Episode description

How do historians build their career, what motivates them and how they deal with professional and personal challenges? What shapes their professional path? Prof. Michael Green from the Faculty of Philosophy and History welcomes you to his podcast, where he will be inviting interesting guests to explore their stories.

Prof. Selim Karahasanoğlu is professor of history and currently the dean of the Faulty of Letters at the Istanbul Medeniyet Unviersity. Having studied in Turkish and American Universities, specialising in Ottoman history, Prof. Karahasanoğlu talks about the impact of his own family roots on his passion for history. The conversation revolves around the questions of motivation and interest in history, but also the way that academic society functions in Turkey in comparison with the United States and Germany.

Among his publications (in English):

“Ottoman Ego-Documents: State of the Art”, International Journal of Middle East Studies, 7:53, 2021.

“The Tulip Age under Consideration A Review of Can Erimtan’s Ottomans Looking West”, International Journal of Turkish Studies, 12:16, 1,2, 2010.
