You're listening to KFI AM six forty wake Up Call with me Amy King on demand on the iHeartRadio app KFI and KOST HD two Los Angeles, Orange County. It's time for your morning wake up call. Here's Amy King. Good morning. It's five o'clock, straight up. This is your wake up call for Wednesday, January third. I'm Amy King. Got some light rain falling. Wasn't too bad when I was coming in, but kno, it's coming

down harder now. As I watch dogs, Amy Kats and dogs, he just gave me the stink eye, so I guess it started raining a little harder. The rains expected to last through this morning, so take your time, take a little chill pill, maybe leave a little bit early because, as we know, every time it rains, the roads get slick, So we want you to be careful and get to where you're going safely. Today. Here's what's ahead on wake Up Call. Harvard University president Claudine Gay has

announced she is resigning just six months into her tenure. The resignation follows dozens of allegations of plagiarism and criticism over whether she believed calling for the genocide of Jews violates Harvard's Code of Conduct. Dozens of California Jewish houses of worship have received threats that bombs had been hidden at buildings, temples, and synagogues.

Ninety one messages were sent to houses of worship around the state yesterday. A new law in California has gone into a fact requiring organic waste to be recycled. Remember when this passed not too long ago. Well, that means that kitchen food scraps and your kids unwanted sandwiches need to go into the green bin with yard trimmings, not into the trash. It'll be up to the cities

to choose whether or not to find residents for non compliance. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Investigators say they're trying to track down those responsible for a fatal mass shooting near downtown LA. Officers with the LAPD say they were on an unrelated shooting call when all of a sudden, they heard gunfire down the street near Porter and

Olympic. The audios from surveillance video, which also shows the chaos during the shooting on New Year's Eve, cars got bullet holes in it there's blood spatter on my car, allegedly from the girl that died. That's Mike, an Uber driver who was waiting outside the party. Police say ten people were shot, two of whom a young man and woman, died on scene. Cops

say the party was an illegal gathering. Steve Gregory King of I News, Detectives in Orange County say a new trend involves crook's following business owners home, then burglarizing the house once the homeowners leave. Sant Ana police officer Natalie Garcia says a crew grabbed one hundred and thirty thousand dollars worth of stuff from a home just a few days before Christmas. This couple had ring camera and alarm

system, but these suspects of figuring loopholes into getting into their homes. Garcia says the burglars cut the power, he activated surveillance, and destroyed the footage by dunking the cameras in water. She says detectives tracked down a license plate number from one of the burglars cars, but the thieves wore masks. At least twenty people have reportedly been killed and forty others are injured in explosions at

a ceremony honoring an Iranian general who was killed. Iran's state run media says two explosions were heard near the burial site on what is the fourth anniversary of the general's death. A live broadcast showed thousands of mourners participating in the death anniversary. Israel is on high alert for an ES escalation with Hesbelah following a

massive explosion near Beirut that killed a top Hamas official. ABC's Marcus Moore says Selah al Arari was the second in command of Hamas and senior leader in the West Bank. Lebanon's state run news agency says Israel carried out the attack, which if confirmed, would mark a major escalation and would be Israel's first at tack on Beiroot since two thousand and six. Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu had threatened to kill Aurori as well before Hamas attacked Israel. In October, Starbucks is

letting customers byoc bring your own cups to reduce waste. Customers can tell the barista they've brought their own clean cup or mug, and it'll be collected at the pickup window using a contactless vessel so it stays hygenic. Starbucks says the cups must be cleaned beforehand, and cups larger than forty ounces won't be accepted forty ounces of coffee man. The chain's hot cups are made with plastic and

paper, which makes them difficult to recycle. Let's say good morning now to ABC News's law enforcement reporter Luke bar Happy New Year, Luke, Happy New Year. So we've seen pictures of thousands of people coming across the border and we just let them in. So how bad is the problem gotten? There were three hundred and two thousand encounters along the southwest border in December, marking

that the highest monthly total ever recorded. Sources have told us that the numbers are preliminary and could change, but the numbers, of course come as US Customs of Border Protection is reopening operations at four points of entry and border towns on Wednesday, the Biden administration told US Officials from the Bide administration told us last night there was a decrease in migrants over the past couple of days at ports of entry, But then, of course comes as in December, daily

border apprehensions top twelve thousand a day, which prompts CBP to close for ports of entry from Texas to Arizona. It sounds like the Biden administration is grasping for any kind of good news, Like you said, they said, oh, the last couple of days, border crossings are down. But three hundred two thousand in a single month, I mean that's the size of a good sized city. Yeah, there are a lot, There was a lot of just day after day. Twelve thousand was the high one day in December,

the eighteenth of December. But I mean other days after that, ten thousand migrants a day along the southwest border. Those are you know, record numbers, you know. But the Bide administration says that there are reasons for this sort of surge. They say that normally during the holidays, these sources I've spoken with say normally during the holidays to quiet time. This year it was busy because there were all kinds of misinformation given out by the cartels and by

the smuggling organizations. I've talked to law enforcement sources who've told me that misinformation about the CBP one app, which is the app that is used to you know, put migrants in an order, give them a time slot to appear at the border, to claim asylum. They smuggler said that was going to be shut down at the end of the year. That's not true. You know. Other misinformation, you know includes the border negotiations which shut down the

border after they come to a deal. Obviously that's not true. And then you know just the general preying upon vulnerable migrants, sources of said is working charging thousands of dollars to get into the border. Okay, and so you mentioned the smugglers and the charging thousands of dollars to come to the border, and they're not only coming in from Mexico and South America. Now we're getting moored that there are so called travel agencies cropping up in places as far away

as Senegal. Yeah, so those travel agencies are fake travel agencies. They are advertised at the US in Senegal, like you mentioned, that's just one of them. According to an official that we spoke to, these quote unquote travel agencies advertising Visa fe Visa free travel to Europe for the singing the leaves, which would then open up travelsphere if the offers were legitimate. Obviously they're

they're not. According to the CVP official that I spoke with. Uh, these quote unquote travel agencies sell the complete package which connect them to a smuggling organization. Then they facilitate the sort of northern migration to the border, and then they just drop them there at the border and and and they're there, but there there there are one hundreds of thousands of dollars operation. That's that's all about making money for these smuggling organizations. Yeah, it's big business.

And I know we got to let you go one real quick question. Uh, Texas is trying to slow the flow, but the federal government is suing Texas to stop them from stopping people from coming in. Yeah, so they the Justspartment said that they're going to UH sue if Texas doesn't basically enforce a bill UH that SB which allows for migrants to you know, for law enforcement, state and lookal law enforcement to apprehend a migrant if they are suspected of

being illegally in the country. Theo jasas Texas can enforce it, and if they do enforce it by today, they will assue to stop them from enforcing that law. Okay, ABC's Luke bar thank you so much. You can follow Luke at Luke L Bar. That's B A R R. Thanks for your time this morning, we'll be we'll be watching the border. Luke, thanks so much. Have a good day, all right you too. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour

newsroom. Experts gathered by the OC Healthcare Agency say the level of asbestos from a fire that destroyed a blimp Hager in testing was not so bad. There's no place on this earth that you can't find asbestos, and that you won't find it in the air. Druxel University professor Arthur Frank says his decades of research has only found disease from asbestos and people with continuous and heavy exposure.

I'm not going to say the risk over a lifetime is zero, but I'm going to say the risk is so low that it would be scientifically unmeasurable, and it's not something that folks ought to be concerned about. Other experts on the panel Thursday agreed crews are still cleaning up debrief from the fire that started in November in Orange County. Corbin Carson k if I news Please. They're looking for a mob of about one hundred people that caused thousands of dollars in

damage and losses to a bakery in Compton, LA County. Sheriff's Captain Melissa Ramirez says the thieves used a car to ram through the entrance of the bakery and still just about anything they could get their hands on. We have meat scales, meat itself like items from the from the business, as far as groceries and lotto scratchers. They also burn trash, mattresses and Christmas trees in the street early yesterday morning. No arrests have been made. The federal government's

gross national debt has passed thirty four trillion dollars. The Treasury Department reported the record high yesterday. The Congressional Budget Office had previously predicted in twenty twenty the gross federal debt would surpass that thirty four trillion dollar mark in twenty twenty nine. Republican lawmakers agreed with the White House last year to temporarily lift the debt

limit. That agreement lasts until twenty twenty five. A second and superseding indictment against Senator Bob Menendez claims he helped a businessman in New Jersey get a multimillion dollar investment from a company in Cutter For the last three years. According to the new indictment, Menendez has been taking things of value from the kataries in exchange for his support of certain Senate resolutions. Aaron Katterski says the deal,

closed last year, was worth tens of millions of dollars. The indictment yesterday says Melendez allegedly made a number of supportive statements of Katar from twenty twenty one to twenty twenty two. A man has been found dead in the engine of a plane at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Alex Stone says the guy, who who had a ticket to Denver, ran through an emergency exit at the airport on Monday night. There was a man hunt forum His clothing and

shoes were found on the tarmac. He was then found inside of an airplane's engine on the de icing pad. The engines were rotating, but police say it's not clear that they had been on. Stone says the guy was pulled out and given narcan, but he died at the scene. Toxicology reports have been requested to help determine his cause of death. The world's first fully AI powered restaurant has opened in Pasadena. Guests who eat at Cali Express by Flippy

can watch robots prepare burgers and fries from start to finish. The simple menu is similar to in and outs, where you can order burgers, cheeseburgers, and fries. The CEO says the location will also double as a pseudo museum presented by Miso Robotics. Reservations can be made online. Up to three quarters of an inch of light rain and three to six inches of snow expected across southern California this morning. A winter weather advisories up for the mountains of La

Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties through ten this morning. Snow could fall as low as four thousand feet that could effect travel through the Grapevine and to hone Pass. Forty to fifty mile per hour winds are also so expected through this afternoon. A federal appeals court has ruled at Texas can ban abortions even in medical emergencies. Republican Texas Attorney General to Ken Paxton had sued to overturn a ruling

from twenty twenty two that said abortions should be allowed in medical emergencies. The Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeals sided with him. Mayor Bass and city councilwoman Unices. Hernandez will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony today for a ninety five unit facility in Cypress Park that'll provide interim housing for the homeless. The project, called Northeast New Beginnings, broke ground in May of twenty twenty two. It's expected to open residents next week, well five years ahead of schedule. The

US national debt has hit a record thirty four trillion dollars. We'll be telling me about that right now. Let's say good moe, wording to the host of Rich on Tech right here on KFI KTLA's tech reporter Rich Demiro, Happy new year, Rich, Hey, good morning to Amy. Happy new year to you, new year, new way to invest maybe bitcoin? Tell us what's going on with that? Well, it's been kind of an up and

down this morning. It is down in kind of a big way. So bitcoin hit forty six thousand, which was like the highest since April twenty twenty two. Why because all these bitcoiners expect the SEC to approve a bitcoin ETF.

And what would that mean. It means a lot of regular people could put money into a bitcoin ETF, you know, in their four to one k's and just the regular investments but now this morning it's back down because one of these companies that follows this stuff says they expect the SEC to reject all the ETF applications. But who knows. Amy. It's up, it's down, it's around. It is certainly fun to watch. Do you have any bitcoin? I do have bitcoin from many, many years ago, and you

remember your password? Well, okay, it's funny you say that, because when I first signed up, I did forget my password. So I do have an account somewhere that I have no idea how to access. But I do have one account which I can access. So you could have like hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting there that you just have no access to. Ever again, no, because I didn't buy like more than like probably ten dollars.

Oh okay, I don't think it could be more than that. But no, the account I do have access to is in one of these apps that you know. It was during the time when everyone was buying, and you know, of course people got on board, and it's just kind of a fun thing. More of the technology of it and more of what is this thing all about? To understand it better, and you know it sometimes

it goes kind of up. Sometimes it goes down. We are definitely in a time when it is up more than has been in a long time. I did the same thing with Doji cooin. Remember when Elon Musk came out. How did that work out? I think it's back up to nine cents a share. Okay, I didn't buy very much. I also okay like you, But so one year of doge is up eighteen percent in the past year. One year of bitcoin is up one hundred and fifty two percent.

So you know, that's eighteen percent is still pretty good. Yeah, sounds like you made the better choice. Is it a good investment? Do you think bitcoin? Ooh? That? You know what? I can't give investment advice. I you know what, For me, it's just fun. It's just interesting. You know, you kind of have an understanding of how it works and how to buy it and how to protect it and all that stuff.

I think, you know, if it's play money, sure, but there are people out there that have put a lot of money into this. So I do think the technology behind it is very very interesting. But I think there's another side of it, and that is the governments, of course, don't really want this because it's not necessarily, you know, aligned with what they want, which is control. Yeah. Okay, so we got another new phone coming out Sam Yes, Samsung S twenty four. Now,

obviously this is all rumor and speculation, except for this part. We do know when the next Samsung event will happen. It is scheduled for January seventeenth of this year, so that's in a couple of weeks here, right after CES next week. It'll be held at the SAP Center in San Jose. That's where they're going to unveil it. I of course will be there. There is a big focus amy as you might expect. Take one, guess what do you think the buzzword is for this new phone? Besides camera?

I was gonna say camera, The new buzzword is CHATJPT ai exactly. Bingo, you got it. Ai. They call it Galaxy AI is coming, so we will see When the Pixel launched, that's Google's phone. Lust was it October of last year? It was all about AI and this phone is going to be all about AI. And so there you have it, S twenty four. It's coming out a little bit earlier than previous years. Damsung every single year kind of moves back their launch state, and I think it's

because they want to separate from the iPhone and the other phones. Now they've got the foldables that come out in the later portion of the year. So in the S twenty three Ultra, by the way, still doing well. It's still a good phone a year in, so they keep getting better. How are the foldabules doing. I was interested in those, but then I just kind of forgot about them. Small part of the overall market, maybe about two percent worldwide, even less a little bit. I think the latest

number was just under two percent, But they are the growing area. So there's two parts that are growing right now. Premium smartphones, which include the foldables and also foldables themselves. But the budget, regular everyday phones, you know, the standard iPhone, the standard Google whatever, those are just kind of flat and these manufacturers know that, and that's why they are pushing the super premium models because that's where the money is and that's where the growth is.

Okay, well, yeah, you mentioned the flat sales. Apples Aquan down like three percent yesterday because they're not doing great right now. Well, I think overall Apple is still doing really well. I think that when it comes to the eyes of investors. They want to see that new, big, best thing. And of course the iPhone just continues to evolve. It's a great device. But are people sitting there saying, oh, my gosh, this is the most amazing thing I ever purchased this year? No,

they say, Oh, it's time to upgrade. Let me go get a new iPhone. What do you guys have. It's not Oh, Apple has a new foldable let me go buy that. Ye that's And of course you have the new vision headset coming out, and that's too expensive for most people. So that's going to be fun, but it's not going to be the mover and shaker for the stock price. The Vision headset that's like a VR, Yes, VR headset I expected in the next couple of months, they

said early twenty twenty four. The rumors are saying February, which is next month. But you're talking thirty five hundred dollars minimum amy that doesn't include any accessories, that doesn't include tax, the Apple Care, all that good stuff. So that is for very, very a certain individual who has a lot of money to burn, fun to play with, not a necessity. No, But if you know, I have high hopes for I do think they will bring VR into a new realm, hopefully, because they are doing things

kind of cool and they've got the developer base which is amazing. Okay, so it is a new year, and I know I, for one, keep getting the little flashes saying, hey, your computer is about full. You only have about twelve gigs left or something like that. So for the new year, and maybe in an effort to declutter, how do you clean up your computer? Yes, I've got to se on my website. Rich on tech dot TV, this is my story today on KTLA. I love

starting the new year with a fresh computer. I did this myself over the break. Now I go pretty wild. I actually clean out, like I format the entire thing, like I erase everything and start fresh. You don't have to necessarily do that because it is a lot of work. But here's the four things I think you should do. Number one, get rid of old programs that you no longer need or use. Same goes for your web

browser. You downloaded all those little extensions over the past year. You know, the ones that check prices, the ones that help you search all this different stuff. Get rid of the ones you don't need. Do your software updates, those are very important to protect your computer security wise, but also it could smooth things out, make it run a little bit faster. Clear out your browser so your browser remembers a whole bunch of stuff. You should

clear that out so that it can run faster. And then of course empty the trash on your computer and give it a restart, and that should really go a long way for making your computer feel newer. Ooh, I think that I need to do that today. I think that that's a great idea to start the new year. So why not. I mean everyone's doing dry January, why not do clean up my computer January as well? Getting drunk anyway, so you might as well be productive and clean out your computer.

Yeah, and you're not going to spill beer on it. Look on the bright side. LA tech reporter Rich Damia thank you so much. Rich, of course, is the host of Rich on Tech right here on kfive Saturdays from eleven to to two. He's got so much great tech information for you. You can also follow Rich on Instagram at rich on tech is website, richontech dot tv. Thank you, Rich. We'll talk to you next week. All right, thanks Amy. All right, let's get back to some

of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. The State Department of Water Resources says the water outlook for the rest of this year remains uncertain. After it took the first snow survey of the year, we recorded a snow depth of seven and a half inches and a snowwater content of three inches that results in thirty percent of average to date. Snow Survey manager Sean DeGuzman says the start of this water year has been dry, despite the recent

December storms that gave a small boost to the snowpack. Last year, at this time, the snowpack was at one hundred and eighty five percent of normal. Harvard President Claudine Gay has become the second Ivy League president to resign in the past month. Her resignation yesterday comes amid plagiarism accusations and backlash over her testimony about anti Semitism on Harvard's campus. She only took over in the job in July. The Harvard Crimson says that it will be the shortest tenure of

any university president since the sixteen hundred. ABC's Mary Alice Parks sins Gay was the first black woman to serve as the president of Harvard. The Harvard Corporation says the resignation came with great sadness. California is now handing out stiffer punishments to retailers who sell flavored tobacco products. Stores now face up to six hundred dollars fines on their first strike in increasing finds if they continue breaking the rules.

The American Lung Associations Keisa Bruce says stiffer laws are essential to keeping miners from becoming addicted to tobacco. Targeting flavored tobacco is important because they are especially popular among youth. The same bill that stiff in the laws beginning this year also directed the California Department of Public Health to become the lead enforcement agency.

Blake Trolley Kafine News, an Iranian official says at least seventy three people have been killed one hundred and seventy wounded in an attack that targeted his ceremony for a slain general. Two explosions rocked the ceremony that marked the fourth anniversary of the general's death. A new law in California has gone into effect requiring organic

waste to be recycled. That means kitchen food scraps and your kid's unwanted sandwiches need to go into the green bin with yard trimmings, not into the regular trash. It'll be up to cities to choose whether or not to find residents for non compliance, and you may not need to make the switch to electric appliances. After all, Berkeley became the first city in the country to ban natural gas powered stoves. That was in twenty nineteen. Of course, they're

trying to fight climate change. Will an appeals court struck that down last April, and then yesterday refused to rehear the case. So the ruling's going to become final unless the Supreme Court agrees to review it. This could mean the overturning of laws in other cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. At six oh five, it's handle on the news. The US national debt has hit

a record thirty four trillion dollars, five years ahead of predictions. Hey, in just a few minutes, we're gonna check in with Ellen k because yesterday on Coast she got to talk to Jeremy Renner. Remember, Jeremy Runner was in that incredibly serious snowplow accident that happened a year ago, so she got to talk to Jeremy and see how he's doing. We'll share that information with you in just a few minutes. Amy's on it, Aami's on it,

Amy's on it, Gami's on it. What am I on? I'm on streaming shows, movies, TV series, documentaries, and of course I love a good Hunger Games movie. And now The Hunger Games Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds is streaming. The movie was released in theaters in November, but became available to stream right before Christmas on Prime Video. Yeah, I bought it twenty four to ninety nine, but now it's mine. So the movie is the backstory of Corlinis Snow, who is the president of Pan m and basically

the ultimate villain in the Hunger Games movies with Catnus Everdeen. Well, those movies happen for the seventy fourth and seventy fifth Hunger Games. This story, it's a prequel. It starts sixty four years earlier. It shows us the tenth Hunger Games. And in this movie, the games are still pretty new. They're ten years old, and they kind of haven't worked the kinks out

yet. They know that they're going to reap kids from twelve districts at districts and they all go into an arena and they fight to the death, and it's it's a way to punish the districts for their rebellion and their uprising. So the kids here now are mistreated, they're starved, they're kind of treated like animals, as opposed to in the Hunger Games movies if you've seen those, they really kind of treat them like rock stars before they send them into

the arena to kill each other. So cinematically it feels like the Hunger Games movie, so it's very familiar. Musically, the score has a familiar theme, so you feel right at home. Like there's songs from the Hunger Games movies that they make reference to. The theme is similar, and so again you kind of feel right at home in that the movie is dark, it's

gruesome, but what I do appreciate is that it's not gratuitously gory. So even though the whole goal of the Hunger Games is to kill all your opponents in the arena, it's not just blood and gore like a slasher movie would be. So the movie stars Peter Dinklic as Dean High bottom and also Viola Davis. She is the evil doctor gall She is maniacal, she is scheming, she is bad, and I love, love love her character. I mean, Viola Davis is a great actress, but she takes it to a

whole new level of crazy in this one. I mean you can just feel the evil like emanating from her pores. She's much more outwardly evil and devious, I think in the movie than in the book. But I think it works. And just like with most books and movies, I think that the book because I went and read the book before I bought the movie, I think the book is a lot better than the movie. And I think that's the case almost all the time. But if you like the Hunger Games,

I think you're gonna like this. Although I do agree with Jason Nathanson. We talked to Jason about this when it was released in movies, the movie goes too long and it feels like the final third part of the movie could

have been a whole different movie. So will there be another movie? No official word yet, but there certainly could be several more, because you know they're at Hunger Games ten and the one with Catnus Evererdeen is seventy four and seventy five, so there's a lot of story to tell between the tenth and the seventy fourth Hunger Games. Guess that's going to be up to the author,

Suzanne Collins. But overall, I think it's worth the watch. If you didn't see it in theaters, again, it's now available on streaming and if you like the Hunger Games, I think you're gonna like this one. And if you haven't seen the Hunger Games, it can still stand alone, but it definitely, in my opinion, helps because it makes references to things from the Hunger Games, so it starts to kind of put the picture and the pieces all fall together. So super super interesting. Let's get back to

some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. More than one hundred synagogues in California have been forced to close after getting email threats. The emails claimed explosives were on the property yesterday. Anti Defamation League LA's Jeffrey A. Abrahms taels NBC four there are consequences to people sending threats. Law enforcements diverted to these hoaxes. They're not doing their job. To help

protect the entire community. This has a consequence, so everyone needs to speak out and again to do so in unity. The Anti Defamation League says since October seventh, there's been a three hundred and thirty seven percent increase in anti Semitism compared to twenty twenty two. Police say they don't believe the threats are credible and no explosives have been found. Officials in the city of Industry have arrested two brothers they say violently stole a purse from a woman at a costco.

The Only County Sheriff's Department says the men were arrested last week for the attack that happened back in November. The woman was putting things into her car when an SUV pulled up. One attacker got out of the car and tried to grab her purse. She was punched several times and refused to let go of the purse. The other guy in the car drove off, dragging her about fifty feet in the process. Officials say she suffered life threatening injuries.

Disgraced former lawyer Tom Girardi has been found competent to stand trial by a federal judge in La Girardi is accused of stealing more than fifteen million dollars from his clients in a decade's long fraud scheme. In more recent years, he had a resurgence in popularity for his marriage to real housewife of Orange County Erica Jane. His lawyers wanted the eighty four year olds dementia diagnosis to prevent them from

going on trial. Alex Stone says details of the judges ruling yesterday are under seal. Lawyers for both sides will get the chance to identify information in it that they want to keep confidential, like health records and other sensitive materials.

Several new shows are debuting on Broadway this year, including the revivals of the rock musical Tommy and the Whiz, a new musical The Heart of Rock and Roll featuring the hits of Huey Lewis, and the news debuts That Could Be Fun, along with Hell's Kitchen, which is a coming of age story that features songs by Alicia Keys. There's also a new musical version of the popular

novel The Notebook, Yeah, Be Ready to Cry. And then there's also Suffs, which is a new musical about the nineteen thirteen women's Suffrage movement. It's produced by Malala USAFC and Hillary Clinton of all people. Up to three quarters of an inch of light rain and three to six inches of snow are expected across southern California this morning. A winter weather advisory is up for the

mountains of La Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties through ten am. Snow could fall as low as four thousand feet that could affect your travel through the Grapevine and to hone Pass. Forty to fifty mile per hour winds are also expected through this afternoon. A federal appeals court has ruled Texas can ban abortions even in

medical emergencies. Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued to overturn a ruling from twenty twenty two that said abortions should be allowed in medical emergencies, with the Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeals sided with him. Mayor Bass and city Councilwoman at Eunices Hernandez will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony today for a ninety five unit facility in Cypress Park that'll provide interim housing for the homeless. The project is

called Northeast New Beginnings. It broke ground in May of twenty twenty two, and is expected to open a residence next week. We're just minutes away from handle on the news this morning, Harvard's president is stepping down after intense pressure and backlash for charges of plagiarism and her response to calls for the genocide of Jews on the Harvard campus. So, as we mentioned just a little bit earlier, it's been a year now since Jeremy Renner was almost killed when he

was run over by his own snowplow at his home in Reno. As you recall, he saved his nephew from the being hit by the snowplow he was stuck there on New Year's Day twenty twenty three and then ended up being run over by his own snow cat, which weighs more than seven tons. So Jeremy Renner stopped in to talk with Ellen Kay on our sister station KOST to see how he's doing a year later. It's like checkpoints for me, It's

like State of the Union. I always have to kind of check in with myself, check in with you physical and mental emotional parts of life, and it's it's it makes it pretty exciting to be honest, it's part of the gifts that came from something quite tragic. There's one of thousands of amazing gifts that that I was able to receive. And you know, there's wonderful blessings. That's all I can say. There's just really that are like, here's here's one I can I've never afforded a bad day for the rest of my

life. It's impossible, right, And how about that thought? Right? So these ideas or thoughts keep coming to me, and I'm like, wow, what, Life's pretty dang good. Life's pretty dang good. And I keep finding these things, you know, like you know, some things I share with other people and most things I keep pretty private. And but there there are wonderful, wonderful gifts that came and I feel so so lucky and blessed for it, you know. Now, Jeremy has been busy over the

last year. Of course, he's been recovering from his injuries, but he's also been putting together a new album kind of reflects what happened to him. It's a musical diary entry, you know, journal entry and kind of healing cathartic for me. And then I'm sharing it because I think a lot of people were all on this journey with me in this in this recovery, which I found strange. You know, really, yeah, what way, because you know, I mean me waking up from me waking up from the accident,

I know what the big deal was. I mean, what were people freaking out about it? Like I'm gonna be out of here? And I think a selfie like when I was in the two days when I woke up, you were crushed, Yeah snowcare yeah yeah yeah, But I thought I was out in two days, right, So I get why people were pretty Also, I was on life support for a few days. I didn't realize. Yeah, I woke up and I was intibating, like I'm thinking I'm

totally fine, like my brain thought I was still fine. In reality, he was on life support and then had a month's long recovery to repair more than thirty broken bones and other really nasty injuries. He says that he's apologized to his family for what happened because it has forever changed them, and he says they can't unsee what they saw that day. But he also said he's not a victim. He doesn't want to use this accident as an excuse for

New Year's Day to not be a reason to celebrate. Now. Speaking of celebrations, Jeremy Renner also talked to Ellen about his upcoming birthday, which is this Sunday. Well, my last birthday. I got my face surgery done and my ankle so on my birthday, so and I kind of wanted it that. I was like, hey, there's no better birthday than like to get this sort of out. It'd be my last surgeries as well. Okay this year, I don't know. I think I just wanted to just to

celebrate. You know, the depths of love with every relationship in my life has shifted changed all for the better, and I just want to celebrate all those those deep relationships I have, you know, And that's it. Yeah, that's it. Yeah. I'm so happy that we can sit here and say to you, happy birthday. Yeah, yeah, happy need what a gift? Yeah for real? Yeah, it says wonderful blessing, and Jeremy Renner says he is ready to get back to work. I'm so excited about

this. He's going to return to the set of The Mayor of Kingstown next week, which is a really great show. We've talked about on Amy's on It, and now that there's going to be a new season, I bet we're going to be talking about it again. So glad to hear that Jeremy Renner is doing well. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. The US Border Patrol says in December a record number of illegal immigrants crossed into the US, and while a large

number crossed into California and Arizona, the majority entered Texas. Sources in the Border Patrol say three hundred two thousand illegal immigrants were processed last month across all sectors in the Southwest. In the first twenty eight days of December, agents processed one hundred and twenty seven thousand single adult migrants and nearly twelve thousand unaccompanied children. Another ninety six thousand were part of a family unit, with migrant

parents and children traveling together. The next highest monthly number was two hundred and seventy thousand in September. Steve Gregory king off I News huge waves in the Bay Area have caught the attention of people across the world. One guy says he flew in from Portugal to experience. The giant waves at Half Moon Bay such a big deal, and HBO documentary crew is recording the surfing, while San Mateo County officials urging people to stay away. Alex Stone says Maverick's Beach

is known around the globe for its massive waves. The National Weather Service warned the thirty three high foot waves last week. We're deadly and we're not expecting quite that large, but more big waves are expected as another storm moves through California. Time Passenger is flying United. We're hoping to have two New Year's Eve celebrations, but failed at time travel. The flight was scheduled to depart

Guam the morning of January first and land in Hawaii December thirty first. The airline even promoted the flight saying you only live once, but you can celebrate New Year's Eve twice. Well. Unfortunately, the flight was delayed and passengers arrived in Hawaii after midnight on January first. Next time, maybe they should

travel by DeLorean. Okay, up in the sky tonights lots and lots of celestial activity, so we know that we've got rain on the way this morning and some snow in the mountains, and that kind of stuff, but it is supposed to clear off, and if it does, that could mean some

really cool viewing for the quadranted meteor shower. The best viewing of this first North American meteor shower of twenty twenty four is tonight through dawn tomorrow, and astronomers are saying the peak viewing time is at four point fifty three as Thursday, So right before you turn on a wake up call tomorrow morning, step

outside and take a look up in the sky. They're expecting up to one hundred and twenty shooting stars per hour, and the Quadrantids apparently has the potential to be the strongest shower each year, but a lot of times it's not because of two things. One, the weather gets in the way a lot,

and also there's a short length for maximum activity for this one. It's just six hours, So if you're looking into the sky, look for bright fireballs, so not necessarily the long tails, but more of a bright fireball. They're larger explosions of light and color that can last a little bit longer than an average meteor. And it's one of four major showers each year. Again, the other ones are the Leonids, the Lyrids, and the ercids.

But this one again is going on now but peaks again tomorrow morning at four fifty three am our time. And as always, NASA says, if you really want to see it, you got to get away from city lights, but the sky should be clear, so fingers crossed.
