Metabolic acidosis occurs when the body produces too much acid or the kidneys can't remove enough acid. It can be caused by a number of conditions, including:
- DiabetesWhen blood sugar levels are high and the body produces acidic ketone bodies. This is more common in people with type 1 diabetes.
- Kidney diseaseWhen the kidneys can't filter blood properly. This can include kidney stones, chronic kidney problems, or kidney failure.
- Lactic acidosisWhen the body produces too much lactic acid, which can happen during intense exercise, heart failure, or sepsis.
- DiarrheaWhen the body loses too much sodium bicarbonate, which can be caused by severe diarrhea or taking too many laxatives.
- DehydrationWhen the body is severely dehydrated.
