Representative Matt Gates has filed emotion to take the speakership away from Representative Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy responded minutes later on social media, saying, bring it on. Let's get started with some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Thousands of
healthcare workers are prepared to strike if negotiations with Kaiser don't improve. The workers say they're protesting unfair labor practices and unsafe staffing levels. They say they'll hit the picket lines tomorrow at six am if their demands are not met today. The union says the three day action would be the largest healthcare worker strike in US history, affecting seventy five thousand workers across the country. Late night shows
have returned as striking Hollywood actors continue labor talks with the studios. The Late Show with Stephen COLBERTI on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon were some of the first shows to return last night after writers ended a five month strike. Writers got the green light to get back to work after the WGA approved a three year contract with major studios. Actors started bargaining again with production companies yesterday after
nearly two months of silence. Writers are expected to ratify their deal with the AMPTP early this month. Sagaftres says it's scheduled to meet with studios to continue negotiating tomorrow. Chris Adler KFI News former Elly Kenny supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas his filed papers asking to be allowed to remain free while he appeals his conviction on federal corruption charges. He was sentenced in August to three years and six months
in federal prison starting November thirteen. His lawyers say Ridley Thomas should be allowed to stay out of prison during appeals because he's not likely to flee and does not pose a danger to the community. Republican Congressman Matt Gates's filed emotion to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker. ABC's Rachel Scott says the resolution would set a snap vote this week, though only a handful of hard right Republicans have signaled
that they're willing to vote to remove McCarthy. All of this comes after how Speaker Kevin McCarthy made a deal with Democrats working with them and moderate Republicans to keep the government open and funded. McCarthy responded on social media to Gates's effort yesterday, saying, bring it on. A nine year old girl who disappeared in Upstate New York has been found safe. The little girl was found in a cabinet cupboard. She's rescued, and she knew she was being rescued.
She knew that she was in safe hands. Governor Kathy Hockle says Charlotte Sana disappeared during a bike ride Saturday while on a family camping trip. The US Postal Service has released a postage stamp that honors the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The stamp celebrates what Postal Service or what the Postal Service calls Ginsburg's groundbreaking contributions to justice, gender equality, and the rule of law. It's five oh
six. Let's say good morning now to ABC's White House correspondents Karen Travers. Karen, President Biden says, we made a deal, but Speaker McCarthy said, no, we didn't. So is it a Biden gaff or something in the work. So we just don't know about you know, it could be
more the latter on that one, but the White House wasn't saying. So this goes back to Sunday when the President was giving remarks about the short term deal to avert a government sh down, the legislation that Congress passed on Saturday that he signed into law, and he was asked the question, or are you going to be able to trust Speaker McCarthy when the next deal comes around? And the President said, we just made one about Ukraine, so we'll
find out. Well, no surprise. That's going to spark a lot of questions about what's this deal about Ukraine? Well, what are you talking about here? And what will this look like going forward? Because remember that Ukraine funding that the White House wanted, twenty four billion dollars, was left out of the short term extension. It did not get included in because there was a lot of resistance, not a lot vocal, loud resistance among some conservative
Republicans. So McCarthy did not put this in, and now the White House is still pushing for it. But yesterday the White House wouldn't say what the President meant, would not even explain what that comment was about. McCarthy has denied that there's any sort of deal right now, but the White House says that they're expecting that McCarthy will put forward this funding for a vote, that
there's bipartisan support for it in the House and Senate. But the reason this has become such a political hot potato is because Matt Gates, as you guys know, has put forward this motion to push Kevin McCarthy out of his job, is how speaker. One of the things he's now citing is this secret deal he says McCarthy has made about Ukraine funding with the President. It's not
the only thing. There's been a whole list of things. He's been kind of moving towards this for some time but now this has become another part of it, saying, you know, look, McCarthy keeps making agreements with Democrats, he keeps working with Democrats and siding with them over Republicans, and now he's even working with the President on Ukraine funding. Okay, but so backroom
deals are nothing new totally. This happens all the time. I mean, it wouldn't be surprising if the President and McCarthy did not talk over the weekend and there was a conversation where they said, look, this did not get included because we have to just get something done or to get something that can pass. But we are now going to move forward and just put it up
for a vote. And that's what the White House has been calling for because they say, you know, we understand there's a ton of politics involved in the government spending fight over the last couple of weeks, but they insist. From Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor, to other senior officials, they'll say, if you just voted straight up on Ukraine funding, it would pass in the Senate and it would pass in the House if there was nothing else
attached to it. That there is bipartisan support in both chambers for this, but there's just this very loud resistance from some Republicans and that's why Kevin McCarthy hasn't moved forward on it. And you know there's political dynamics at play, of course, but the White House trying to put a little bit of pressure on McCarthy saying, you know, this can get done. Let's get it
done. Yeah, And McCarthy had said when he was talking about on Saturday, because I remember hearing him say, we got to keep the government open. I'm putting through this continuing Resolution without a bunch of stuff in it. It'll deal with Ukraine. We're not leaving Ukraine out, We're just not putting it in this and that's what the White House is kind of clinging to at
this point, Karine said. Yesterday, Speaker McCarthy was on the air TV radio multiple times saying that he wants to continue to support Ukraine to get the weapons that they need. So she said, we're going to hold him to that. That's something he said, it's a commitment he has made. So they're really putting the lean on him. But of course he's getting it from
all sides right now. And we saw last night that motion to vacate, the wonky term that basically means they're now the clock is ticking, the official clock is started for the process to try and remove him as Speaker. And the numbers are really challenging for him because it's such a small Republican majority. He can only afford to lose four Republicans so far, five have already signaled publicly they would vote him out, so he would need Democrats to support him
to save his leadership job. And my Democrats vote from saying, hey, you just did us a solid by doing the continuing resolution, so we're not going to fight this one. I mean you talked about like side deals and agreements and back deals. You gotta think there's gonna be a lot of conversations over the next thirty six hours of what's in it for us, Like why would they do that unless there is some concession to them and what they can
get out of it. There is no indication publicly yet about what Democrats are going to do. A lot of questions to the White House yesterday about what the President thinks about this, what does he think Democrats on the Hills should be doing, how they should be voting. Kareem would not say. The president's position basically said, this is up to House Republicans to sort out. But it's not just up to House Republicans. It's also up for the Democrats
at this point too. Okay, And before I let you go, when when is this they're going to do a snap vote on this whole recall the speaker ship thing. Yeah, the next day or two. Yeah, So, because it's a forty eight hour process from the time that motion to vacate it started last night, I guess probably evening our time, you know, early evening year time. So we're looking at Wednesday night. All right. As always, thank you so much for your information and insight, Karen,
have a great day. Thanks. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. But tomorrow's at eleven twenty hours time is going to be a nationwide test, which means that all TVs and radios and cell phones around the US should be getting this emergency alert. So again it's not only for broadcast TV, but it's also for cable

It's a test that they've been doing since twenty eleven, I believe is when they first did the first nationwide tests. So it's happening at eleven twenty. Don't be freaked out. Just know what's happening and most of us are going to hear it. Here's what we're following in the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A three day strike involving about forty percent of
Kaiser Permanente employees in California and six other states could start tomorrow morning. Kayser says it is still negotiating with leaders of several unions in hopes of reaching a tentative deal. Ford Motor Company is laying off three hundred and thirty more employees due to the UAW strike against them. General Motors and Stilantis Fort said layoffs are the result of the strike that recently expanded to its Chicago assembly plant.
The Golden Globe Awards says it's membership is now diversified. The membership now includes three hundred journalists from around the world. That is what the Golden Globes people say is sixty percent racially diversive and forty seven percent female. The eighty first Golden Globe Awards will be handed out January seventh at six oh five. It's handled on the news. Sag Aftra and the Hollywood Studios met for a whole
day. That's pretty much all they're saying about the negotiations yesterday. Right now, let's say good morning to the host of How to Money right here on KFI. It's Joel lars Guard. Good morning, Joel, morning Amy. So first let's talk about there's some money things that are coming up, like a tax deadline. Oh yeah, that's right. So normally, you know, we're talking about filing taxes in April, but everyone remembers the winter storms,
right that happened. So because of that, the tax stadline was pushed back to October sixteenth for basically everyone in the state of California. And so it's it's important to get your taxes done on time, and so this was an extension. Nobody had to actually go in there and request the extension. It was just granted to everyone. And so if you haven't filed your taxes yet, the time the clocks ticking, so it's time to time to get
on that. Yeah, on Monday the sixteenth, and you know, I did my taxes on time because even though I knew I had that extra six months and I knew I had to pay, so I could have not paid until now. I was like, it's going to get out of my mind. I'm going to completely forget about it, and then I'll get a reminder on the radio a week before and go into full on panic mode. So yes, yeah, so yeah. And for a whole lot of people too.
So many people get a refund, and so there's no point in waiting in delaying just because you can, unless you really, you know, had were severely impacted and could not get around to it. That that's understandable. But for a whole lot of people, it just made sense to file, go ahead, get the refund, and start doing good things with that money. Yep. Okay. So, speaking of taxes and bills, savers are
going to get a new tax bill. Oh yeah, so okay, this is there's good news and bad news, and the bad news isn't really all that bad, right, So the good news is that interest rates on savings accounts, on CDs, on all sorts of savings type products have gone up and up and up, and at the same time, inflation has gone down, down and down, and so it's been really good. Now savers are out of place where they're actually making real returns on any money that they've gotten
savings. If and I stress this, if if they're with the right bank, if they're with the right institution, there's still a whole lot of people, much to my chagrin, banking with the giant banks like Wells Fargo and Bank of America, who are getting paid essentially nothing on their money. And so with inflation running wild, it obviously calmed down a little bit. Right,
it's now in the three point seven range. But if you're paid point zero one percent on your money, you're losing regularly because of what inflation is doing to those dollars that are in savings. But if you make one little move and go to one of my favorite high yield savings accounts with an online bank, you're gonna be able to outpace inflation actually making real returns on your
money. So that's really important to mention. But then the flip side is you are, if you've got a significant chunk of change in savings and you're earning that high yield, which is great, you're gonna owe tax on that and so be on the lookout for a ten ninety nine i MT. That's
what it's called early next year. And if you've got significant amounts of savings you're gonna have, you're gonna hundreds, maybe even depending on how much you have maybe even an extra grand or two in taxes to the federal government. But then again, like I said, it's good news because you're actually making money. This is more like a success tax than some sort of penalty that you should be upset about. Okay, And just again, you know, you know, I've told you I'm no good with money. So I have
a savings account at one of the big banks. Theoretically, not that I would do that Joel oh Bro, of course not okay, But and I'm really not making any money on it. I'm not gonna have to pay taxes on it. It's only if you like make a bunch of money on the savings that you already have, right right, I mean, so if you have one of these accounts, even if you got one hundred grand in it and you're you're getting the point zero one percent return, Yeah, you didn't
make much money from that account. And so because of that, your ten ninety nine aint is going to be pathetically small. You're not going to owe almost any tax. You're you're not going to notice any difference. But if you're the kind of person going one hundred grand and you had it in one of my favorites, that's making five percent, Yeah, you're gonna get that ten ninety nine aint and you're gonna go oh a few hundred bucks in tax
that maybe you weren't planning on, you weren't expecting. But again, like I said, that's a good thing though. Yeah, you made the money, and so it's worth it's worth paying the tax. It's not really that bad in the scheme of things. It's just something that people need to plan for as rates on those savings accounts have increased as it's gone. Okay, and how do I find a good online bank? Oh, that's a good question. So I've got a few of my favorites that I like to mention
most of the time. I like Ally, I like Discover, and I like c I T and I really like I stress online banks for a reason. It's because the brick and mortars, for the most part, aren't paying as well. You might find a deal, one off deal at a local credit union. I love credit union. So if your credit union is offering something that's competitive in the marketplace when it comes to savings, usually they're better
at loan type products, then definitely it's worth considering that. But if you go with one of those online savings accounts like ally c I T or Discover, and you can actually find a list of the highest paying best savings accounts out there on a site called doctor of Credit dot com Doctor of Credit dot com, And so that's a really good place to turn if you're looking to find kind of Okay, who's got the absolute best rate? I've got a
lot of money to stock away. And some of these banks will even offer like a special onus if you open an account with them, So not only are they paying a much high rate, but you might get a couple of hundred bucks for moving over your savings too, So it's definitely worth looking into. Okay, I've got my work cut out for a doctor credit dot com. Joel lars Guard, thank you so much. I mean I hadn't even
thought about that. So this is good to at least get us thinking about how we're going to make money off of our money that's just sitting there right Oh man? Yeah, well, and you know the savings Wait, wait, people are getting hammered for years and years and years, and finally savers are not getting you know, bent over a barrel. So I'm glad to
see that savers aren't getting smacked around these days. I love that. Okay, how to Money you can find out more great stuff about money and how you can keep more of your money with How the Money with Joel lars Guard noon to two. When is that Saturday? No, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. I'm getting my days all mixed up. Sundays noon to two. Right here on KFI. You can also follow Joel at how to Money. Joel, Thank you so much, Joel. Yeah, thank you. Amy.
All right, touch you next week. Okay, let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A body has been found in a burned RV in Sun Valley. The fire was reported around nine last night. A woman who was inside the RV ran away and was treated by paramedics for burns and smoke annhialation. Pasadena police say they expect an increase in retail theft because of La County's near new zero bail policy.
The police department is preparing for the possible increase by carrying out a retail sting operation more often. Pasadena Police Lieutenant Monica Quaar says the operation works by having detectives poses shoppers at different stores. We know what stores are getting hit the most, you know, so it last time it was Macy's. Macy's was getting hit every week, every day. The stings will now happen every

Lebron says he's dedicating his own season with the Lakers to his son right now. We hear a lot of bad things about kids these days, so I wanted to share a story about a young woman who is making a difference. She's helping students, and I would venture to say she's making the world a better place. It's Hannah Karnick.
She's a recent graduate of Sage Oak Charter High School. Hannah's family has been taking in foster kids over the years, and that's given her some perspective and insight and maybe even compassion for others, which led her to starting up a charity called Hannah's Helpful Hands. So I'd like to say, welcome to Hannah. Please tell us about your charity. Basically, what it does is it works with students to provide them basic necessities like shirts and backpack x and socks
and from toilet tree bags and hygiene bags. So it's a free closet inside of elementary schools and so students can discreetly get these items so that you know they can have them. And it started by me having fifteen foster siblings. And wait wait fifteen foster siblings. Yeah, that's so like all at the same time or over a period of years. How did that all come together? That was over a period of time. Okay, so over over my
whole seventeen years of life. Yeah, I've had fifteen foster siblings. Wow. So I would imagine that there would be some challenges along the way with that. And so you saw that there was a need for kids and said I'm going to do something about it. Yeah, yeah, basically I love that and the program. You've been doing it since seventh or eighth grade. You recently graduated, so what first six years? Yeah? Yeah, for sixty years, and it's been going on super strong so far. I've expanded
to twelve different schools. So it started in my former elementary school and now it's at twelve different schools. That's so great. And are all the schools in Anaheim or where are they? Most of them are. They're in like Orange County, so they're kind of scattered, but most of them are in
Anaheim. Yeah, okay. And all of that wonderful work that you have done got someone's attention, and you recently were awarded the eighteen under eighteen Award by the National Society of High School Scholars So tell us about that and how excited were we to win that. I was so excited to win that. You know, like college is very expensive, and so winning news types of scholarships has been like and winning this scholarship has been such a such a blessing
for me. And because of that scholarship, like I don't have to work as much in school, so that school is cheaper and now I can focus more on my studies and gaining more skills to learn how to better help these kids and to work more with the schools and with the students. Okay, so you are working and you're going to school. Where are you going to school now? I go to Biola University. Good for you. That's amazing. So you're doing it, and then you're also working with your Helpful Hands
charity and making sure that that continues. Yeah, yeah, so it's still I went to school. Biola is near Anaheims, so it's not that far away, so I can still keep my charity going. But the cool thing is is that I have had more people help me recently, so I've been able to take a few steps back and that's been super awesome the way that people have also been helping. That's great because at some point you need to move on, focus on you and take care of you so you can go
change the world even more. If people want to donate Hannah, is there a way for them to do that? Yes, you can actually just go to Hannah's Helpful Hands dot com and it'll take you right right to the donate page. Okay, and what are you studying. I'm studying communications. Oh good, girl. Oh, you're gonna come take my job one day? Yes? Perfect. I think you're really good at your job, so you
can keep it. Hannah Karnick, thank you so much. I'm so proud of you, and I hope you hear that a lot for the rest of your life, because, like I said, not all kids are doing great things, and you, my dear, are doing great things. Oh, thank you so much, Hannah Karnick. If you'd like to donate to Hannah's Helpful Hands. What a cool program. Just it's very easy Hannah's Helpful Hands dot com. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the
KFI twenty four hour newsroom. Two of the counts carry a maximum sentence of up to ten

But this is a cool thing for anybody who likes Disney, and we're getting more information about Disney's expansion plans. It's called their Disneyland Forward Project. There's a seventeen thousand page environmental impact report and it shows gives a little sneak peek into what they're planning. And it's a theme park with
sixteen rides and an outdoor show. So it sounds like, if I'm reading this right, that it's a whole separate theme park on the downtown Disney and Lelo and Stitch parking lots, and it'll be kind of woven between the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel. But it's expected to have outdoor thrill rides like Big Thunder Mountain and in credit coaster, indoors rail rides like Star Wars, Rise of the Resistance and Space Mountain, plus the Circle rides they call them,
which would be like Dumbo. And then they talk about having an outdoor show which would be similar to World of Color and Fantasmic, So this would be it sounds like a smaller park. Disneyland has forty rides and attraction California Adventure has twenty five about rides
