the Mali Department of Public Works, and the Mali Department of Water Supply. We're supposed to provide documents to the Fire Safety Research Institute, which was hired by the Attorney General to investigate the
events leading up to and during the fires. Officials say at least ninety county employees have already been interviewed and hundreds of documents have been reviewed. The fire killed at least one hundred people and destroyed the historic town of Lehina. Steve Corregory kf I News. A military plane from the US carrying fifty four thousand pounds of food and medical supplies for people in Gaza has landed in Egypt.
The plane is the first of three aimed at helping with the humanitarian crisis during the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The US Agency for International Development said yesterday. The supplies will be transported on the ground to Gaza and distributed to Palestinians by the United Nations. The Hamas controlled region has been sealed off by Israel
since the group's surprise attack on Israeli border towns last month. A new study has found a super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy is spinning rapidly and altering space time around it. Hard to wrap your head around that. Space time is the four dimensional continuum that describes how people see space, fusing one dimensional time and three dimensional space together to represent the space fabric that curves in response to celestial bodies. Yeah, my head's exploding right now.
A team of scientists or physicists rather studied the black hole, which is twenty six thousand light years from Earth. They said last month, the spinning black hole is dramatically dragging the space time in its vicinity. Hey, thanks again if you participated in postathon for coming down and joining us at the Anaheim White House or making a donation. You donated hundreds of thousands of dollars and tens of thousands of pounds of pasta, and we're on track to beat last year's
final tally. But we need your help still, so there is still time to donate. Postathon donations are being accepted through this Sunday. You can donate at pastathon dot com. You can donate at Smart and Final, or you can go to Wendy's and donate there. And of course, the FOK Reporter is going to be broadcasting live this Saturday two to five at Wendy's in Glendora. If you want to stop by, it's at seven oh six West Root sixty six. Neil Sevader would love to see you and accept your donation.
Also, auction items are still up for grabs. There's a lot of them and you can see them on postathon dot com and then just click on the auction items that are up for grabs, and those bids will be open until Saturday night at eleven forty five.
