You're listening to KFI AM six forty wake Up Call with me Amy King on demand on the iHeartRadio app KFI nd KOST HD two, Los Angeles, Orange County. It's time for your morning wake up call. Here's Amy Kick. It's five o'clock. This is your wake up call for Monday, June seventeenth. We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Amy King. Good Monday morning to you. Oh, get a great weekend. We had a great weekend. But you know how you have best slaid plans and then they get

monkey wrenches thrown into them. We had a little monkey wrench that doesn't have a name yet. My friend Amy was in town, Yes she's my best friend, and we'd go out and me and Amy and we were going shopping on Friday afternoon, and she lost her cat a few months ago. So we were talking about maybe getting kiddies, what that might look like, and I said, you know, why don't we just take a look at the Pasadena Humane website see who's available. Well, by about six o'clock on Friday

night, we had a new kiddie. So shout out to the folks at the Pasadena who means study so great. They're so great to work with, and my friend and her husband now have a new forever friend. And then we spent the rest of the weekend not only watching the cat run over a run around and terrorize my little apartment, also trying to find a name. It is as yet unnamed. Anyway, I hope your weekend was good and eventful or uneventful if you wanted it to be. Here's what's ahead on the

wake up call. Four hundred firefighters have been out on the lines for a more than fourteen thousand acre fire burning near Gorman. Evacuation warnings were in effect for areas south of Pyramid Lake between Old Ridge Route and the La County line, including the Paradise or Insist States. Officials say those living in that area need to be prepared to leave. That's just one of the fires burning in Socow. We're going to give you an update on all of them in just

a couple of minutes. The US will send another one point five billion dollars in aid to Ukraine. Vice President Kamala Harris made the announcement over the weekend at a global summit in Switzerland. Five hundred million dollars of it will go towards repairing and protecting energy infrastructure damaged during the Russian invasion. We're going to be talking with ABC's Tom Rivers more about Ukraine in just a minute, and

a peace summit this weekend. President Biden was not at that peace summit, opting for a fundraiser in la instead, and it was a good one money wise. The campaign raised about thirty million dollars at Saturday night's celebrity fundraiser in downtown la Tickets range from two hundred fifty dollars to five hundred thousand dollars. It was the largest Democratic fundraiser in history at six oh five. It's handle on the news Prime Minister Netanya, who has disbanded his Inner War cabinet.

What that may signal in the Israel Hamas war. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Quick rundown of the fires burning in southern California, and there's a bunch of them. A brush fire in the Gorman area north of LA's burned more than fourteen thousand acres. It started Saturday afternoon, Pushed by heavy gusty winds. The fire led to the evacuation of the Hungry Valley State Recreation Area and Pyramid Lake was

closed. LA County Fires Craig Little says conditions are very dynamic. All of the winds that we have going on right now are not consistent, so you know, one hour we could have a lull and then the next hour we could have roaring winds. The fire was only two percent surrounded as of last night. A fire that's burned about eleven hundred acres in Hisperia is twenty percent

surrounded. It started Saturday evening along Arrowhead Lake Road. A spokeswoman for CalFire San Bernardino said yesterday it looked like the fire was beginning to die down. She said crews were able to prevent it from passing over a bluff and heading toward the Arrowhead Equestrian Estates. The development was under an evacuation warning, which means people were told to be ready to go. A wind driven fire in

Lancasters burned more than five hundred acres. At least one home was destroyed yesterday. Some sheds and three RVs were also burned. The fire spread quickly because of those strong wind gusts. Officials say forward progress of The fire was stopped by six point thirty last night, and a brush fire in a remote area east of Moreno Valley has burned close to nine hundred acres. It's twenty percent surrounded. The fire was reported just after one yesterday in the area of Gilman

Springs Road and Alessandro Boulevard. CalFire says Cruise had to call in extra aircraft because the area where the fire was burning was difficult to get to on the ground. Six thousand Food for Less workers in Southern CA California, have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike, and San Diego union president Todd Walters says if they don't get a deal soon, workers could walk by midweek. We're hoping

today to get a deal. We're hoping to bargain where both sides may not be happy with the deal, but as long as we get something close we're comfortable with the will present itge the members. But if Kroger comes to the table and continues to play games, we will hit the street for ready to strike. Negotiations between the union and Kroger are expected to continue this morning after talks broke down over the weekend. Time to say good morning to ABC's Tom

Rivers Tom. Seventy eight countries have participated in a conference in Switzerland over the weekend. What were they talking about, Well, they're talking about trying to formulate some kind of a piece, if you will, deal between Ukraine and Russia. But the flies and the ointment. The big problem is Russia was not invited and another principal, China, as you know, had been helping

with some of the trade with Russia, decided not to show up. So yes, it's kind of a half full, half empty kind of a deal. Zelenski was there. He said, well, maybe it could be seen as the first step on the road to a settlement. But if you will, if you're looking for concrete impact from this, you got zero, okay, And so neither Russia or China, which are the two kind of protagon or antagonists in all of this. Did they just talk about what they want

and then maybe who do they present it to though? If those two players aren't even at the table. Well again, Putin on Friday outlined what he would like to see happen, in essence, the withdrawal of all of all Ukraine forces from the four provinces in the eastern side of Ukraine and the fact that he says Ukraine then should become a neutral, a NATAL member. Down the road, I took about ninety minutes. I was shot down by Jen

Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. So then they started this two day conference in Switzerland just talking, just cheerleading, if you will, the NATO side. So that's not going to get you what you want if you really want a cessation of the violence and the killings in Ukraine as we speak, and hasn't Putin kind of been saying that that's what he would be looking

for before or was this the first time that he's really articulated this. He's kind of intimated it in the past, but yeah, he's kind of laid it out the day before this two day conference, I guess fully expecting it to be shot down and as I said, very very quickly by NATO headquarters. So you know, never the Twain, she'll meet to very very different points of view on how to move forward. Hence nothing changes, Hence the war goes on. Yeah, kind of reminds me of what's going on with

Israel and MS where Mosco's here's what our plan is. But there's no way Israel's going to go for it. So it's kind of like, okay, whatever it was billed as a first step toward peace, is what's the next step or is there a next step that we know? Wait, there may may or not be. We don't know, Paul, you know, watch your space. There could be a gallery again. You know some of the

participants as well, just didn't have a good feel about things. India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, United Air Emirates, they sent foreign ministers, not presidents or prime ministers, and as far as you know, signing up to this thing, they said, now we're going to We're not going to sign this. It's not worth the papers written on. Maybe one day it will be, but at this stage, no, we're going to take a

pass. Okay. And you mentioned that not all the top top level officials were there, and one of the top top level officials that was not there was President Biden. Was there any kind of a pushback for that because he headed back to LA for fundraising. Well, again, if you think back a couple of months ago, this was kind of looking for some momentum and thought this could be something. And then as the weeks waned on. It

looked more and more like a deflated balloon. And of course, you know, the President has signed off for the US taxpayer more if you will funds for the military side in Ukraine than all of the other coalition of the willing participants have put together. So if it was it was really really important, you would have thought that he would be there. But by sending you know,

Vice President Harris there the signal as well. Maybe something can come out of this one day, but right here, right now, no, Okay, Tom Rivers, thank you so much for the information. We'll keep watching it. Take care all right, you too. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. The LAPDS

investigating the death of a little girl at Dockweiler Beach. Sources at the scene told KFI News the girl accidentally struck in a campground parking lot in numerous police cars could be seen, along with a white tent around the child's body. The LAPD says around five forty five Saturday evening, officers were sent to the twelve two hundred block of Vista del Mar after a nine to one to one

collar reported a car hit a pedestrian. Sources in the department told me the two year old girl was hit while her mother was moving an RV and when the mother heard a noise, she realized she'd hit the child. While it appears the collision was an accident, detective say they will do a thorough investigation. Steve Gregory ka if I News. A second man has been arrested for a fight at Lax that knocked out an elderly woman who was checking her bag's

curbside. Jason Gibbn's senior was booked on Friday on suspicion of felony battery. He allegedly rushed another man May thirty first and bumped into the woman, who was knocked to the ground. The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but has since recovered. Israel's military has announced a pause in fighting during daytime hours along a route in southern Gazita free up a backlog of humanitarian aid deliveries. So called tactical pause applies to about seven miles of road in

the Rafa area. The army said the daily pause would begin at eight in the morning and run through seven pm, and would continue until further notice. Finally, a big movie for twenty twenty four. Inside Out two has opened with one hundred and fifty five million dollars at the box office. Industry analysts

say that's the best opening of the year. Pixar's sequel to twenty sixteen's Inside Out deals with the emotions of a now teenage little girl and features the voices of Amy Poehler and Philip Smith, Diane Lane, Kyle McLaughlin, and others. And so I know that Nick went and saw it on Thursday, and Kono was taking the girls to see it over the weekend. So I wanted to ask both of you because I think we're going to get different perspectives. So Nick, first, what did you think of it? I thought it

was great. And now, granted we all talk about the hours that they keep here, but I fell asleep three times during it. So even though it's only nine eighty minutes, like we talked about with Jason Nathanson on Friday, for me, it was a bit slow in areas, but I still cried like a baby, So I mean, it still had all the fields, yeah, exactly, and it had all the feels, so I mean for me, but it also felt really really slow and some of the parts

just I could have done without. So okay, and you said it was this is actually classic Disney. It was really an adult movie, yes, one hundred percent of an adult movie. And the thing that I kept hearing throughout the theater two things were the kids were running around and very, very restless, and then a handful of times I kept hearing daddy, are you are you sad? Why are you crying? Mommy? Are you okay?

And that's all I heard all around me. So you had kids running around and were really restless, and then you had them checking in on their parents who were crying. So, oh my god. Okay, So now Kono went to the movie with kids. So what one would you think of it? And what did the kids think of it? Oh? I thought the same as Nick. Actually I felt like it was pretty slow in the beginning,

but they nailed it. They always nailed these emotions, which is I loved the first one too, inside out and then Yeah, my daughter who was three, it was her first theater experience with a massive screen and popcorn, and she loved it, and she watched the entire thing. She was yes and loved it. She took her bing bong, which she had from the first episode in the first movie, and she thought bing Bong was going to be in it, so she kept asking. She kept leaning over and

asking, where's bing Bong? Is bing Bong coming? And I'm like, Hannah, just maybe he might be coming. But then the character. I don't want to blow it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but there is a character that I think distracted her from bing Bong and it might be her new favorite. Okay, and what about your older daughter. The older daughter I think related to a lot of the emotions more than an actual child.

So my older daughters seventeen and I can't remember the character's name, but it's boredom, the actual care on Wei and I was like, they're the same, Like that's a seventeen year old today. Yeah, that's funny. All right. So you guys both liked it though it's both for you a little bit slow in parts, but overall liked it. Yeah. I can't. I like inside Out, all right, you know what. I am just

thrilled because it's like Jason and I were talking about on Friday. I think that Disney's had their movies always look great, but I think they've had a couple of misses, so I'm glad to hear that. You know, Inside Out is getting good reviews and it made one hundred and fifty five million dollars at the box office, so biggest movie of the year so far. So I think it's great, and now I get to go see it, and

I will take your recommendations and do that. A smoke advisory remains in place with the Santa Clarita Valley and Castaic because of the more than fourteen thousand acre fire and near burning near Gorman. The South Coast. AQMD says northeasterly winds are expected to continue pushing smoke from the fire toward the Santa Clarita and San

Fernando Valleys and parts of the La National Forest through this afternoon. Actually, Angelus National Forests, not the La Forest Police, are asking for your help in finding a man who escaped from the West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino County. He got out yesterday during an outdoor recreation period. Deshaun Champs is twenty nine, black, five eleven, one hundred and seventy pounds, with green eyes, a shaved head, and tattoos on his neck and head.

He's been held on attempted murder charges. Both the Biden and Trump campaigns have agreed to new rules for the first presidential debate. CNN announced. Both candidates have agreed that Mike's will be turned off during the ninety minute debate except when it's each candidate's turn to speak. We're going to find out more about the ground rules with ABC Stephen portnoy Cima coming up in about ten minutes at six oh five. It's handle on the news. Along with warnings on cigarettes,

the Surgeon General is now calling for warning labels on social media apps. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's Jim Ryan. Jim is jaws lurking off the beaches of the United States this summer. Yes, should we panic about it? Should we stay away from the beach? No? But yeah, they're always lurking out there in the water. They're always out there. Fishing is what they're doing out there. Amy. They're not looking for you

or me or anybody else in particular except those little fish. So if you go out to the beach along the Gulf Coast or over the Atlantic coast, even on the California coast, I assume you know pay attention to those flags that they post out there that the lifeguards have put up there. They talk about the rip currents and the water conditions and all that, but they are also flags that deal with the potential presence of sharks. So yeah, watch

out for that. Is there a shark sighting season? Yeah, and this is a little early. You know, we had those two shark attacks last week. Essentially, the two separate attacks that we yes on the Florida Panadle might have been carried out by the same shark. That's what the experts are

thinking right now. There were small schools of small fish that were schooling around that area at the time, and it's thought that shark was going in after the fish bit this woman and she lost her hand, as I understand it, but her life was saved by a doctor who happened to be on the beach their sunning himself and was able to save her life. And then a short time later, two teenagers were attacked not far away the same general beach

area there on the Panandle. But do you know where the shark bite capital of the whole world is? Is it Hawaii? Is it Australia, Is it the South Africa? South Africa. No, Felusia County, Florida. Oh really, yes, Felusia County, Florida as the most confirmed unprovoked shark attacks from eighteen eighty two to present, and in second place Brivarc County and then Palm Beach County. So it's not it's not, but you know the shore line there in Australia. It's not South Africa, it's Florida. But

yeah, so just watch yourself because it does occasionally happen. And if those are the shark bite capitals of the world, how many shark bites do we see per year on average? Do we know? Yeah? On average? If you're looking at the worldwide total last year, what did we see? We had one hundred and twenty alleged shark human interactions. I'm looking at the

International Shark Attack File. Yes, there is such a thing. The International Shark Attack File started in nineteen sixty and they saw a sudden and extreme drop off in shark attacks or shark sightings in nineteen sixty nine. Let's because funding was cut to this this thing. This organization only came back and then they started keeping up it. Anyway, last year sixty nine, unprovoked shark attacks, shark bites on people. Twenty two provoked bites, So only twenty two

worldwide provoked shark attack. What is it provoked? I mean like you go and you go in front of the shark, and I mean yes, kind of yeah, provoked bites. Here's the definition. Provoked bites occur when a human initiates the interaction with a shark in some way. It includes divers bitten after harassing or trying to touch sharks, bites on spear fishermen who are underwater, bite some people trying to feed sharks. Bites happening while unhooking or removing

a shark from a fishing net. So yeah, those are considered provoked bites. The unprovoked ones are like we saw on the beach last week. People

are swimming mining loan business and they come into contact with a shark. Okay, So I voted or not voted, but I said I thought it was South Africa because I was talking to somebody probably when't we visited there a few years ago that shark bites in South Africa had increased because they're doing like shark tourism and they put in those they put people in those shark cages, and then they chum the waters to try to track the sharks, and lo and

behold, the sharks are showing up. The sharks get chummy with those people, don't they. Hey. Yeah, okay, So if you're going into the water, is there anything you should do to make yourself less appetizing to the sharks? Well, well, not really. I mean they're not really going after you anyway, and they're going after those fish. And if there

are schools of fishing, they you should. You know, I don't know who's going to be fishing or rather swimming early in the morning, like at dawn or at sunset, but those are the times to avoid, really, because that's when these fish are schooling. So the middle of the day is your safest bet. Although those attacks in Florida last week happened in the middle of the day, but yeah, restricted to middle of the day, early afternoons something like that, that's going to be the highest sun exposure, but

your smallest shark exposure. Okay, and I know that the shark bite, I mean, it's just terrifying the thought of it. Yeah, But if you look at like just even the population of the United States of three hundred and thirty some odd million and there were less than one hundred bytes, right, right, And statistically you're okay, your statistically you're gonna be okay going onto the beach, enjoy yourself. But you're right, I mean, there's

this visceral feeling. This there's a fish in this water with me that could come over here and eat me or kill me, you know, or bite me's And you're right, it's scary. It's it's frightening to think about. After I saw Jaws, I didn't go in the pool at my house that whole summer, all right, Jim, or you take a bath after that movie. Well there's that too, Jim Ran, Thank you so much for the information. Now we can feel better about going in the water. Just

do watch out for the warning flikes. Yes, all right, thanks Jim, all right. A guy stuck in a chimney has been rescued in downtown LA. The fire department says the guy got into the four story chimney yesterday and an abandoned apartment building. Rescue crews had to break through a wall inside to slide the man down to the ground floor. He was taken to the hospital. A mountain lion's been found dead on the one on one Freeway and

a gore Hills close to where that wildlife crossing is being built. The Mountain lion was found early Saturday in the slow Lane near Liberty Canyon Road. Construction of the wildlife crossing began in twenty twenty two. It's expected to be done late next year or by early twenty twenty six. Can't happen soon enough for me. Researchers at u SEE, San Diego say nitrous oxide emissions have accelerated

climate change, with a growth of forty percent over forty years. The report found agricultural production contributed to seventy four percent of human driven nitrous oxide from nineteen eighty to twenty twenty, primarily through chemical fertilizers and animal waste on crop lands. The study, released last week by fifty eight researchers at fifty five organizations in fifteen countries, also found agricultural waste alone reached eight million metric tons in

twenty twenty, a sixty seven percent spike since nineteen eighty. Researchers say nitrous oxide from farming has a global warming potential about three hundred times more powerful than carbon dioxide Corbin Carson kf I News. Tonight, the Dodgers are in Colorado to take on the Rockies. First pitch goes out at five forty. You can listen to every play of every Dodger's game on AM five seventy LA Sports live from the Galpin Motors Broadcast Booth, and stream all the games NHD on

the iHeartRadio app keyword AM five seventy LA Sports. The largest of four fires burning in southern California has burned more than fourteen thousand acres near Gorman. Evacuation warnings were in effect for areas south of Pyramid Lake between Old Ridge Route and the LA County line, including the Paradise Ranch. Estate's officials say those living in that area need to be prepared to leave. The fire is only about

two percent surrounded. The Mother our a mother has accidentally apparently run over and killed her two year old at Dockweiler State Beach. LAPD says the mother was moving an RV on Saturday. She says she heard a noise and realized she had hit her two year old. The investigation is ongoing. Police are looking for a group of kids who attacked several people while riding e bikes in West

Ventura. Willie say the kids kicked and stepped on a homeless woman on Saturday night, through rocks another woman and spit on people they rode by at the Crown Plaza Hotel. So far, just a thirteen year old has been arrested. At six oh five, it's handle on the news, no surprise, the Biden campaign has launched a fifty million dollar ad campaign calling out former President

Trump as a convicted criminal. At five point fifty, we're going to be talking with the senior advisor on Wildlife Tracking for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Quite a mouthful, but it's about a new exhibit that you might see at LAX next time you fly in or out. We'll tell you what it is and why you're probably going to want to take a closer look. Really interesting stuff. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's Stephen Portnoy.

Stephen. In about a week and a half, the first presidential debate leading up to the twenty twenty four election is going to be held. A lot of planning going into it, So tell us what we know now, because they've kind of put out some of the ground rules ground rules were released on Saturday CNN, laying out the terms that the candidates have themselves agreed to. Two men standing at podiums. The position on stage will be determined by a

coin flip. The mics will only be on when a particular candidate is recognized. But I caution you amy to remember that in the elements of television production, we have two people on a stage not terribly far away from one another,

and one man's mic is on and the other is off. It could wind up sounding something like this if the other candidate is talking over the other, which is to say that you might hear the other man off mike and on the stage when one man is talking, you really can't tell that his mic is on because they turn the studio monitors, that is, the speaker's offs, to avoid feedback. So it's possible that if let's just say, as happened in twenty twenty, Donald Trump tries to interrupt or talk over Biden,

that it'll distract Biden and knock him off his feet. Biden goes to Camp David on Thursday to begin debate prep. There'll be no campaign staff all out on stage during the two commercial breaks because this is a now a for profit endeavor on the part of CNN, as opposed to a non partisan public service put on by all the networks and the Commission on Presidential Debates. No pre written notes or props, but candidates will be able to take notes during

the debate. It'll be a two minute opening answer, a one minute rebuttal, one minute response to the rebuttal, and then an extra minute to be used if necessary at the discretion of the moderator. So the idea is five minutes per subject. Okay. Who are the motor moderators again, Jake Tapper

and Dana Bash of CNN. Okay, so not exactly a Trump friendly line up there, which I'm sure they tell you not necessarily a Biden friendly line up either, but yeah, nevertheless, Okay, So you mentioned that there's no campaign staff allowed out on stage during those breaks in other debates. Has there been well in other debates and the main debates in the fall with the Commission on Presidential Debates. Uh huh, there is no break. Oh,

okay, and that's a key point. Also, no studio audience. But we've talked about this before, Amy, and that is the idea that this is this stereotype of these debates, the primary debates, the ones held prior to the conventions, the ones were Democrats versus Democrats and Republicans versus Republicans. Those have featured studio audiences because those again have been set up by individual television

networks, and they have had audiences in the fall. The debates that were most used to in the general election, they have had audiences, but the audience has been well healed corporate types and who have given their money donated to the Commission and been admonished by the moderators not to show approval or disapproval of any answer on stage, and that has been how it's been. There have not been outbursts in the Commission on Presidential Debate debates or even rockus applause.

And yet that misperception has led to the much said about the idea that there's no audience here. So fine, there's no audience, but we'll see how that affects the dynamic. It'll just be a more intimate television production. I think there have been more outbursts on stage than in the audience. One. Certainly that was the case in twenty twenty. Look, yeah, the first

of the two debates in twenty two twenty where ugly. It was an ugly scene because you had the two men on stage and Donald Trump would interrupt Joe Biden and it really upset and frustrated Joe Biden. In the end, I think you know, the main takeaway was it was an ugly night for Donald Trump, and in the second debate he performed better, but in one and rather handily when you look at it, certainly the national election results and in the states where it mattered. So let's see how it all plays out.

What an early debate. This will be ten days from now, weeks before Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee, and more than a month and a half before well, I mean Joe Biden gets his convention. The ideas the Democrats, to avoid missing an Ohio deadline, are going to do some sort of digital roll call that makes him the nominee. So there's no complication with the state of Ohio's ballot deadline. Okay, And in the past, as we've

talked about that, it's just it's only on CNN. Can if the other networks wanted to, could they rebroadcaster or does CNN have exclusive rights to the whole thing for forever. CNN has decided to allow other broadcast outlets to simulcast their debate live. ABC News will be among the networks carrying it on our air. Okay, well that's good then. Like you said before, more eyes right, tens of millions presumably will be watching next Thursday night, and

I will be one that one of them. I think it's going to be kind of musty TV for us. So do you have the advantage of time zone advantage that's good for you? Yes, exactly, and I can still get to bed on time exact. Steven Portnoy, thank you so much for the information. Like I said, I'm not missing it, and I bet a lot of people are going to want to see what they have to say. You bet. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of

the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Oh. Speaking of the presidential candidate's, former President Obama and a whole bunch of celebrities turned out for a fundraiser in downtown LA for President Biden. He warned supporters on Saturday to show up and speak up now and through election Day Biden's campaigns as the event raised thirty million dollars from day Democratic donors. Tickets for the event went from two hundred and

fifty dollars to his high as five hundred thousand dollars. Former President Trump was in Detroit over the weekend. He told black voters politicians need to stop the crime. He also repeated claims that the election process is rigged. A fire near the Hollywood Bowl and the John Anson Ford Amphitheater in the Hollywood Hills has been stopped at about three acres. The fire was reported shortly after two yesterday afternoon. It took more than one hundred firefighters less than two hours to knock

it down. One firefighter was hurt. They were treated for what the fire department called non life threatening medical problems. Some libraries in LA will double as cooling centers on hot days this summer. The program would operate at West Valley Exposition Park, San Pedro, Pacoima, and Chinatown. Yolena Zeltzer of the Southeast Asian Community Alliance in Chinatown says she's glad her neighborhood branch was Joseph.

The seniors that use the library for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter because they unfortunately have to make the choice to either pay rent by food medication or pay for heating and cooling. The locations were picked based on heat maps from UCLA and others. The city expects around eight extreme heat days during the season, and libraries would offer water, heat education, and extended Sunday

hours if necessary. Michael Monks KFI News. A smoke advisory remains in place for the Santa Clarita Valley and Castaic areas because of the more than fourteen thousand acre fire burning near Gorman. The South Coast. AQMD says northeasterly winds are expected to continue pushing smoke from the fire toward the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys and also parts of the Angelus National Forest through this afternoon. Saw the sunset last night and it was one of those hazy, smoky ones. Thankes

for a pretty picture, not good for your lungs. Governor Newsom has ordered flags at the state capital to fly at half staff in or honor of the La County firefighter who was killed in the line of duty Friday. Andrew Ponchius, a nineteen year veteran of the department, was killed when a front loader exploded at a quarry in Little Rock, southeast of Palmdale. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey says he's lucky to be alive after crashing his bike in Connecticut. He

says recovery has been brutal, but he's going to be okay. He posted pictures on social media of his bruised and battered body and his tattered helmet, so urged followers to always wear a helmet. We're just minutes away from a handle. On the news this morning, the wildlife crossing on the one on one can't open soon enough. A mountain lion has been found dead on the

freeway not far from the crossing in Agora Hills. Let's say good morning speaking of wildlife to Sarah Walker, who is the senior advisor on wildlife Trafficking for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Good morning, Sarah, good morning, how are you. I'm great. Your title is quite a mouthful. So it's a very long title. Yes, yes, so before a very very

complex problem. Right, So before we jump in, can you tell us just a little bit about your organization and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and what it does. Absolutely so The Association of theoson Aquariums, also known as AZA, is the a crediting body for more than two hundred and fifty facilities zoos and aquariums around the world, really primarily here in North America, and that includes facilities locally like the Los Angeles Who Aquarium of the Pacific, Cabrio

Marina Aquarium and others. Okay, and we love all those places. Yes's kind of excellence. Please go visit. Yeah, so we're talking to you today because there is a new exhibit from the La Zoo at the Tom Bradley International Airport the travelers are going to see as they move through Terminal four.

And it caught my attention because I've been to Africa a couple of times, and while I'm thrilled with the experiences and the animals and everything there, I am also horrified by the fact that people are still poaching and selling off for parts some of the most amazing animals in the world. Yes, many people are surprised to learn just how big of a problem this is. Wildlife trafficking is actually the fourth most profitable transnational crime in the world. It comes in

just behind human trafficking, the drug trade, arms trade. It's really a conservation crisis and it's going to take all of us to stop it from happening. And because consumer demand is really driving the crisis, the consumers are actually the ones who hold the key to stopping the culting. Okay, So the new exhibit at the airport is what's in that. Yeah, we're so excited about it. It's part of our Eye Travel for Wildlife initiative. It's the

fourth exhibit that we've installed in the country. LAX were of course very excited about since it's one of the busiest ports in the world roles and see the high number of live animals and illegal products coming in daily. And it's an interactive exhibit that educates people about wildlife trafficking in general, but also what products they might encounter while traveling, which products to always avoid, which products to

maybe question and ask a few questions about where that product came from. And also it's interactive and include several examples of actual products that have come illegally through LAX. Okay, so let's talk about the products. Where you said that there are products that are involved with wildlife trafficking, so it's not just smuggling live animals in and out of the country. It's also parts. It's yes,

it's a bolt. It's quite a large problem. It's live animals to fuel the exotic pet trade, but it's also parts which is then turned into products, various products. They can be the trinkets that you pick up, figurines, carvings become in the form of jewelry. You'll see them turned into shoes, wallets, you name it, traditional medicines. There's just so much out there as you're traveling the world that you will be exposed to and you'll

probably be offered for sale. And what we want the public to know is just because it's for sale doesn't mean it's legal, okay. And when you're talking about trinkets and that kind of thing, I mean immediately you go to ivory because that was such a popular thing and leaving our elephant population decimated.

So there's still a lot of ivory going in and out. Yes, absolutely, the elephants are recovering slightly because of conservation efforts, but we're still losing them faster than they can reproduce, so elephant ivory is certainly still a problem. We also see products made out of rhinohorn sea turtle shell, panglin skin. Many people don't know what a pangle it is. What they look like, Yeah, I know what they look like. They're weird looking things,

but very beautiful, yes, cute in a strange looking way. They're also known as scaly ant eaters. That's what I was going to say with armorn, that's right. And when scared they roll up into a ball and it makes it very easy for coachers just to pluck them, put put them in a bag, and then they're trafficked for a variety of products. But they're actually Panglins are the most widely trafficked mammal on earth. Okay, so from this exhibit, Sarah, what do you what are you hoping people are going

to take away? We hope people take away just a general understanding about wildlife trafficking, but more importantly tips and tricks. We really hope people will take to heart some of the things we're telling them to be on the lookout for

products to avoid. But most of all, we're hoping people walk away with a sense of agency that their individual actions matter and that day as consumers and travelers can actually stop this trade by not purchasing things to begin with, yeah, and what you don't know, you don't know, so once you do know, you can do better. Absolutely, absolutely, I think we had

our cut out a little bit. Sarah. If you're back, where can we find more information about your organization and what's going on to stop illegal trafficking for wildlife? Yes, thank you. You can visit I Travel for Wildlife dot org and you can read about all of the information we have in the exhibit. We of course hope you can visit it in person, but if you can't, you'll find a lot of great information on the website. Okay,

great, Thank you, Sarah Walker, appreciate it so much. I'm going to say your title once again because it's the longest that I've said in a long time Senior advisor on wildlife trafficking for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. And you can get more information I Travel for Wildlife dot org. Thanks

again, Sarah, thank you. I just think that's such an important thing because, like she said, you don't even realize some of the stuff that you're buying or taking out because it's pretty in their little trinkets and they're mementos of your travel, but they're also sometimes endangered species and the wildlife is too spectacular. We need to just be better and be smarter. That's what I have to say on that. This is KFI and KOST HD two Los Angeles,
