You're listening to KFI AM six forty wake Up Call with me Amy King on demand on the iHeartRadio app KFI and KOST HD two Los Angeles, Orange County. It's time for your morning wake up call. Here's Amy King. It's five o'clock. This is your wake up call for Monday, June third. We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Amy King. Hope you had a great weekend. Mine was super busy. You know. Sometimes I just shared with you that I just literally sit on the couch all weekend and do
nothing, just to sort of relax and recoup and regroup. This weekend was not that I had a friend and so it was a super busy weekend. I went to a show at the Pantagious Theater. The Pantagious is a lovely theater. The show we saw was not, unfortunately, but that's okay. It was still a really fun night. And then we did the La Winefest. We told you about that on Friday. We did that in Long Beach yesterday. That was super cool. If you haven't been, it's over for
this year, but next year highly recommended. It was a lot of fun. And then of course no weekends complete unless I go to Disneyland, because they've got Picksarfest going on, and as we were telling you, like, there's too much to taste and do and all of that in one trip. So we went and I got rear ended on the way into the parking structure. That was a kind of a fun way to start the day. My next a little sore, My back bumper is trash, but otherwise we're okay.
And after we got out of the cars, you know, it's always so uncomfortable when you get in a crash. So I was like immediately, I was like, okay, everybody's okay, right, and just take a deep breath because you don't know how people are going to react and if they're going to be really grumpy. I was like, it's it's just a car. It's just a little, you know, fender bender. And the girl was very sweet and she's like, I've never hid anybody before. It's like,
oh good, I'm here first. So and then we exchanged all our information and we said, but we're not gonna let it wreck our Disney day. And we didn't. We had a great time. I'm hoping they did too. But anyway, busy weekend. Busy week Let's get right to it. Here's what's ahead on wake up call. So Cal got a little jolt. That was another thing that happened over the weekend. A three point four earthquake rumbled under Pasadena just before ten this morning. We felt it at my
house. The quake was felt around Los Angeles, Anaheim, and as far away as San Bernardino and San Diego. History has been made in Mexico with the election of the country's first ever female president. Claudia Scheinbaum is the former mayor of Mexico City. She'll succeed President Andre Manuel Lopez Obrador. She's pledged to govern govern with the same principles as Lopez Obrador. Hunter Biden's trial on charges he illegally got a gun gets under way with jury selection in Delaware.
Get up to twenty years in prison theoretically if convicted. We're gonna be talking with ABC's Stephen Portnoy about this in just a couple of minutes, so stick around for that. Later this hour, we're going to be talking with a landscaping expert about a new trend in pools. I hadn't heard about this before. They're kind of bringing nature back into the backyard. I think you're gonna like it again. That's coming up later this hour at six oh five.
It's handle on the news right after wake up call. A shark attack has shut down a beach in southern California. Scary. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard that's been closed since early March because of a mudslide has reopened, about three months ahead of schedule. The road connection or to the San Fernando Valley and the coast in Malibu, was closed when heavy rains caused
rock into brief slides that block the mountain road. The road's going to have one way traffic control during non peak hours as crews continue their cleanup. A fifteen year old has been shot in a car near Echo Park. The LAPD says the girl was a passer in the car on Sunset Boulevard Saturday night and was shot when gunfire broke out. The girl's been taken to the hospital. Police have not released a description of the shooter or the shooter's vehicles. There's
Yakit de Desimas Bessy then d us Yes. Saudia Shinbaum has won Mexico's presidential election. ABC's Matt Rivers and Mexico City says she's the country's first female president. The two leading candidates in this race were both women, and that's massive in a country where historically it has been dominated by a patriarchal society, not only in just civil society, but also in politics itself. We're going to be talking with ABC Stephen Portnoy a little bit about that, and of course
we're going to be talking to him about the Hunter Biden trial. In just a moment, Boeing's Starliner spacecraft is set to try again to get new tests on two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. A launch attempt on Saturday was scrubbed just minutes before it was supposed to lift off because of a computer and power problem stop at T minus three minutes fifty seconds. ABC's Andrew Dimberd says. The next attempt is set for Wednesday morning at Cape Canaveral Space Station
in Florida. It can't come soon enough for Americans on the International Space Station because, along with two astronauts, the star Liner will now carry some crucial cargo a toilet pump essential to keeping the water clean. A NASA developer says it costs about five thousand dollars to take a leader of water up to space. The Starliner is set to take about twenty four hours to reach the space station. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's Stephen Portnoy. Stephen,
last week it was Trump's trial. Now it's a Biden trial. Yes, and that is a coincidence. We should not view it as an any way, it's a seesaw or any way related. Really, even though it happens at there's a juxtaposition here. Look, you have the Hunter Biden trial proceeding in Wilmington, Delaware. It involves the purchase of a handgun at a time when Hunter Biden was an admitted drug user. And when you go to a gun store and you want to buy a handgun, there's a background check.
But before the background check is conducted, you fill out the form and it asks on the form whether you are a user of or addicted to any illicit drug. And Hunter Biden ticked no on the form. When we now know he wrote about it in his book, and there are pictures which will likely to be seen in open court that he was addicted to crack cocaine at the time, and so years later, and this is now almost eight years
later. No, six years later, six years later, you have eighteen that's right, you have the case being brought by the special counsel David Wise. Now Hunter Biden's attorneys say that these charges are almost never brought absent a connection to some more serious offense related to a crime of violence or a drug
deal. Let's say, there's nothing like that here. And they say that if the president's sons last name weren't Biden, he wouldn't be charged, certainly not by a special prosecutor, and that this case, in addition to the tax case in Los Angeles, is a function of a prosecutor who was bent on adhering to and yielding to the pressures from the right to bring a charge. The other side of it, of course, is that you know, no one is above the law, that these were offenses and they should be
prosecuted to the fullest extent. This all happened because a plea agreement came unwound last summer. Remember we talked a lot about that last year. And now the question is all right, will the jury find hunter Biden guilty? Because Hunter Biden backed out of the plea agreement and said we're going to trial. Prosecutor said, fine, We're going to trial. So a couple of questions, and I don't even know if you can answer them, but I'll ask
you anyway, why for this one? Why wait six years to bring this charge? Well, I don't know the answer to that except to say that it was brought prior to this year. So I don't know what exactly the statute limitations is. But remember that this was the subject of a plea agreement that was, you know, coming undone last year. So I don't know exactly what they call the tolling of the statute limitations is. So I don't know the answer to that, and only the Special Council can explain it.
But I do know that it is pending and it does carry it's a serious charge. I mean, if you look at the idea of lying on a federal form when it comes to buying a firearm. Because of the tough on crime approach that the Congress has taken that Joe Biden helped lead when he was in the Congress, the maximum penalty here is twenty five years in prison. I mean, when you look at it and look at everything that's going on,
I mean, this is just me speaking. It seems like, you know, he's maybe do some punishment, But twenty years in prison for falsifying a form to get a gun, it just seems like seems too much to me. But that's okay. Is there any option to plea again, or because he rejected or that plead the deal fell apart, could they come up with a new deal. Well, I mean, look, at this point, there's no indication that Hunter Biden was willing to do anything other than defend
himself. If he wanted to plead guilty, he could have done so. I think that what would be interesting to watch is the argument that the defense attorneys are going to try to make. And it's I'm unfortunate. I think we're out of time here, but we know we can get into it later this week. This idea that perhaps the form was altered. Let that be your cliffhanger. Okay, all right, Steven Porton, I thank you for
the information. You bet all right, We'll talk to you soon. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Fire crews in Riverside County are beginning their annual controlled burns to remove excess vegetation and restore native habitats over several hundred acres around Lake Matthews and Lake Skinner. She'll say rising smoke will be visible today from the ninety one, the fifteen, the two fifteen, Highways seventy four and seventy nine, and
other locations. The operations are scheduled to continue until June fourteenth. Evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings in northern California, where a wildfires burned up to fourteen thousand acres about sixty miles east of San Francisco. CalFire Battalion Chief Josh Sylvieia says the wind has been a challenge well, hoping to keep fire moving away from the populated areas and into the more rural foothills. The fire started
on Saturday afternoon in San Joaquin County. It's about fifty percent surrounded. Hundreds of firefighters have been working to stop it. Two firefighters have been hurt. A judge in San Jose says no to overturning the sentence of Polyclous's killer, Twelve year old Polly, was kidnapped from her bedroom and killed in nineteen ninety three. Mark Klass says the judge's ruling is a relief. Hopefully we'll never
hear from Richard Allen Davis again. They did exactly the right thing. Richard Allen Davis was trying to use California's re sentencing reform law from twenty twenty one to have the judge throw out his death sentence and trigger a new hearing, but the judge said the new law does not apply to death penalty cases. Palestinian health officials say Israeli strikes overnight have killed eleven people in central Gaza.
Officials say those killed include a woman and three children. The Israeli military says the remains of a person believed to have been taken hostage by Hamas have been found in a community near the Gaza border. Israel says the thirty five year old man was killed in the initial attack on October seventh. The discovery comes as Israeli forces are expanding their offensive in the city of Rafa in southern Gaza. Former President Trump has joined TikTok. His first video posted Saturday night shows
Trump greeting fans at the UFC match in New Jersey. He's already got about three point four million follows. President Biden has been on TikTok since February. He's got about four hundred thousand and President Both have said that they had at one point banned TikTok or wanted to ban TikTok, but now both have joined
the social media platform that is currently owned by China. When we come back, ABC's Aaron Travers will have the latest on a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hamas what it is, what are its chances of being approved by both Israel and Hamas. The Manhattan Beach Pier has been shut down because of a bee swarm. The bees took over late Saturday afternoon. Be experts have been called in to take a look and figure out what to do next. For now,
authorities are just waiting for the bees to leave on their own. A judge is expected to hear the defense's bid for a new trial for Rebecca Grossman, the socialite convicted of second degree murder for a hit and run crash that killed two young brothers as they crossed a street in Westlake Village. Grossman faces up to thirty four years to life in state prison if the motion for a new trial is denied. China has landed a lunar probe on the Moon.
The probe touchdown on the dark side of the Moon yesterday morning. It'll start collecting samples from the surface, and if all goes according to plan, it'll bring those samples back to Earth in the next few months. China apparently plans to send astronauts to the Moon by twenty thirty to start building a research base at its South Pole. At six oh five, it's handled on the news. A woman has made history in Mexico. The country is elected its first
woman president. Let's say good morning now to ABC's Karen Travers. Karen, there's a new ceasefire offer on the table for the Israel Hamas war. Any hope this one's gonna take hold? The wine House is expressing optimism about that. You know. They said that Hamas officials had come out and welcomed the
proposal, but still waiting for the official response. They also had emphasized over the weekend that this was an Israeli proposal, one that had been arrived at after intense diplomacy between the administration, other countries that have been working on this, and Israel's national security team, and the White House was very quick to say that, you know, they worked on this with the Israelis at multiple levels before President Biden gave his speech on Friday, engaging with the Prime Minister's
office and the Israeli War Cabinet, and that this was something the Israelis had agreed to, and they were doing that because there were some public indications and through reports that the Israelis didn't like what the President had outlined on Friday. But the White House is going to great lanes to say this is an Israeli proposal that they had signed off on, and that this is the best way
to end the violence right now. So that's interesting that you mentioned that, because some of the stuff that I'm reading this morning is Israel saying no, we didn't this wasn't our plan, This was the US's plan, and Israel just made some changes to it. Yeah, I mean President Biden said several times on Friday in his remarks, this Israeli proposal, this was an Israeli
proposal. Well, we heard this again from National Security spokesman John Kirby on Sunday that it was an Israeli proposal and that was what we That is their position on this, that this was not something that the United States drew up and is now forcing both sides to agree to. This was something that they, the Israelis presented to Hamas and now it's the waiting game to see where
it goes from here. One key issue though, is you know, the sticking point of when hostilities would end and what Israel would like to see with Hamas's capabilities. Is it a fully dismantling eliminating the threat entirely, Because the President on Friday spoke about Hamas being significantly degraded. He said at this point, Hamas is no longer capable of carrying out in October seventh attack, and he said that was one of Israel's main objectives in this war, and he
called it a righteous one. And then the other thing that I'm seeing are you seeing too that Netnahus said, Hey, our original goals and directives of the same, nothing's changed, and that so talk of a permanent ceasefire is really a non starter. Which, yes, we had heard from the President on Friday that that was one of the phases of this agreement was a permanent
seasfire. Yeah, and it was in phase two. So Phase one would last for six weeks and include a full and complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the populated areas of Gaza, and the release of a number of hostages, you know, focusing on the vulnerable first women, children,
and people who are sick. Phase two then would include the release of all the remaining living hostages, and the goal is that there would be the negotiation for a temporary ceasefire to become a permanent ceasefire with Israel withdrawing all forces from Gaza. And this is important, the President said, as long as Hamas lives up to its commitments, that is where obviously things get tricky, and that would be something that wanted to be negotiated to get to phase two,
okay, And in it there's talk of releasing the live hostages. Karen, do you have any idea how many may still be alive. We hear it could be up to one hundred, but we haven't seen or heard from any of them except for like two or three. Right, No, and that's exactly right, and the White House just won't give any you know, they say that is not something that they can weigh in on. They just don't
have direct insight into that. Okay, Karen Travis, thanks so much for the information and the update, and we will continue to watch this one. Thanks. All right, let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. People leave all kinds of stuff behind when they stay at a vacation rental well Belice yesterday said a cleaning crew in Alhambra found two hundred and thirty five pounds of methamphetamine inside a rental home last
month. Two people seen on security video using a U haul to transport the drugs were arrested when they returned to the home. Local leaders are investigating the impact meth has had on La County. Methamphetamine was listed in the cause of death of more people in La County than any other drug in twenty nineteen and twenty twenty. In twenty twenty one, it was nearly a clips by fentanyl.
The La County Medical Examiner. Data is part of what prompted the Board of Supervisors to request an investigation into the impact of meth on the community. At tomorrow's meeting. The board will hear a motion to direct county departments and the corner to collaborate with community groups and then report back in three months on meth mortality and trends over the past five years. They'll also ask for recommendations
on what can be done about it. Michael Monks KFI News. A pair of minute Man three ICBMs will be test launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County. The first launch window opens just after midnight to night's days up until about six am. The second launch is scheduled for overnight tomorrow night. The Air Force Global Strike Command says the tests are to demonstrate the readiness of US nuclear forces. One person has been killed about two dozen others have
been heard in a shooting at a street party in Akron, Ohio. Police Chief Brian Hardings says they believe at least some shots last night were fired from a passing car. Do you believe that some individuals at the party may have returned fire based on physical evidence? Officials say they've recovered two handguns and shell
casings from several guns, including assault style weapons. A reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and successful prosecution of the shooters has topped twenty two thousand dollars. A rally has been held in West Palm Beach, Florida, in support of former President Trump. He was convicted in New York last week of thirty four felony counts over documents related to a hush money payment to porn
actress Stormy Daniels. Trump supporters in Florida yesterday repeated Trump's claims of a rigged trial. I think it was a kangaroo court. I think the justice system is corrupt. There's a lot of liberal judges, and I think they're going after Trump. Biden can't win without stopping him. Some Trump supporters drove around with American flags and honk horns as you could hear. Others lined the streets waving Trump posters and Trump twenty twenty four flags. So we know that ozempic
is all the rage. And I know somebody who's taking it. She looks amazing. And I know it's helped a lot of people, and it's become such a big business that food companies are even addressing what to do because when people apparently are on ozepic, they won their appetites go away, but they
also because of the drug, have certain nutritional needs. So Nestley, which makes like Stoffers and Journo, probably not on the diet for ozempic users, but they have come up with a new frozen food brand called Vital Pursuit. It's twelve different portion controlled meals that are high in fiber, which is intended to be a companion for the so called GLP one weight loss medications and consumers focused on weight management. So the obesity medication I said, this was big
business. It's soon going to be a one hundred billion dollar business. It's about nine percent of the US population or it's expecting nine percent of the US population to be on a weight loss drug by the year twenty thirty. And the drugs have changed the way people eat, both in sizing and in frequency. So Neslie says Vital Pursuit provides accessible, great tasting food options that supports
the need of consumers in this category. Suggested prices like four ninety nine or less sandwich, melts, pizzas, bowls, you know, healthy sounding food, but they have extra nutrients like potassium and calcium and iron that the prescription drug users might miss from eating less food. Overall, so expect that to be shown up in stores in the frozen food aisle in the not too distant future. Tomorrow, the Dodgers had to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates,
with the first pitch going out at three forty in the afternoon. You can listen to every play every Dodgers game on AM five to seventy LA Sports live from the Galpin Motors Broadcast booth. You can also stream all the games in HD on the iHeartRadio app keyword AM five to seventy LA Sports. Cruis are making progress in their fight against a fourteen thousand acre fire that's burning in San Joaquin Valley east of the Bay Area. As of late last night, the
wind driven fire that started on Saturday afternoon is fifty percent surrounded. All evacuation orders have been downgraded to evacuation warnings. History has been made in Mexico with the election of the country's first ever female president. Badia Shinbaum is the former mayor of Mexico City and will succeed President andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. She's pledged to govern with the same principles as Lopez Obrador, calling that a good thing
for all Mexicans. The La City Council's voted to amend and ordnance that bans the raising of almost any flag except the American flag on city property. Now LA will be able to and has raised the prime flag outside government buildings for the first time because it is Pride month. At six o five is handled on the news. North Korea says it's going to stop sending trash balloons to
South Korea, but not before sending hundreds more over the border. At the at five point fifty, we're going to be talking to a woman who is helping bring nature into the backyard with pond pools, really interesting stuff. So you'll hope you'll stick around for that. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's Jim Ryan, and we've got a beef Jim Ryan. Yeah, a big beef out in the agriculture industry, and that's where this is playing
out and in legislatures you have regulators. So it's been a year, actually a year amy since the Food and Drug Administration give its approval to the sale and distribution of cultivated meat. This is meat that is grown in labs. Essentially, you take the cells of a living animal, you cultivatade them in a steel tank, using vitamins and protein and sugar and the stuff that makes
these cells divide, and you come up with a pile of meat. It's real, actual meat that came from the living animals cells, but without killing the living animal. Now, the theory is that you could take that cell and double and double and multiply double it and feed millions of people with those on the one set of without the massive ranches, without the corn that's required the feed, the methane that comes off of cattle ranches, for example.
And so I mean it economically, one day it might actually be a really practical and good thing. But for right now, you know, the cultivated meat or cultivated protein industry is facing from real headwinds. I would think so, because you just telling me about that is making me want to throw up. M That's the other thing. They need to find a new name for it. Lab grown meat doesn't really have a ring to it, and it's
something that makes people want to eat it. But I'm looking at a picture right now, I'm just going to ask you what is does it look like? It looks exactly like I'm looking at a Chicken fil A right now, and it looks like a chicken fil a because it is chicken meat. It's formed into a filet. It's cooked and cut up and looks exactly It looks pretty appetizing actually, and it's said to taste exactly like chicken because it is
chicken. Same holds true for beef and for fish and for the other things that can be formulated and created and made into something that can be consumed. But this stuff's only about ten years old, the technology is, and so some lawmakers are concerned about that. They want to see more testing done on it. They also have other concerns, you know, agricultural interests and lobbyists and people who don't want to lose their way of life or their living and
so there's a lot of opposition to this. Now, okay, and you mentioned that the chicken file a looks like a chicken fil a? Does it look like a real chicken file a or like a formed chicken file a? It has been formed, but it doesn't look like it. Oh what about a steak? Does it look like a steak? Or is it it? Does? It looks like a steak? So, you know, besides the technology that's gone into creating this thing that tastes is actually bee for chicken or
whatever. They've got into the artistry of what it should look like so that it looks appealing and appetizing and something that people want to eat. So then okay, so I'm going to go back to the steak too, because this is just creeping me out. So does it grow like a side of beef or does it grow individual steaks? No, well, it's individual cells.
So as these things multiply and the divide and they multiply the cells, they it becomes a larger and larger mass of material, right, and then it is formed by a machine or by by hand, by something to be a steak in other words, And so it's formed into this thing from this mass of cells. So it's not as though you're growing a steak that looks like a steak, or you know, put cells together and it comes out looking
like a chicken drum steak or something. You've got to form it into what is okay, and whatever they're growing, it's not ever alive, correct, Well, the initial cells were from a live animal. They don't have to kill the animal either. It can be taken from an animal that's still alive, right, Okay, that's the other part of it. You know, animal rights activists think this is a great thing because you're not slating slaughtering billions,
literally billions of animals every year to create something to feed people. And speaking of that, you know in parts of the world where they don't have cattle everywhere, in cattle ranches and chicken farms, you know all this. You know, food is scarce and this may be one way to sort of backstop that in a way. And where is this all being made? In California? Oh goodie. There are two companies, Good Meat and Upside Foods, both of them California startups, and they've been given the green light by
the Food and Drug Administration to go ahead. But in terms of the economics of it, the stuff costs. The initial hamburger that was made from cultivated meat costs something like thirty thousand dollars or something right now. The by producing in mass they've got the price down to something like forty pounds of forty dollars per pound. But you won't find it in any US stores, any restaurants.
There was a restaurant in Singapore that was selling it for a while, but that was just about it it's so expensive to produce at this point, Okay, and so, but they're still making it because they've been given So what are they doing with it all? If it's not being sold? Are they just thrown it away? Probably? I mean they're using it to experiment
and to figure out new ways of doing this thing. But until they're they're actually producing it a huge scale, then unfortunately for them, it probably isn't gonna work. But it's got to. Is there twenty five thousand gallon tank that they produced this stuff in, but they'd need something like a tank that's ten times that size to produce the meat in quantities that would be economically feasible. It just sounds so weird, but it is weird. Maybe it's maybe
it's the future. And when when it does land on store shelves, are they just going to put it out there or are they going to have to like, will there have to be labeling on That's a good point. Some states, there are seven states right now they're looking at some kind of regulation of that, some of them flat out banning it altogether, the sale and production of this stuff with criminal sanctions. Iowa, the governor they're assigned to
build prohibiting schools from buying lab grown meat. And yes, some states are saying, look, if you're going to sell it here, it's got to be clearly labeled as cultivated meat or lab grown chicken or beef for fish. Okay, so nothing on the store shelves now, But watch those labels people. I suspect you wouldn't try it at this point. I am not in the I'm in the no category lab grown. Yeah. Okay, Jim Ryan, thank you so much. See all right, let's get back to some
of the stories coming out of the CAMFI twenty four hour newsroom. A man who fell about thirty feet down a cliff near the Point Firmin Lighthouse lighthouse in San Peter has been rescued. He had to be hoisted up last night by a paramedic who was lowered from an LA Fire helicopter. Firefighters say it's not clear how the guy fell, but say he apparently hurt his back when he did. A rolling strike by unionized academic workers that various UC campuses is expected
to spread to three more schools this week, including U SEE Irvine. The workers are upset about the university system's response to pro Palestinian protests. They want all criminal and conduct charges dropped against anyone who was protesting. They also want students to have guarantees of freedom of speech and p political expression on campus, and for researchers to be able to opt out of funding sources tied to the
Israeli Defense Forces. Scientists that u se Irvine have discovered a person's body clock can be used to fight cancer. The study builds off research that shows maintaining a consistent circadium rhythm you know, eating, going to bed, and waking around the same times can help prevent cancer and other diseases. Uc Irvine scientists say the new results showed delivering cancer immunotherapy at the time of day when that clock is most vulnerable, can harness the power of the body's natural rhythm to
fight cancer. Researchers say the study, released last week, offers new avenues for cancer prevention and treatment. In Orange County, Corbin Carson KFI News of Interesting Stuff. Beaches in del Mar been closed after a man was attacked by a shark. The National Weather Services issued a three day warning for the entire Central Valley, which could hit temperatures of one hundred eight degrees. Heat advisories will also be up for parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, where forecasters predict it'll be near one hundred. China has landed a lunar
probe on the Moon. The probe touched down on the dark side of the Moon yesterday morning. It'll begin collecting samples from the surface, and if all goes according to plan, we'll bring those samples back to Earth in the next few months. We're just minutes away from Handle. On the news this morning, that and Yahoo says Biden's plan for a ceasefire in Gaza isn't a good deal. We'll be talking about whether Israel's gonna take it if Hamas takes it
too. But right now, let's say good morning to the owner of Serita Landscapes, Sarah Bendrick. Good morning, Sarah, Hi to morning, and thank you for having me. Sure. So, Sarah, I saw this little new trend in swimming pools and thought, well, that sounds kind of interesting. It's kind of taking us back to nature in the backyard with ponds. Yeah, pond pools are a new thing right now. I mean they have been around for a while, but they're definitely catching on and we're seeing
a lot more clients request them, which is super exciting. I think it's a great way to get a water feature in your backyard that's swimmable and you don't need the chemicals that wood for a normal pool, and you also just bring in that natural element into that outdoor space that completely changes the feel and kind of brings that more natural by the house, which is great for kids. Okay, so tell us what does a pond pool look like and then
we'll talk about kind of how it works and is more environmentally friendly. But does it look like a regular pool or does it look like a pond or is it a combination of both. So it can be a combination of both, but it more looks like a pond. It's basically a giant, swimmable pond. So they're fishing it, there's plants in it. It's usually lined with rocks. However, there are ways to make it look a little more modern or a little bit more like a traditional pool if that is what you
desire, especially if you have limited space. Using rectangular spaces or rectangular angles can be a little helpful with that as well. Okay, and is the bottom like is the you know, the base of the pool is it? Is it concrete or is it dirt? So there's a few different ways to build them. I'm most familiar with the aquascapes version, and they basically rock
in everything. And so there's a pond liner that goes down it's dug out and there's a pond liner, and then there's a lot of large boulders that go in to create the bottom and create the side, to create nooks and cranny so that the fish have places to hide if they need to from predators or if they just want to get away from for some peace and quiet. So it is a rock bottom, and then you fill it in with a little bit of gravel, so it very much feels like you're swimming in a
natural swimming hole. Okay, So now this sounds so cool, and the pictures I've seen of it, I was like, this just makes such great sense, you know, But I could see where some people might shy away from it because they're like, Hey, if I've got a pool, I can just dump in the chemicals once a week and I'm good to go.
But how does this one work? Yeah, so it's probably not for everybody, but it's definitely for people who are looking for more natural ways to swim without all the chlorine, or for people who are can bring nature into their yard or have maybe a closer relationship to their backyard. It brings in Like we have a non swimmabole pond at my parents' house and my dog drinks out of it all day long. It's healthy, clean water for him. But and sorry, I think I ran away from your question. What was that
exactly? It was basically how does it work? Like? How does how do you keep it clean so it doesn't get three inches of ponds come on the top of it, and you know, how do you keep it so it's nice and clean and swimmable and still usable. Yeah. So it does use two ways of filtration, and there's some other things you can add to it, but basically, it has a skimmer like a pond or like a pool wood which takes any debris from the top that would whether it's fallen pollen
or leaves or any debris like that, it'll clear that out. Collected in a basin, you just have to empty that out. So that's very much like a pool. But then the bigger system is the natural filtration. And so all these ponds have a build up to like a little bit of a waterfall that keeps the water moving and it pumps the water into a wetland,
and the wetland is full of different sized gravel. There's also some different size or different they call them bioballs, which are basically a little if they could be plastic, or they could be clay, they could be a few different things, and that helps grow beneficial bacteria. So you have beneficial bacteria that's helping keep the pond clean. You have the natural filtration through the rocks,
and then you also have the plant material, so the fish. You need to have the fish, the plants, and the natural filtration to have the right balance. If you get too much sun, you definitely want to add a little bit of shade. That does help. If you do have some alergaye stuff, but my parents palm. We hardly feed the fish because when we don't feed the fish, they clean up any of the little allergae that might be hanging around. Okay, so you basically are creating a little mini
ecosystem exactly. That's right, sure, and it's really Yeah, it's really cool when you get the right balance of plants and the fish, because the fish fertilizes the plant and then the plants clean everything up and then it gets filtered through these different systems, and there's also UV light filters you can add to it as well if you need to. And when you put these pools and you've got fish in them, does it attract critters or is there or
do you just kind of deal with that as it comes. Yeah, there's definitely a different element to it. For sure. It can especially birds. Sometimes we'll see the fish from above and so there's different ways to tear that. But one the depth of these Oftentimes we're building them five six feet deep because they can be deeper depending, so they are quite deep and there's lots
of places for the fish to go and hide when they're built it. So we've partnered with Aqua Skates who's actually based in Los Angeles, Sorry, no Aqua Skates California Water Skates who are based in Los Angeles, and we've worked with them for all of the ponds we've installed, and they do a great job of creating usual looks and cranny to help the fish kind of hide out nice. Okay. And then Sarah like, as compared to a traditional pool,
is it more or less about the same? I would say it's it's about the same, potentially less usually per square foot, it's it costs less money. Access is always you know, something with a pool or a swim wool pump, and we get big machinery in there to dig these holes out and remove the soil that needs to come out, so it kind of it kind of depends that. I would say that between fifty thousand and two hundred thousand is a good range for these swimming book coy ponds. They're also called
recreation ponds, and that will kind of get you in the ballpark. Most of ours have fell in between the eighty to one hundred and twenty very great, okay. And then if people want more information from you, where would they find it? If they want to check me out? On Facebook, Instagram or YouTube. It Sarah Bendrick and not Sarah without an eight. And
of course my landscape company is to read a landscape's design. And I got to give a shout out to California Waterscapes as well, because they've been our partner in all these projects. It sounds so cool, and like I said, from the pictures, go google it if you're interested in seeing what these pond pools look like. I just think it's such a fun idea as we
get back to nature in the city, you know. Oh yeah, it offers such a cool opportunity, especially if you have kids, because the way you can interact with water when you have rocks and plants and fish and that's safety swim in is really cool. You can even put little beaches to roll up into it, so there's a lot of dynamics that can really help balance out your landscape and make it look completely different. Very cool. Sarah Bendrick, Thank you so much for your time this morning. Appreciate it, all
right, thank you so much for having me. All right, take care. I just think that sounds so cool, a pond pool. If I had a backyard, I'd look into it. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A judge in Van Ees is set to hear lawyers for Rebecca Grossman argue for a new trial. The Grossman Burne Foundation co founder was convicted of second degree murder in February for a crash in Westlake Village that killed two young brothers. Her lawyers want
a new trial on the murder charges. They claim there are at least five reasons Grossman is entitled to have the case heard by another jury. Grossman's supposed to be sentenced next week. She's looking it up to thirty four years to life in prison. Jury selection is starting in Delaware in the federal gun case against President Biden's son Hunter ABC's Stephen Portnoy says the president's son is accused of lying on federal gun purchase forms in twenty eighteen when he said he was not
a drug addict. President's son wrote in his book that he was a crack addict at that time, and prosecutors have sett in court papers that the evidence they intend to present from Hunter Biden's laptop will include pictures of him with a crack pipe in his hand. Hunter Biden is pleaded not guilty and claims he's being unfairly targeted by his father's justice department. The younger Biden is also facing a separate trial here in California in September on charges of failing to pay more
than a million dollars in taxes. Pliments will aligne so nice nice verse, Yes, they will align. Six planets are lining up in the night sky. The phenomenon is referred two as a parade of planets. It'll peak this morning, but can still be seen over several days. About an hour before sunrise. Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune appear near each other in the Solar System. Nasas's only Saturn and Mars will be
visible with the naked eye. Experts say the planets look close together because of their specific orbital speeds and paths around the Sun. This is KFI and KOSTHD two, Los Angeles, Orange County.
