Today's Unmute Presents community call was hosted on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Hey everyone, welcome back to another unmute. Wanted to give a couple announcements here at the top as usual. First we want to remind everyone we'll take all first questions and if we have time then we'll take second questions so you can get your hands up with your tech questions. Also, please be respectful. Let everyone get their questions answered in the same respect as you would want your questions answered. And always remember, there's no dumb questions. The question of the day today is what is your favorite accessible technology or service? And with that being said, we have Michael Joyce with us today. Hey Michael, how's it going?
Hi Marty, good. Everything's going great. Getting over convention crud and just getting back in the swing of things. After being back. We have not done any Iacast episodes this week, just kind of getting back in the swing of things. We do have the swiftui training class going on, which is excellent. Email me if you'd like to know more. And for the question, I have to say I think my favorite accessibility device or service I think would have to be my meta ray ban glasses. Those, even as a low vision person, have almost even replaced my other favorite glasses, my vision pro. As far as usefulness while being out and about, I bet everybody's surprised to hear me say that. But they are fantastic. They're a lot more affordable than the Vision pro, and they're really useful when you go to a mall or, you know, in your apartment complex trying to find things. So that has to be my favorite. So I'll hand it back to you guys.
Thanks Michael. Always glad to have you here. And I will say that if you want to hear about the meta glasses, go check that review out on iAcast. They did a really, really great review and talked all about the ins and outs, ups and downs of the meta glasses, and it was a great one. So I've actually listened to it a couple of times myself. In any case, as usual, we have Michael Babcock with us. Hey Michael, how you doing?
Hey Marty. For visual representation, I am on video today and you are seeing me in my polo shirt and my new studio, which we talked about on double or not double tap, technically working yesterday, the foam noise dampening panels that we added to the walls and my sit stand desk and more information about that on Mastodon. And we'll be doing some more content on it in the near future. On Sunday, we published digital bytes. And on digital bytes, I showed you about flexible web customizing the web for your needs to be more productive with using jaws. I published with there. Marty showed you the personal hotspot on iOS. And then Chris shared the Redragon K 621 keyboard. If you're looking for a mechanical keyboard that has plenty of sound to it, then definitely check out that redragon K 621 keyboard. And I believe Chris said it was on sale on Amazon. So you want to check out digital bytes. We did not publish any other content this last week. For those astute listeners, we did not publish Tuesday, or, I'm sorry, Thursday calls for the third and fourth Thursday of the month. Katie talks. Travel is kind of on a hiatus right now because she's been super busy going into the summer and fall season, and Marty will have some creative things coming up in the very near future that I'm super excited about. So you want to give that a listen to answer the question of the day? Uh, I'm going to go with Ira. It's. It's. It's probably tried and true of a, uh, access technology service. Uh, but as I was telling people before we got started, I was able to snap some photos and have those photos emailed to me without any troubles. And. And the agent even went above and beyond and cropped my hands out of the image from holding the crumple, crumpled up receipts. So, uh, definitely my go to access technology is Ira. Uh, and if you are an ACB member, you can have a, uh, I believe it's a 10% discount. So reach out to customer service for those details. That's all I got right now. Sheila, who do we have first?
Christy. Hey, Christy. Hello. How are you doing? Good, good. How are you doing?
We're good. I just wanted to find out a couple of things here first. When you use your phone, and I've had this happen, I have a 128 iPhone 13 pro, and the problem is, is that it says, I'm running short of space. But here's the deal. I don't have a lot on it. I mean, I have some apps and stuff on it, but I don't have a lot of stuff downloaded to it. Maybe a few hard books, but nothing else. I don't have anything else downloaded onto it. But yet when I go look at the data, it says, like, YouTube uses 70 something megabits of data. I mean, but it's kind of confusing. Like, how does that mess up the phone? If I'm not actually downloading content onto the phone, how can I free up some space?
Everything, everything on your phone takes up space, no matter what it is, big or small. So even if you have an app on your phone, if you don't use it, it's still taking up space. So what I would suggest doing, and the great place to start would be to go through, you know, all of your apps. And if there's apps that you just never use, delete them. And I would start with right out of the gate, if you don't use either of these two apps, garageband or imovie, delete those two because they're mad.
They're gone. They've been gone. They've been gone. So otherwise you can go through and just delete apps that you don't use. But you can also go to settings, general storage, and it'll give you kind of how large your hard drive is, what you have available, what you have used up, and then below that, you'll see all of those apps there and they'll show you how often use them, how much space they take up. I mean, other than that, I would look at documents folder, pictures folder, music folder, so.
Right, right. Well, like I said, with YouTube, it's saying that I've used 77 point something gigabytes, but it doesn't make, I don't know how, I mean, I take, when I take it off, it doesn't free up anything. Do you have your phone updated to the most recent update? How often do you restart your phone, like, just basically shut it off and turn it back on again? Oh, a couple of times a week at least. Oh, wow. Michael, got any, Michael Doyce, got any ideas?
Yeah, I have several ideas that I'll go through. And keep in mind, there's two things here. There's how much space YouTube might be using and how much space, how much data that app has used. So if it's saying 79GB in the, like Marty said, general iPhone storage, then you could delete that there. But if it's not making a difference, that might. The number you might be seeing is how much data the YouTube app has been using. Yeah, I think that's what it's doing.
Yeah. There's also that general and iPhone storage is going to be your best guide to know how much space is being taken up by different things. You can delete different things from that iPhone storage section that we were talking about. But also once do you listen to Apple Music or use the music app or podcasts? Yeah, I do use those. Yeah. So go to general iPhone storage, find podcasts and you might see a lot of downloaded podcasts that you can delete. The other.
I did that. I did that actually already. I did great. And same thing with the music. I always doing that.
I don't know, music is a little different. And the reason is. The reason music is a problem is it likes to cache a lot of the music that you stream. So it takes up and it doesn't show it, as always as music on your device, it shows it in the system. And this has been a glitch in some devices. And sometimes the only way to free up that space, and I know this is weird, is sometimes signing out of iCloud and signing back in, like, not out of iCloud, out of your Apple ID from music or the App store will free up that space. And don't exactly ask me why because I don't know why that works, but I've had to do that whenever I've had smaller iPhones to free up space. But it's just when you said you have 128 gig iPhone, is that correct? Yeah, yeah. Sometimes, you know, if you delete all of your apps on your phone, you try all these things. Just signing out of your account and signing back into your Apple account can sometimes fix some of those space.
Yeah, because I've done a lot of deleting and offloading and all that other stuff, and it doesn't seem to do any good.
And finally, I would suggest really quick is also check the quality of music in your settings of the music app. Because if you have it on super high quality or large quality, you know, it might be taking up more space than if you chose a lesser quality. Because in order to have a higher quality of sound, you need to have a bigger, less compressed file, which takes up more space on your device. So if you lower the quality of your audio, that will make it take up less space. If that is something that's also causing an issue.
And we'll go on to the next in here in a moment. Christy, I don't know if they mentioned it, but in, in photos, when you delete a photo, you're not actually deleting it, you're moving it to the trash. So you might want to go empty your photo trash, and that might help. So, uh, save a lot of space as well, especially if you have a lot of screenshots. It's under the albums tab on the bottom, if you go down to albums, and then you can go down to trash, I believe. Is that correct, Michael?
I believe so, yeah. I believe I'm using 18, so I don't remember exactly how. I'm beta and 18, so I'm using that myself. Well, that could be an issue right there. Yeah. Being on beta, there's a lot of. Some storage issues in beta, so that. Could be playing that before. Okay. I even were doing that before I even did that. So, yeah. Without us seeing your phone, we can't exactly diagnose what's going on there. But there's a few places to check out. Helps you out there. Yep.
And one more question, and I'll. Then I'll put how do you check the battery status on a chromebook? Where do you go to check that alt shift s? I believe it's either alt or control shift s will take you to your status menu. I think it's alt shift s. And then you can use your arrow keys to navigate. If alt shift s doesn't work, try control shift s. And just to answer.
Michael's question, if you open up photos, you go to the list where all of the files and folders are all the way at the bottom. It does say, either, depending on your operating system and your phone trash or recently deleted. So you would want to empty whichever those are if you have stuff in it. Got you. Okay, thank you. Thank you very much, Sheila. Who do we got next? Belle? Do we have somebody in clubhouse? Hello, clubhouse. We got Jane. Hey, Jane. Hey, Jane.
She's smart. She saw there was a lot of hands. She's like, I'm gonna jump over the clubhouse.
Yeah, I figured it out. The mute button. Sure. Hi, everybody. So, I am actually looking for hunt for budget active noise cancelling headphones right now. I still have, after eight years usage, the Bose Quietcomfort 35 twos, which I found out they're not making anymore. I know that Bose came out with a new pair of headphones, but they are $430, which I refuse to spend on a pair of headphones. So if you're like me and are on a search, there is soundcore by Anker, and they have the space Q forties for maybe a third of the price, 160, which is more palatable than.
Um, 400, then 400 for sure. Another pair that I'll recommend. Are you looking for earbuds or headphones? Oh, over the ear headphones. They have to. Well, I like the ones that have the aux cable with.
Okay, so let me. Let me blow your mind with a one that's even a third of that price. So for $52 at Athens, we offer the tribute quiet plus. I believe they're the Q seventies. I believe if you just search for quiet plus or noise cancellation, you'll find over the ear headphones that have a active noise cancellation switch on it that you can switch on or off. And they do also do Bluetooth and 8th inch to 8th inch. And it does ship with an 8th inch to 8th inch cable, charges via USB C, and comes with a carrying case. And they're $52. So worth checking that out, out as well.
Oh, that sounds good. You can send me two pair of those and send Michael Doyce a pair as well. Yeah. And also I want to add another thing you could do. There's a little microphone you could get if since is. I'm assuming that these are aux cable, right? Yeah, Michael. Yep.
So there's a. The V Moda boom micro is really, has a really good sound. I mean, you could use it to podcast with almost. And it plugs in to the Aux port and it just plugs right into your headphones. And it adds a really decent microphone to your headphone setup. So a really neat accessory. And that's only $20. So for, you know, $75. Yeah, you've got a pretty nice little setup there. Yep. So what's the sound quality like on those, Michael?
On the headphone or the microphone? The headphones, they. It's amazing. I really like them. It doesn't offer any of the advanced features that Apple offers with their headphones, but I'm fine with that. So it's just standard headphones. You can turn. It does not have pass through mode. So that may be important for some. But it does have active noise cancellation either enabled or disabled. Average battery life, I think is 12 hours. Twelve or 14 hours. Um, they fold up and they go into their little case, or you can throw them in a bag. Um, and, and as I said, they charge with USB C. And you can get them at our new redesigned website at@guys.com dot.
Great. All right. And we did do a digital bytes on them a couple of weeks ago as well. Sheila, who do we got next? I will say that we do have someone else in clubhouse. You can come back to us though. Because you have come back to you after Beth there. Okay, thanks. Thanks for letting us know there. Hey, Beth?
Yeah, yeah, I have a problem with YouTube music and, and I have the free. It used to let me skip the ads. Yeah. We'd go on my screen up to video player and then swipe to the right and it would say skip ad, but now it doesn't let me do that. And also it, you know, if I want to, like, just say, go back to the beginning of the album with, on the screen where it says collapse player, and then it says double tap to expand instead of, like, you know, going, you know, to where it says search and then back where I can search for another album. It just plays the. It plays the previous ad and the previous song. So. And I don't know, I don't see a feedback on YouTube music. So I. And I tried the feedback on YouTube and then it didn't give me, you know, where. Where I could write it, you know, the feedback in. So.
So YouTube is an ad driven company. So them not letting you skip the ads does not surprise me. That is very possible that that's the case now. And there isn't anything you can do about that aside from paying YouTube for YouTube music. Um, and related to your issue with skipping back and not being able to go back to the previous album, I can't help with that. And maybe a listener has an idea and they can raise their hand and then chime in and let us know. But I don't use YouTube music, mainly because it is ad driven. And if I'm going to pay money, I'm going to pay Apple for higher quality audio.
Well, and YouTube lets me skip the ads. YouTube music does nothing. But then why does it say it can now be skipped? Then it shouldn't say that.
It shouldn't. And if you're having that issue, remember, and here's something that I think a lot of people forget about, and I think it's important. If you can't find the feedback button and you want to give accessibility feedback to Google, which, oh, well, technically to Alphabet, which owns YouTube, you can always go to the be my eyes and then choose specialized assistance, go down to technology and then choose Google, and you can call the Google accessibility desk right there, and they can give you some input and feedback on how to navigate the YouTube app, the YouTube music app with voiceover, and let them know some of the problems that you're facing. And that would be the direct way to get a hold of Google. And that's something, as a blind individual, we have as an advantage to other individuals who are using Google products because the general public can't just pick up a phone and call Google. But as a blind user with accessibility feedback, I hear a lot of complaining about how Google doesn't work and Google doesn't care, but there is the direct line to the Google accessibility team.
I didn't even know that. Yep, yep. So try that out and see if they can give you any sort of input on why the YouTube music is not working. Okay. Okay. And what's I podcast? Is that like the same as Apple, like, like for those glasses? Because I want to know. I want to check those out. You know, I heard a tutorial, but. Yeah.
So you're thinking of iAcast, not iPodcast. IAcast is a podcast that Michael Doyze hosts. And if you use your podcast app, or I believe you might be able to find it on YouTube, just search for iacast. That's India Alpha space, charlie Alpha, Sam Tango, iacast. And you should be able to find the IA cast in your favorite podcast app or in YouTube. And you can give that a listen. Another resource to be conscious of is at acb media.org. if you just search for smart glasses. Cindy Hollis did a two part segment that allows you to hear her actually using the glasses. And it's 2 hours of meta ray bandhead goodness. So check that out as well.
Yeah, yeah. Those sound really cool. Perfect. Thanks, Beth. Let's jump back over to bell in clubhouse. Who do you got over there, belle? All right, we've got Greg. Hey, Greg. Hey, Greg. Triple G. Hello. It was a pleasure meeting both Michaels, Michael and Deweese. I think I met you, or Joyce. Sorry, I met you in the elevator. And Michael Babcock. Yes, you met me all over the place.
Triple G. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You were all over the place. So that was fun. Hey, question for you. So I have trouble keeping track of chargers. And so I'm wondering, is there a universal USB. I know this exists, but I am just recommending. I'm just getting your recommendations on what might be a probable thing for me. A USB charger that can keep all my things charged so that I don't have to look for chargers anymore. For each and every specific thing. Are you looking for type a or type c chargers?
Well. So for instance, my razor now has, the new electric razors have, I think, is there an a and a c? Is that a thing? So what Michael is asking you there, triple g is the part that plugs into the wall that you're going to plug into your block. Do you need a or c for that? I'm not really sure that's, that's the thing. So the reason.
The reason why I'm asking is like most of my devices are all USB C, and so I typically just carry around USB C chargers and the reason why I was. One of the things I was going to recommend, Apple has this 35 watt charger that has two USB C ports on it that plugs into the wall. And I know that there's some anchor ones that have four USB a ports that you could plug in the wall. It kind of just depends on what kind of chargers, you know, you're trying to do to charge. So it kind of depends on the devices and things like that, but there's all different kinds that you can get with different variations. So it just kind of depends on the scenario there.
And, Marty, didn't you recommend a charger a couple weeks ago on digital bytes?
Yeah, there one I recommended. It was made by anchor. And the cool thing about the one I recommended was it has a cable already attached to it, a USB C cable. So you can plug that into anything that takes USB, and you can charge it up. It also has a USB C port. So in your case, if you had a USB C to USB A, you can plug that cable in to that port and charge a second device. And then the cool thing about it is it has a wall plug, so you can plug it into the wall, and then it will charge your devices. And then when you're on the go, it has a built in battery so that you can charge on the go as well. So it's kind of everything you need all in one package without having to worry about much else. So that's came in around $40. It has a couple of different power options, five and ten, I believe. And it was very affordable. And then I actually have one of them, and it works awesome. So, okay.
And you said that that's made by anchor. Yes. Now you're looking for accessibility. Then I would go to Michael Babcock at guys. He's got a great portable battery in both ten and 20 versions for power that also works really well. Okay. Okay. And you talked about that on digital bytes, you said? Yep, I did. That was the name of the podcast. Okay. Yep. So if you go to unmute show, and if you type in anchor in the search field, it'll pop right up.
Oh, great. See all these new resources? Okay, awesome. Thank you very much. No problem. Strip. Before we get to the next person, let me just shout out the question of the day really quick. If you were late to unmute today. But the question of the day is, what's your favorite accessible technology or service? So that is the question. If that's something you want to chime in on. And Sheila, who do we got next? Rick? Hey, Rick. Hey Rick, how are you? Good. Sorry, I've been having audio issues.
You're good? No problem. That was my question. Good.
Doing good. Windows eleven laptop no external speakers, no external microphones, just plain Jane laptop updated to Jaws, the July update that all the enhancements for picture smart. After that update, when I join a Zoom call, I can hear my computer audio. I can hear the audio that tells me people are joining the room, leaving the room, whatever. However, I cannot hear the voices. The only way that I found to remedy this is to go into the audio settings and the only options I have there are Realtek audio, realtek speakers or same as default system. I can hear audio upon switching to either one. So like to come in here today. It was set from yesterday at same as default. When I logged in I had to change it back to real tech speakers. Audio pops up, everything's fine, but every time I come in I have to change it to one or the other.
So I have ran into this issue before. So first of all, hopefully that makes you feel a little better that it's not just a issue with your computer. What you can try doing. And my zoom is freezing up on me. So I'm going to try to get the directions for you while we're talking here. But if you go into the zoom, first of all, I would make sure your zoom is up to date and you can do that by going into zoom workplace from your start menu and then go find your name, press spacebar on that and then go up to check for updates. That's where I would start. And then if you go to the home tab, um, and then you tab past your name, um, you're going to get the information about their get offer, blah blah blah. Continue tabbing to the settings option and then this will put you in the categories drop down. If you drop down and you go to audio, what I would do there is make sure that your default speakers are set to same as system and then continue tabbing through that option or through that screen. And I'm looking for the option here and make sure that the checkbox is checked to automatically join audio by computer. And I think if you check for updates, change that default output to your same as system and then make sure that that automatically join audio by computer is checked that hopefully will fix the problem for you.
So under settings go to audio and then follow it through. Yep. And then that's also the place for people who are curious that you can check the box that says always mute my audio when I come into a meeting because I don't know about you, but I prefer my audio to be muted when I come in. So that, that should help you there. Perfect. Thank you. No worries. Thanks for the hopefully semi easy question. Please follow up. Let us know if that helps you out. Sheila, who do we got next? Hey, Judy.
Hey, Judy, how are you? Hey there. Doing well, thanks. First to answer the question, Ira. I love Ira. Me too. Good. I would like to know how to have jaws. Tell me how many lines are in a Microsoft word document. If it's something I ever knew, I have forgotten and I googled it and I cannot find any, you know, hotkey or whatever. I just, I cannot find that information. So does anybody know how to do that? That gives you all of the other details. Right. I tried Jaws key page down.
Right. And jaws key three on the numpad tell you, gives you the word count and the number of pages, but does not tell you the number of lines. I might need to get back to you on this, Judy. I think there is a way on this. Yeah, I just don't know what it is. So let me get back to you on that and stay tuned. Okay, perfect. Thanks a lot. All right, Bobby. Hey, Bobby, how are you? Oops, I don't want my python GPT. That's not going to help me. Bobby needs to unmute. Hey, Bobby. Hey, Michael.
Yeah. Let me just move my mic a little closer and we can hear you. Just fine there, Bobby. Okay, then I don't have to do that. No.
Anyway, I am so happy with a lot of people suggestions. I've been getting a lot of emails about tagging music with the blind shell. And I just want to give you information that you didn't have. Just to let you know, there's a couple of programs, there's FUBAR 2000. And when you hit your applications key, I never knew it. It's a hidden feature in Foobar. It has tagged menu, but you can't just hit the tag button. What you have to do is you have to do it with a service. Like you have to choose what service you want to do. Otherwise you're going to get less than an unknown greater than when you're putting your untagged music onto the blind shell. So you have to pick either music brains or freeze to do it.
Okay.
And another little thing is I somehow I can't do it in bulk. I don't know why it won't work in bulk. I have to keep doing album by album and it's kind of tedious. So if there's any way we could do it in bulk. And another program I discovered that can do it. This is going to kind of blow people away. Switch sound file converter. There's an edit menu, and you can actually edit tags, but I'm only able to do folder by folder with that. I can't do like, I want to be able to do all the artists, if there's any other way. If anybody knows of a suggestion that would work with that. And another thing, I want people's opinion on the JBL to go to. Excuse me. And how good it is. I have it, and I think it's a good speaker, but it comes with micro USB instead of USB C. And I'm kind of sad that there's going to be no more blind shell for three months. So that's all I have to say.
Well, thank you, Bobby. Definitely appreciate it. I. I can't go into details, but I will just hint it. I think Diane's working on some stuff in the background, so we'll see how that works out in the, in the near future. Blind shell 101. Hopefully I'll be back in a couple of months and definitely appreciate that. If anyone has any feedback on the JBL, go to, I think is the name of the speaker. Feel free to let us know. And unfortunately, I can't help you with switch, although that is a tried and true tool that has been around for decades now. So NcH swift sound makes some great software. Really appreciate it. Before we move on, I do want to follow back up with Judy. I don't have a direct answer for how to get the line count. However, control shift g, like go, will give you the document statistics. And in the document statistics, you'll receive the word count, character count, paragraph count, and line count. So you can get that information again. That's control shift g, like good.
Okay, great. Thank you, Michael. No worries. Who do we got next? Sheila? Erica, 951 ending in three, four, two. Can you tell us who you are, please? Hi. Hi. This is Nancy Unger. I've been on this call for a long time. I have a question about the dollar 52 headset. The quiet plus noise cancellation over the year. Does that work with the blindstroke classic two and the smart version three? I had those phones. Yep. Yep.
Okay. And then also the arx headsets. I know you don't sell it. I mean, I. For people with hearing loss, I think frisk Ray sells it. I prefer to have over the ear headset would be. I think it'd be more secure for me. Do you know anything about the arx headset. Just a quick. I want to be, I want to be succinct. Thank you.
Yeah, so, so Arx came out with a new version, I think it's called 1.5 and it's a headset that is wired to your phone. It does currently work with Android. So the smart vision three and the blind shell, but it also will work with iPhone fifteen s. I believe they've released that. If not, it's coming in the very near future. And so that is a bone conducting headset. So if you have any hearing loss it's probably not a good fit for you, but that will allow you to snap photos with the camera that's attached to the headset and get OCR, those documents and get some information. I personally do not have that much experience with this headset. I've seen it twice at two different conventions. I will say the reviews that I have heard have not been very favorable of them, but Chris Gray does sell it and it is a tool that's available out there. Nancy, that would work with both of your phones.
Ray ban would be better because is it good for hearing loss, people hearing loss, the extra glasses you can get anywhere.
So the ray band are glasses that you can get anywhere if you are an Airpods user, which I don't think you are, but if you were then they will connect directly to your Airpods. I feel like the Ray bands would be better for people using hearing aids because they have speakers that fire directly towards your ears so that might be easier to hear. And the sound quality on the Ray bans is amazing. That's the very 1st, 1st thing I said when I put a pair of these on was holy favorite explicit. These sound amazing. So definitely a great, great setup for those. So I'd check them out, Nancy. And then remember Ray band offers a 45 day return window. So if you get them and you're like these just don't work out for me, then you can always return them to Ray ban as well or to meta.
You guys don't sell them? Do you have to get them from place or whatever? No, you can get them from meta, you can get them from Amazon, you can get them from several different places, but no, at guys does not sell them. Okay, thank you. No worries. Thanks Nancy, appreciate it. Who do we got next there? Sheila Gregory. Hey Gregory. Participants left. Hello, how are you doing? Good, how are you?
Um, your question was what my favorite tech is I have the ray bans. Uh, but I have to speak up because I am testing Celeste glasses. It's December every day. And I'm having really good results with these glasses. They just come out with a video calling prototype. So I want the people know that there is something, a good pair of glasses that are made for the blind community that's coming. And when these glasses are released, I think people are going to be amazed at what they're going to be able to do. So, you know, let's have to put a plug in because I am really pleased with them so far.
And Gregory, I don't know if you heard Steven's response to your email yesterday on double tap, but he really would be interested in you demonstrating some of that and sending, sending in a quick audio demo. I'm trying to do that. I'm trying to figure out how to do that with Mike and I'd like to do a GoPro too at the same time. There you go.
Yeah, I got a question real quick. I just recently updated, I think update, a Windows update and a lot of my dark mode has disappeared from some of my websites like informed delivery and a couple others. And I is there a Windows wide setting that I can just set every website to dark mode? I mean, after this update, it just did it before too. Anybody give me an idea on how.
To Marty, what's that dark mode plugging you use for your browser? Because I don't think it, I don't know of a reliable way to set all apps to dark mode, but Marty used a plugin that worked in safari and I believe it'll work in edge as well. Yeah, let me look it up real quick and I'll get back to you. Hold on 1 second.
Okay, there, there is a way you can set windows itself to a dark mode. There's, you could change your theme in windows to dark mode, but that doesn't, that doesn't mean that it's going to set web pages. That's the one issue. But I would try that sometimes. Changing your theme to dark mode, set it back to light mode and back to dark mode may reset it. Yeah, may tell it to, may fix your websites. But again, the only way to truly do that in the browser is to have a plug in like Marty has.
And to get to that, I just did it to verify if you go to the start menu and you type in dark, it'll pop up with dark mode. Hit enter and then there's a combo box. Mine's currently set to light. I just down arrowed to dark and then hit apply and then close out that and that should have switched it over to dark mode. For you. So I would check there too. So thank you, Michael. And then Marty will come back with that plug in here shortly. Thank you, guys.
Thanks a lot, Gregory. Appreciate it. Hey, Petra.
Hi there. In answer to the question of the day, I recently got the meta glasses and I actually love them. Participants, I don't think you could do any better. They're fantastic. I use them to identify envelopes that come in the mail. I used to use an opticon, but the meta glasses are faster. And I also love Ira. I don't think you can do any better than them. I was curious to know. I wrote down the IA cast that I want to look up and listen to. Could you tell me again how I can get Cynthia Hollis's demo?
Yep. So if you want to stick with your podcast app, you can go to the ACB community podcast and then scroll way back to the middle of June. I think it was June 18 and June 21 somewhere around there. Or a faster way to get it is to go to acb media.org, find the search edit field on that page. So you can do a search and then just type in smart glasses. And you'll find both of Cindy's smart glasses, part one and part two. Their headings. Use your heading navigation to locate that and then enter on that post. And Gregory, just so you know, you are still unmuted, so we're hearing your jaws. So find that post that you want and then you hit enter on that post and that'll give you a player. So if you find the play button, that'll start playing it right there in the browser. So again, acbmedia.org, type in smart glasses.
Okay, I've got the answer to the dark mode safari question. So it's called noir, and you spell it noir. And, uh, you can search for that dark mode. And, uh, yeah, you download it. I believe it's like a dollar or something like that. And, um, it makes your safari into dark mode. So it works great. I like it a lot. For the most part, it's super, uh, accurate. There's a couple times it's a little wonky if the website is only. Is the websites already, like in a black background or something? But the only other time it gets a little bit wonky is if you come across something that the website also has, like, black text that sort of can screw you up. But if you're using a voiceover, then it doesn't really matter. So.
Perfect. Thank you, Petra. Marty and Gregory appreciate all of your guys's input. And that's noir. And it should be available in edge. I'm looking to see if I can find it by the default browser in in windows. Also, just a quick follow up on that. If you go to dark mode, you have two combo boxes. One is to set windows into dark mode, and then one is to set apps into dark mode. And you want to make sure both those are set to dark mode. Sheila, who do we got next?
Erica, 970 ending in 874. Can you tell us who you are, please? I believe that is Catherine. Hi, Michael. Hi, Katherine. Hi. To answer the question of the day, I have more than one product that I rely on so much during the day. The IRA and be my eyes and then the blind shell phone. And I also use a braille display because you always have to take notes when you're doing things. So thank you very much. Thanks a lot.
And thanks so much for your help with audible. I was able to, for the first time, I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it, and I thought I was going to lose it. And then I was able to go in and look for the book that I wanted to read and actually was able to download it onto the blind shell phone. So I was excited. And then I paired it with the JBL speaker, and mine is the one with the 3.5 plug, so I'm always charging it. And thank you very much.
Well, thank you, Katherine. And you got your play rate to go back to one. I don't know what. It didn't say one. It's still not showing me that button that you're telling me about. But by hitting the back button on the blend shell, I was able to get it to slow down. And this is before I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. And now I think it will read the poison Wood Bible in a slower voice. But I'm reading a different book now for a book club. Thank you.
As you have learned, sometimes just unplugging it and plugging it back in or uninstalling and reinstalling can solve a lot of problems. So thanks, Kathryn. Appreciate that. And thank you, Marty. Also, I appreciate both of you having this. This every week and then the podcast, too. You're welcome. Thank you. Appreciate it. You're welcome back anytime, obviously, with your tech questions. Thank you. Bye. We have a few hands in 15 minutes.
Yeah, they don't even have 15 minutes because we've got games to play with. Lady A after us. All right, well, let's go. Who do we got? Lynn Moore. Hi, guys. Hi. Hello. How are you? Good how are you? Good. Good, thank you. Good. Glad you guys are back. It was a long time. You guys were gone before we gone to convention. It was fun, though. I had fun. Yeah.
Anyway, my go to is, I would say, ira, for. And I'm curious about. So I use the Apple, the default Apple podcast player for my podcast. But I get so confused when I. If I want to play today's, you know, episode, it's fine. I can do that. But there's a podcast that I want to hear that started back in 2018, and I want to hear it from the beginning because I'm weird.
No, you're not. A lot of people go back and listen to things from kind of beginning. It's kind of like the same as streaming Netflix or Hulu or one of those. You want to go watch the series from the beginning, so, you know. Yeah, I do. Do. And we have two people that have gone back to the beginning of unmute, and I'm watching them listen to all of the episodes. 304 episodes. Yeah. And counting every week.
So. But what I'm curious about is I get really tangled up in that app and the default. I think it's confusing. And what I want to know, and I don't need any detail necessarily, I guess, but is like, I was thinking of subscribing to overcast, but that is a paid app. So I kind of want to know, is that similar to the Apple?
Oh, boy. All right, so let me just tell you, first of all, overcast is free as well as a paid version. If you do the free version, basically, you can still do all the things you would want to do without having to pay anything. There is a paid version. The paid version is $10 a year, I believe. I would not do overcast right now, unfortunately. They just released a huge update, and it is got a lot of potential, but voiceover is terrible on it. It has major problems right now. So right now, in this current state, I would not recommend going with overcast now. Hopefully, they'll improve it and it'll get better again, and that'll be great. So if you want a third party app, uh, Michael has been using. What is it you're using, Michael?
I use Castro and downcast. Those are the two apps that I can recommend right now for sure. And both of those have a free version, I'm pretty sure. So you can use those. You know, are they. But are they going to be similar to the pod, to the Apple podcast thing? I mean, they all work similarly, and I just can't figure it out or can you give me just.
They're all a little bit different in their own right. So it's going to have, you know, each developer puts their own sort of twist on how they think things should work, but they are somewhat the same, but they are also a bit different. I've been testing out the app that Michael uses, because I just. Right now, without voiceover, I can't use overcast. Really. It's pretty bad. So it's really good. You do kind of have to figure out how to navigate around a little bit because it is a little bit different due to the time restraint here. I can't really get totally into it. But if you want to shoot us an email, then I can get with you offline, message you more, if you like.
Very, very quickly. Very, very quickly. If you want to see all of the podcasts in the podcast app, for a certain show, you can go to the library tab, go to shows, pick the show you're looking for, and then go to see all. And then it has a number. And that way you could look at all the history back through episode one. In the podcast app. Yep. In which podcast app is there?
Just the default podcast. Just the default podcast app. The one that you're using right now. If you go to library, go to shows, find the show, and then see all. Thank you so much. That helps. Okay. I don't want to take up any more time. Thank you so much for your help. Yep, no problem. Good luck. Thank you. Thanks. Bye. All right, we've got about five minutes. Desi. Hey, Desi. Hey, Desi. How you doing? Hey. I'm good. How are you guys? We're good. We're good.
All right. I have. Well, first, I will tell you that my happiest accessibility thing right now is my meta glasses. I use them all the time. And while I appreciate Gregory's point, I would just say I am absolutely loving my meta glasses. And I did also have some experience with the Celeste glasses. So, anyway, neither here nor there, but. But for me, they're fabulous. And my question is, I will be moving to a new apartment in a few weeks, and I'm wanting a GPS app that will do a good job of helping me learn my new neighborhood. And I would like to be able to do one of those virtual things, but it's been a while since I've tried to do this, but when I last did, I couldn't figure out how to get a virtual like route from one place to a destination. So does anybody? Do you guys have a favorite GPS app that you're using.
My go to is blind square, so I'm used blind square. That one is a paid app. There's also a new ish app based on the soundscape code called Voice Vista. V I S T A. Yeah, I. Just downloaded that yesterday, and I have. Really, those are the two apps that I would recommend in your scenario. Any ideas about. About, if you're going to do a virtual route so that you can see how it would go?
One blind square, basically, you could literally walk out your door and turn it on, and if you don't change anything, it's just going to start telling you everything around you and how far away it is and what's on this. That and the other. One of the reasons why people love it is because of that, but it's also one of the reasons why people don't like it, because it's just so much information. If you're trying to do a route, you just want to do your route. If you don't want to know every single thing around you. So it takes a little bit of adjusting. But if you're new to a place and you want to know all the things around you, it's great for that because it just tells you everything thing.
Okay. All right. Well, thank you. I had bought blind square many years ago and haven't used it in a really long time. I think I might have to go redownload it and probably pay some extra money, but I might do that. No, I don't think for it. You don't have to pay for it again. Yay. All right, well, thanks very much, guys. Great show, as always. Yeah. Have a great day. Thank you. Three minutes. Let's do one more hand. Carla. Hey, Carla. Hey, Carla. How are you?
Great. I go blind shell and be my eyes. Okay. And two quick questions. All right. The most important one is, how can I. Is there any way to listen to the Olympics free, using my computer and without depending on my Verizon system, because they're giving me nothing but pains and my set top box doesn't work. And does anybody know. I've been through the peacock thing. I've been through going through that whole article. Does anybody have any information on that? My second quick question is, does at guys sell a transmitter that you can hook up and transmit a low power FM transmitter? So those are my two.
I don't know about listening to the Olympics. I saw your message on conversation yesterday and was going to chime in, and then I realized I don't have an answer for that, so I can try to see if I can find a way to listen to that. Or maybe Marty or Michael might have. A suggestion for you matter how you listen. Like do you care if it's on your computer, on your phone, or any of that? Or no, listen on the shell. I'll listen on a note taker. I'll listen on the computer because I.
Was going to suggest finding out what network it's on and just opening up a web browser going to that, and they're probably playing it all day because it's huge, the Olympics. So if you can find out what network is on, just search that up on your browser and I'm sure there's a way to either play it for free or listen to it there. That's where I would start. Anyway, I tried that and they're making me log in and they don't accept my cable thing for NBC. I can't listen to our local NBC.
Here's an idea for you, and I don't use it so I can't speak for it, but it looks like BBC sounds, which is available on the blind shell classic two, is streaming some or most of the Olympics. Also, according to our great friend chat GPT, NPR apparently has some coverage of major events, but not all of it. Yeah, I'm really looking for the opening and closing ceremonies, if I can get them to, you know. Yeah, I would. You too, maybe. Okay, well, YouTube makes $73.
They might be streaming it on YouTube, the big channels that are, you know. But they're making pay dollar 73. And then in the last 1 minute that we have here, Carla, I will mention we do not sell a transmitter. However, Laz over at talking MP3 players does offer a transmitter, so that might be something worth looking into as well. What's the URL for that? Talking MP3 players with an s.com dot? Thank you so much. It was nice meeting you all in Jacksonville.
Likewise. Appreciate it. And with that, I see we have several hands. Unfortunately, we do have to jump off here and if your question did not get answered, please send us an email to feedback unmute show. We'd be delighted to answer your question or bring your hands back next week. Your hands and your bodies, and we'll be glad to answer you live as well next Tuesday. Marty, you want to wrap it up?
Sure. As always, Sheila and Bell, thanks so much for all you do for us. We so much appreciate it and all of you for being here. If you guys have questions, you can always email us at feedback unmute show, and if you want to check out all of what we have going on? You can check the website, which is unmute show. We don't want to forget about Michael Doyce, who's always here helping us out and check out all the iacast stuff he's got going on over there. Everybody have a great weekend. We'll see. See you next week. Thanks, everybody.
Thanks, y'all. All right, I'm going to end it for all. Have a great week.
