Hey, it's Michael here and I just wanted to thank you for your support by listening and participating in our live community calls. If you want more Unmute, including direct education like Braille and Jaws, check out club Unmute at Unmute show. This has been an ACB community call. Today's community Unmuted was hosted on Tuesday, October 17, 2024.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Unmute's announcements here at the top. First, we will take all first questions, and if we have time for second, then we'll take second questions. Please try to answer the question of the day if you would like, and one tech question. And if we have time, we'll come back around to you. Also, please be respectful. Give everyone that same respect you would like to get your question answered. Let's see the question of the day today is, first of all, happy white cane day to everybody. And with that being said, what is your favorite navigation app? Or how do you get around? What piece of technology do you like to use when you're out and about navigating? So that would be the tech question of the day. And if you want to find out what we got going on, you can check out our website, unmute show. If you have questions, comments, or anything like that, you can email us at feedback Unmute show. And as a reminder, don't forget that unmute will be coming the first Saturday of the month starting in November. So look for us in, uh, the first Saturday of November, which is in about two ish weeks from now. And you can check the daily community email for all of those details. And with me, as always, I got Michael Babcock. How you doing, Michael?

I am doing good, Marty. And yourself? Doing good. Thank you very much. Good. Michael D, how are you?

I'm doing great. Thank you guys for having me. As usual. I wanted to let folks know that right hot off the press, there was a new iPad mini announced today. A 17. It's either the a 17 or a 17 pro chip with Apple intelligence. The Apple pencil Pro just came out today, so that's exciting. I've also put up a new website, beyondthegallery app where you can find different shortcuts to use in the shortcuts app on your phone. So all pretty exciting stuff. So I will give it back to you guys.

Very good. I'm glad to hear that beyond the gallery is up and running and that people can go explore the power of shortcuts. What I think a lot of people sometimes forget about, and I'm guilty of this myself, is that shortcuts will also run on the MACD, so something worth playing with. So thanks a lot michael. Yes, or Sunday we posted digitalbytes where we're tackling several things on iOS 18, including sending your messages later. Chris sent us a message a little bit later than when she recorded it. I show you how to customize your home screen and put apps wherever you want them. And Marty also shows you how to activate your notification. So that's on Sunday's digital bytes. And then on Friday, customizing jaws with dictionary manager if you want to customize the way that jaws pronounces some things, or in the example that I gave on Friday, if every link on a webpage starts with missed call from caller plus one, and you don't want to have to hear missed call from caller plus one and just hear a little tone to let you know that that's what it says or nothing. Check out that dictionary episode to get the content and details. On Thursday, Lucy shared with you how to learn to play an instrument with your lady a device. And then of course we had the community unmuted on the 8 October. So with that, Sheila, do we have any hands? Today we do.

Gregory. Hey guys. Hello. I use my Victor eater track to navigate most of the time, so that's what I usually use. Hopefully it'll last till was it supposed to be? They're supposed to keep it going till 2030. Is that what they claim? I hope.

I got a question about I have a pop up on my every time I start my PC I have a pop up that comes with the Windows team all the time. I can't get rid of it. I mean I can insert b and then alt f but where can I find it? Just stop that coming up on my desktop every time I turn on my computer. So have you went into by chance? And this is where I would check just to make sure and I can search for sure. But if you go into the teams application and then you go into the settings under general or startup, should be an option to disable the teams from starting up. Okay, just go ahead and look for the app on the application on the PC, right, not the window that's popping up.

I can't navigate that thing for some reason.

Okay, I'll go into the application and look for it. Yep. The other thing you can do there, Gregory, is if you go to the task manager with control Alt delete, you should be able to manage what apps start up. And what you would do is you would find the startup link, press entertainment on that and then that'll give you a list of the apps that are currently set up to start with your computer. Arrow down to teams and then the keystroke is Alt D or tab over to disable to disable teams from starting up as well. Thanks, buddy, I appreciate it. No worries. Who do we got next?

Sheila Nolan. Hey, Nolan. Hello everyone. Happy white cane. Happy white cane day to everyone. And I use a combination of having. My cane to get around and my meta ray ban smart glasses and sighted assistance from a couple of friends when. I go to public places with them to help me get around. Very good. Appreciate that. Yes, I am going to light the. Voice messaging feature within WhatsApp being used with the metaray band smart glasses because I am going to look at testing.

That out this week with a friend. Of mine and then I'm going to report back to you guys next week on this because this is going to be fun. Good. You'll have to let us know how that goes there, Nolan, and appreciate your input. Thanks a lot. You are so welcome and have a blessed and wonderful day, everyone. You as well. Who do we got next? Sheila? Jeff. Hey Jeff. Hey Jeff. Guys, so I use a windows eleven PC. Can you possibly share the best or. Maybe most efficient way to, I guess.

Load a PDF into some type of AI to help me so I can ask whatever AI, I'm assuming it's copilot, but maybe not. Like how I can ask the AI.

Questions about the PDF so I can tell you how I would do it. I'd be interested if Michael D or Marty has an alternative way, but what I typically do is I go to the chat GPT.com or chat dot OpenAI.com and then if you shift tab once from that edit field you should get a attach file button and if you hit enter on that, that'll pop open a menu that you can pick from a cloud service or you can pick from your computer, press enter on that and then locate the file on your computer. Michael, do you have an alternative solution?

That's how I would do it. I have not used copilot because I don't really use too much windows and can't use that on my work PC. So I would use the chat GPT approach. That way you could do it anywhere, anytime. I was going to suggest be my eyes is now on Windows I believe, correct? Yeah, but I don't know if you can drop PDF's in to be my eyes. I haven't tried that. Might be a good thing to try and see if that works because you're supposed to be able to identify images, things like that.

Right? You can send images and that would be a pretty convenient way as well. And then the last thing is, Jeff, are you a Jaws user? Yes. So Jaws key space and I don't know. Yeah, I think honestly your easiest would be to use the chat GPT website. I don't know if Picturesmart will work on PDF files. If it will, you could try jaws key space p and then f if.

You'Re just wanting the OCR. I don't know the keystroke for this, but there's convenient OCR and Jaws as well. Yeah, I use that one quite a bit, but I was hoping, you know, to like one specific PDF. It's like really big, and I just have a few specific questions for it.

So, yeah, I would drop that into chat GPT and then if you. The nice thing about that is if you need to go back to it, you can use your heading navigation on the chat GPT website. Find the heading that corresponds with the day that you uploaded that audio, and then down arrow from there, and you can hit enter on the link that relates to that conversation and then go back and ask questions about it without having to re upload it.

Another thing you can do, anybody can do this. Well, I think you have to be on the page chat GPT to do this, but if you have that, you could create your own GPT with that PDF, if it's something you reference a lot, and then you could just go back and create a new conversation with that GPT as well. Okay, thanks, guys.

And one quick thing. Michael Doyce, if you are still thinking about it, would really look forward to you doing a review or whatever, how to, if you will, of the new passwords app in iOS 18. Thanks, guys. Oh, for sure. Thanks a lot. Who do we got next? Sheila? Lori. Hey, Lori. Hi, guys. So how are you guys doing? Great, thank you.

Okay, so my tech question has to do with a program that I listen to on Amazon music, which is called. Oh, God, I had to forget what the name of it is. Anyway, the podcast was talking about a new thing with Amazon Alexa, and that is let's chat. And if I ask my a to let's chat. The program talked about the way you can change her voice from what it came as to a brand new voice that is clearer. And I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but that's the way I heard it. So how do I, I didn't really pay attention to how it described the steps to do this. But I, how do I change my lady a lady a voice to go to this new voice? Because the new voice I really like, it's stronger, it's clear. She enunciates. And I said she because it's the only female, only gender voice right now that's available. So how do I change it on my lady a. So that I hear this voice all the time?

You don't. Unfortunately, the content that you are we're listening to is out of date. As of about July, Amazon took the let's chat feature away from the lady A. And never fully rolled that out. That doesn't mean that there won't be a change to the voice quality in the near future. But that's why it's not working as you expect. You can always say, change your voice and see if any of the other voices work well for you.

Yeah, because I like some of the other voices that are there now, and especially the male voices. So. And also there's a british voice that I've fallen in love with, and it's a female voice, but I like the male voices better for some reason. I don't know why, but I just do. Especially one that sounds like NVDA. It's an australian accent voice. And he enunciates really clear. So I'm hoping that someday Amazon will bring back the chat let's chat feature because if there's some way that I can tell her change your voice and it goes directly to that, I'll be happy.

There you go, Lori. Well, that's why it's not working for you and appreciate you jumping in here. Sheila, who do we got next? Thanks a lot, guys. Go ahead. Sheila, who do we got next? Pam. Coffee. Hey, Pam. Hey, Pamdan.

Hello. My apps of choice when I'm out and about now say apps floral because it sort of depends on what I'm doing. I sometimes use voice vista, which if anyone isn't familiar with that. When Microsoft soundscape, the original Microsoft soundscape, went the way of the dodo bird or dinosaur or whatever, this was one of the new offspring, I guess, if you will, of that. And so I use that some sometimes. If I need kind of sighted assistance, if you will, I will use either be my eyes or Ira. Now my question is, I know there is a new, fairly new app called, oh, shucks. Called soundscape, but it's new, it's not the original version that went out of, out of existence. Have you ever used it? And if you have, is it as good or better than or not as good as voice vistas.

So I was given the answer to a con I haven't used up in there. I have not actually used it. I am a voice Vista user. I love voice vista. It is amazing. Especially. It is amazing, especially combined with the ray bans because then leaves your ears open and you can hear the different locations or the intersections you're coming up to on your left in front of you or on your right. And it is beautiful. I have not new soundscape, Michael. Have you?

I think the only other one I know is the soundscape community that came out. I have not. From what I'm understanding, it is the closest to the original user interface for soundscapes. But I think that more development has gone into the voice vista application from my, from my understanding.

Gotcha. So, you know, usually it's just me and my cane and if need be one of those apps. Unless I am going with a friend and do side head guide or, or we walk side by side with a cane or me using a cane. So that's my story and I am sticking to it. Well, thank you. About to go outside and enjoy the weather, if it isn't too cold. Well, enjoy that weather and. Oh, I will. Thanks, Bobby. Hey, Bobby. Bobby, you're still muted. Hello, guys. Hello. I just want to share some very.

Very interesting news for you. There's been an app for Windows, I don't know if anybody knew about it. I was listening to some of Jonathan's old archives and I was looking for years for a really good podcast client. Because qcast gave me problems.

And, you know, it didn't have. I didn't have a license key for it. And, you know, Christopher and. What's the other guy's name? Tyler Spivey. Haven't really updated. They don't seem to update it anymore. So this new app that I found that Jonathan Mosen was talking about is called Grover, Grover podcast. And it is a really, really good app. It's very, very accessible for Windows. And also, I just want to say if Debbie's in here, I'd be very, very happy to help her uninstall Microsoft wallet. Because when you first install Windows eleven or Windows ten, I mean, back in the Windows eight days, it never, ever came with Microsoft Wallethood. Well, eight used to, but ten never did. So when you go from ten and up, Microsoft Wallet just doesn't exist in the install phase in the beginning. So, yeah, check out Grover podcast. It's in the Microsoft app store.

I will have to check that out because I have been asked a couple of times for a good podcast app on Windows, and that's not how I listen to podcasts, so I struggle with being able to provide an answer. So I will check out Grover in the Microsoft app store, and then I'll also search living blindfold information about it. So thank you, but I appreciate that. I don't know if living blindly is even still up because I know Jonathan took it down.

The website is still. Well, I believe it is, but I know he stopped publishing the podcast. But he mentioned it. He mentioned. Just to let you know, I don't know if it would be on living blindfolding. He mentioned it on the mozin explosion. Yep. Perfect. Well, thank you for letting us know about that, Bobby. Appreciate it. You're welcome, Brad. Who do we have in club health? Another guy named Jeff. Jeff? Go ahead, Jeff. Yeah.

Good afternoon, everyone. I just have some information here. Can you hear me? Yep, we can. Okay, great. Has some information for Jeff's question in reference to PDF. You can definitely ask questions of jaws. Picture smart about the PDF we have. I won't name names here, but we have a situation here where one of our colleagues here at the university utilized this feature to be able to get information about a PDF that contained lots. Of images of map data. And she was able to interrogate and.

Ask questions of the map and get specific information. So it is possible, but your mileage. Is going to vary based on the quality of the PDF, how well the AI can interpret the PDF. There's lots and lots of variables here. So we can give you some direction. On exactly what you can and cannot.

Do, but your mileage will be determined based on what the artificial intelligence can actually, you know, gleam from the actual files themselves. As for voice Vista, I've been monitoring both soundscape community and voice VIsTA very almost religiously, actually. And I will tell you that, hands down, voice Vista is by far leaps. And bounds ahead of where soundscape community is. And I don't think, I mean, unless.

There'S something that happens in a major way, I don't think there's any need for anyone to be looking at that product, at least in the near term. Soundscape continues. Excuse me. Voice Vista continues to innovate and add features almost weekly in the product, and it's pretty incredible.

It's an amazing tool. If you've not used it, it's just incredibly great. So just wanted to offer those pieces of advice, and I feel like it's getting more accurate too. That could just be me, but I really like that app. So thanks, Jeff. Appreciate it. Yeah, they keep tweaking the algorithm for. Determining how close you are to intersections. And how announcements of streets are handled and address numbers. And they're listening to the community a. Lot and fine tuning the algorithm so.

They'Re very, very responsive to feedback. It's very good. Beautiful. Thanks a lot, Jeff. Sheila, who do we got next? Christine. Hello, Christine. Hey. Am I unmuted? Yes, you are. Okay, good, because I have two ways to do that. Even before the iOS 18 update, I wanted screen recognition to be on my. Rotor because there are a couple of. Apps that it really. That it has assists in. So I went in and did the rotor edition, checked it, but it does not show up. I go in several times now.

I've gone in. And then when I updated to iOS 18, I thought, gee, maybe that will help. Maybe that will make it show up. And voice screen recognition is never on. The road, or my partner is having the same problem. We go in, we put it there. It's not there. I can put in and take out. Anything else I want, but not that. And I wondered if you knew what that might be about or if you. Know any problem that. That has.

I have encountered this issue myself. So it's not just something you and your partner are doing, which I'm sure you've already presumed. I have, and I haven't tried it in iOS 18, but what you could try doing is moving it around in the rotor and sometimes then it pops up. The other option that you have is if you haven't yet, you can go to accessibility and go down to per app settings, and then for those specific apps, turn screen recognition on. Okay.

And then that free as well. So hopefully that helps. Yeah, that's great. Awesome. Thanks. No problem. Who do we got next? Sheila Stacey. Hey, Stacy.

Okay, my question is, I've been looking for a way that I can. You know, I was thinking about getting the wearable glasses, the ray ban smart glasses, but I understand you still have to take a picture with them to see what's around you. I'm not sure about that, but I. I've been wanting to have a way that you could just wear something and have it scan its environment automatically for you, where you don't have to take pictures all the time and you don't have to worry about the camera. Could just scan the environment and tell you what's there. I don't know. Does that do that?

So, currently the Ray bans don't. And I'll see. I'll stop talking in a second, see if Michael has any suggestions. I believe the ARX 1.5 headset will do something similar and that will work with your blind shell, whereas the ray bans currently will not work with the blind shell. Michael, do you have a suggestion or thought that's correct? Yeah.

The Ray bands will not work with the blind shell and they do not do video recording yet or video processing yet. They have stated that at the meta event that meta connect, that they will do that, but they have not added that as of this time. But it is. They worked with be my eyes and they worked with Ira, but they do do that.

But it's call based, so it's not using the AI. But they do have, they are working with be my eyes and they work with Ira through WhatsApp. So it's a little bit more complicated to get set up, but they do offer a lot of features and for the, for the price, it's, you know, really good. I think it's a. Little skin in ways I want it to. I believe ARX 1.5 will do. Yeah, I think the ARX would be the best.

Arx Alpha Romeo x ray. It's a headset that uses a cable that plugs into the bottom of your phone and then it has a camera on the right side of them. And I believe it will do live interpretation of scenes and text. You'd want to check with them, but search for Arx, that's Alpha Romeo x Ray headset and you can get more details about it. Okay, Stacey, but the phone has to be hooked into. Yes, ma'am. Yep. It runs off of the phone. It runs off.

Yep. It connects to your phone and uses your phone to process it. So. Oh, does the phone have to be put in a certain way, pointed in certain ways? No, because it uses the headset on your head. It doesn't use your phone's camera, but it uses the phone to process the data that it receives. Oh, okay. But it doesn't use the phone's camera.

Correct. It uses the headset camera, which again, would be placed along the right side of your head. No worries, Stacey. Sheila, who do we got next there? Hey, eg, how are you? It's been. I just wanted to comment on the. Lady a dropping the chat function. And I'm guessing this again, just speculation on my part, that it may have. To do with the fact that Amazon bought anthropic and perceived, which are both. AI companies, and they're talking about coming. Out with a premium version of Lady.

A, which would have AI involved in it. So they may have wanted to pull. Back, quote, unquote, the chat function so. That they can come back with it later on.

This new version of Lady A. Yeah, I suspect that has a lot to do with it. And I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but, but there for a little while, lady a was, was very frustrating and annoying. But I have actually found it answering more questions than it has ever answered in the past. Just random questions about things. So I hesitate to say that maybe it is getting a little smarter and we'll see where things go.

Um, I can tell you that. So I, I put on a book every night before sleep, uh, that I listened to during, during the night. And there is new language when you start, when I start a book, uh, that lady a uses that did not used to be there and it happened about a week or so ago. So I'm wondering if that's kind of the start of the implementation of that. I mean, I'm sure there's other, you know, signs that's happening, but there's something I've noticed.

Thank you very much, eg. Sheila, who do we got next? Lynn. Helen. Hi, how are you? Good, how are you? Good, good, thanks.

So if I'm out, I usually like to use nearby Explorer because it's still working for us for now. I know that it's going out, though. So I need to find a different app because I'm often lost. I mean, not often, but enough that I want to know where I'm at. So that's the answer to that question. And then my other question. So I don't know a whole lot about this particular thing, but I have, so I have a keyboard, as in a music keyboard that has a manual and I'm trying to read it. It's a, it's a PDF and it says it secured when I load it. And so then eventually it'll come up and say this product isn't ready to be for something about, isn't ready for screen reader reading or something. And then it'll tell me cancel or continue. So then I continue and I can't figure out then what it's doing or what to do from there or, you know, it tells me I can change my settings. Do you have any idea what may be going on with that?

I do, because I just ran into this with a client. So if I'm understanding what's going on, you're running into two different issues. One, when you open the PDF, it's telling you that it's secured. And then number two, after a couple of moments, it tells you that this PDF is not optimized for use with the screen reader and asks you to continue processing it. Is that correct? Yeah, I think so. And I'm on a PC right now, although I could be on a Mac. I have one as well.

Beautiful. So here's what you need to do. First of all, thank you for using Adobe Acrobat reader. Sometimes I wish more people would because I put it off for years and then I started using it, and it's not a bad experience. So if you go into the settings of Adobe and then you go down to security, there's an option to disable more secure mode, I believe is what it's called. If you can't find it, call Freedom Scientific's tech support and they will guide you right to the setting. It is one of those obscure settings you might not think about, but once you disable that setting, then the Adobe acrobat reader becomes responsive to Jaws. After jaws processes OCR on that PDF, OCR means.

So I do this right? So I do this app before I go into the, into the document itself, go into the settings.

So what I did is I opened the document and then I called full transparency. I opened the document, I called freedom scientific, and I said, hey, something weird is going on here. I can read this document on one laptop, but I can't read it on this office computer. And Freedom scientific told me to go into the settings and then to go down to security and disable the more secure mode, I think it is called, or something similar. So how do I get into settings? Because it's very silent once.

So you would press alt f to go up to the file menu and then go down to. It's either in the file menu or the tools menu. The other thing that I recommend is go to ACV Media and type in Adobe in the search acb media.org. and Ron did a great tutorial on showing you some settings to change in Adobe to make it more accessible with Jaws. Okay. So go to ACB and search for. Adobe acb media.org dot or. Yeah, yeah. Yep. Okay. Okay. Okay. Thank you so much. This has been very helpful. Thank you.

You're welcome. All right. Deborah Jackson. Hello, Deborah. Hi. I have a question about my apple watch. I noticed, like when I go to get on my treadmills and my walk in, you know, those are acrid exercise. But when I seen that I did like 2000 steps and whatever, well, I felt it was cheating because I'm in the Uber going in and coming home. So how can I get the exact, you know, measurement of my walk without it cheating with the being in the cardinal.

But shouldn't be counting your steps when you're in the car. So I'm not sure why. Would you ever look and see what the number is when you get in the car before you start driving? And by the time you get to your destination, did the number go up? Yes, they did. Wow. Because I would check it after I exercise and then come home, and then it's like, wait a minute, that's not accurate. That sounds more like a bug. Really? How do you check it? Huh?

How do you check it? Are you checking it on your phone? It has it on my phone. And. Yeah, because I use it. But they call step app. Yes. Okay. I think I know what's going on. Go ahead, Michael.

So if you have an app on your phone and on your watch, you may be getting double the data because your phone's accelerometer is tracking your steps and your watch is tracking your steps. And so the phone is not as accurate as the watch is. And so it may be giving you false data based on having more than one app. If you have the Apple watch, the activity or fitness or whatever the app is called now, we'll track that for you as long as you're wearing your watch and you don't need an additional app to do that. I don't have any now. I mean, the other app that I've used is pedometer plus plus. And it works pretty well. But you really just need what's on your watch to track your steps if you're already wearing your watch. So you might be able to just not need the app on your phone as well. And you can check, I think it's. Is it the fitness app or activity on your phone? And you can see all the data from your watch as well. And the health app should have it as well.

The health. The health app that's Apple provided, is that the one you're talking about? Well, there's an app on the phone. I believe it's fitness. Fitness, yep. Fitness. Yeah. There's a fitness and a health app. So there's the both of them. But fitness has provided. Yes. And fitness has all that stuff from your watch right on your phone. So you don't have to go into the health app where there's so much more data. You could just look right in the fitness app.

Okay, I will bring that up and then see. Yeah, I, you know, that that's like, you know, peed to me. Like, I really did the work. Yeah. For for sure. Deborah, thanks. Thanks for that. Yep. Check out the fitness app. And if you are just listening without raising your hand, Marty will tell you here in a second what the question is, and then we'll move on. Marty.

Yeah. So today is White Cane day. So happy white cane day to everyone. And the question is, what do you use for navigation when you're out and about? Do you have an app or a gadget? So let us know if you'd like. Who do we got next? Sheila. Don't have any new hands, so let's go to Gregory. Hello, Gregory. At the top of the podcast, I think it was, Michael mentioned some information about shortcuts. A new podcast. What was that?

So I mentioned a webpage. It's not a podcast yet. It might be. It's a website called beyond the Gallery. So the shortcuts app has a section that's called the Gallery. And so I created a website called beyond the gallery where you can submit your own shortcuts after you create an account and other people can download your shortcuts and leave comments about them. Basically, it's a community website to share shortcuts. It's an accessibility website, but it's for everybody. So beyond guidance on there at all.

Like maybe someone starting out to use. Not yet, but that is coming. And there's forums, so you can ask questions there as well. Thank you. Beyond the gallery app. Thank you. Now we got some new hands. Donna. Hey, Donna.

Hello. I have a question about text messages. I have an iPhone se, third generation, and I have, you know, the text message, the conversations. Someone sent me a voice memo. Is there any way you can delete, like, just the individual, like, I'd like to delete that voice memo and keep the conversation. Like, I'm not seeing anywhere to do that. Is there any. Any hope for that? Or is that not possible?

So you have two actions that you could do. I believe if you triple tap on the voice message, this will then select it, and then you can delete the message. So tap on your phone three times fairly quickly. This will put your messages into an edit mode, and then that bottom message will be selected. And then along the bottom, you'll have forward and delete. You can go ahead and then tap on delete, delete. And that'll remove that voice message. Also, if you go into settings and then you go to messages, you can go down to voice messages, I believe it says. And then under there, there's an option that might, say, retain messages forever. You can actually change that to retain message for a certain period of time after you play it.

And if the tapping sounds difficult when you're in the body of the message, where the voice memo is or any graphic or anything like that, if you go to the top, there'll be an edit button, which you can do a single finger double tap on. And that will also put it into edit mode.

Yeah. When I'm editing, though, like, it wants to delete that. Like, this is in the middle of a conversation. So like, there's all these text messages and then there's this one voice memo in the conversation. So is that how you, I mean, can you do, is that going to just delete that one message? If I do that, if you triple.

Tap on that message itself, that voice message, then that should say that it is selected, and then there should be a delete button at the bottom. And that will only delete that message, not the entire message thread. Right. Now, can you do that with the messages too, and the message? Now only you want to maybe keep the latest message that somebody sent you, but you don't necessarily want to keep the whole. Or is it, or is it just with the conversation? You have to delete the whole conversation.

So if you open messages and you're in a list of your conversations, not the conversation itself, where the compose button is at the top and you find the edit button, if you tap that and then you tap someone's conversation, that will delete that entire conversation thread. Right. However you open that message thread. So let's say you and I are texting and you tap on Michael, and it reads the most recent message, and then you tap on that. Then it has the edit field at the bottom of your screen where you can reply. And then in there, if you double tap and hold on any of the messages that are between you and I, you can either delete one message or go through and select multiple messages by double tapping on it, and then delete all of those messages. So if we had ten messages and you only want to keep the most recent message, you can go select all nine of the previous messages and then delete them. And then you'll have my message thread I with just the most recent message between us.

Okay. Thank you so much. Oh, my goodness. Thank you. No worries. Hope that helps. And if you have any other questions, feel free to come on back. Sheila, who do we thank you. Nora. Hey, Nora. Hey. Hey. Good morning. I'll answer a question. I do. I do use my, when I'm out on the belt, I use my cell phone, make a call or check my emails. And things like that. Good. That's good. That's pretty much what I do. I have my cane with me. Beautiful. Well, thanks, Nora. Appreciate it.

You're welcome. Thank you. Of course, Sheila. Who do we got next?

That'd be, I think, 919 ending in 651. Yes, ma'am. That's me. I hope this hasn't been answered before, but if so, I apologize. I am trying to learn the iPhone, but I'm still using the blind shell classic two phone, and the only major problem I have with it is when I'm on a website and they want to send me a code, I can go back and get the code, but then I can't get back to the website to finish filling it in, and I just have to go back and start over and, you know, going around in circles, and I tried for an hour, and I couldn't get anything. I tried to work.

You have to use the app switcher so you don't essentially close the browser. You leave it open, go to mail, and then come back, and it will stay where you have it on the website. So you don't have to. I don't have. I mean, I don't know if I have. What phone do you have? What kind of phone? Okay. I have a book. Okay. I have the blind shell closet, too. Yep. So. Which is by, I don't know, out of some foreign country. I. Can you say you were. Okay, go ahead, Michael.

Yeah. So if I'm understanding correctly, where you're running to, an issue is you have an iPhone, which I think through threw us off a little bit because I want to make sure we're answering this correctly. But you also have a blind shell. Are you trying to get the code to sign into something on the blind shell from your iPhone or from your blind shell?

No, no, no. I'm totally. I am trying to learn the iPhone, but I'm a touch typist, and I've been, you know, that's been over 65 years ago, you know what I mean? So it's real hard for me to touch and swipe on something that's flat. Okay. So I'm trying to transition to the iPhone, but I'm not using it for anything much except to link to smart devices and such.

So let me ask you one more question, because I think I have an easy solution for you. Is, is this two factor authentication or verification code being sent to your blind shell as a text message or being sent to your blind as an email? Beautiful. Okay.

So what you do when you are asked for the code you press that top left button, the button above. Okay. This is your info button, right? Press ok twice. Once we'll open the notifications. The second time will open the message that has that verification code in it. When you get that message, it's going to read it to you and it might read a little fast, so you'll need to remember it. If you need to repeat. Okay.

Press the top right button above the back button and that'll repeat. Or if you press and hold it, it will spell it, which therefore will read the number a lot of slower. So if you need that, press and hold that top right button. When you have the code committed to memory or written down somewhere, tap the back button three times, the slanted line, press it three times, and that'll put you right back in the web browser. And then you can press your down button to get to the edit field, press okay and then enter the code as it was sent to you.

Right. Because, yeah, that's such a great feature. But when I can't get it to work, certainly. Good, Michael. I will try it. And thank you so much. I hope that will help somebody else, too. Are you trying to enter the code on your blind shell or enter the code on your iPhone? Yes. No, I'm trying to enter it on the blind shell because I don't, I can't swipe and tap and all that on the phone. Oh, gotcha. Okay, so this was, I mean, I'm still learning.

I mean, I've got it update and I can do a few things on Siri, and I have a problem. You know, I was confused because you mentioned the iPhone, so I was. I guess I'm trying to learn it before I transition to it. I know at some point I'll have to, especially things turn out like I hope they won't, but I'm trying to gravitate to it. Thanks, y'all. Of course. We appreciate it. Sheila, who do we got next there? Janet? Hello, Janet.

Good morning, everybody. I wanted to mention that I did not know this until I did it a while back. I was texting with a bunch of people in an SMS, and you can actually attach songs and other things here, SMS messages that you're playing with. Oh, okay. I see what you're saying. I did not know you could do that. You can attach. Number with a bunch of people, double tapped on it, and it put it in there. Very good. Glad to hear that that worked out well. Thanks.

For sure. My husband uses good maps outdoors, which is to be seeing eye, so. Okay, well, perfect. Thanks, Janet. We appreciate that. Of course. All right, we've got, I think it's Catherine 970 ending in zero, five, seven. That sounds like Catherine, maybe. Hi, this is Estelle, first time I've called in. I have a question about the blind shell. Okay, Estelle.

Okay. I'm wondering if there's some way to navigate through some of these long lists. For instance, sometimes I get an email that's two or 300 of the little pages and I'm wondering if there's a keystroke or something that can help me navigate that. And also when I go to where it says use information in text, sometimes in that it's also two or 300 different things in the list. Is there a way on the blind shell to navigate a little quicker, either going from link to link or going five or ten at a time or something like that?

Thank you. Yep. And that's a great question, Estelle. I'm not sure if you listen to it, you can search for Shell phone show on your favorite podcast app, including the Blind Shell. And there's an eleven minute tutorial on using the email there that might help as well if you forget some of the things. But what I would try doing in your case in the first place is open the email and then press ok. To open the context menu for the email. It'll say reply, hopefully one of nine, I believe is what it is. And then if you go down, instead of going to use information from text, use the open in web browser or open in browser option. And then that will let you switch to. If you press number two, this will let you navigate by headings or number three will let you navigate by links and then pressing your down button will take you to each of those elements that you switch to.

Oh, wonderful. That's very helpful. Thank you very much. I appreciate it, Oprah. Thanks a lot, Sheila. Who do we got? We don't have any new hands and you've got ten minutes. Pam, coffee. Hello, Pam. Okay, this, I think Christine left, but maybe she'll go back and catch the podcast because she was asking about screen recognition. Couldn't get it to show up on her rotor. Yep.

What a lot of people don't realize is that in order to use screen recognition and you first have to enable it, you go into settings, you go to accessibility, you go to voiceover, you go to voiceover recognition. And in there is screen recognition among several other options. And you first have to enable them there because some of them have a little bit of a download and so you have to enable it there and then you go to rotor, add screen recognition to your rotor and it should work. Now in what I have found in iOS 18, the screen recognition, you may have to go through a number of rotor items to get there. It's not always where you think it's going to be on the rotor depending on what you're actually doing. So you sort of have to look for it. But if you've already enabled it, it should show on your rotor. Just go through any number of items on your rotor to find it.

Thank you, Pam. I made an assumption, and I should not have made that assumption, that apple would not allow that to be added to the rotor if it wasn't enabled. But you're right, you should go in and check to make sure that that is enabled under the voiceover recognition. So thank you for bringing that up, Pam, I appreciate it because I do. Have to use that occasionally. Copy that. Thanks a lot, Sheila. Who do we got next? You're welcome, Rich. Hey Rich.

Hey Rich, real quick, the lady was asking the question about the blind shell and all the links in the email. Another thing you can do, sometimes you. Have to use use information from text.

If you're going to go into a zoom call because if you use the opening browser then you got to type in the zoom id number and all that. So if you're going to go into a Zoom call and let's say you're on the ACB schedule, the community schedule, and there might be, you might want to go into link 90 and let's say maybe there's maybe 300 of those page things on the, on the, on the screen or whatever, a quick way to make it jump. Let's say if there's a, if there's. A hundred of those, of those lines.

On the page and you think your. Thing is maybe three quarters of the. Way down, just type in like 70. On your keypad or type in sick, okay. And it'll make it jump, you know, over half the way down. Just take the number of links and then see how far down you want to go and just type it down and that will get you close to the one you want and that way you're not having to go one line at a time.

That was perfect, rich. Thank you for bringing that up. You also might want to try because that's so when I have to load the community email on the blind child, the community schedule, and I open that email in web browser, I can press ok on the name of the event which will then launch the Zoom app. So if you haven't tried that I would play with that because that seems to be working reliably. But I did not realize you could type in, like, 70 or something closer to the end of the list to quickly jump there. So there's multiple ways to accomplish it. Thanks a lot, rich, you all.

Thank you very much. Sheila. Who do we got next? And then we'll wrap it up. Stacy. Hello, Stacey. Hi. I do have a question. I saw a new, brand new Hewlett Packard, never been used for sale in Costco. Now, I'm wondering, if I wanted to buy that thing, how would I get it out for no separates? It's basically sewn for on sale for sighted people. What would I do to get it retrofitted for me? Because I like the keyboard on it.

I'm not certain what the problem is. So it's an HP computer, and you need it configured for you. Is that what you're saying? Right.

So what I would do in that case, Stacy, is number one. You can, I guarantee that you can open that computer up and press control windows enter once it's turned on, and you will have a screen reader talking to you. You can then learn the keystrokes and ways to navigate with narrator. And then it's fully accessible to you out of the box. Otherwise, you can go download jaws or NVDA if you're more comfortable once you have narrator up and running. But that's the quickest and easiest way is to press control Windows entertainment. And if you have problems, you can always reach out to the Microsoft disability answer desk.

Oh, you mean I could even get it to talking right off the bat? Yes. Yep. Once you turn it on, press control windows enter. That will activate narrator in the out of box experience. Control windows enter. Yes, ma'am. Oh, my gosh. Give that a try, Stacey, and hopefully that'll work out for you. Okay. All right. All righty. Sheila, do we have any more hands? You've got one more. Bobby. Hey, Bobby. Hey, Michael. So I forgot to tell you something earlier. I'm not repeating myself. Don't worry.

You were talking about watches. Well, somebody was. An Apple watch, but that's not my situation. I have this atonic talking watch. It's made by five senses. I don't know if you ever heard of that company. I have not.

But, yeah, it's a tonic. And it has a male voice. Now, the thing is, I received it Sunday from Amazon because my old watch broke. Now, this was a deal. It said that the time was not updated. USA time not updated. But I finally got it updated. It took me two days to update it. And the manual says that you have to keep it near a window. Now could that be true?

Yes. Yep. It's because it's an atomic watch. That, that is what I have seen frequently on atomic watches or clocks, is that you need to keep it near a window to allow it to synchronize to the time. How often do you have to do it? Like every day? I don't, I don't know because I don't use them. But if you notice that your time seems to be a little bit off, then you'll know how often you need to do it. All right. Thank you.

Of course, Bobby. Thanks a lot. And with that, Marty, will you go ahead and wrap it up? Thank you, Brad and Sheila, for joining us today. And Michael Doyze. And go ahead, Marty. Yep. Thanks, everyone for being here. We appreciate it. If you want to find out all the things we have going on, check our website at unmute show.
