You're listening to KFI AM six forty wake Up Call with me Amy King on demand on the iHeartRadio app k f I at kost HD two, Los Angeles, Orange County. Amy Kay, good morning. This is your wake up call for Tuesday, June fourth. I'm Amy King. We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. So if you're listening on the app or you're listening at AMFI six forty, we are just so happy that you're here for us today.
We got so much to get to as usual. I know it sounds cliche when we say it's really busy, but it really is busy today, so let's get right to it. Here's what's ahead on wake Up Call. The LAPD has cleared out a pro Palaceinian protest encampment from the sidewalk outside City Hall. About twenty tenths went up late yesterday afternoon. The LAPD declared it
a non permitted demonstration last night and cleared the tents early this morning. Cal Trends is being blamed for the massive fire in November that shut down the ten Freeway in downtown LA and costs thirty three million dollars to fix. Remember that, it says, infrequent and haphazard inspections led to conditions that led to the fire. Our Steve gregor Is can tell us more about that in just a minute. A jury has been seated Testimonies expected to begin today in Hunter Biden's
federal gun case. The twelve jurors and four alternates were selected in a Delaware federal courtroom yesterday. The President's son is accused of illegally buying and possessing a gun while being addicted to drugs. In twenty eighteen, we're going to get the latest on a new ceasefire deal in Israel and the discovery of four more
dead hostages with ABC's Jordana Miller in just a couple of minutes. And Joel Larsgard is going to tell us about a potentially financially devastating trend for homeowners facing sky high homeowners insurance prices at six oh five right after wake up call its handle on the news. Apparently fire hydrants or a hot ticket item, about one hundred of them have been stolen around LA this year. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom.
LAPD has cleared out a camp of pro Palestinian protesters from outside City Hall. About twenty tents began going up yesterday afternoon at Maine and First Streets. Several had Palestinian flags and phrases like Free Palestine and Free Gaza. Police started monitoring the area and by about nine thirty told people to clear out. When they didn't, the department went on tactical alert. No arrests were reported overnight,
but the tent encampment has apparently been cleared. A rolling strikeover pro Palestinian protests has moved to more UC campuses. Members of the UAWR demanding all criminal and conduct charges be dropped against arrested students and staff. UCLA student Annie Valoria winn It says her university is now punishing some of those protesters by refusing them access
to campus housing. It basically serves, isn't avixtra notice. If you're not allowed to come to campus, you can't go to work and you can live here. The strike has spread this week. Do you see Santa Barbara and you see San Diego? With UCI workers expected to hit picket lines tomorrow. The union, made up of researchers and teachers AID says it will strike through
June thirtieth, unless the universities meet their demands. Chris Adler KFI News A bill has unanimously passed the California State Assembly that would ban smartphones for students in public schools. The bill claims there is growing evidence cell phones get in the way of education and can lead to cyber bullying, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and suicide. The bill now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
The bill would allow students to use their cell phones in an emergency house. Republicans have drilled doctor Anthony Faucher Fauci in the origins of COVID nineteen and the advice that led to lockdowns. Fauci was the top US infectious disease expert until he retired in twenty twenty two. ABC's Stephen Portnoy says. Fauci insisted yesterday that US funded research in Wuhan, China, could not have caused the pandemic. It is molecularly impossible, stale. Fauci said he can't rule out
the chance that COVID did leak from a lab. I have always kept an open mind to the different possibilities, Fauci said. Allegations that he tried to cover up COVID nineteen's origins are simply preposterous. He also played down criticism of his social distancing guidelines. Spotify is getting more spendy. Subscribers will pay a dollar more a month for the ad Premium plans or AD free premium plans starting this month. Other plans are going up to the Family plan has going up
three bucks a month. That's a twenty percent increase in two years. The increase comes as Spotify cuts costs through layoffs and reductions to its podcast business. Let's say good morning now to Geordana Miller with ABC. Jordana's back after some well earned time off and time to accept her Gracie's Award here in La So
proud of you about that, Jordana. Thanks so much, Amy. It was really fun to attend the ceremony and be part of the ABC team and so many other great journalists and women who are doing really important work, you know, across news and media and entertainment special well, and you are one of them, and we appreciate you for all of your efforts. And now you're back in Jerusalem, and a lot happened while you were gone, but let's get right back to it. A new ceasefire deal has been put forward,
Is there any new movement on it? We know that Hamas hasn't responded, or at least that's the last we were hearing, right well, Israel ben is waiting for Hamas's official response. They'd said that they viewed President Biden's remarks positively, but that doesn't necessarily mean they've reviewed and responded officially to the deal itself. I think the same issues that have torpedoed previous efforts to read to reach us these fire are still on the table and there are still gaps
on. For example, when would the end of the war be declared? Is it in phase one? Is it in phase two? Uh? The Israelis want the option to restart the war if talk stall or they feel Hamas is playing games. How would that work? What is the role of Hamas at the end of this war? Israel? The United States don't want must have any role in governing the Gaza Strip or obviously any military role. Hamas still wants to have a foot, you know, a hand in the game
after this war. That's a problem. And then, of course, the issue of the Israeli military withdrawal or redeployment. You know, are there still going to be troops that the along the perimeter of the Godza strip. Hamas wanted every troop out. These are the same issues that have again torpedoed previous efforts, and they seem to still be in this They still seem to be hovering above this deal. So I can't report any great optimism from Jerusalem about
this deal. Okay, and now we know that President Biden kind of surprisingly announced, hey, we've got a new deal and it was from Israel. But Israel's pushing back on that a little bit. And Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke publicly about the deal for the first time. What did he have to say specifically? That's right. President Biden emphasized in his remarks that he's looking to end the war. You know, it's time to end the war and get
a permanent ceasefire. That was one of his main points. And Ntania, who felt the need to, you know, publicly respond and say, you know, we're working to get our hostages out, and you know, we will only agree to the end of the war if Hamas has been quote unquote eliminated, if we get our hostages out. He felt the need to say publicly that Israel's not agreeing to end the war before its war aims are met, and so, you know, pushing back a little bit on the President's
main point in his remarks on Friday. Okay, And while all of this goes on, Israel says, it's discovered four more hostages are dead. What's that? What's going on with that? That's right? Right? They announced last night four hostages that the Israeli Army believes were being held together in the Communists, that large city in Gaza South. They believe these four were killed some months ago, and the Israeli Army left open the option that friendly fire,
part of Israel's offenses against Hamas, may have killed these hostages. They said that the circumstances of their death will raise many questions, and they're going to look into those questions and report back to the families. So the circumstances of their death, you know, remains unclear. They didn't squarely blame Hamas,
and Israel didn't also, but didn't squarely take responsibility either. Of course, this speaks to the danger of these hostages are in day after day after day, and this is part of the reason why the families of the hostages have been so vocal stepping up their protests and their criticism of the government, because they say it is a fallacy to claim that you can both pursue the end of Hamas and the release of the hostages, because the heavy assault on
Hamas actually in dangers the lives of the hostages, and that may have been the case with these four. It leaves another eighty or so hostages that Israel believes could be alive, forty more than forty than are now declared dead, among them several Americans, and unfortunately it's not even clear if the eighty you know that many hope are alive, are really alive. That's why I was going to ask you, because aside from a video of a couple of them,
there has been no contact. Red Cross hasn't been allowed in. Nobody's been able to check on them. So they really don't know. They really don't know how they're doing. You know. The only hints that Israel gets are from well, there's two sources, one from the DKSE that they take from the Gaza strips. From some of those interrogations, they learn about the
fate of the hostages. They get new intel and the other is from Hamas itself who out videos, right, and those are signs of life when they can try to figure out how, you know, authenticate the videos and figure out when they may have been filmed. So, you know, it's very
difficult to know. You know, these are eighty hostages that are likely spread out again into smaller groups across the gods Strip, and right now they're fighting really across the Godless Strip from the north to central, to the to the to Rafa. So it is a dangerous situation for those hostages. Yeah, okay, jor Dana Miller, thank you as always for the information and glad
to have you back and appreciate the information. We'll talk again soon, tox fin All right, let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A new report shows Caltrans was negligent in the oversight of rental properties under the ten Freeway in downtown LA. The report from the California Department of Transportations Inspector General also shows Caltrans ignored warning signs in the month leading up to that destructive fire last November, which not only shut
down the freeway for days, but caused thirty three million in damages. The sixty plus page report outlines a number of deficiencies within Caltrans, including shoddy record keeping and a failure to do required inspections on least properties, many of which contained hazardous materials. Investigators say the fire under the freeway was arson, though no one's been arrested. Caltrans says it's implemented new oversight measures. Steve Gregory
take a fine news. A ride share driver has shot a twenty year old man who was allegedly attacking a sixty year old woman who'd just gotten out of his car. THEOC Sheriff's Department says the driver saw the woman being assaulted, so he intervened Sunday night on Custer Way. He did stay at the scene and called deputies. The man shot is in the hospital. Well apparently, Cindy Laufer is about done having fine. She's announced her final tour, the

President Biden's expected to take executive action to limit asylum seekers when the number of migrant crossings surge. The restriction would kick in once daily border crossings hit twenty five hundred. We're going to be talking more about this with
ABC's Karen Travers coming up at the bottom of the hour. Hawaii's kill Away a volcano is a right upting. The volcano has seen increased seismic activity for the past month. Officials say islanders can expect to see volcanic gas that looks kind of like fog it's called vog, and may experience earthquakes that can create cracks in the ground and rock falls. It's the first time the volcano is erupted since nineteen seventy four. The San Diego Zoo is working on its permit
to host giant pandas that will be on loan from China. The application for the permit includes a million dollars in operating costs and a habitat twice the size as the last one. It also requires any cubs born while the pandas are here to be sent back to China when they're two to four years old. If everything gets approved, the pandas could be headed to the San Diego Zoo as soon as this month. At six oh five, it's handled on the
news. A jury's been seated. Now it's time for testimony in Hunter Biden's federal firearms trial. Right now, let's say good morning to the house, the houst the House, the houst of how to Money. How about the host of How to Money? Joel Larsgard. Joel, you can call me whatever you want. Amy. Oh, you're so sweet. Good, because
I'm really good at messing up people's days. Okay, So we were out at lunch on Saturday or Sunday, and we went to this nice restaurant and we got our bill and we gave our credit card and we came back and then the service said to us, oh, the twenty percent service charge is added to your bill right there, and we went okay, and so my friend went, well, that's the tip and didn't tip. I don't think that's what it was, but I'm not sure. It's so hard to know
in this environment. And so I think what people assume is what your friend assumed at this point, that a service charge equals a tip, because it's a service. It's a charge for the service exactly. And this is something we've had to deal with that's proliferated in a meaningful way since COVID right and
restaurants coming up with all sorts of ways. And in the beginning, we all kind of rallied together and we bought takeout because hey, there wasn't, you know, much else to buy, and we couldn't go to our favorite storts. Dude were to go, right, So it's like takeout, like we're and it felt like we were in it with our local restaurants, wanted
to help keep them afloat. And now it feels like these some of these sneaky fees, these pervasive fees, have abounded, They've come up with new names, and now there's like an antagonistic relationship that we have with restaurants that have these fees around. By the way, I'm curious, did did you see anything that told you that this fee existed before you, like, anywhere on the table or did anyone tell you about that before you ate? No,
and it wasn't on the bill. But when we when he brought back the receipt, you know, for for her to sign, that's when he said the service charge is on there. Wow. Okay, yeah, that feels really bold, And honestly it's I would be willing to talk to a manager about that, and I would ask, hey, what what is this fee for? Why is it so why is it so opake? Why aren't you telling you about this upfront? It's something I would be willing to push
back. Again. It's not because I'm I'm I don't love restaurants, or not because I'm not interested in hipping servers, but you want that to be above board, and you want to know what you're getting into, and you want to know whether you should be tipping. On top of that. It's also one of those things where people are increasingly revolting against restaurants who are doing that. I think they're saying, like, okay, cool, this is
the last time you're going to get me like that. I think for restaurants, raise the prices on the menu and make clear ahead of time to people, like at least the transparency to say, hey, listen, we're charging an extra five percent right now in our prices because this and this and this one. People understand the reality of inflation, and people also understand the especially
right now in California with what's going on with wages for service workers. I mean, the costs are going up, and I think people are willing to pay the increased costs as long as they don't feel blindsided by it. Yeah, And we kind of feel bad now because we started talking about it later and we're like, I think you stiffed him because I think that was a service charge tacked on even though it says service charge and the server provides service.
And there was only three of us too, like a lot of times, you know, on six parts party of sex, the more they automatically add the tip. So we weren't sure. But so I guess what we take from this is watch for it and then, like you said, you're free to question it. Yeah, ask the question, and I ultimately I think probably all of us feel this way is why can't we function more like Europe in this regard where servers just get paid a normal wage and we don't
have to have to think about the tipping thing. That's just a much more ideal way to do it. So and it's I kind of like rewarding people. I love like being super generous if we have a great server or we have incredible service. It's really fun to get to do that. But man, this all these extra like fees coming out of nowhere kind of makes it a lot less fun. Yeah. So, speaking of prices going through the roof, homeowners insurance prices are going up when you can even get them,
and that's kind of created this disturbing new trend. Well, it's a homeowner's insurance market in California has a mess. Is a complete mess. It's a complete mess, and it's super sad to watch. And surance has gotten significantly more expensive. We're talking about just twenty plus percent increases year over year and four and that's nationwide and in California it's worse than that for so many people. And not only are insurance rates climbing rapidly, but payouts on claims are
diminishing too, So the value proposition of homeowners insurance has declined. But it's also one of those things where, for the most part, most people have to have it, right, especially if you have a mortgage, you literally have to have it or your mortgage company is going to say no, no, we're going to buy that policy for you, and then we're going to
bill you for it, and then it's really really expensive insurance policy. It's going to cost you more than if you had shopped for that policy yourself. And so the Wall Street Journal just wrote an article about the increase in people who are choosing to go without insurance altogether. And you're saying, well, who is that and who can do that? Well, surprisingly, something like forty percent of homes in this country, our own, free and clear people
don't have a mortgage. You're like, who are these people? I don't know? These people who I know? But that's great, Yeah, credible, But it's also I'm shocked every time I hear that stat because how are these people like own their homes completely free and clear. But a lot of those folks are choosing to ditch homeowners insurance completely. In twenty nineteen, only five percent of Americans didn't have homeowners insurance, and now it's twelve percent of
Americans who don't have any homeowners insurance. And I get why if you have a paidoff home you might choose to forego it. You're also putting yourself at incredible risk, and so you have to make sure that you are either one, okay if the home does something happens to the home, like a severe destruction of the home, that you're like, hey, listen, I'm just not going to rebuild. It's worth the money, it's worth the savings.
Now I can barely afford to keep the insurance. And you just have to make sure that you've got your ducks in a row before you decide to forego homeowners insurance. And if you have a mortgage, that's not even really an option for you. Yeah, so plan, plan, plan, and evaluate, and yeah, because what if you cancel your insurance and like your mortgage company doesn't know about it, right, How's I mean? Yeah, that'd
be a huge problem. I have a friend who owned a home in Florida and there was a massive storm that came through and basically completely demolished his home, and he didn't have homeowder insurance. And I remember him telling you that, and I was like, oh my gosh, well, I'm so sorry. But he has been a diligent saver and he owned the home free and clear, and so he has rebuilt it on his own time. There aren't
many people who can do that. So the other thing to do, by the way, as home insurance prices are going up, raise your deductible For normal people out there who still have a mortgage on their home. I love the idea of having more money in savings and then raising your deductible, which is going to lower that premium ount. It's going to reduce the shock of
the outgoing homeowners insurance premium every single year. You again have to make sure you have the savings to back it up, because I found this out the hard way last year when a tree fell through my home and I had a really high deductible, but guess what, I had the cash on hand to cover it. That's one way to kind of mitigate and minimize the impact of
rising homeowners insurance rates. It's not a fail safe, but and you have to make sure you have the cash on hand to pay the deductible if something happens. But that can be a way to save a significant amount of money every year on that insurance. Okay. For more great money advice, you can listen to how to Money with Joel Larsguard right here on CAFI on Sundays from noon to two. And next time we talk, because we didn't we ran out of time. But I want to talk about inflation and how we're
kind of getting it wrong. But that's going to have to wait for another day. Okay, sounds good, next week, all right, Joel Larsguard, thank you so much for the information. Again, how to Money with Joel Larsguard Sunday's noon to two. You can also follow him. I'm at how to Money Joel. Have a great week. Thanks Amy, you too. All Right, let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. The first excessive heat warning of the season's
been issued for the valleys and desert areas. Temperatures are forecast to go into the high nineties and low one hundreds today. National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Sarad says it's because of an upper level of high pressure moving into southern California. I wo'll not to say it's early. Sometimes I do get some May heat waves, if you will, But this year it's been quite cool through May and early June so far, so it's going to be quite a shock for
people to experience the heat building in. He says temperatures should be back to normal by Sunday. Show Hey. Otani's former interpreter, Ibe Mizuhara, is due in court in Orange County to plead guilty to federal bank fraud charges. He pleaded not guilty last month as a formality while he negotiated with prosecutors on a deal involving a wide ranging illegal sports betting investigation. Mitsahara is accused of
stealing about sixteen seventeen million dollars from Otani to cover gambling debts. Okay, I do also feel quite so bad now, But a lot of younger Americans are just passing on artificial intelligence. A New York survey shows just four percent of fourteen to twenty two year olds say they use it daily, fifty percent say they have tried AI, forty one percent say they've never used generative AI,
and eight percent say they don't even know what AI tools are. Caltrans is being blamed for the massive fire in November that shut down the ten Freeway in downtown LA and costs thirty three million dollars to fix. A new report says caltrans ignored warning signs at the property under the freeway that was leased to
private parties. Voters will decide today whether to recall the president of the Temecula Valley School District over his support of a policy that requires teachers to notify parents if their child asked to be identified differently from his or her birth gender. Supporters of the recall say the policy is forced outing for kids. Close to one hundred fire hydrants have been stolen in La County so far this year. AUTH already say thieves are selling them at metal recycling yards. At six oh
five, TENDL on the news, and so it begins. A heat dome is forming over California. Our first big heat wave of this year is arriving right now. Let's say good morning to ABC's Karen Travers. Karen, immigration polling is one of the most important is choose of the twenty twenty four election. Yeah, And after saying for a really long time that Congress needs to fix the problem, President Biden appears to be ready to fix it on his
own. Yeah. And you know, they'll still say that Congress should have taken a lead on this and that it would be better done through a legislative path. But at this point, the President and the White House is looking to do something now. I should note this has not yet been announced yet for the President's schedule today. The White House is not confirming that this executive action is coming, but sources tell us that the President is going to is
getting ready to unveil what would be his most aggressive action on immigration. He will sign an executive order soon that would effectively end the asylum process, shut down the border for asylum seekers when migrant crossings surge. The threshold that they're looking at is when daily illegal encounters reach twenty five hundred between ports of entry.
Asylum Seekers at that point would be turned away, immediately sent back to their country of origin to wait until the daily average goes down, and once it does go down, they would then be able to come back and claim asylum. This could have an immediate impact. Say he signs this today, migrant crossings have been averaging thirty five one hundred a day thirty five hundred a
day in recent weeks, so that is above that threshold. And that means they could put that trigger in place and shut down the border for the asylum process. Okay, and Karen, so you said that's if they're coming across illegally. Does it affect the ones who are going through the ports of entry? No, that would not. I'm waiting to see the exact details of it, but that's a great question because this is between the ports of entry
where it is not legal to be coming through. Now this is complicated though, because technically the asylum process is where you come in and claim asylum. You can claim asylum, but they're making a distinction here, and we again, we don't have this yet. The executive order hasn't been released, so we're waiting to see what this looks like and how they're drawing that legal line there. Okay, And we don't know for sure, but your sources are
saying we'll find out today. So today, hopefully we get some mayors from Texas is coming to the White House today for an event that is not yet on the President's schedule, So tuned. Okay, Well, hopefully we can talk to you tomorrow and get more details. Yeah, all right, Karen Travers, thank you so much for the information. Appreciate it. All right, Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Opening statements are set to begin. In Hunter Biden's federal
gun case in Delaware, a jury was seated yesterday. First Lady Jill Biden was in the courthouse for that. ABC's Stephen Portnoy says one prospective juror was excused because she'd read Hunter Biden's book, which may be used by prosecutors as evidence. Other would be jurors were sent home because they'd heard news about the case, including one man who knew a plea deal had dissolved last year. Another man was dismissed because he said he couldn't be impartial in a case involving
gun law violations. That guy said he thinks owning a gun is a God given right. I think I'm going to change teams. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco says he is all in for Donald Trump for president. In a social media video that's gone viral, he called out Democrats in California for going soft on criminals and says he has no choice but to join the other team.
And I think it's time that instead of letting them out of jail and giving them alcohol and drugs and everything else, I think it's time we put a felon in the White House. He says he'll vote for Trump in twenty twenty four to make America great again. More than one and a half million people have viewed the video. More than fifty alleged street racers have been busted. In the high desert city of Atlanto, thirty seven adults and nineteen miners who
allegedly went onto a private property for the event were arrested. Samatdardino County Sheriff's Corporal Sarai Evans says investigators have noticed a trend of drivers sneaking onto properties to hold side shows, and Victorville is trying to curtel similar meats like this, like I said, due to the danger it poses to the community. Guns were recovered at the side show. Investigators say they were monitoring one of the
groups at the meet up ahead of the bust. Over the weekend in Samadardino County, Blake Trolley k if I news Doctor Pepper just Be came more popular than pepsi. It's now the country's second favorite soft drink behind coke. Data from Beverage Digest showed the soda with twenty three flavors had a slight lead over pepsi last year. Doctor Pepper's been around since nineteen eighty five. It's been
experimenting with new flavors and social media trends to gain traction. I love me a good dr Pepper, although I have to say I haven't had any in years. Okay, so, uh, have you ever just called somebody and not made a plan to call people? That's kind of how I do it, but apparently I'm doing it wrong. So as more and more people are more and more entrenched with texting, you're not supposed to call people without first making an appointment. I know. Cono's like what, so they're saying that
it calls that are unannounced really not socially acceptable anymore. Now. I know that like Nick and I talk, we text all the time, but I think we do sort of make appointments to talk on the phone. But that's probably just because you're so busy. Well that and I was gonna say, it's just the quick hit of like hey you got a minute, as opposed to you, you know, because we didn't have that luxury not that many years ago. So I mean, well, I guess now it's been enough
time. But it's always been that way. It's like, what are you up to? You got a second to talk. But I do have to say even I experience a certain level of anxiety when I look at the phone and go, I didn't know somebody was going to call me, And you know, twenty years ago didn't even factor in, Oh my god, I'm so excited somebody's calling. Now it's like, oh my god, what do I do? I have to answer it? So I feel you like this is a wild story. Well apparently it's the thing. And here's my here's
a couple of my pet peeves. Is one. I think it's fine for me. It's fine if people call without telling me they're going to call first mm hmm. But when they call and then don't leave a message, you're like, wait a second, did you mean to call me? Did you what dial me? What do you want? Do I need to call you back? Or was it just a high hello? So if you call me, please leave a message. Well, and on top of that, and
usually most of those messages are transcribed. So even if you you know, people always complain about the inky means of having to check the voicemail half the time. You don't need to anymore because your phone carrier already transcribes it for you and just sends it to your phone. So okay. Well, and apparently apparently there are some factors that come into play on whether you can call unannounced or not, and that depends on the relationship best friend's family, member's
husband's wives, that kind of thing. But it's okay to call friends and family without texting first, but not strangers. And I do kind of agree with that one. If it's somebody that I'm not expecting a phone call from, I would appreciate a heads up first, just to make sure you had time, you know. Yeah, all right, the new rules, I don't know if I can get on board with these. I might. I
might still just call you right out of the blue. President Biden's expected to take executive action to limit asylum seekers when the number of migrant crossings surge. The executive order is expected today. It would allow border authorities to turn away migrants seeking asylum who crossed between legal ports of entry. A lunar lander loaded with rocks from the far side of the Moon is already on its way back to Earth. China's lunar probe just landed on the Moon's surface over the weekend.
Before leaving, the unmanned lander planted China's flag on the surface of the Moon. The San Diego Zoo's working on its permit to host giant pandas, who will be on loan from China for the first time in five years. If everything's approved, the pandas could be headed to the San Diego Zoo as soon as this month. Ooh, I'm going to go see the pandas.
I'm excited. We're just minutes away from handle. On the news this morning, doctor Fauci faced off with lawmakers who are accusing him of not telling the truth about COVID nineteen origins and profiting off the pandemic, among other things. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's Jim Ryan. So, Jim, hackers are everywhere, they are, they are, They're everywhere, all
right. And Ticketmaster was one of the recent very very high profileigh profile Yes, yeah, well the parent company was Anyway Live Niche, which is the parent a Ticketmaster acknowledged that, yes, there was a breach five hundred and sixty million customers, not just in this country but around the world. Clearly the little five hundred and sixty million pieces of data out there that was leaked out in this breach. But at the same time or around the same time,
a bank called Santander. I don't know if you have those there, but Santander announced that it too had a bridge. What do they have in common? They're a cloud hosting company called Snowflake. I think the thinking is that perhaps the hackers got into both Live Nation Ticketmaster and into Santander through some you know, vulnerability at Snowflake, and so that's where this all is going.
But I was surprised this whole underground economy. You know Facebook. You've probably used Facebook Marketplace to sell something, right or you've seen it there at least, I mean friend of uses it all the time. Yeah, I've used it, sold a car on there in fact once. But instead of selling lawn tools or a car or a washing machine, folks go on to places like Exploit is the name of one of another one called breach forums.
These are sort of like dark web platforms where people go and sell items and bid on items and purchase and you know, it's really a shady kind of business anyway. So as somebody went on there, they opened up a new account on exploit and they said, I've got one point three terabytes of Ticketmaster data, including five hundred and sixty million people's information. So we assume that those are the actual hackers who got into Ticketmaster. They for those names,
addresses, email, some credit card details. These hackers wanted five hundred thousand dollars for that whole database. Don't know if they actually sold it, but it was up for sale. So hacking more and more, not just for the sake of hacking and causing laos, but because there's a big money in
it. Yeah, yeah, there is. There's that profit motive out there to doing this, and you know clearly what happens then once that data is sold, once your credit card information is sold, your name, your your birthday, people can piece it together and start opening up accounts in your name, credit card accounts, and who knows what they're buying, you know, and the concern or maybe the suspicion, perhaps it's even certain that there are
terrorist groups that are using your data to buy weapons and whatnot. So it's it's scary stuff and it's pretty widespread. So what do you do. Let's say you bought that next question. Yeah, so you bought tickets to something from Ticketmaster in the last few months, which I have. Okay, go in there whatever, whether it was the app or there, the website, whatever, you probably had to open a littleccount there to make the purchase.
Change the password to that today. Go in there the next commercial break and change the password to that. Right, check your credit card account, check your statement, whatever credit card you use to make those purchases. Watch for anything fishy. Get in touch with your credit card. If you think that your data was lost there, then contact the credit card company and you know, try to get a new account open or a new card sent to you. You got to try to avoid the old ones so you don't lose anything.
I just memorize this credit cards number, okay, memorial. Wow, you mustn't use that thing a lot. I know I use it too much. Okay. So you're talking about things that have been hacked, so like in this one, it sounds like they got everything, because a lot of times we hear about a hack and they go, oh, they got your name and they got your phone number, but they didn't get credit card information
or social security numbers. Well, in this case, they got some credit card details, at least according to the people who posted this on exploit. They said, we had we have some credit card details, maybe the last four digits. Who knows uh? Information on ticket sales, you know, the orders that you place through Ticketmaster. But hackers are really wily, and they have all sorts of technology at their disposal that a lot of people have,
right, so they can start generating numbers. If they have the last four of your credit card, they can start spinning out literally trillions of possible numbers to go with those last four numbers, right and anyway, once they piece together all this information and build a profile of you, then they can go out in your name and with your data and crime in all sorts of mayhem. Here's my big question, Jim, why would a company name itself
snowflakes? Nothing? There's no good connotation with snowflake. Well, it's like, are they running out of names? We haven't had a good name for a car in a long time, right, I mean they're all numbers and letters now jumbled together. They don't mean anything. It's not like a Jaguar or a same with drugs I've noticed that the more drugs that are put on the market, the weirder the names become. Well, gov we're govy ling
virik licks. You know, they seem to just be throwing letters in a hat, pulling them out and say, oh, here's what we're going to call our new irrectile dysfunction drug. All right. So the lesson we learn out of this is if you have a ticket Master account, check your credit card and probably change that password right now, and then, you know, just keep an eye on stuff. Yeah, And unfortunately this may just be the tip of the eyes and Snowflake has all sorts of clients, including MasterCard.
So oh I got one of those two. Yeah, keep an eye on it. Just keep change all your passwords or just try to stay ahead of it as best you can. That's the other thing that you know, they say, don't use things that you know. I mean, obviously don't use one, two, three, four, five, but like, don't use things you know. But you've got so many passwords. I've got fifty sixty seventy different passwords. I don't know how you're supposed to remember them.
If you're not supposed to one write them down or use something familiar. Well, you can use a password generator and a password wallet in your phone or you know, in your on your laptoping and computer, and it will generate a new password and put that in. You know, it won't make any sense to you. Don't bother trying to memorize it. As long as your your phone or your laptop can remember it, then great, You're in good shape there. All right, I guess I'm gonna have to look into that
now. More digits the better. Okay, thank you, Jim Ryan, all right, talk to you soon. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. The La County Board of Supervisors will vote on whether to ask the state for more help with black bear encounters in the San Gabriel Mountains. Supervisor Catherine Barger says communities like Siera Mantre I've seen more bears than usual in recent years, sometimes in people's homes.
The bears are going to be looking for trash because they want to feed themselves, so it's important to keep the public who live and visit these foothill communities safe. Barger says the state is better equipped to educate and protect the public and could also assist local police in answering bear related calls. LA County buildings in Downey have raised the Pride flag despite the city voting against it. The city Council in Downey weeks ago voted to stop putting a Pride flag at
city Hall. Mayor Mario Trujillo, who's openly gay, joined officials yesterday at the County Office of Education to raise the flags elsewhere. So today I want every kid in Dawn to know, yeah, you're safe. County Supervisor Jennis Han organized the Pride flag event. She says all eight of the county's buildings and facilities in the city would have rainbow flags waving above them. Michael Monks
KFI News. Today is National Cheese Day. The magic of making cheese is thought to have started somewhere around eight thousand BC, shortly after the domestication of animals, and now there are thousands of different types of cheeses. Thank goodness. I love cheese. The most popular of all mozzarella, though half of all cheese consumed in the world is Gudha. I think most all cheeses are
Gouda. I know, yeah, okay. This is KFI and kost HD two Los Angeles, Orange County. We lead local live from the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. I'm Amy King. This has been your wake up Call.
