Amy King. Thanks for getting your day started with us today. I am so worried right now that it's going to be one of those days because I was getting ready doing kind of last minute prep for the show, and producer Anne and I were talking about why we are both singing All by Myself by Celine Dion, and it's because George Nori was playing it during Coast to coast
if. Apparently that's one of those earworm songs. So I'm singing that and getting my oatmeal ready and I go to put it in the microwave and dumped it all over the place. So it's a mess in the kitchen, so be careful if you go into the kitchen. I tried to clean it up, but I was like, I gotta go and start the show. So and did you know that spilled oatmeal that has not been microwaved looked very much like vomit. It's not a pretty figure. So let's just hope that today
doesn't go down that road. Is that going to You're here, I'm here, We're all here getting our day started, and it's someday and it's almost Christmas. Here's what's ahead on wake up call. The California High Speed Rail Project's going to be getting more than three billion dollars in federal money to continue construction in the Central Valley. President Biden says he's not sure he'd be running for reelection if it weren't for Donald Trump. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Actors have approved the contract that ended the one hundred and eighteen day SAG after strike against
the major studios. Seventy eight percent of members voted for it. ABC's Jason Nathanson says while it is a clear majority, it's not as overwhelming as the
ninety nine percent approval rate when the Writers Guild voted on their contract. Turnout from the actors didn't exactly pack the House thirty eight percent of sag After members ended up voting, But the union is in celebration mode, declaring in their statement that the deal includes more than a billion dollars in new compensation and benefits. arrests of two students who took loaded guns to school. The school was put on lockdown yesterday morning after police were called on reports that another student was on campus with a gun. This freshman says the student was reportedly trying to trade weapons with other students. I'm praying for everybody safety and you know, just hoping this can like stop ready. Police say they will be taking safety measures while the school is closed, including a K nine weapons and explosive sweep of
the campus. The school is expected to reopen tomorrow, and police say there's no evidence of a planned attack. Chris Adler kf I News the fourth Republican presidential debate for the twenty twenty four elections being held at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Denny Lane died this week after a battle with lung disease. He helped form Moody Blues in nineteen sixty four and then joined Paul McCartney informing Wings in
nineteen seventy one. He played with Wings for a decade on hits like Band on the Run and Jet. He was seventy nine. Okay, now, let's check in with ABC's Jordana Miller in Jerusalem, and Jordana before we start talking today, I want to I was thinking last night that we talked to Jordana Miller an awful lot, and I think it's important to hear what's going on in Israel, because as the news cycle starts to change, I think
we shift our focus to other things. And Israel just had its own nine to eleven, and I don't want to shift the change away just jet. So that's right, that's the way they talked to yourself. Well, I
appreciate that. You know. Statistically, I think someone actually crunched the numbers here in Israel, not surprising, and I think, like, statistically, it's as if we had fifteen nine elevens for the population, given how many people were killed in Israel's population, So imagine on you know, nine to eleven if we lost forty five thousand people instead of three thousands or nearly two
thousands. You know, it is a country that's still traumatized, and you know, I think one of the headlines today is the mounting evidence of sexual systematic sexual assaults that AMAS carried out on October seventh, the widespread rate that was carried out. You know, there are now there were a handful of survivors who were simply too traumatized, and they don't they're not really talking about
what they saw. But there are forensic experts and others that are collecting and documenting the evidence, and they say, you know, the bodies that they found, women and girls, many of them, you know, naked from the waist down, those signs of sexual assault, even pools of sperm, boken, pelvic phones, you know, mutilated genitalia. These are things that are so difficult to talk about and report on, but they are part of the horror and the savagery of Hamas's attack on October seventh, and you know,
women were assaulted sexually. And now today we're hearing the first reports from those who are examining the hostages that came out of captivity last week. There were over one hundred and there were you know, over there were a lot of women and children that came out and at least ten of them, and in the group are not just women, but men. Were sexual assaults that
had signed them sexual assaults. And this I'm sure only the beginning of what we're going to hear about, and it is why Israel is so concerned about the women that are still in captivity. There's twenty of them, five female soldiers and fifteen civilians. And weren't those the original releases that were planned were to get all of the women and children out and then when that fell apart,
it just kind of left them high and dry. So are there any negotiations going on now or is it still that Amasa has walked away and they're saying we're not negotiating until the war ends. Well, I think publicly Hamasas were not negotiating until the war ends. But we understand the contacts with the mediators Cutter in Egypt and the United States are ongoing for any at the moment
that maybe Hamas will change the mind. But you know, the Israeli Prime Minister believes that, you know, the closer Hamas you know, reaches, the closer Israel gets to defeating Hamas or possibly even just killing the Akassinoar or the top of months leaders, maybe they will change their mind and negotiate and release the rest of the captives. There's one hundred and thirty eight, eight of them are Americans, and you know the hostages that were that were kept
for over seven weeks. You know, they describe all kinds of abuse, emotional, physical abuse, and even with the children. Some children were burned, you know, kind of like cattle. In case they tried to escape, they'd be able to you know, be identified. You know, they were putting children in solitary confinement. There was a woman who had three year old twins. They took one of the twins away for like weeks and then brought her back miraculously. I mean, these are horror stories. And obviously
the staged Hamas videos by see you later. It was great hosting you you know those yeah fall flat. Okay, So that will hope that the talks continue, even if it's not publicly talking. But we want to talk just briefly too about that. Israel's troops have now entered Gaz's second largest city. So where is that in. What's the latest on the fighting there? Yeah, so Israel has entered the city of Communists. It sits in the southwest
part of the Gaza Strip. It is a Hamas stronghold. Military analysts expect it'll take the Ausralia Army a couple of weeks at least maybe three, maybe four weeks to really significantly damage hamasa's military capabilities there. There are tunnels, it's believed Hamas's leaders are there, possibly some of the hostages as well.
And Israel moved on Communists a little quicker than many of us expected perhaps because you know, there this cannot be an open ended war and still have American support, so you know, as will maybe speeding up its war plans.
And it is complicated. This part of the war is complicated by the fact that there are one point eight million gossms just to the east of Conunists, a little to the south and a little to the north, and that you know, Israel says it's working with precision and caution and dropping leaflets and has an interactive map online to you know, notify civilians where it's coming, et
cetera, et cetera. Having said all that, it's hard to move around the godless strips when you're terrified they're going to get killed in the process, right, you know, so you know, and are these true safe zones where there's no fighting. No, they're really defined as safer zones. So no, we're bound to see the civilian casualty number five. Okay, Well, we will be watching and we will be sharing your reports because, like I said, I think it's important that we keep our focus on this and
what's going on. Thanks so much, Jordana Miller, Thanks, thank you. Talk to you soon. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. LA County Sheriff Luna has reviewed his first year in office. The sheriff says he's met or exceeded most of his goals, including the reduction of in custody uses of force. We've reduced force in the jail over the last year by thirty one percent, Luna said
yesterday. He's also targeted so called deputy clicks, but still has some work to do. There has been a challenge here with a very small percentage of our employees with deputy gain. The shriff says he's also worked on improving relationships with all the county supervisors, and he says it seems to be working. His department's budget just got a boost. Steve Gregory k if I knows La City Council's approved emotion to ban rodeos in the city. Councilman Bob blumenfeld Field
says the restriction is aimed at preventing animals from being tortured. This is not about the cultural issues this is and it's not about horse riding. It's about stopping animal cruelty. The city council voted unanimously yesterday in favor of amending city law to define and prohibit rodeos as well as harmful rodeo related practices. The
Council says there will be some exemptions for certain cultural and traditional events. The Air Force has identified the eight service members killed when an Ausprey military aircraft crashed off the coast of Japan. One of those killed last week was thirty four year old pilot and flight Commander Major Luke Unrath from Riverside. The remains of just six of the service members have been found. So far, three have been recovered. The Air Force says the two lost crew members were unlikely to
have survived, and the search for their remains continues. House Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans are blurring footage from the January sixth attack at the Capitol before releasing into the public because they don't want people retaliated against and charged with crimes. Johnson, who was involved in efforts to overturn the results of the twenty twenty
elections, says people should do their own research into the insurrection. He says he's releasing the footage to counter the January sixth Committee's presentation of the riot Hollywood actors have voted to ratify their new three year contract, putting the one hundred and eighteen day strike to bed. Voting ended last night. Seventy eight percent of sag after members voted in favor of the contract that includes AI protections and
a seven percent increase in minimum pay in the first year. A second student at Redondo Union High School has been arrested for bringing a loaded gun onto campus. The fifteen year old was arrested yesterday police who are going to be searching the school today to make sure there are no other weapons at the school. Classes are canceled today. Researchers say today's earthquakes may actually be after shocks from
quakes that hid in the nineteenth century. Researchers with the U. S US Geological Survey Seismic Or say seismic activity can be traced back to before there were seismographs, and suggested that understanding quakes from the eighteen hundreds will help us prepare for large earthquakes to come. At six o five Tandle on the News, Republican lawmakers walked out of a meeting over aid for Israel and Ukraine after things became heated yesterday. Right Now let's say good morning to the host of Rich
on Tech on KFI and KTLA tech reporter Rich DeMuro. Rich, we're playing chicken this morning. Good morning to you, Amy. How are you? I'm great, but I want to find out about this chicken. You're doing a segment on this on KTLA. I am yes, and the chicken puns are a plenty. So this is a startup out of Austin, Texas named
coop Coop and they are creating a smart chicken coop. So it's basically a backyard chicken coop, you know, wireframe kind of doghouse for chickens, but it has cameras in it, and those cameras have AI features so that can detect predators when the eggs are laid, all kinds of things. You can watch the chickens from your phone. It opens and closes the doors so they
can roost that night. I mean, it's really pretty wild. The startup is from a guy who previously created a startup he sold that would do on demand smartphone repairs, so like basically they would come to your house to do iPhone repairs, like an uber of smartphone repairs. Okay, and one of my I know, one of my good friends of her ears just perked up because she's got chickens in her backyard. She's not here in LA, but is chicken cooping common in the Los Angeles area. Well, that's the whole
point of this startup is they want to make anyone a backyard farmer. And they believe that with the right equipment and the right tools and the right technology don't make this process much easier, and people will kind of grow to love the idea of having you know, fresh eggs and also the you know, hanyon ship of these chickens in their backyard be more connected to nature. I interviewed someone in Los Angeles that you know, raises these things the old fashioned
way here in town, and he loves it. He he has nine hens and just loves hanging out with them and feeding them and everything that comes with it. And of course the lessons for his kids about nature. I love that. And so that they're having an app. Is there a price tag for it? Yeah? The coop is about twenty five hundred dollars plus Yeah,
plus a monthly monitoring fee. This is serious, but you know you're gonna get free eggs for life, basically, and I did, Amy, I did try a farm fresh egg for the very first time in my life. I was a little hesitant, and I will say it was absolutely delicious. You're worried about a farm fresh egg. I don't know. I'm Why would I be concerned about a fresh egg? I don't know, but I
was. And city boy, yep, exactly. I've never gotten my eggs anywhere except the grocery store, and so it seemed weird to get it out of a chicken. Okay, well, that actually sounds kind of cool. So it's cool. It's like I was tempted, Amy, I'm tempted to get this, I really am. And I thought my wife would be totally against it. And she's like, that looks really cool. Would you get that? I was like, oh my gosh, I thought you'd say no. But I at the end of the day, I don't know if I
want to have this. Well, I would tell you my friend who has chickens. She is like the people you're describing. She loves them. She loves plays with them, The dogs chase them, they do their thing. She loves it. Yeah, I could I see the appeal. Let's put it that way. Okay, Uh, talk to us about Beeper bringing I Message to Android. Okay, this is pretty much the biggest story in the
tech world right now. It is wild A company, a startup named Beeper has come up with an Android app that pretty much brings I message to Android. What does that mean? Different than what we talked about a couple of weeks ago. It's the same company, Okay, but now they came up with a new app called Beeper Mini, and it's a lot easier, it's a lot simpler, and it only does I message. The other one did everything you know, your LinkedIn your Twitter messages. It was like an all
in one message app. This is they reverse engineered how Apple's I message works. And so the thing is, it works exactly the way I message does. Like you send a message to an iPhone from an Android, it looks just like an I message, It acts just like an I message. They're not doing anything sneaky or nefarious. They're literally just interfacing the way Apple does. But of course, amy as you might expect, Apple probably doesn't like
this. But from what I understand, all the technical capabilities, they're not really doing anything differently than what Apple's doing. So it would be really tough for them to shut this down, and so this is like in the tech world, we're just kind of watching this like, wow, this company is really like they're like, this is David versus Goliath, right, Yeah, they are charging two dollars a month for this though, So and I tried it and it's it really does work as advertised, okay, And you can
find it at Beeper Yeah, Beeper Mini, that's what it's called. Okay. And then before we run and I hate that we run out of time so quickly. We can now watch Jimmy Stewart reading a new bedtime story or listen to him reading a bedtime story. I know you have some experience with you know, voiceover work and all that stuff, so I thought this was
a good one for you. But you know, Jimmy Stewart has not been around for a while, and everyone knows his voice and of course his likeness from It's a Wonderful Life, Well he has uh they've used AI to recreate his voice with his family's permission, and he's now reading a bedtime story and
of course it's in that warm Jimmy Stewart voice. And I listened to the intro to this and I literally got chills because it's so realistic and it's so wild to think that this person is no longer in our world, but there is new content from this person and this is just the beginning amy with all this AI stuff. And I know you probably have some strong feelings on that, but it is it is pretty wild that this is a thing. Yeah, And is the story available? I mean, can you go find it
now or is it ending release? It's through this app called Calm. I don't know if you've heard of that, but you know, it's like that relaxation app. So it's a sleep story. You know, they have a bunch of them, and a lot of celebrities read these things. But you know, to have a celebrity that's passed read a story that's new is pretty unique. Wow, so cool. So it's one of the things that like I'm excited about AI but then also still trependacious about the whole thing. Yeah,
I mean, you know, yeah, it's pretty wild. I mean, you could regular people can recreate their own voices to say forever at this point, I mean, it's pretty wild. Yeah. Okay, rich Demiro, thank you so much for your information. Of course you can hear rich on rich on Tech here on KFI Saturdays from eleven to two. He's got all the good things and it is so good at explaining it to so my
head doesn't hurt, which I appreciate a lot. Also, you can follow Rich on Instagram at rich on tech is website, rich on tech Dot TV. Thanks Rich, Thanks Amy Amy It What am I on? I'm on all things streaming movies, books, documentaries, TV shows, series and the reason I'm on it is because there's so much content out there you just don't even it's hard to choose what to watch. Sometimes it's new stuff, sometimes it's old stuff that you missed. This time it's something new. It's Candy
Cane Lane just in time for the holidays. It's the new movie with Eddie Murphy. You can see it on Prime Video. It also stars Tracy Ellis from Blackish. So Eddie Murphy's character lives in a neighborhood that goes all out for Christmas. Sound interesting so far, And this year Eddie Murphy really wants to win, and for reasons you learn very early on in the movie.
He needs to win the neighborhood's annual Christmas home decorating contest. So you add in a little magic, and he finds himself face to face with a mischievous little Elf that can give him the goods to do it. Of course, there's a hitch, there's a price to pay if he doesn't live up to the conditions. And I had really high hopes for this movie. I thought it would be just a fun, cool Christmas movie. It's cute at times.
Overall it's forgettable. And I'm very sad to say that because I love all things Christmas, and I love Christmas movies, and I'm waiting for the next great Elf movie or something like that. But I'm glad it was streaming as opposed to one that I would have paid for in the theater. Eddie's great. He's always fun to watch, but I don't find myself cheering him on in this movie, and I don't really care what happens. Although it's a Christmas movie, so you kind of know how it's going to end,
I can. I'm just gonna guess that this one won't be a holiday classic. It may not even be available on streaming after the Christmas season. It was just kind of forgettable. Some fun special effects, just not great. So Candy Cane Lane if you don't have anything else to do, or maybe you just need a little distraction. Okay, it's some prime video, but it's not a must watch for me at all. Let's get back to some
of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Faculty members at cal State la are set to hold their one day strike in a fight for a new contract. The strike's been going on all week at different cal State campuses, including at there'll be at cal State Sacramento tomorrow. The FBI says some scammers in Romania have been busted for skimming ATMs in southern California.
Officials here say agents in Romania went to eighty four locations and arrested forty eight people and seized eleven vehicles along with a million dollars worth of various currencies. During the three year investigation, the FBI said it also seized eight thousand stolen credit card numbers that belonged to US citizens and at least a million in cash

Redondo Union High School has closed its campus for the day following arrests of two students caught with loaded guns on two different days. This freshman says, school officials have been very quiet about what happened,
so for I note that this was the second attempt. Someone came onto campus with a firearm, and I guess they were trading firearms with another student. Police arrested the first student Monday, the second student yesterday morning after the student ran away. Police say the school is going to reopen tomorrow following a K nine Weapons and explosives sweep of the campus. An annual report on the health of Kids in Orange County shows progress in health insurance access and a reduction in
child poverty, but it also poses some other concerns. Officials say for the past three years, the reports focused on effects of the pandemic, but the next step is to access the longer term impacts and underlying inequities that were exposed. They say. The report raised issues related to declining English and math skills, rising suicide and depression rates, and school non attendance. The owners of a funeral home in Colorado accused of abusing corpses, laundering money, and foregoing

A second student at Redando Union High School has been arrested for bringing a loaded gun onto campus. The fifteen year old was arrested yesterday. Police are going to be searching the school today to make sure there are no other weapons. Classes are canceled for today. The La City councils moving forward in its efforts to ban rodeos
in the city, claiming they are inherently cruel to animals. Ban would stop harmful practices, techniques and devices, or rodeo related events. There would be exemptions for some cultural and traditional activities. We're just minutes away from handle on the news this morning, seven million, twenty three and meters users have had their information compromised in a hack. We'll tell you about that right now. Let's say good morning to the President and CEO of the Inland Valley Humane Society
and SPCA, Nicole Bresciani. Good morning, Nicole, Good morning. Wanted to have you on this morning, Nicole, because we've got a big problem in our shelters. They're full, yes, yes, and we feel it every day. So tell us about what's going on at animal shelters, not only in the Inland Empire, but also across the country. Yeah. I mean, we've just hit this perfect storm where we came out of COVID and there were you know, diversion of veterinary supplies, span neuter was not considered
essential, and so you have this population explosion. We're seeing an increase in kit popultters, an increase in intake overall, a decrease in our transport to our adoption partners because they're also full. So the pipeline is stuck. And when you have pets sitting in a shelter for longer, you know, we're averaging a length of stay of thirty five days per animal, and the national average was at twenty. There's no doubt that the shelters are full and we're
feeling it. Okay, I want to back up for a second because I'm just hearing about this for the first time. When actually, when I read the article about about what you guys are dealing with during the pandemic, spaying and neutering was considered non essential. And that's like one of the first things that happened before you adopt is you get the spade and neutered pets. So
the explosion stops. But that stopped during the pandemic, correct, So there were shelters that were still doing minimal amounts, but you were supposed to divert your veterinary supplies towards human medicine, which is understandable. But the problem is is that now we have this backlog and so people were shelters were adopting out animals during the pandemic on waivers, which is still what some of them are doing because either they don't have a veterinary team or they don't have the capacity
and they have a backlog. So it's just created this dynamic where we're seeing more animals and maybe we aren't at pre pandemic levels, but the quantity of the animals coming in in a very short amount of time is putting a lot of strain on shelter systems. Okay, and then I'm going to go down that road that nobody wants to go down. When the shelters are full and
over full, you guys are forced into making some really crappy decisions. So yeah, and you know there are some shelters that have to make decisions based on space. What we do is that we make decisions based on public safety and behavior issues or illness. So but if we have capacity issues, then a dog or a cat that maybe we have given time to so much time and now we have to say, okay, that particular pet is in decline
in the kennel. We're not seeing positive outcomes through the foster system or through behavior enrichment, and now, yeah, you have to make a difficult decision because now you have to worry about spread of disease. And so it's a multifaceted issue that we're dealing with. And so nobody wants to go to work every day and have to decide on dogs and cats to euthanize. That's not something that we get into this profession to do. But it's a side effect
of overpopulation. And so you know, we're so focused and I know the article focused a lot on the euthanasia issue, but that's not helping the shelters because the public trust is saying, well, don't take your animal to the shelter because they're just going to kill it, and that's a horrible position to put the shelters in. The reality is that we're doing so much more for
each and every animal that comes into our care. And if all of us were just uthanizing for space, I wouldn't have just adopted out a dog that had been in our care for over two hundred days. That's not happening. We're spending a lot of time we're not euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals, but we are having to make difficult decisions on dogs that maybe we would have wanted to try to give even more time, but we just can't do it if we're not seeing that improvement. Yep, Okay, well, I think you
guys are all heroes. So, like I said, I just brought it up because it's that really awful reality that you are forced into. Like you said, you just you don't have the capacity for this. But how can how can we make things better? Well, I think we need to focus on what's the issue in a community, and let's be neighborly and let's try to help the people that we see that are struggling. You know, the
cost of food, pet food is an issue. When we adopt out animals at our shelter, they're fixed, they have everything, they have post care for veterinary care. We also send them home with their starter food, so there's things that we can do. We have a pet pantry at our shelter. You know, you leave what you can, you take what you need. We don't ask, we don't monitor it. So I think if we
look at the fact that shelters are supposed to be a resource center. We want to help our community members, but we didn't create the population explosion. It's happening in our communities and it's just ending up that the shelters are taking the heat for it. The reality is that you know, if you can adopt, if you can foster, if you can volunteer, if you can donate, all of those things are so important. Okay, So and it's
not just adoption, So that's good to know too. If you if you can take one temporarily in foster them, or make a donation, or like you said, just volunteer and come down and take dogs for walks during the day. Absolutely, we run vacations if you want to take a dog out for the day and hang out with it at you know, your your local park, or take it to Low's or home depot. We have people do that all the time. It's great, great for the dog, great for
you, a doggie dacation. That's so adoring. Okay, but let's let's let us not be remiss talking about adopting. And I know that the holidays are sometimes a good time something to think about. So if you're what do you say if you're in the market possibly thinking about adopting. What's your message to people? So I would say do your research, and you know, don't just say hey, i'd like that cute puppy in the window, because that cute puppy grows up to be you know, one hundred pounds German shepherd.
And so find a dog or a cat that works for your lifestyle. And you know, we're running free adoptions right now. We have our Mark after Dark with our Happy the Hour on Wednesday, December thirteenth from six to eight pm. I love that the adoptions are free. We're running a veterans event to focus on resources and adoptions on Saturday, December sixteenth for our veterans,
and so we're doing a lot of free adoptions.
