You're listening to camp I Am six forty the Bill Handles show on demand on the iHeartRadio f k f I and kost HD two Los Angeles, Orange County. Now that I prove wake up your host, Amy Kay, it's five o'clock. Good morning. This is your wake up call for Thursday, November thirtieth. I'm Amy King, thrilled that you're joining us this morning. Hey, we're going to go out and about and take southern California sleigh rides starting
today. We're going to go and check out some of the really cool things you can do for the holidays around southern California, and maybe some gift giving ideas. It might be not traditional, and I was reminded of that yes today because I went and got a massage. It was like it's time I need to pamper me. So I went and got a massage, and I was like, that would be a cool Christmas present, because you know, like people are now looking for experiences rather than things, and then you have
like someone like my mom who she kind of has everything she wants. And actually we were talking to Dean Sharp and he basically said, I kind of just go get the things that I want what you can't give things to? Are you why you can't? Or let me see let me rephrase. Wait, while you can always give things to people, you can't always give them experiences. So maybe that's a good way to go. I don't know,
just a thought. Uh, we're gonna mention pastathon. We've got over a million dollars in donations and there's still time for you to donate to make us hit our goal of beating last year by one dollar. So if you want to go to pastathon dot com, there are still auction items up for grabs and there's some really great ones, including going to Sea Dodgers game with Gary and Shannon, co hosting the John coblt Show with John Cobelt for an hour.
You can have Dean Sharp, the house Whisperer come whisper to your home. Lots and lots of really great things. Here's what's ahead on wake Up Call. The Los Angeles Police Department has more officers patrolling LA Live after a deadly shooting on Tuesday night. A man in his forties was shot and killed while he was eating at a soul food restaurant. The suspect got away. Police say the shooter knew the man he shot. Henry Kissinger has died.
The former Secretary of State was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in nineteen seventy three after he negotiated a ceasefire agreement between the US and Vietnam. He was one hundred. We're going to be talking more about the life and legacy of Kissinger with ABC's Stephen Portnoy. At five point fifty. Disney CEO Bob Iger says he will definitely step down when his contract expires in twenty twenty six. Took over Disney last year four a second time after Bob Chapik was removed by the
board. Iiger says he's going to be involved in the search for a new CEO to make sure things go more smoothly. Next time. At six ZHO five, it's handle on the news. Henry Kissinger, of course, has died. Bill's also going to be talking about that because Kissinger is both being honored and reviled. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Another bus carrying migrants from Texas has arrived
in downtown LA It was the twenty ninth bus to arrive since June. The passengers yesterday included twenty seven people from Mexico, ten from Venezuela, and some from Columbia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Prime Healthcare workers are set to protest outside their headquarters in Ontario over severe understaffing. The frontline workers are urging management to provide safe staffing levels and offer additional support. Last month,
about eighteen hundred employees went on a strike for a week. Executives and care workers are negotiating, but a second strike is planned and over the holidays if no progress is made. BA City Fire Department says it has inspected fifty sites that freeway underpasses, and Eric Scott says La Mayor Bass ordered the inspections because of the recent fire under the ten freeway in downtown La and we will assess sites to determine if they generate hazardous waste and per protocol, refer them to
the La County Fire Department for follow up. Scott says. Of the fifty sites they looked at, twenty three were referred to the state Fire Marshal for follow up. Scott says they're not responsible for state owned property under the freeway. But they felt obligated to take a look for any obvious violations. Steve Gregory kafin News, Israel and Hamas have agreed to one more day of the temporary truce. The agreement came just minutes before the ceasefire was set to expire.
The truce, which started last week as a four day cease fire, is now going into its seventh day. Guitar says it was extended under the same terms where Hamas will release ten Israeli hostages a day in exchange four thirty Palestinian prisoners. Sixteen were released yesterday. Let's now say good morning to ABC's Jim Ryan. Jim, could this be a merrier Christmas than normal for workers? Yes, well, it depends upon the profession, depends upon the company.
But overall, Alix is though more companies amy are offering bonuses. You're in, yeah, company bonuses to their employees. That depends again, though not talking generally about blue collar jobs. We're talking about white collar workers who work in specific industries. But ninety six percent of professional services company do plan to give out year end bonuses. According to Robert half An Associates the Staffing
company nationwide. That's up from seventy seven percent twenty twenty one and only fifty seven percent last year, So it actually appears to be gaining some steam the farther we get away from the pandemic. Ninety six percent, that's a lot. Yeah, And I remember years and years ago kind of every company used to give some sort of Christmas bonus, whether it was cash or a turk or something like that, and they largely just went away, you did,
You're right. I think that as corporate America kind of pulled in its rains just a bit, then those were some of the things. The first things that went, whether it was just sort of like in Christmas vacation, the subscription to the Jam of the Month club or whatever it was that Clark Griswold got got about that, yeah, or actual checks. You're right. It seems to have tapered off somewhat. But I think during the pandemic companies realized
that they were bleeding employees. They just couldn't hold on to the ones that they had, they couldn't attract new ones. A few months ago, you'll remember we had twice as many open positions as we did people willing and able to work those jobs, and so companies were offering up all kinds of incentives, including year end bonuses or mid year bonuses. So we maybe headed back in that direction, at least in terms of Corporate America parts of corporate America.
So they're seeing that they kind of have to suck up to the worker a little bit more because the workers are they're not putting up with stuff, they're just walking still. Sure, yeah, and it's been absolutely a job hunter's market for the last year, maybe two years really that you know, if you don't like the conditions where you're working, quit go work across the
street at another company. And that is starting to slim down somewhat. The job market is cooling off substantially partly thanks to the interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. That's their big lever on the economy, and it appears to be working. The gap between jobs available and jobs and people willing to work them is getting narrower, and so with that we might this may be the last year of really big bonuses or widespread bonuses. And do we know who's
most likely to see the bonuses the bigger small companies. I know you said it's not generally the blue collar things. But like which company, Like, if it's a small company, more likely to do a bonus than a larger company. Well, no, generally it's going to be the bigger ones. Essentially, if you look at the job category, it's education and government.
About ten percent of those workers can expect some kind of bonus. But if you move into things like pharmaceuticals, you know, drug agency, drug company reps make a lot of money in general, and they collect bonuses. At the end, twenty one point four percent of the pharmaceutical companies plan to offer bonuses to their employees. Software and networking about eighteen percent of those workers. Do I see radio on the list? No, unless they were kid the
sales. No, no, no way. All right, Well, here's hoping that as you're waking up with us this morning, that you are one of the ninety six percent who will get some sort of a bonus and take it for what it is. It's a nice gesture. Whether it's a turkey or cash or a gem of the month. Oh, you're onto something there, whether it's a big fat check several thousand dollars some percentage of your salary, or if it's you know, the fleece sweater with the company logo on
it. It's still a jesture. It says, yeah, we appreciate your work. Yes, all right, well, Jim, I appreciate your work every day. Always a pleasure to talk to you. Thanks so much for the information. Good curing me. All right, let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A woman with a knife has been shot by police in Koreatown. Police had been called out late last night about an assault with a deadly weapon. Officers say they
were confronted by the woman and that's when the shooting happened. They say she is expected to survive. The Lakenty Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a man whose body was found at a laundr park in Lawndale. Deputies were called to the park on reports of a man down. The man's body was found lying on the west side of the park with trauma to his head. The man was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday morning, just after six point thirty.
The medical examiner says the man's cause of death was blunt force. Trauma Detectives said yesterday the investigation is ongoing and no additional information has been released in Lawndale Chris Adler KFI News. The City of Long Beach is slowing working or slowly working, to bring systems back online after the systems were taken down because
of a cyber attack. The city confirms its data was stolen, which president of the Information System Security Association of LA, Richard Greenberg says does not inspire a lot of confidence in government. Nobody wants to be running a government where the constituents data is in their care and then all of a sudden it's released to the public or to the world. It's embarrassing. It shows a failure of due diligence. The city's online systems were offline for more than two weeks
because of the attack. The type of data that was taken isn't clear, but city officials say it did not appear to be a ransomware attack. Police in Newport Beach are investigating claims that an Oklahoma City thunder player was seen in photos with an underage girl. An anonymous user claimed in a now deleted post that twenty one year old Oklahoma City point guard Josh Giddy is in photos with a junior from high school. Reporters repeatedly asked Giddy about the allegation before Tuesday's
game, but he declined to comment. Giddy got booed every time he touched the ball. The player is from Australia but can be seen training in Irvine. Newport Beach police say they're seeking additional info, but media reports claim the girl and her family are not cooperating with police in Orange County. Corbin Carson kf I news, lawmakers in LA have unanimously approved a plan to have an
independent redistricting commission redraw the boundaries of council districts every ten years. The proposal is expected to appear on the November ballot next year, so you get to the side on that. Hey, the decision has probably been made, but we don't know yet who it is. But the Tournament of Roses is going to be announcing it's Rose Parade Grand Marshal tomorrow, so apparently it's been very suspenseful. Who will it be? And in years past cultural giants have been
the Grand Marshal. Walt Disney my favorite of course, John Wayne has been with a Grand Marshal. That was in nineteen seventy four. Carol Burnett love her Shirley Temple, Mickey Mouse, Peley, Kermit, the Frog. They've all been Grand Marshals. So what we do know this year is the theme is celebrating a world of music, the Universal Language, and the Tournament of Roses is thrown out a little hint and saying that this year's Grand Marshall is
one award away from getting the egot. That's the egot means you've won the Emmy, the Grammy, the Oscar, and the Tony. So whoever it is has won three of the four and so the OCI Register did a little prognosticating that's my big word for the day. And they don't know who it's gonna be, but here are a few people who could fall into that category or do fall into the category. So we'll have to wait and see till tomorrow. But could it be Cindy Lauper, she just wants to have fun,
Quincy Jones, fabulous, Bet Midler. It could be Cynthia Arivo. That's not as well known of a name, but she played Alphaba in the Wicked movie that's coming out next year, which I personally can't wait for. So that's gonna be cool. Lin Manuel, Miranda Share Sir Elton, John, Liza Minelli, Barbara Streissan or even Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. We don't know, but we'll know tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. I love the Rosebery. Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend their ceasefire by
another day. The agreement made just minutes before it was said to expire. Officials say getting more people out could become even more difficult because most women and children held by Hamas have already been released in swaps for Palestinian prisoners. Governor Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are facing off tonight in the Great Red Versus Blue State Debate. The two hour debates expected to hit hot topics like immigration, abortion, the economy, COVID, even Disney. You can listen to
the debate right here on KFI at six pm. It'll start during the Tim Conway Junior Show. The Tesla cyber truck officially hits the market today with a private event. The first one will be rolled off the line from Tesla's manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas. They're expected to cost about fifty thousand dollars. CEO Elon Musk says more than a million people have already pre ordered the cyber
truck. At six oh five, it's handle on the news. Speaking of Elon Musk, he has apologized for a tweet or an X, but he also told advertisers to go f themselves. So we'll tell you about that. Let's take a Southern California sleigh ride, shall we? So each week leading up to Christmas, we're going to take you out and about to share with you some of the really fun things you can go to do and see around southern California. Our first stop the La Arboretum for LightScape twenty twenty three.
We took a sometimes wild ride around the venue with the new CEO, Michael Displanes. Michael, what are people going to see when they take a tour around LightScape twenty twenty three. You're seeing the work of many different artists, many different talents. You're seeing seventeen miles of power cables, twelve miles of data cords. Can you imagine? I can't even miles of extension cords?
Okay, so we I want to say that we just came through snowflakes and here's probably the most recognizable thing at lights Scaping the Winter Cathedral stunning, right, hundreds of strings of holiday lights that are all in the shape of flowers, and the whole cathedral steps down. So you think it's an optical illusion, but it's not. It actually does get smaller and smaller. See it. Ohs. It creates the sense of like intimacy and wonder it, you
know, just like a great cathedral would. Okay, you know, in a great cathedral you feel amazed, yeah, but you also feel small and wonderful at the same time. I left. How many installations are out here, thirteen major ones, but lots of different lights along the way that highlight the incredible botanical collection this year. This is we were talking about France. This is Bouquet Dbaujoules by the art group Tilt and these are from France.
So these are just giant essentially floor lights right like a living room lamp. I think they look a little bit like square marshmallows. Oh I love that. So cool. The platforms you can stand on for you know, Instagram photos or selfies, and then you can sit on them and then very smartly it's near our first bathroom break Oh good, there's lots of those. You can hang out yeah, exactly. Okay, and as you're walking around now we're cheating a little bit. We're taking a golf cart. When you come
out here, it's a sled. Oh yeah, it's a sled. I like the way you're thinking. When you come out here, you will be walking. The trail is about a mile about a mile, easy walk, all on paved paths. Events rain or shine, but you know it never rains in southern California. Well exactly, this is rainbow trees, by the way, Rainbow trees and then our own trees and are an amazing botanical garden
collection. How much time does it take to put this thing together? So they literally start designing this year's show at the end of Lasteer show, and
then this summer I came on board in July. We were already zooming with Sony in London that actually puts this on about the elements and what new would come on and where they would go in the garden with the path would look like you know, we're we're almost one hundred and thirty acres with miles and miles and miles of trail, so we could put a lot of this anywhere. This is super cool, Okay, so it's gonna get loud and it's a little bit more modern. Love it. What's it called? Oh you
had to ask, I just passed the sign. Okay. It looks like a bunch of vertical light sticks and they're changing colors to the music. Correct. It's so fun. The friends would say, it's super cool, super cool, super cool. There are so many things to see, and there's a couple you're along the main path and then there's some offshoots onto side paths that we're not going to show you because we really want you to come out and see this for yourself. It's such a cool way to spend an evening
and get, you know, in the spirit of the eye. And then look at this. I mean, look at these allergies trees. These are stunning, stunning plant all lit to see. So you know, it's also part of what LightScape is, which is highlighting the incredible plant collection that's here at the La County Iarboretum. Okay, and Lightskate wouldn't be complete for the holidays without Santa, without a doubt, So Santa gonna be here. Well, he's not here every night. Okay. If you didn't remember, you
forgot he's super busy right now. Lots of toys to make, yep, lots of lists to go over who's naughty and nice? But he has promised a few visits to lights gape okay, and so how can people find out when you will be here? Arboretom dot org. Say, that's easy, Arboretum dot org. And just that quickly we're onto our next display. Now
we're coming up to the Arch of Light. This one's pretty cool. So Scott Gianelli is the artist, and it's synced to music, so it the lights will actually go with the tunes and you feel like you're a rockstar in your own concert. I love this and I love at the music. It's just like really high quality music part of the show. And again working with a partner like Sony, it's an immersive experience. It's not just walking through
and looking at holiday lights on trees. It's it's completely interactive. There's even a section of our drivers taking up for a second, we're going to jump out. We're going to jump out and walk there to the way. You know what, We have told you so much about this wonderful experience, but we really want you to come out and see it from yourself. We've got to do is we have to walk through the four eight hundred bulbs that are hanging. That you walk through, you literally like swim through them. Oh,
this is not your regular light show. It's LightScape twenty three, completely imagined. It's going on now through Christmas. You can go to Arboretum dot org to find out all about when you can come out, where you can get tickets. Don't miss this this holiday season. Thank you so much, Michaelcery. I tell you the flight displaze displays were really fantastic, and I also told you it was a bit of a wild ride. We lost control of our driver. But and again a reminder that when you go, you
will be walking through it. We wanted to try to get as much of the experience in to share with you, so we cheated a little bit and took a golf card. But you will be walking and it's really really great open select nights through Christmas the La Arboretum. It's LightScape twenty twenty three. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four our newsroom. A stretch of Laguna Beach has been closed because of a ninety
five thousand gallon oil sewage spill. The Orange County Healthcare Agencies Environmental Division says the spill yesterday happened when a main sewer line broke. Officials say the area will remain closed to oceanwater contact sports until the results of follow up water quality monitoring meet acceptable standards. A man who went on a month long crime spree
across La County has been hit with a ten year prison sentence. Themir Green robbed at least eight gas stations and stole a car using a bb gun. US Attorney spokesman here in McAvoy says Green led police on a dangerous chase earlier this year, during which he drove over ninety miles an hour, almost crashed into a bystander motor as, drove against oncoming traffic, then crashed into a curb. While Green was sentenced for eight robberies yesterday, prosecutors argued he committed
about forty robberies. Green has been in custody since April. Blake Trolley kaf I News. Last week we told you that the Stones were launching a new tour for twenty twenty four and it includes US stop at Sofi Stadium. So the original date for that is July twelfth, but apparently there's been a lot of demand, a lot of people want to go see the Stones, so a second show has been added. That date at Sofi Stadium is going to be July thirteenth, So some pre sales are going on right now, so
if you have access to that, you can get your tickets now. But both dates, July tenth and the thirteenth are going to go on sale to the general public tomorrow at ticketmaster dot com. They usually go on sale at ten am, but if you want to get your tickets, I get them quick. The number of hate crimes reported in La County is at its highest level in twenty one years. There were nine hundred and twenty nine hate crimes
in twenty twenty two, from seven hundred ninety in twenty twenty one. The report from the County Commission on Human Relations says the number of hate crimes has grown by one hundred and forty three percent since twenty thirteen. Henry Kissinger has died. The former Secretary of State was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in nineteen seventy three for negotiating an agreement between the US and Vietnam. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Medal of Liberty. He died at
home in Connecticut yesterday. He was one hundred. We're going to be talking more about Kissinger's life and legacy with ABC Stephen Portnoy At five point fifty. Disney CEO Bob Iger says he will definitely step down when his contract expires in twenty twenty six. He took over for Disney last year for the second time after Bob Jacob Chaipuk was removed from the board. Iigers says he's going to be involved in the search for a new CEO to make sure things run a
little smoother this time. At six oh five, it's handle on the news. Govinor Newsom has apparently had enough of the horse tranquilizer that's killing people on the streets. What he's going to do about that? Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's Jordana Miller from Jerusalem. Good morning, George, Dana. Sixteen more hostages were released, including a US citizen. Good news, Good news, and those were four foreign tie workers, but the bulk
of them twelve Israelis. Two that were released in a parallel deal with the Kremlin who were Russian Israelis, and ten others, including one American, And we're planning and hoping that tonight we will see more hostages turned over as Israel and Hamas extend this ceasefire by another day. There are another ten names on a list. We know that two of them are again Russian Israelis. The other eight we're not sure. We do believe though, that two Israeli Bedouins,
their minority here in Israel, two teenagers will be released tonight. Their families notified a short while ago that they are on the list. Talks are underway to extend the ceasefire again. Sexuary of Save Anthony Blincoln is here. It is one of the topics he is discussing with Israeli leaders. Patter and the United States, of course, have led these talks, facilitated the discussions and helped broker the ceasefires. It could be we will see another extension of
two more days, possibly three days. After that, it will get a lot more difficult because the people that are being held by Hamas are at that point would be just Israeli soldiers and men and women in their twenties and thirties, and it is that Hamas will demand Israel to release men who are in jailed here in Israel for various crimes that could include even murder, and then Israel will have to make some decisions about whether you know, they will do
that or if they will just begin the second phase of the war. Okay, And it seems like they're holding onto the Americans. Only two or three have been released, right, Yeah, only two really have been released.
There are a few others believe that some of the soldiers are dual American Israeli so that may be part of the reason they're not even eligible to get out in the way that this deal is now formulated, it's only women, children, mothers with their children, so you know, but you know, any Americans that Hamas has are of course among the most valued you know, quote
cards they hold in these talks and negotiations. Okay, Now, we had just we had heard too that the agreement to extend the ceasefire for another day came like minutes before it was supposed to end, like at seven am local time in Israel, that's right, And it was because of the list of who Hamas was planning to release. Do you have that information too, right?
Right? So initially Hamas p then to the list of five living Israelis and three bodies, and Israel said, you know, this violates the agreement completely. First of all, it's not a ten person minimum, and this deal does not include you don't get a ceasfire for giving us bodies. So you know, in the middle of the night, we understand that cutter and both the United States stepped in and put pressure on Hamas to change the list.
And we've seen this happen night after night. There was a list with you knows children and not the mothers on one day and Hamas said, we don't know where the mothers are. Well hours later, the mothers were released with the children because accordingity agreement, you can't separate the families. So in this case, you know, just minutes before seven am, they got a list that looked much more that would work. And even at that Hamas only
put eight names on the list. And because Russia has been negotiating parallel deals with Hamas, there are two more Russian Israelis coming out, so it fits the ten minimum, the ten person minimum. It's unclear if Israel's going to release based on this thirty Palestinian women and miners that are sitting in jail for various crimes or is it going to be twenty four based on just the eight that Hamas put on the list, right, it's a three to one ratio.
Yeah, it just seems like it's this big, potential deadly game of chicken, and it's just I wish they'd figure it out and get this taken care of. But they are. They are making steps, so that's good. So Jordana Miller, thank you so much for progress. Yeah, we like progress, all right, take care we do. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Police patrols have been increased in San Dimas in a neighborhood where a man was fatally
shot inside his garage. Eli like Keunty Sheriff's deputy say the killer Tuesday was possibly a follow home robber. Neighbors say the homeowner was shot while in his tesla, and Ant says the man killed had a wife and two children. A driver wanted for a fatal hit and run and Silver Lake has turned himself in. Police say the guy was driving on Sunset Boulevard near Edgecliff Avenue earlier this month when he hit a man riding a scooter. That man died at
the hospital. The driver turned himself in in Monday and was released on one hundred thousand dollars bail. Irvine is looking for a temporary amphitheater to keep live music in the Great Park until twenty twenty seven, when a permanent venue is finished. Irvine's Melissa Hale says the current proposal is a venue on the North
Lawn with a stage that faces away from nearby homes to reduce noise. There is some concern about if we do put it in another field in the Great Park, is that going to impact youth activities or programs and reservations that currently take place in those fields. Hayley says the city also needs plans for parking, bleachers, sound equipment, traffic studies, and an operator to run the venue. A different temporary venue closed last month because of a construction on other
attractions in the massive Great Park extent expansion. Okay, as you may have heard, the great Red versus Blue state debate is happening tonight. It's Governor Newsom versus Governor DeSantis of Florida. It's going to happen in Georgia, and you can hear the debate live on KFI. It starts at six pm, so join Tim Conway Junior for that. But here's a way you can make a debate very fun. There is the great Red State versus Blue State debate. Bingo. I found my Bingo card on the La Times website, and
so obviously Bingo. So anytime they talk about the topic that's listed on the Bingo card, you get to market off. So what are they going to be talking about? According to this Bingo card, They'll be talking about Trump, freedom, an abortion ban, Kamala Harris, the exodus from California January sixth, twenty twenty election results, smash and grab, robberies, taxes,
Fentanel sending migrants to California. Disney love this one, defecating in the street and the quote I'm actually a border state governor and then the center, which is the free Square is woke. I think this is going to make the debate even more entertaining. Again, I found this one at La Times, and I think you can just google it and find Bingo car cards everywhere.
Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend their ceasefire for one more day. The agreement made came just minutes before it was set to expire at seven am local time. Officials say getting more people out could become tougher because most women and children held by hamas have already been released in swaps for Palestinian prisoners. Governor Newsom and Florida Governor Ronda Santis are facing off tonight in the Great Red Versus
Blue State Debate. The two hour debates expected to hit hot topics like immigration, abortion, the economy, COVID, and Disney And if you just heard it in our last segment, you can download your debate bingo card online. You can also listen to the debate right here on KFI starting at six pm during the Tim Conway Junior Show. Governor Newsom is going to help flip the switch to light the Capitol Christmas Tree on Tuesday. The sixty seven foot tall
red fur has been in place in Sacramento all month. It's being decked out with ten thousand led lights and two hundred hands ornaments. It'll stay up until early January. We're just minutes away from handle. On the news this morning, Elon musk Is apologized for a tweet, but also told advertisers to go f themselves. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's nationals. Easy for me to say. Let me start over ABC's national correspondent, Stephen Portnoy,
Good morning, Stephen. We just got the news yesterday that Henry Kissinger has died. He was pretty much a powerhouse in his day. Certainly was a sort of emblematic of American power in the second half of the twentieth century. Think of the words real politique, datante, shuttle, diplomacy. These are words that Henry Kissinger helped bring to the American consciousness as he served as Secretary of State and National Security advisor to Richard Nixon and continuing on through Gerald
Ford's presidency. And this is a period of time where the United States was winding down its engagement in Vietnam, when it was re engaging with China, and so Henry Kissinger was behind so much of that reshaping the world, sort of viewing the world as a giant chess board with the great world powers moving pieces on the board with strategy. The other side of that is that so many pieces on the chessboard were pawns. And while his legacy is a giant
of diplomacy is certainly a big part of it. So too is the idea of him, you know, using American policy to step on the interest of smaller countries no longer in vogue in world affairs, and some of the things that he was accused of is essentially being a war criminal, presiding over the American bombings of Cambodia and Laos, supporting military coups against the elected governments in Chile and Argentina because the fear was that those countries were getting too close to
Moscow. So it's a mixed legacy. This is a man who with his family, escaped Nazism in Germany, came to this country, and you know, dove deeply into the national security establishment, and through the Kennedy and Johnson years and into the Nixon and Ford era, really became a master of American diplomacy, and in the years after for decades advised presidents of both parties. I saw him in the Oval Office with Donald Trump and never lost his intellect,
dying at age one hundred. Just last month, he was on stage in New York talking about American Chinese relations, opining about Israel Hamas War, talking about US involvement in Ukraine warning about the risks of AI when it comes to the control of the nuclear weapons stockpile in the world. So this was a man who, to his final weeks of life was really deeply engaged in
world affairs. Yeah, and you know, so it's like nice to see that because you hear so many people who are in decline as they get older and stuff, and like, he just kept living his life to its fullest until the very end. So writing books at age ninety nine, Yeah, well makes me feel like I'm coming up just a little bit short. Okay, let's move on now to Representative George Santos. What's expected to happen to him today? Well, today is the debate in the House on the question
of whether he should be expelled. The vote likely tomorrow. George Santo's last hour this past hour gave a news conference in which he says he expects to be ousted by the required two thirds vote. He says he won't resign because if he leaves, they win. He says he's being bullied out, that the House is embarking on a dangerous step, getting ready to oust a member
who merely stands accused of crimes and hasn't been convicted a trial. The accusations involve a twenty three count federal indictment, ranging from money laundering counts to identity
theft. It's alleged that he stole his donor's credit cards. He's also the subject of a skating House Ethics Committee report, which alleges that at a time he was destitute, he claimed to have money he didn't have during his campaign, and used campaign cash to pay for such things as his rent, botox treatments, Only fans subscriptions everything weekend getaways, and his fellow New York Republicans have been at the vanguard of calls all year for him to be ousted.
The question is whether Republicans will stand with the idea that it's not the right move to oust someone who merely stands accused but hasn't been convicted a trial. The trial in New York Federal Court is pending, but it hasn't yet begun
in earnest and we'll see what happens. But yesterday House Speaker Mike Johnson said he had some concerns and reservations about moving forward, and yet he would allow members on the Republicans side to vote their conscience, which is to say, no repercussions if you vote to oust a fellow Republican, and the political implications are pretty big because they have such a slim majority. This would knock that
majority down even a little bit more. The current majority for Republicans, the margin is four votes, and if Santos is ousted, it goes down to three. And the likelihood is that a Democrat would probably be elected to that seat in a special election which would be held in the coming months. Because this New York and is so heavily democratic. Well, I mean, look, it was a swing district in the first place, and the idea that
you know, but look, it is what it is. But the question for Republicans today is whether they want to continue to associate themselves with George Santos because the risk for those fellow New York Republicans is they might be more vulnerable in their own districts because they could be tied to him by Democratic opponents. And still Portnoy, Portnoy, you are Portner, and still Santos is defiant.
He's like, I'm not quitting, which is so different from how politics used to be, like when they had these huge scandals they'd step down. Shame is very much missing from our national culture and certainly our national politics. And George Santos is not a shame he, in fact is he presided today for about a half hour nearly in this news conference out outside the capitol, conducting an orchestra of reporters, and he said he'd be inviting more to his
office later today to do for there. So he's not leaving the States. He's using this moment of the spotlight to the extreme. All right, we'll have to wait and see what happens. Thank you so much. As Stephen Portnoy, I don't know what I'm doing with your name today, but I'm just studying you and me I've done it too. All right, thank you so much. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four our newsroom. The La County Human Relations Commission says nine hundred
and twenty nine hate crimes were reported last year. That's an increase of eighteen percent from the year before. The report shows Blacks were not only the number one target of hate crimes overall, but the number of crimes against that demographic overshadows the proportion of population of Blacks in the county and Natal Latino. Latina hate crimes also had the highest rate of violence ninety three percent of any of
the visual ethnic ruts. The Commission's Robin Thomas says there were forty religion based crimes last year, and the largest number of hate crimes happened in the metro region, including West Hollywood Boil Heights in the San Fernando Valley. Steve Gregory King if I knew, and the LA City Council's approved a law that would require airbnb hosts to get a police permit. The permits are intended to address
issues with party houses and proper parties that tend to attract rowdy behavior. at the meeting Tuesday, the permits will require fingerprinting and criminal background checks. Permit violations could cause permits to be revoked.
