You're listening to wake Up Call on demand from kf I A M six forty k if I hand kost H D two, Los Angeles, Orange County Age. Would you like to see something strange? I'm with the sun Lucy this time this fun screen. It's time for your morning wake up call. What's Here's Amy King. This is your wake up call for Wednesday, October twenty
fifth. Good morning, I'm Amy King. Thanks for waking up. You know, we're less than a week out from Halloween and playing that music, I can see everybody in different rooms and we've all been dancing, so maybe you're dancing a little bit this morning. Great way to start your day. And again, thank you for joining us this morning. I'm feeling very grateful
this morning. Grateful for technology too, because I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday and I was like, Hey, how you doing, And she said, oh, my husband's in the hospital and he ended up getting a stint put in his heart because he had a blocked artery. Apparently he was exercising a couple of days ago and got that sharp pain in his chest and his doctor convinced him to go to the emergency room. Now and less than twenty four hours later he was in surgery and they sent me pictures of
the artery. It's called the Widow Maker. My cousin had this too and had the surgery and he's doing great years later, but he's had the stint, and they show that before and after pictures. It is amazing they open the artery with a stint. So thankful that they've made such great strides on taking care of peoples and their hearts. And hopefully Monty is on the road to recovery. But that's why I'm feeling grateful today. Hopefully you have something
to be grateful for. Two. Here's what's ahead. On wake Up Call, a UN relief agency says it will have to cease operations in the Gaza Strip if it doesn't get more fuel. Without the fuel, the agency says it can't distribute any aid to the six hundred thousand Palestinians taking shelter at UN facilities. Israel says it's not letting any fuel into the Gaza Strip, fearing
it would just be used by Hamas in its war with Israel. As quickly as he was nominated majority whip, but Tom Emmer has dropped out of the race. For Speaker of the House. Republicans have now nominated Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson for Speaker. We're gonna check in with ABC Stephen Portnoy about the musical chairs of the speakership in just a couple of minutes. Time has recognized cow Fire and Alert California's AI wildfire detector as the best invention of twenty twenty three.
Over one thousand cameras with AI are being used to detect smoke and stop wildfires before they can grow. In the first two months of the program, the system had correctly identified seventy seven fires before any nine one one calls came in. At six oh five, It's handle on the news, Mark Meadows has been granted immunity that means he could testify in the federal election interference case against President Trump. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of
the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Israel claims its latest air strikes in Gdza have killed Hamath's commanders and hit militants as they got ready to fire rockets into Israel. There have been four hundred air strikes against Gaza in twenty four hours,
more than three hundred strikes the day before. US National Security Coordinator John Kirby says a US special envoy is working to get the hundreds of Americans to a safe place, and he's also talking to partners, particularly Egypt, about the possibility of others getting out through RAFA again, Innocent civilians of many different nowstionalities, certainly Palestinians, that want to leave and should be allowed to leave an active war zone. He says more needs to be done before a pause
in the war could even happen. A driver accused of crashing into and killing four Pepperdine University students as they walked along pch in Malibu has been charged with four counts of murder. Legal analyst Royal Oaks explains prosecutors possible reasoning for the
murder charges. It seems strange to charge somebody with murder involving of vehicular homicide, But if a person knows the distinct possibility that his actions will result in death, even if he didn't intend it, that justifies murder in the second degree. The twenty two year old man was arrested yesterday, a week after the crash. He's being held on eight million dollars bail. Actor Richard Roundtree
has died. He was best known for his role as Detective John Shaff in the action thriller Shaft, as well as two sequels and a TV series. He also appeared in films like City Heat and George of the Jungle. His longtime manager says Roundtree died yesterday at home in LA after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was eighty one. Let's say good morning to ABC's Stephen
portnoy So. Stephen. After meetings and secret votes, Tom Emmer was announced as the next Speaker of the House nominee and that lasted about an hour four to be precise, four hours and twelve minutes actually, but look. Tom Emmer flamed out yesterday in part because he was viewed as not conservative enough.
The Minnesota congressman, who is the House majority whip, was confronted with the problem that he needs to get right with Jesus, in the words of one congressman from Georgia, because he supports the right of same sex couples to marry. He also found himself facing the ire of former President Trump, who said in a social media post that Republicans would be making a tragic mistake if they
chose Tom Emmer to be their speaker. So Tom Emmer, who voted to uphold the results of the twenty twenty election, got the heave ho and Republicans late last night rallied around a Louisiana congressman named Mike Johnson. Never heard of him. Fifty one years old, four term congressman from Shreveport. He is
a conservative legal mind. He came to prominence in Louisiana politics for his work for the Southern Baptist Convention, and he is someone who worked in twenty twenty to get colleagues to sign on to an amicus brief that he helped draft that aimed to change the results of the twenty twenty election and get the Supreme Court
to intervene to overturn the results from states such as Pennsylvania. The Supreme Court did not take up that case, so Mike Johnson brought cameras into the meeting room yesterday to have America wake up this morning to pictures of him being rallied around by fellow Republicans. He spoke to reporters briefly and said that the Republican Conference is now united and ready to move forward. And so that's the image that people will have this morning of Mike Johnson being hailed by his colleagues and
being cheered. We'll see if at midday today he truly does have enough support to win the gabble. But I will tell you Amy that this morning, there is a lot of momentum behind Mike Johnson. There are not the kind
of whispers and recriminations. And maybe it's a function of the fact that Republicans have seemingly exhausted all their other options and feel that they have no choice but to settle on someone not very well known to the country, but someone who's well regarded in their caucus, someone who's a champion of the impeachment inquiry for
example, and other things. You know, a challenge for Mike Johnson, and this will be something we'll talk about if he does win the gable is the challenge is the difficulty that someone who doesn't have as much experience legislating as for example, Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell, or Joe Biden going into negotiations
over government spending. You know, Mike Johnson may be a principled conservative, but he's not been around the law as long and has not perhaps seen as much as some of these other men have, and may not know where some of the bodies are buried, may not know strategically how to play things as well as the other men on the other of the table. Mit, So we'll see. But look, Mike Johnson, as I say, has momentum.
He has the support of most in his conference. There were roughly twenty Republicans who didn't attend last night's roll call, maybe because they were simply exhausted, so they're not yet on the record as to whether they'll vote for him on the floor. But I think this morning the expectation is that Mike Johnson has about a good a chance as anyone so far of actually winning the speakership. Okay, we'll have to wait and see. And the vote's supposed to
happen like nine o'clock right your time. Yes, Okay, great, Steven Portinoy, thanks for the update. Appreciate it. You got it is like a giant musical chairs with these speaker nominees. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. California is leading a coalition of thirty three states and assuing social media giant Meta for allegedly harming the mental health of young people. Our investigation has found that Meta has misled
its users and that it's putting our children in harm's way. There's a mountain of growing evidence that social media as an negative impact on our children. Attorney General Rob Bonta filed the federal lawsuit against the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, claiming prolonged use of social media results in higher levels of depression, anxiety, body image issues, and other harm. We're going to be talking more
about this with ABC's Mike Debuski at five twenty. Pretty fascinating stuff. A woman who allegedly stabbed and decapitated her mother in Almonte has been charged with murder. The La County DA charged the woman with one count of murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon, with allegations that she used the knife and the killing. This neighbor has lived across the street for years and says
he's never seen or heard the family have any issues. I mean, it's definitely a little scary to know that stuff can happen like that, but I mean, just along with everything I know, anything can happen anywhere. Police found the mother's body Sunday evening with multiple stab wounds and pulled out what appeared to be ahead from a trash bin. The DA said yesterday. If convicted,
the woman faces life in prison. Chris Adler kaf I News. The DMV has revoked the license of the Cruise robo taxi service owned by General Motors, which had just started offering rides in San Francisco. Officials determined the driverless cars are a dangerous menace. The indefinite suspension of Cruise Robotaxis comes two months after the Public Utilities Commission approved an expansion that authorized around the clock rides throughout
San Francisco. Also came not too long after somebody was hit by one of the Cruse taxis. The person was actually hit by another vehicle that kind of threw him into the path of the taxi, and the taxi drove over him, and then the person got pinned underneath and had to be extracted by jaws of life. Pretty bad injuries. An internal memo sent to border agents in San Diego has warned terrorists from the Israel Hamas war may try to illegally cross
the California Mexico border. Sources in the agency say the memo, dated October twentieth, was issued by an intelligence unit in the San Diego sector and was only sent to a few people. The memo includes color photos of patches from Hamas, Palestinian Islami Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and Hesbola. Governor Newsom has met with Chinese President Xijin Ping and other government officials in Beijing. He signed a new climate focused memo of understanding with China's
National Development and Reform Commission. Newsom's office says the governor also talked about his visit to the Middle East and how China can play a role in diffusing tensions in the region. Hurricane Otis has hit Mexico's southern Pacific coast as a Category five storm. Acapulco and surrounding towns have seen heavy rains and winds up to
one hundred and sixty five miles per hour. Otis was downgraded to a category four storm and expected to weaken quickly in the state of Guerrero's steep mountains, but five to ten inches of rain is in the forecast, and that has raised the threat of land's slides and floods. Hey, I don't know if you use Ways and Google Maps. I know I do. I don't know if you know this, but I'm actually the voice of Ways, so I can kind of get you anywhere. When the at first started, they they
and I came to an agreement and I voiced that app. So it's kind of a fun little thing for me. But you can't use it now in Israel or the Guy's strip. This is really fascinating, I thought, but Google and Ways, at the request of the Israeli military, have disabled their live traffic conditions and updates and they're saying it's out of consideration for the safety of local communities because live traffic information could reveal Israeli troop movements if they go
in for a ground assault. The company also did this in Ukraine last year after Russia invaded, so kind of a cool move, very strategic. And also I want to tell you about Croc Cowboy boots. We talked about these the other day because they just came out on Monday, the twenty third, and they're a hit, like they're selling out, and so the Croc people are obviously very excited because they were like Hey, we got these really weird looking boots. So it's like a mix of a croc and a cowboy boot,
so it's basically a foam cowboy boot. And I've looked at pictures of them online. They're kind of funky. But after the first day they were running out. They just had certain select sizes available. And of the people who got them, they're saying things like nothing says yeha, like having a pair of spiky wheels attached to your feet, because apparently they have the little things on the back of them. And one guy said that these boots are
like the love child of John Wayne and the marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. He says they'll hug your feet like a country love song that's from Stylish Gambino out of La. I still think they're weird looking. Striking hotel workers are planning to march through downtown La today. Workers from fifty hotels are expected to join in. The union says the rally will be in protest of poverty wages and the hotels hiring homeless refugees to replace striking workers. People won't be able to
cruise in San Francisco. The DMV has suspended the driverless taxi service, citing unreasonable risk to public safety. A Cruise driverless car recently ran over a pedestrian. The Arizona Diamondbacks are headed to the World Series for the first time in twenty years after winning the National League Championship Series with a four to two Game seven win over Philadelphia that sets up a Diamondbacks Rangers World Series. Game one
is Friday. I hate to see it, but at least if they beat the Dodgers, they didn't you know, tank in the next one, and they really are on a roll. At six oh five, it's handle on the news. Former President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen has testified that Trump liked to mess with the numbers a lot. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's technology reporter Mike Dubuski. Good morning, Nike, Mike. We have thirty three states going after Meta. What's it all about. Yeah,
that's right. So California and Colorado kind of led this effort, a total of thirty three state attorneys general filing a joint lawsuit against Meta in the Northern District of California. At the same time, nine more state attorneys general filed similar legal action in their own states and districts. Meta, of course, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, a few other apps.
The ags here are alleging that the company designed what they call psychologically manipulative features into their apps, essentially inducing this compulsive behavior in its users, specifically younger users children, tricking these kids into spending more time on the app, forcing them down rabbit holes of toxic and harmful contents, allege, and they say
that Meta did this for their own financial benefit. Obviously, the more time you spend on their apps, the more time you spend looking at ads, the better that is for Meta. The ag say this violates consumer protection law as well as child privacy law, and they're looking for financial penalties against the company as well as an injunction that would force Meta to shut down certain aspects of its business. What kind of aspects would they be forced to shut down,
It's a little unclear at this point. So the lawsuit that was filed in the Northern District of California, it's a two hundred and thirty three page document. It's pretty heavily redacted, which means that it's kind of tough to get a full picture of what the ags have here both in terms of what they're looking for and exactly what evidence they have to support their allegations. There's
two buckets here. It's important to remember amy, right. There's the manipulative practices bucket, which has to do with things like harmful recommendation and algorithms that Instagram and Facebook use. Right, every time you scroll through your Instagram feed, the more time you linger on certain posts or if you like or comment, well, then the algorithm knows that you like that sort of thing,
and it's going to show you more of that. Well. They say that this creates a rabbit hole if you like, you know, misleading content, it can lead to some more dangerous things down the line. They also cite notifications, you know, your phone lighting up with Facebook or and Instagram notification that releases a little bit of dopamine in your brain because people want to get
in contact with you and talk to you. That could be harmful to people whose brains are not fully developed, children, teenagers, that sort of thing. Things like photo filters. We're also, you know, in discussion here from the AG's perspective, we usually talk about this with relation to Snapchat, but Instagram offers them as well, these filters that change your appearance. The ages say that this could potentially be harmful to people creating issues of body dysmorphia,
or maybe your body's not perfect enough. That's you know, another concern here and Amy, it's also worth mentioning this is nothing new. It's not like there's new information coming to light here. We remember back in twenty twenty one, Francis Hagen, a very high profile whistleblower former Facebook executive, testified before Congress largely about exactly this, saying that not only did Facebook design these features, but they knew that they were harmful to kids, and they did
it anyway. The AGS actually began investigating this before Francis Hagan testified around the time that Instagram was playing around with an idea called Instagram Kids, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, Amy, a version of Instagram design specifically for people under thirteen. You know, it's interesting too, all those things that you're saying, I'm like, yep, been sucked into that.
Yep, been sucked into that. I mean my our producer and we were just talking yesterday about how she will sit after work and just scroll through videos and videos and she said, and then it knows what kind of videos I like, and it feeds me more of them, and some are better at this than others. Right. I know a lot of people talk about TikTok as having a particularly you know, active algorithm. Right, It's easy to fall into those rabbit holes where it might not be on some of the TikTok
competitors, things like YouTube shorts or Meta's own Instagram reels. The question, though, I think that's interesting to consider here, is is any of this illegal technically? Right? We know that these tools are there and that they are addictive, but when it comes to actual evidence, right, A lot of the studies that have been done into social media's effect on younger users are small or they're narrow, so it's kind of hard to get a full picture
of exactly what the problem is here. A lot of that comes back to the fact that the data that we could use to service those studies is behind closed doors at Meta and x and TikTok and Snapchat and others. And they probably don't want to give it up. Of course they don't, right, I mean why would they? And you know, again, this is financially beneficial to them. It's worth highlighting how META responded to this as well.
They say that they're disappointed that instead of working productively with companies across the industry to create a clear, age appropriate standard, that the AGS decided to go in this direction. They also highlighted the more than thirty tools that they say are designed to mitigate some of the allegations that these AGS have leveled, and that's kind of how they're pushing back against this. I think you can expect Meta to attempt to dismiss this case, fight it in court, but it
is really significant Amy. I think that you know, there's forty attorneys general here from both sides of the aisle. Total. When was the last time you got forty of anybody to agree on anything, let alone attorneys general from the Democrat and Republican sides of the isle. So okay, so the lawsuit's been filed, and when are we going to see any kind of action or is this going to just be played out for years? You know, we'll
see. As I mentioned, we can expect Meta to their first step to be to try and dismiss this case or make an effort to dismiss this case. Beyond that, it will be up to a judge to decide, you know, whether to go forward with this. There have been actions taken at the state level in this world before against social media. Some judges have agreed with Metis, some have not. You will have to see exactly how this
plays out. I think another aspect of this that's interesting to talk about is why we're seeing this at the state level, right as opposed to the federal level. Joe Biden and many in Congress have talked about the dangers of social media in the past, but we have not seen any large scale internet regulation from Congress. So I think that's why you're seeing this happen at the state
level. And let's remember thirty nine states across the Union. Both the legislature and the governor's office are controlled by a single party, which means that it's easier to pass legislation, it's easier to pass regulation. So it's an interesting moment here. You know, when we're talking about tech regulation, you know it could come from the states, might not come from the federal government. Okay, ABC's News Technology reporter Mike Dobuski, Thanks so much, Mike,
Compete, appreciate your insights this morning. Of course, we'll be watching that suit. Still lots more coming up. On wake Up Call, We're going to be talking to Jordana Miller in Jerusalem, and also Nick Poliochanni and I are getting spooky. Oh and one other thing I want to mention real quick. Yesterday we were talking about with Joel Larsgard about the high prices of diet coke and I was going, I'm not paying eight or nine dollars for a
twelve pack. And our editor Carla did a little googling and she saw that diet coke is going on sale at Ralph's today for three ninety nine for a twelve pack. Thought you might want to know in case you want to try to save some money too. It's time for Amie's on It. Aamie's on it, AMI's on it, Damie's on it. And since it's the spooky season, instead of looking at haunted houses and shows on TV, we're looking at actual haunted houses, hotels, towns, and even ships in California.
So I've got Nick Poliochanni to get a little spooky with me this morning. Nice laugh. I like it, Okay, I try so. There are several places around California that several people say they're really haunted, and you just went to check out one of them, and that's the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. I haven't been there since I was a kid, but any spooky things happened while you were there, Oh my gosh. So Sarah Winchester is the owner, was the former owner, and she bought the house in
eighteen eighty six. It was an eight bedroom farmhouse and she expanded it to thirty eight bedrooms and twenty twenty two dens and I think it was sixteen bathrooms. Anyway, Yeah, it's creepy, let me tell you Amy, And
being up there. The whole concept was that Sarah bought the house and because she is the heir to the Winchester fortune, all those people who had been killed by Winchester rifles had followed her to this home, and so she was building all of these rooms and all these additions to be able to both appease
the ghost but also to help allegedly protect her from the ghost. So the way the protected herself was she did a lot of really weird things, like she has stair she built stairways in the house, or have them built that go nowhere, they end it doors, or they just stop in there, and she slept in a different room every night because she didn't want the ghost to catch up with her. Right and better yet is the incredible door to
nowhere on the second floor that literally just walks out. If you walk out the door, you would end up on a pathway down below, just like right out of it. So it's wild. It's a beautiful place in the middle of San Jose. The city has just been built up around it, but it is creepy, especially as the sun goes down in that area and
then they have unhinged. Housewarming was their Halloween overlay, which took that story of Sarah Winchester and made it even more so with kind of a you know, a created story around somebody that are a couple from Hollywood that had gone in and bought the house and what happened to them after they moved in. Okay, speaking of Hollywood, another spooky place the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. It opened in nineteen twenty seven, and the hotel used to have a lot of
celebrity guests and apparently some have never checked out. Marilyn Monroe's even one of the ghosts believed to haunt the historic Hollywood Hotel. Okay, here's another one. It does freak me out. I don't know that I believe in this whole thing, but it's still is freaky. In places like the Winchester House are very they're just spooky. Here's there's a lot of energy there. Yeah, it definitely feels a little heavy, if that makes sense. Okay,
yeah, okay. So here's a whole town. It's a Body State Historic Park which is northeast of Yosemite, and it was a once booming little gold mining town, but now it's kind of frozen in time, and there are reports of phantom voices and ghostly apparitions roaming through the town. You can go for day and night tours. You can explore the preserved buildings and hear the tales of the ghostly inhabit tints. Here's another one. This isn't very far
away either. If you want to go check it out, the Hotel del Coronado. If you've been there. Oh, did we lose Nick? Okay, no, oh, that was an inquiry. I didn't know it was me. Yes, no, no, no. I used to live in San Diego when I was a kid, so I did go out to the Hotel Dell quite often and it's a very beautiful property out on Coronado Island. So this is down deep in the depths of San Diego, but yeah,
it is definitely the same. And there are many many stories in and around the Del Coronado that are just really creepy and people that have made it their final resting place, if you will, that checked in and never checked out. Oh yeah, they've died under mysterious circumstances. Hey, if you're going to go and you want to hang out somewhere for a couple of millennia, why not make it the Hotel Del Core. Then there's also the Queen Mary.
And I have stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach and it's described as a floating ghost ship. Over one hundred and fifty spirits are thought to reside there. So when we stayed overnight, which was very cool, but I know that when we got out of our little the cabins at night, we were a little uh, here's my big word of the day, trepidacious
and a little bit nervous. We didn't see anything, but like when you hear noises and little bumps in the night, you go ooh, maybe, And they have guided tours at the Queen Mary, including ghost hunts, so that's kind of a fun one. And then have you been to Alcatraz. I have, It's been a little while, but this is really cool because
that's just out in the middle of San Francisco Bay. I didn't realize that I was there supposedly haunted, but apparently oh yeah, yeah, allegedly there's so many inmates there that may have found their demise at the hands of other inmates or possibly by the people who worked there. So there's a lot of backstory to the things there. And think about it, a prison in the middle of the water that you can't get in and out of without having you know, I mean, there's a lot of built around that. Even if
it's just legend, there's just so much a tied to that history. Yeah, okay, And one more also down in San Diego. It is thought to be one of the most haunted houses in America. It's Wayley House and I have not been to this, but you can go on ghost tours. They have nighttime visits for those brave enough to explore. And the reason that they think this one is so haunted is it was built on a former gallows
site, and that the Whalley family and other spirits roam the house. And that's an old town San Diego and it's really worth it either day or night to go visit and check it out. But yeah, it's a lot of fun. And there is still a graveyard there on site as well. That adds to the spooking factor. All right. So those are just some of the places. There are seven spine chilling haunted locations around the California around California, inside and out. And you still have time. There's six days till
Halloween if you want to go get a little spooky. Thank you, Nick Poliochini. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Claremont police are trying to find a homeless man accused of stabbing another man at a train station. Investigator say forty one year old Philip Burunda should be considered armed and dangerous. The Claremont Police Department says it's arrested Burunda fourteen times since twenty nineteen. This man, who works in downtown
Claremont, says homelessness has gotten worse over the last couple of years. You used to be able to hang out in some of the areas here, like the parking structure and the train station would be some areas like we would like to hang out, but now we don't da gas. Goode's office says Brunda has been hit with different sentences, including a more than one year sentence for burglary in twenty twenty one in Claremont Lake Trolley k if I News House.
Republicans have chosen Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson as their latest nominee for Speaker. Johnson thanked the public for their patients after he was nominated last night, saying he and his fellow Republicans will operate like a well oiled machine. Thank you for allowing us to go through the process and get to this. It was worked it and we are going to serve you well. Still not clear if Johnson has the votes needed to secure the gavel. A vote is likely to happen
at about nine this morning. The four or five improvement project in Orange County is expected to be completed December first. It'll have two new regular lanes between the six oh five and Seal Beach and Euclid Street and Fountain Valley and new express lanes between the six oh five and Highway seventy three and OC. Work on the project started way back in twenty eighteen. Striking hotel workers are planning to march through downtown LA today. Workers from fifty hotels are expected to join
in. Earlier this week, the union accused hotels of replacing striking workers with homeless migrants. People won't be able to cruise in San Francisco. The DMV has pulled the license of the driverless taxi service owned by General Motors, citing unreasonable risk to public safety. A cruise driverless car recently ran over a pedestrian.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are headed to the World Series for the first time in twenty years after winning the now National League Championship Series with a four to two Game seven win over Philadelphia that sets up a Diamondbacks Rangers World Series. Game one is Friday. We're just minutes away from handle. On the news this morning, there's another nominee for House Speaker, the second in less than twenty four hours. Right now, let's say good morning to ABC's White House correspondent
Karen Travers. Karen is Israel continues to bombard the Gaza Strip ahead of a possible ground assault. A lot of calls are coming for a ceasefire, but the White House apparently not on board. No very explicit yesterday that they do not support a ceasefire. The White House said they want to see all measures of protections for civilians in Gaza, and they want to see the ability to get aid into Gaza. But National Security spokesman John Kirby said yesterday a ceasefire
right now only benefits Hamas. What the White House is saying, though, is that humanitarian pauses must be considered to protect civilians in Gaza and get that aid in. But the distinction there may be is that that's a temporary tactic and very targeted for where it would be in terms of moving people to safety or giving cover for aid to get in unfettered, as John Kirby put it.
And this is very different, they say, than a cease fire, which John Kirby said several times yesterday would only work for Hamas right now. The President was asked yesterday, are you urging Israel to delay its ground invasion, and he said, Israel has to make its own decisions. So we're basically saying more hands off, although there's been a lot of rumbling that the
US is urging Israel to slow things down. Yeah, and we're hearing that from sources that you know, behind the scenes, or at least not publicly, the White House is advising for a delay, advising, I think, maybe a little different than urging, but saying, you know, this gives more time for hostages to be released, more time to get much needed humanitarian assistance into Gaza. But that is unlikely to be a message that the White
House puts out publicly because of what the President said yesterday. They don't want to appear to be telling the Israelis what to do. The message publicly has been that Israel has a right and a duty to defend itself and that the US is going to stand with them and support them as they do it. Okay, And there was talk yesterday that they were negotiating for a large group of hostages, which could maybe make Israel take a little pause as opposed to
like the one or two that have been trickling out. Yeah, we're told that talks are ongoing between the US and partners in the region, which would include Israel, Egypt, and Katar, to try and secure the release of a large number of hostages held by Hamas and Gaza. No updates on where that stands okay, And before I let you go, we've got a state
dinner tonight. Yes, the Prime Minister of excuse me on Israel Australia so used to saying that right now Australia, Anthony ALBINIZI will be coming in about an hour to the South Lawn here for a big arrival ceremony of pomp and circumstance. He and the President will meet me over office and later hold a press conference in the Rose Garden and then tonight the lavish state dinner on the White House South Lawn hosted by the President and the First Lady. Okay,
Karen Travers, thanks so much. The business in Washington, d C. Goes on, and we'll continue to watch what's happening across the ocean over in Israel. Thanks so much for taking some time with us this morning. Thank you. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four our newsroom. LAPD chief morses since the war in Israel began, hate crimes against Jewish people have spiked, Moore says, hours after the war
broke out, his department was redirecting patrols to targeted areas. October seventh, hate crimes have surged forty percent, with forty nine hate crimes reported for these two week period first thirty five for the same period last year. That's an increase of fourteen additional hate crime. Moore says hate incidents against Muslims and Arabs have also gone up. He says there's no credible threat for a mass attack
