Episode description

Join Henry and his long-time co-host Russell Hanby for 'What's Making News?' of 2021. Join Henry and Russell as they talk about what made news this week in Melbourne, Australia.

THE AGE: (13/05/21): Rich nations urged to give a billion vaccines globally – Henry

High income countries must donate a billion coronavirus vaccines to the rest of the world before new virus variants develop, potentially rendering them less effective, the World Health Organisation has warned.

THE HERALD SUN: (13/05/21):  Vaccines from SA possible in a year – Russell

Much-needed vaccines to better protect Australians from COVID-19 could be developed in South Australia. A locally advanced manufacturing facility in Thebarton, in Adelaide’s inner west, has the capacity to mass produce the mRNA vaccines within 12 months.

THE HERALD SUN: (13/05/21):  Huge setback to overseas travel – Henry

QANTAS has pushed back its start date for international flights and is pinning its hopes on travel bubbles beyond the arrangement in place with New Zealand.

THE AGE: (13/05/21):  Disney animation – how sweet it is– Russell

There are hundreds of beautiful, historic and priceless pieces of art in the exhibition, Disney: The Magic of Animation, at ACMI. But it’s a confection made from confectionary that really takes the cake.

THE AGE: (13/05/21): ODD SPOT – Russell

A gregarious golden retriever- black Labrador cross that wasn’t cut out for guide dog school has established itself as a star fuel-detecting dog. Sheldon’s handler, Texan firefighter John Tadlock, said the playful pooch “flunked out” of guide dog school but now has a good nose for solving arson cases. Sheldon and his handler can identify fuel and other accelerants at fire sites. Labrador retrievers are often chosen for the job because of their keen sense of smell.

This conversation was originally broadcast on 3SER's 97.7FM Casey Radio in May 2021. It was produced by Rob Kelly.
