Club Unmute is a way you can support the work we do here at Unmute. If you're interested in an exclusive opportunity to learn more with us privately and to check out some of the social events we have, check out Unmute show. This has been an ACB community call. Today's Unmute presents community call was hosted on Tuesday, 4 June 2024. Welcome back to Unmute, everyone. A few announcements here at the very top. Want to remind everyone we're going to take all first questions, and if we get through all first questions and we have time, then we'll definitely take second questions. Also, I wanted to remind everyone that we have WWDC coming up on Monday. And so the question of the day is rumors are that they're going to be improving Siri or changing Siri or doing something to Siri. We don't know exactly what yet till Monday, but let's say that if they are going to be making improvements to Siri, I would like to know from you guys, what would you like to see improved, added, taken away? I'd love to hear what you guys feel about Siri and what you think should be improved. And with that, Michael, how's it going? It is going well. I want Siri to work and that's what I want. So we published technically working yesterday. You can get that by searching out technically working club unmute members. Got a replay on Sunday of the mini course slash workshop that Marty is hosting related to publishing your podcast. And it's not all about tech. It's about thinking about what that content is that you want to talk about and how to get that content into something that people actually enjoy listening to. So if you're a club member, check that out in your club dashboard. And then we also published to the public feed digital Bytes, a Google lookout. I described using that on an Android device. Chris shared information about the iOS share sheet, and then Marty shared a anchor three in one wall outlet that would give you flexibility when it comes to your power needs. Friday's Jaws episode did not come out, Chris. Not Chris. Marcy and I are going to get that published for you this coming Friday, so you'll want to check that out for Jaws. And then we chatted or we had the replay of the ACB community as you call last Tuesday. So that's the content review that I have for you today. Sheila, do we have any hands? You do, Matt. Hey, Matt. Hey, Matt, how you doing? Hi. Hey, thanks very much for taking my call. Yeah, I have. I want to check what, what personal experience you guys have for replacing, replacing a Windows laptop with a 12.9 inch iPad? I'm thinking the iPad air, the M two version regarding and using an external monitor like a 24 inch monitor keyboard and using office on iPad. So no idea. I like to go for like free versions, like free office if possible. So a couple things I would say, if you want to have the experience, the best experience with a keyboard, you'll probably want to use the magic keyboard. And if you do a lot of video, you'll probably want the newer iPad air with the, the new iPad air. And the iPad pros have the camera along the long side, so they've moved it now. So what that means is the camera itself. If you have your iPad in landscape mode, which is sideways like a laptop screen would be, then the camera's right there at the top and the center. It's no more in the vertical mode anymore. So that's a good thing. And if you're going to use office, there is a free version which you can download, except it doesn't sync unless you have 365. So it would only be local. If you're not going to, if you're not going to do anything else, if you're only using that one device, you can get away with it. But if you need it to be syncing and do all the things, then you might want to consider getting 365. And then if you're going to hook up a monitor, you will definitely want to make sure you have one that's got USB C, which I think is all of them now. But you will need a hub so that you can plug in HDMI and anything else because you only get the one USB C port. So you'll need a hub that you can plug into there to have, you know, sd card, have HDMI for your monitor if you're going to have that kind of a monitor and any other accessories that you're going to put on there. So. Okay. Quite good information. But yeah, I guess check each part as I go along. But thank you. Yeah, you could also go into the Apple store if you have one, where you live, anywhere near you, and you could look at them and also see about the, you know, different sizes, the keyboards, all the things. So that'd be a good place to start, I would say. Okay, great. Thank you. All right. Yeah. Good luck. Sheila. Jeff. Hold on. Good afternoon. Hey, Jeff, how are you? Good, Marty. Sorry, Beth. It's Jeff again. That's okay. I'll start changing my, change my name to something that doesn't sound like Beth. That's all right, sounds good. Marty, what would you change about Siri? I'm with Michael. I would just like Siri to work. Exactly. I would love them to, you know, personally, I would love them to make it so that it works the way it's supposed to. I mean, everybody has a different experience with it. I would say the biggest thing, too, is depending on what version of phone you have and what version of operating you have, operating system you have, it works differently. So, like, on older phones that aren't able to update to whatever the current operating system is, Siri still has to call home, which means for it to work, you have to be able to have a good Internet connection so that it will say, like you say, what's the weather outside? It will need to then go out, get the information, and then bring it back to your device. So if you're in a place where you don't have any, either data or Wi Fi, then it just won't work at all. Where you have a newer device, it will work on the device. It doesn't need to call home and then come back. So uniformity would be really great. And then a big problem that a lot of people have is, you know, they activate Siri to start it, and then it misses the front and it misses the end, and then the information isn't accurate. So, I mean, I would just like it to work well, that'd be a great. And everyone could have a very similar experience with it working. Well, that's what I would like to see out of it. And to jump in on that, the. I can't remember what the setting is called, but, you know, when you ask Siri a question and then you can do a follow up, I mean, just what, you know, either using headphones or going through our car stereo. Like that follow up feature, like, when there's one little thing when you're trying to be quiet, I hope that they can add a setting to turn off the follow up feature. Yeah, well, we'll see what happens. We only got to wait till Monday, so. True, true. Okay. Question. And this is, I know, really niche, but on the Apple TV, as far as I could tell, the Apple TV app, it's being more verbose lately. And I want to say probably with what, whatever the last update of the last two updates have been, I mean, really, really verbose. Do the. I tweak that at all with the verbosity settings? Will that have an effect? Like it's. Specifically, again, this is Apple TV. It's saying one phrase four or five times before you can, you know, listen to verbosity is going to be, as far as I know, on your device, not on the app. So the only way I know that you can change that or, or edit that, whatever you want to do would be to go into settings, accessibility, voiceover, verbosity, and then you can mess around with it in there and that should be universal across everything you do on your device. Okay. Let me ask you, are you, you said the Apple TV app. Is this on the Apple TV or is this on the iPhone? This is on the Apple TV. Okay. Yeah. So I feel your pain. I will say I feel your pain. And honestly, once I find something to watch, I typically just turn voiceover off because it just never shuts up, it seems like. Yes, I agree completely. I too, I think that I've heard you say that your wife is cited. Yep, I know. And she's literally told me that she is going to strangle me. I feel your pain and I can relate. Let's hope for some updates for the next tvos. Yes. Thank you gentlemen. No worries. Who's next? Sheila Ann. Hey, Anne, how are you? Can you hear me? Yep, we can hear you. Okay. Actually Siri is working fine for me. I don't have any major problems with it. I think it'd be nice if, you know, if I've got my hands in water and I get an important call. If I could say, hey, Siri, answer the phone and she would actually do it and then they could hear me through the speaker. I don't do any fancy dancy things on the phone to need Siri to do for me. But on messages when I leave them, I wait until it starts talking before I move because it may not go through otherwise. I think some people are moving too fast with the message and it doesn't actually go through. But I wait until the, you know, it starts talking again before press a button and then the message seems to go through. Well, that's good. Yeah. That's typically a lot of the issues that people have is it misses of what you say in the beginning because people don't wait long enough for it to start. But it'd be great if it started right away when you hit the button so that as soon as you start talking it'll be listening to you. I don't. My first word doesn't come out the minute, the second I hit the button, I press the button and then I wait about 1 second, start talking. Right. It takes it just fine. Yeah. Cool. You're one of the, we call you a one percenter of it not having issues. Did you have another question or was that your. I think that's it. All right, well, thank you very much. You have a great day. Judy. Hey, Judy. Hey there. Excuse me. I did a Zoom update on my iPad on Friday and having a major issue and I did reach out to zoom accessibility yesterday morning. Have not heard back. So apparently what is happening is after somebody stops a screen share, it seems as though it is triggering the active speaker avatar for everybody. So voiceover goes crazy. Sounds like it's constantly refreshing the screen, but if there's silence, it doesn't happen. I went through all of the settings. I did that with Bell. Also. We can't find anything that would make this stop. It has triggered some change. There used to be a setting for display, active speaker avatar. It's not there anymore. So it broke something in a big way. And so it doesn't happen if somebody's playing instructions and they're a Mac user and they're using loopback. It only happens when the screen share is stopped. I can't figure out why that is or what happened. So I was wondering if you guys have any thoughts at all. Is that only on the iPad? I don't use my iPhone to go onto calls, but a couple of people in the community do and they are experiencing the same thing. If you go to the more tab and then you go to settings and then you go to. Where did I go in here? Go to meetings and then you go under the general heading and you. I don't know if this is enabled, but the always show meeting controls, if that is on, does that prevent it from switching to active view? I don't think we played around with that because that would constantly show that bar across the bottom with the mute and enable video. And I wonder if it starts to speak to you about active speaker view and you have that enabled. It's not saying anything. It's. So this is what we've just surmised that it keeps showing the active speaker avatar. It just sounds like it's constantly refreshing and voiceover goes crazy. So it's not saying anybody's name or anything. It's just constantly refreshing. So this is what we have figured, because like I said, when it's silent, nothing happens. As soon as, because I went into Belle's room with her and into her Zoom room and one of us starts to talk, it starts to do that. Yeah. Try turning that always show meeting controls on because I wonder if that would, even if it is talkative, I wonder if then if you touch in the bottom left corner on the mute button and put focus there if that will prevent voiceover from speaking all the time as well. That's where I would start by trying. So always show meeting controls. But is that something that I would have to do each time or. No. So you need to be signed into a Zoom account in order to get access to, see, that's the thing. I don't have a Zoom account. I'm just, yeah, I don't have a Zoom. So then I don't know that you would be able to configure it. It might be, I don't know if there's a reason you don't, but it might be worth creating a Zoom account really easily because then you have the more button in the bottom right hand corner and then you can, I think that's only available to signed in users, but then you can tap on meetings and then go down to the general heading and choose that. Always show meeting controls. But here's another thing, before you go through all that headache, I'm 95% sure Bell has one. And if she's experiencing this, I wonder if she goes in. Yeah, she, she said she did. Yeah. So that's where I would try and see if that works. And hopefully that helps you out there, Judy. So. Yeah, because I can't imagine why, why it triggered this after the, after the update. Okay. All right, thanks. I appreciate it. Of course. Thanks. All right. Hello, Beth? Hey, Beth. It's really, Beth this time. It's really bad. Yeah, I don't know, it's, yeah, I have, uh, I have a problem. Like Pam and I, we're discussing this, you know, how mute should be. Mute and unmute should be in the, I think the left hand side of the corner of the screen down below. Well, it isn't always that way. And I'm wondering why it isn't. You know, because I have to, like, if I mute to raise my hand or, you know, I have to have this, the speech on, you know. You know, because otherwise, if I'm not speaking for a while, I have speech off I don't want to hear. Are you talking about in Zoom, Beth? Yeah. Okay. So I would also reference you back to the previous answer, because I think having that always show meeting controls, which again, is available under the more tab settings. Meetings under the general heading, you can choose the always have meeting controls shown that will pin that bar to the bottom. And you should then have the mute unmute always in the bottom left hand corner. Oh, so maybe I need to create an account as well. If you're not signed into an account, that's where I would try, is check there and see if that gives you the experience you're looking for. And just so there's no misconception, creating a Zoom account doesn't cost anything. It just basically gives you a username and a password to sign in and you set your parameters, preferences and all that. And then once you're signed in on whatever devices, everything will carry over. So like, for example, let's say you put your first and your last name in in your account. Then as long as you put your credentials in whatever thing you sign in on in other places, it'll be there. It's not going to charge you anything. You're allowed to have a free account, so that's just having credentials. It doesn't mean you have to pay for anything. Oh, okay. So, so I sign in every time I enter a meeting. Like. No, like just say, if I have, like, back to back meetings. Like just say Thursday, swirl back Thursday, and then. I love braille. So do I sign? I don't have to sign in every time? No. Once you sign in, you're signed in, unless you sign out or you're on a different device or something like that. But once you sign in on a device, then you're always signed in. Unless you sign out. Yes, sir. Oh, and what was the question of the day? The question of the day was WWDC is coming up on Monday and rumors are, we don't know for sure until it happens, but rumors are they're going to be making some significant changes to Siri. So what kind of changes would you like to see in Siri if they were going to improve stuff? Oh, well, well, I. Maybe a little more because sometimes, like when I say call and then a certain number, I sometimes would like more time to like. So if I enter the, if I say area code or not area code, but like to say seven one two, and then she'll say, oh, so you, you want me to call seven one two, you know, and it's like more time to, you'd like to be able to extend the timeout timer. So if it 20 seconds isn't long enough, you'd like to be able to change it to 40 seconds or 60 seconds so that you have more time to get the information in before it cuts you off. Yeah, yeah, that's a good one. A lot of people probably could use that. And also this phone, it does not go beep like the last ones, you know, it vibrates and I can feel it, fortunately. But it doesn't make that sound like it used to. You know, when you push the like me, I push the side button and it used to go beep beep. It does make a sound. I think the sound is different and then it's a lower tone so people have a hard time hearing it. So it'd be good if they maybe put the option back to be able to either change the tone to something that works better for you or maybe make the tone a little bit itch. That is more something easier to hear. Okay. Okay, we'll see what happens. Monday's coming soon, so we'll see. Sounds good. Yeah. Thanks, Beth. Doc. Hey doc. Well, good morning. How are you? Well, a little frustrated. I'm caught in the middle between windows and freedom scientific. My on word Jaws is reading spaces and paragraph marks and it's very annoying and almost impossible to understand when you have a lot of short words and it says space marker when it gets to a space. I've gotten two sets of directions from freedom Scientific, neither which have worked and one from, from Windows help doesn't work. Wondered if you had one that will work. I have a potential idea for you. If you do Jaws key space followed by Z like Zulu, that will load your default jaws settings. So what I would do in this case, doc, is I would open a specific word document that you're having a problem with that is reading way too verbose for you. When you open that and it says space marker or paragraph marker, then do jaws key space that'll play two clicks, tap the letter Z for Zulu, and that will temporarily reset all of your jaws settings to the default jaws settings. Then navigate the document and see if it's still reading that extraneous information to you. If it is not, then that means that it is a configuration setting in jaws that you have altered, and we can then go through and try to figure out what that setting is that's reading that extra information to you. If it is still reading the extra paragraph symbols and space symbols, then what I suspect is happening, and I don't know for sure, but where my mind would go at that point is that I wonder if there's something on your screen that's temporarily overlaying the word document that's preventing you from properly reading it. So again, that's jaws key space Z and then navigate the document, see if it reads correctly. That's a toggle. So pressing jaws key space z again will then turn all of your customized jaws settings back on and fix your voice and everything like that. But that's where I would start with that. Okay. Thank you. No worries, Lori. Hey, Lori. Hey, Sheila. Hi, everybody. So my response to the question of the day is, I would like Siri to work with a capital work, all right. More efficiently than she's been. Because what I'm having trouble with since the most recent iOS 17 updates, and by the way, I have an SE 2020 iPhone, as I've mentioned before, with iOS 15 and 16 and whatever else updates I had before, I never had the problem of. I'll ask her to look up something like a word or a phrase or, you know, even just take me to YouTube. I'll say, you know, how do I operate this and such a device? And she'll start to explain, but then all of a sudden, she cuts herself off. And I hate that. It's bad enough when people interrupt me. I don't like Siri interrupting. I don't get the full effect of that never used to happen. So I want to see that improved on Monday. Well, we will see. Monday's coming quick, so we'll see what happens. I know. Yeah. Coming faster than we can shake a stick at it. But anyway. But the other question I had is, when I get my new Victor Reeder, one of these centuries is my SD card that's in my current Victor reader, transferable. In other words, can I transfer it to the new Victor reader? You should not have any issue with that. As long as the SD card doesn't have any problem or failure or anything like that, you should be able to put it in the new one without an issue. Okay. Because I don't think it has any failure from what I reported last time. However, my Victor reader keeps shutting off every 30 seconds or every 30 minutes, and it's plugged in while it's doing this, which it never used to do, that it shouldn't. Keyword being shouldn't affect your SD card, but you might want to double check it to make sure that it doesn't have any issues. And as long as it doesn't, then it should be fine. Okay. Because I have a lot of stuff on it, on that card. So when I take the SD card out, are any of the things that are on the SD card in the Victor reader? In other words, is it in the Victor reader's memory, or is it just on the card because it won't play without it won't play without the card? Yep. With Victor, from my understanding, all of the pertinent information is stored on the SD card itself. Okay. Because you know, I often wondered because I'm going to ditch this device after I get a new one because it's, it's not performing up the snuff after I spilled my water and about 10oz of it, it did dry out with the help of my oscillating fan. But I don't know if it, if it damaged any of the circuit boards or anything. But it works otherwise, you know, it works beautifully otherwise, water and electronics typically don't get along very well. Laurie, appreciate. No, they don't. And I found that out the hard way in high school. Yeah. Hopefully you'll get your new one soon. So thanks for your participation and we'll see what we get on Monday. Okay, thanks a lot. Keep me, keep me posted. Thanks a lot, guys. We will definitely come back and let listeners know next Tuesday what it is that we have learned about what's coming out for full transparency because I want there to be no confusion. Then we'll go to the next hand here, Apple's awesome date to the operating system on Monday. They're announcing what is coming and those updates will then be available in September. So you guys will be hearing over the summer information about what updates are coming and how that might impact your day to day operation. But there isn't a major update on Monday coming. It's more what's coming in September. Sheila, who do we got next meeting? Pearl. Hi there. Hello, Pearl. Oh, that's me. Sorry, it's jewelry. Still have my crafting name apparently. So first I wanted to comment on the question. I just want Siri to work better with voiceover. I'm tired of it turning my voiceover volume so low that I can't hear it every time Siri activates. And then I have to turn it back up. It's driving me nuts. Yeah. And then for Doc, for the paragraph markers, face markers, if you go into file and then you go to options display, there will be show, always show these markers. And then you can deselect space markers, paragraph markers, and other markers like that there. And jaws will no longer read them because they will not be shown. I've had this issue before and it drove me absolutely bonkers. So that's how to turn those off. File options display and it'll have some checkboxes for markers that you can deselect those so they never show. And then there are checkboxes that you can go through and uncheck. You can just uncheck. There's paragraph marks and hidden text. So. Ah, hidden text. Appreciate that. Yeah. Not a problem. That's the easiest way that I found there is a show hide all button but I don't know how to do that with Jaws. So then my question is one I've got a Lenovo idpad that I've been working with and I don't use a touchpad. I don't have any interest in the touchpad. I don't have anybody else using my IDPad. It's my computer only and I want to turn off the I want to deactivate the touchpad. I don't want it because my hand is brushing against it and messing with the cursor. Is there a way that I can easily do that as a Jaws user? I just went into settings with Windows key I and typed in touch and the second option that popped up for me was turn the touchpad on or off. I don't know if that will work for you. Some lenovo's do also have a button at the top of the touchpad. I imagine yours does not. That allows you to toggle that but that's where I would check and type in touch in the search windows eye touch. Okay awesome. Thank you so much. No worries. Restoria hey Restoria, how are you? I'm fine. I have a problem with my outlook folders. I have one folder that's missing on my computer but it's on my iPad. How can I locate that folder? Are you using gmail? No, I'm using outlook. Okay, and you're saying that the folder, when you do, you go through an outlook with control y to get to your list of folders? I have vision so I just go down the list. That is interesting. That's not showing up I suspect. Is there a folder on your list of folders called imap by chance underneath your outlook email address? No. Okay that's an interesting one. I suspect something is hidden and I'm not sure how to fix that one in this case, especially since it's all Microsoft. If you haven't yet, I would reach out to the disability answer desk and tell them your scenario and see if they have a suggestion for how to get that folder to synchronize over to outlook on your computer. Do you have more than one account in your outlook? It's just one, but now. Okay, because if you go like when you look you'll see like the name of the account and sometimes you have to, if you're using voiceover do a single finger double tap. Or if you're not using voiceover just tap on it and it opens the folder. So that it will drop down and you could see all the list of things under that. If it's closed, then you don't see all the rest of the folders. So you have to make it so it's open. So all of the folders show under each account. Repeat that. If you're looking in the list of folders, let's say, and you're looking at your Hotmail account, for example, because you said you had Hotmail, if you tap your hotmail in the list of folders, it should open up so that it shows you all the rest of the folders under that account. You can open it and close it. So if it's closed, it won't show you the folders, but if you open it, then it drops down a list of all, all the folders under each account. Yeah, well, you might want to make sure that it's just open so that you can see all the folders under your Hotmail account. I did that, but, and the other folders are there, but this one is not. And. Okay, so it's on iPad and I can open that folder. How do I save attachments from an email? On an iPad, you would just scroll down in the email. Once you have the email open and you'll see the attachment. And then what you would do is if you're using voiceover, you would do a single finger double tap on the attachment to open it. Or if you're just, if you're not using voiceover, then you would just tap it and it would open up. Once you have it opened up, you want to go to the bottom and you'll see the little square with the arrow, and it's called share. And from there you can save it wherever you want to save it. So you have to use the share sheet. Share. Okay, that's what I needed. And shameless plug here. If you're interested in reorganizing the share sheet, check out Sunday's digital bytes. Thanks for your question today. Who do we cut next there, Sheila. Okay, Rad, do we have somebody in clubhouse? Yes, we do. We have Jim on the stage. Jim, you can unmute and. Hey, Jim, how are you? I'm well. A couple quick things. First off, when Siri, it'll be great if they change it to where you can say, ask Siri a question. Instead of getting you something from the web, it would just answer, kind of like other voice assistants do. Yeah. And the only other issue that happens is sometimes, like, I'll say, open Amazon. It'll open my prime video instead of opening the Amazon. So it'd be nice if it would get that right, but otherwise, you'd like to see things just continue to improve. Thank you. Yeah, thanks. Thank you. All right, Pam. Hey, Pam. Hello. I very rarely use Siri, so I really can't say that I have an issue with her, because I very, I only use Siri as a kind of a last resort. If I'm really, really in a hurry and I need something right away, then I might bring up Siri. But otherwise, I do things the old fashioned way. And for the one who was having difficulty with the unmute button not showing sometimes, well, some of the zoom events, especially right now, are webinar. And if it is a webinar, you can't unmute yourself. The mute unmute button will not be there until the host gives you permission to unmute. And I do have a free Zoom account. I do have meeting controls turned on. I don't run into that. The problem that she had, except a couple of times, and I don't know what caused this problem, but everything on my screen was just jumping around like crazy. And I think it may have been one problem with whichever Zoom account, not mine, but the way the moderators and whatever had things set up it on their end, because my screen was just jumping around, I would hit the raise hand button, and it would just, it would just jump all over the place, and then I would have to search like crazy to find the unmute button. And when I would hit the unmute button, it would take me into the participants list, and then I'd have to try to unmute it from there. It was just going crazy. But that was not a continuous problem. It just happened a couple of times, and I haven't had it happen since. So that's my story. I don't have an iPad, which is what the previous caller was having a problem with. But I do zoom about 95% of the time I'm on my iPhone, and I typically do not run into that problem. Well, good. So it sounds like let's play with that toggle to see if that fixes it. We appreciate that input there, Pam, and thanks a lot. And to get. And to get it to just quit yammering away, all you got to do is touch the unmute button. Don't, don't double tap it, because you might want to stay muted, but if you just focus on something other than all those avatars, it will at least keep quiet until someone else comes in or leaves the meeting. And if, and if you want to turn that particular control off you can in your settings. Great, Pam, thank you very much. You're welcome. Have a great day. Great call as always. Thank you, Sheila. Ag. Hey, Agg, how you doing? It's been a while. It has. I have two thoughts on Siri. The first is I don't use Siri a lot on my iPad, but I'm hoping that when they make whatever they're going to announce that they're including a healthy dose of AI. Because Amazon is talking about using AI with the Amazon echo system and because they're going to do that, they want to be able to charge for it. So I'm hoping that Apple will put pressure on Amazon to not do that since I use the a t quite frequently. So that's. .1 second point is I do, when I do something with Siri, she always understands me. But when I do voice to text in any number of programs in my iPad, it seems like that it doesn't understand me very well at all in terms of what words and what my diction is. And I'm wondering if they are using two different systems for voice recognition and if so, if they better than the voice to text. That's my understanding, is that there could potentially be two different systems. I don't know that for sure because I've heard that and experienced that. Now, just to dash your hopes, eg, one of the rumors I was reading a couple days ago was that Apple's going to offer a paid version of Siri, too. So I don't know that you'll get exactly what you're looking for, but I think AI would be amazing in Siri. And I was on a show recently today that will publish on Thursday that we were talking about it. And AI doesn't have to be. Siri is all smart and using AI, but AI could be the underlying way that Siri interacts with your phone to make it more useful and productive. So we'll see what, what happens. I'm excited for it. Thank you. Have a great day. Lynn. Hey, Lynn. Lynn, you're muted. All right, well, let's go to Carla. Okay. Can you hear me? Yes. So sorry. No problem. Go ahead, Lynn. So I wish Siri would just work better. I mumble, I guess, and she doesn't understand me all the time. I have a quick question. I am on. I have to use a PC for something and I don't usually use this, but I had to install the new outlook for the windows mail and I'm using Windows ten and I want to know. I got a cheat sheet for this. And so it said when I'm in the message list and I hit shift enter that I can read the message and I can, but I have to get through a bunch of menu options first and I have to do this for every single message. Is there any way to not have to do that? So I have not installed the new outlook because I've been concerned about this being an issue and losing productivity. I don't know if it's, if he's published it yet. I know Jonathan Mosin was going to do an in depth review slash tutorial of that outlook and I don't think it's been published yet. My natural inclination is for the menu options. Are they links by chance or does it just say menu? Because what I would try is I would try to tap the letter n to skip to non linked text. If that doesn't work. The other thing I might try, and I don't know if outlook has done this, so if someone knows is I would try to tap r for region and hopefully they put the message in its own region and then that should skip all of the elements. Okay, that doesn't work. One last thing to do is reach out to the sparrow and or the disability answer desk, especially the disability answer desk because with this being a new version of Outlook, the more individuals who inform them of the difficulties that we have with navigating the application with the screen reader, the more likelihood something's going to get changed. Those are the options I would check out. Okay. Thank you so much. I appreciate your help. No problem. Have a good day. Thanks. You too. Carla? Hey, Carla. Hello? Can you hear me? We can hear you. Okay. I don't get to participate in this call very often because I'm usually teaching school. Well, welcome. We're glad you're here. Rolls out for the summer, although I work sometimes. I think you ought to consider having some of these during prime time. For those of us at work most of the time anyhow, I have two I'm not going to. I'm going to refrain from answering the Siri question because I'm no longer an iOS user. I just got too frustrated with the iPod touch and I'm a shell user and I'm perfectly happy. But anyhow, I have two questions and I won't be with you next week because I'm traveling to Alabama and if I ask any inappropriate questions, you could just ask me to go away. But I don't think these are inappropriate. First of all, with the zoom, okay, since they did the zoom update and I have a paid account. And I run a lot of my classes through my business, my homeschool classes, and some of my adult classes through Zoom. And when I'm setting up an appointment, you know, you know, for the class, sometimes I used to be able to go through and you would see, you know, you could check on and off or the participants microphone and video and also my microphone and video and there's no place to check it, you know what I mean? Anymore. It just has off and it doesn't seem to check. And they've changed their whole interface. And I don't know if it's more difficult to schedule. I don't know if there's anybody that has this issue or anything. Oh, you're not the only one. Nope, that's that. As of, I think it was May 15, it has become a dumpster fire to schedule stuff. Honestly, what I have gone in and done, and I don't know if this is an option for you, but I use now the outlook add on and I just scheduled the Zoom meetings from my outlook calendar because those checkboxes do still work at that point, so you can turn them on or off. The other solution to explore is try logging on to zoom us, choosing the meetings link once you're on the web page, and you should be able to toggle those on and off from there as well. And then those will show up in your Zoom application like your meetings normally would. Okay, so I can, you know, the interface, I don't know about this outlook add on. That's another thing. It won't let me set up a calendar. It says, we notice you haven't had a calendar. And I check it to put it on and it doesn't come on. I mean, it's just so inaccessible. So another solution, and I go back to what we talked about with providing feedback to the disability answer desk. If you weren't aware of it, accessoom us. So accesoom us is the Zoom accessibility help desk. So providing feedback about the less than desirable experience. For example, to get to the list of your meetings, you choose the meetings tab. And then tab 23 times is definitely worth sending a quick email to say, hey, these are challenging. We can't do this very easily. Full transparency. I personally have not sent an email, but it is something worth exploring as well to see if they can. But it's access zoom us. No, accessoom us. Oh, okay. Yeah, because it's an address. Yep. Okay. Then the other quick question I have, and I'm collecting answers on this one ever since the Jaws update. When I go to reply to an email message in outlook and I go into the reply, you know, the screen is just, it just says blank, blank, blank blank blank. And just to get to see what the other person wrote and get an edit field, I have to shift tab back to the subject and then go back in. Is there something I, I don't know if it's a Jaws thing or something jaws has changed or if there's something I can do about this or if anybody else has been having this issue. I have not had that issue. If anyone else is having that issue, feel free to share. We've got about 14 minutes left, so we'd be glad to hear that. What you could try is the first step that I suggested to the individual who's having issues with word. I suspect my suggestion is not going to help him because I think that we figured out where to go to disable the issues he was having. But you can try doing the Jaws key space followed by Z, which is a toggle that will toggle any of the customizations you've made to jaws, including custom scripts off and it'll set jaws back to default and then see if Outlook works as expected. I don't know if that'll fix it, but that's personally where I would start to troubleshoot that. So it's Jaws. It's Jaws Spacebar and then Z. Yep. So Jaws key space. So either insert or caps lock. You'll hear two clicks, tap the letter Z for Zulu and then you'll hear Jaws say default alternate user directory mode and that's what that will speak in it. Possibly a slower and different voice because you've reset all of your settings. Try outlook. If it works for you then, then it could potentially be a setting that you have changed. And then to get back to your jaws, just do that jaws key space and then Z for Zulu again and that'll toggle it back to what your jaw settings were. Okay. Okay. Thank you very much and thank you for providing this wonderful service of answering our questions. No problem. Glad to have. Thank you. Have a great day. All right. Area code 970 ending in 874. Can you tell us who you are please with star six. Hi, this is Katherine. I have a question. I'm in assisted living and I have no control over my Internet access here, but I was wondering if there's a way that I can make it faster to speed up. Right now I am using a bs six. I know that I'm supposed to update it, but be very fearful of updating it here. Since Internet is so horrible and so I wanted to be able to have faster access to Internet. Is there a way that I can use my ISP from my home to access my Internet here? Thank you. You would have to just hook your phone up to their Wi Fi, but if you don't want to do that. Well, what kind of phone do you have? I have a blind shell and then I have a bs six that I'm going to hook up to the instance player. Thank you. Yeah, I don't think there's going to be a whole lot you're going to be able to do. Part of the issue with places where there's so many people living that during the time when everybody's up and moving about and they're doing stuff, it's going to slow down because there's so many people trying to access the Internet at the same time. The only thing I could really suggest is two things. One is, well, actually three things. One is trying to use the Internet when less people are using it. So maybe really early in the morning or maybe later at night when there's nothing. Not so many people trying to access the Internet at the same time. Secondly is depending on where the wifi is coming from, maybe if you have a device like your phone that's mobile enough that you can maybe get closer to where the Wi Fi signal is coming from. If you're far away from it, it might be a little bit slower. And lastly, you might want to talk to whoever's in charge there and let them know that your Internet's super slow. Is there anything they can do to help you out? Maybe they have like a mobile hotspot. They can move closer to where your room is or where your space is and see if there's anything that they can suggest or maybe do for you if the first two options don't work for you. But other than that, it's kind of is what it is, unfortunately, I think so. I've been here a long time. I didn't know about mobile hotspot. I've talked to other staff members and they. Theirs is fine, but it's, you know, it depends on where their office is and it's. It's in the outside of the dining room, it's where their offices are. I don't know. I also did all of the suggestions you made, including in the middle of night downloading email and things like that. So what you would be looking for is like an extender, so you can ask them to look and see how weak the signal is. Where your room is or wherever you are. And there's a possibility they could add an extender, which kind of is an extra antenna to make the wireless closer to you work a little bit better if it's a weak signal. But you'd have to ask them and see if that's something they'd be able to do for you. Okay. I was hoping that when the new company that bought this place would be in place that maybe the Wifi would be better, but I'm not sure about that. I haven't had time or an opportunity to talk to them yet because. And introduce to the new people in charge. Yeah. We just go down and introduce yourself and see if you can get someone to talk to and see what you can make happen. But thank you very much. Yeah. Good luck to you. Thank you. Thank you. Bye. All right, you got about seven minutes and eight hands, so here we go. Brad, you got somebody in clubhouse. Yes, we have. Andrew. Go ahead, Andrew. Hey, Andrew, how you doing? Good afternoon. How are you? We're good, thank you. Great. Just that previous caller talking about Jaws, the latest version, when I downloaded it, I had the same issue in terms of not being able to hear what my emails were, even though it was actually going through the emails in the inbox. So I called up freedom scientific and they told me what I had to do, which was to basically go back to the freedom Scientific downloads page and redownload jaws and then select repair during that process. And that fixed it up entirely. They also sent out a blog to that effect. And it's probably in the messages section within jaws as well on how to do that. So hopefully that'll help. The other question I had, and I was kind of heard sort of what you were talking about in terms of zoom. Zoom. And I have a problem with Zoom. And what's the Microsoft Teams, thanks. Yeah. Thank you. Teams. Where I cannot find the raise hand button anywhere. And I've gone through it over and over and over again. It's very frustrating, especially in teams, because that's a bit of a larger meeting for me. And so there's a lot more people in that environment, and it's hard. I just can't find where I would raise my hand to. To speak. And I'm using my iPhone here. Oh, you're using your iPhone? Okay. Yeah. Sorry. I do not have as much experience with teams for Zoom. Raise hand should be under the reactions menu in the bottom of your phone. Okay, I'll try that. I looked there before, but I'll try it again because you know, I'm blind and sometimes miss things. So there we go. If you have a Bluetooth keyboard, you know, you could hook up a Bluetooth keyboard to your iOS device and then you can use the keyboard shortcut cuts in order to raise your hand, lower your hand, do all those things, mute and unmute and everything. So that might be easier for you if you happen to have an extra Bluetooth keyboard around. Yeah, I have an old one, so I don't think it's up to date for as far as the Bluetooth connections go. Gotcha. All right. Thanks for that suggestion. To look up for your scientific. There's a blog post that says what to do if jaws can't read web pages or email messages. So check that out if you are having that issue. All right. All right, Rick, here we. Rick. Uh oh. There you are. We can hear you. Okay, sorry. There you go. Just a couple questions about Siri first. I use Siri a lot. I'm not sure some of the problems that people have. I really don't have any problems with Siri. You're lucky. I don't know if Siri has me trained or I have Siri trained, but I think consistency is, for me anyway, has been a big factor in maybe, maybe having some of that success. My other comment about Siri is in regard to what I hope to see. I would really like us to be able to rename our devices something other than Siri. Yes. I yell, hey, Siri. And 15 devices all go off dinging at me. None of them. Yeah. Anyway, that's my thoughts. Awesome. Well, thank you very much. And you have a great one. Lisa. Lisa. Hi, everybody. I'll keep it short. I'm not going to repeat anything anybody else said, but I do have a question about, I got an iPad, second generation somebody gave me because they got a new one and it can't be updated anymore. What do you, how long do you think I'll be able to use it? I was able to do some apps. Pardon me, I would. Somebody else. Don't worry about it. Oh, okay. How long do you think, what's the life expectancy? Expectancy? You think I might be able to get out of it? Well, you're probably not going to be able to update it to the current operating system. I'm assuming it's a pretty old laptop or iPad. So the life expectancy you're going to get out of it is whatever you can do with it until you can't do it anymore. So however long the battery lasts and however long it supports whatever apps you're using on it really is the best answer that I can give you. You just use it until you just can't anymore is really the thing. And if you get to the point where you're starting to have security issues and apps are saying that the operating system is too old and it's just running so slow, you can't really do anything. Battery's not holding a charge, then it would be time to retire it and look at something newer. Most people update because they want to be able to run the current operating system at least. Or maybe only one back, possibly. Yeah. I mean, that's what I can tell you pretty much. Okay. Good to know what to look out for, though. Thank you so much. Have a great day, everybody. Yep. Also check your hard drive size and make sure you're not using up all your hard drive space because that will slow you down a lot as well. Oh, thank you. Okay. All right, iPhone three. We've got four. That's me. Hello. Hello. I just have a really quick question as far as Siri. I don't even know where to begin. So just improve it, please. Quit adding new things. Just fix what doesn't work. And my question does have to do with Siri. I am using an iPhone ten and I have the, it's the XR and I have the latest iOS update. And for whatever reason, when I say Siri, text such and such, nine out of ten times it's calls such and such, and it is starting to cause me real issue. Any suggestions? This just began. It's really frustrating. You restart your phone ever, just out of curiosity? Yes, I do. Yeah, I restarted it just the other day. The only other suggestion I would have is instead of saying text, try saying send a text message to. I have, yeah, I've been doing that. That works most of the time, but I. She no longer, if you say text, she always calls. And the other day it even called something, set it off and it called somebody without my knowledge. And because they couldn't get me to speak, they called the police. Ah, that's. So you could also try just saying message instead of text. And that might. I'll try that. I didn't think of that. Thank you. No worries. I think we've got time for one more hand. All right, Tom Kaufman. I'll be as quick as I can. I have things, but in the interest of time, I'll just do that another time. Is there any way that I can make outlook understand that I want to use? Like, if there's an email that has a link in it that I want to click. Can I make it understand that I am using chrome and not edge for my browser on Windows or on your phone? I'm on my, on my computer. There is. Okay. And I don't remember. You can. I don't remember exactly where you go, Tom, but I. If I can figure out those directions, I can send those to you in an email. Okay, I would appreciate that, Michael. No worries. Nice. You got. I will send it to community and they'll get it off to you there, Tom. Oh, good deal. Thank you. No worries. So, Marty, wrap it up. Yeah. We are all out of time today. We're sorry if we did not get to your question, but we want to say thank you to Brad and to Sheila for helping out. As always, we appreciate you guys so much and everyone else for being here. If you have any questions for us, you can email us at feedback, unmute show, and for everything else, you can check out our website at Unmute show. Have a great week and we'll see you next time.
