Episode description

I have wanted to talk to this man for over a year and in episode #003 I was so privileged to finally talk with Big B (I would like to tell you his name but I'd have to shoot you.) Big B lives in California and is from a Latino family. He shared his experience of Latino food and what it was like growing up eating a high cab diet and how he has adapted this to a keto way of eating. He is an inspirational man who has proudly shown his incredible weight loss on his Instagram account.

We also were contacted [25:25] by someone in the low carb community about why they have had a stall in their weight loss.

He talked about many issues. I find it really interesting, actually, just trying to find out a bit more about the Latino culture and on about Mexican food, and he talked about what it was like going into low carb on the foods that he missed a little bit. But then how he managed to overcome that on what he must do to maintain his way of eating. Really fascinating guy. Great episode on really funny as well. And I hope you enjoy it. Right next I'm joined by what is known by several different names is known as big Sexy. To some, that's why he's a instagram account. Used to be called. Is now a known on instagrammers Big B underscore. Key tos appeal calling Big B. He has told me his name, so I know it's a bit of controversy. Andi. It's something that many people would like to know. But I have promised him that I won't use it, right. Brian works there is like That's not his name. They interact with this guy. What can I say? I'm talking Thio. Big, sexy queen. Exactly. Ah, he is a key to our in California. I've never met you in person, but I feel like I know you because over the last two years Hey, is bean incredibly open? Honest? He's been very human, very warm, very human in the way of his intractable people on I think that's really compass. Well, so I thought I can't just talk to the UK community. I need to talk to some people in the States as well. The first person. And the only person so fast back into is him. So welcome. Big Sexy to the podcast.

spk_0:   4:20
Thank you very much. Then I appreciate it. You have to be here. And, uh, yeah, definitely. Uh, the big, sexy moniker is still there. It's still lingering for sure.

spk_1:   4:31
That's what I say. Your view looks amazing. I know this is on the podcast, but those you can see the video clip. You've got an incredible view behind you. Anything is if you then scratch your chest. Your body disappears as well. So staying there for now. Yeah, that's the worry. Ah, good spirit. Green screen. I like it. So thank you. On the show's day, which is going to talk about your story on dhe I would like to see first we start off with your childhood. We talked about this a little bit differently when we were, you know, about our podcast and what we could talk about on Dhe. You've got very interesting kind of back story. So you tell me about your childhood experiences and you know your culture the where you come from.

spk_0:   5:10
Yeah, absolutely. So I am. Well, as far as I knew I was I was always Hispanic, But just recently I did a quick 23 note, quick, but 23 me to kind of find my ancestry. And, uh, I am about 40% Spaniard European and then about 35% Native Americans. So I do me some more. Yeah, I'm doing a lot more. Ah, investigation onto that side. You know, the Native American, Because I would have never known. It's incredible.

spk_1:   5:46
This test, isn't it? If you do want to find your your international, you're walking you n you know, just American.

spk_0:   5:53
Exactly. I mean, I I think you put it spot on. You know, I'm a walking you and I've got a little bit of everything. It's ah, it's been really cool the last couple days to kind of learn a little bit more.

spk_1:   6:05
So the Native American link, What would be really cool? I suppose you could probably find out which tribe you might have ancestry. From which culture? I mean, I'd love to learn about that person. If you come back on the future and tell us more about that, that'd be amazing.

spk_0:   6:19
Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. I think it would be. Ah, I think that would be a lot of fun, not just for me, but, you know, for anybody else out there that has thought about doing something about of that sort, I think I think it's definitely worth it.

spk_1:   6:32
Okay, so what about your Hispanic background then? So you're raising the Hispanic culture? Is that right?

spk_0:   6:38
Yes, I was. I was raised in a Hispanic culture, you know, I was born and raised in California. Um, I have grown up with a single trial. I'm a single trial. My mother is a single mother. Um, she she did everything you know, to the best of her ability. Be working late nights, providing for me and making sure that I grew up in a very stable and loving warm house. Um, I have pretty much mainly, almost all of my family in Mexico, but, um, Dina, being in the Hispanic cold training and you get have friends of the family who you look at and refer to as uncles. And so those are just my cousins. I mean, it's it's so big. And I think one of the biggest funny things about it is when you see the pictures online and it's like you know a group of 40 50 60 Hispanics at a party, and then somebody's like, Oh, yeah, just a few of them came. That's pretty much how generally it is. Really? Wow. I mean, it's it's a big thing.

spk_1:   7:47
There's like a big fat Greek wedding, but in this case Hispanic.

spk_0:   7:50
Hispanic, yes, absolutely.

spk_1:   7:53
So what about food, then? Because, you know, when I when I think about the Hispanic culture, I'm thinking about some beautiful, wonderful food on Dino. I've got Spanish friends who have wonderful food in Spain. There's incredible food in Mexico. What's the food like that you're going out with?

spk_0:   8:08
Oh, man. I mean, as as typical and as normal as this is gonna sound. There was always some sort of beans being made whether there were pinto or my personal favorite black beans. Okay, I I don't know what it is about those, but I just have always been a fanatic about black beads.

spk_1:   8:30
That must be when you taquito. Then I guess

spk_0:   8:32
Oh, man. You know, I see all the soy, the soy and all the and I'm just like, you know what? Just not really feeling it, But but no food wise growing up. I mean, we we ate everything that you could think of, you know? And of course, all of it was carps. There was always start e as being being made with breakfast or lunch. Or there's some sort of bread when I would go to Mexico and visit family, you know, after dinner, You know, 9 10 o'clock at night, you'd have your couples milk was a pastry or something, you know? Well,

spk_1:   9:10
that obviously said yes.

spk_0:   9:12
Oh, absolutely. Your

spk_1:   9:15
blood sugar is crashing with the insulin.

spk_0:   9:19
Oh, yeah. No, you You were just going down to pass that, you know?

spk_1:   9:23
So in that case, you said that you kind of grew up around Cobbs. What was your kind of preference of food? Do you prefer more savory or more sweet? And what was your relationship around?

spk_0:   9:32
Food. Did you know my relationship was Who'd was? You know, I grew up eating every scene. You know, I I never I never said Oh, I didn't like that. But my relationship with food was never more of Ah, I'm not feeling too good. I want this kind of food. It was more of Ah, I like food. So I'm gonna eat it. I was never my mother. She never was really a sweet person. And I think that transferred over to me because I'm not so much of a sleeps. I'm much more savory. Yeah, I like, uh, I like things that would have a little bit more kick. You know, spice, a little bit more seasoning stuff of that nature that had more of the bright colors. Um, there's a dish called Boy Want Omar Fatah, which is a chicken in a red tomato sauce. Right? And I mean, you could make that as mild as he wanted. Or you could put, you know, however many Serranos or how the spaniels, whatever kind of hot chill you want and blend it in. And it would just taste amazing. So imagine while love felt, I think, yeah, for me, there's got to be some sort of spice to it. In order for me to enjoy it, That doesn't go to see that I don't eat, you know, a piece of chocolate here and there. But if I had my choice, I'd rather have you know, the crispy tortilla was some refried beans on it or something of that nature.

spk_1:   11:07
So in that case, when you started Kato, you were really kind of changing for me. A cultural tradition of eating a lot of carbs. That must be important. Quite difficult for you.

spk_0:   11:16
You know what? It was more of a It was more of a mental strengths than an actual, you know, Just change. I remember I started with my ex girlfriend. She was the one that got me in Taquito, right? And I've I You know, when she started talking to me about it, it was kind of like, OK, well, I've done clean eating. I've done portion control. I've done other sorts of scenes, and I've lost some weight, but it's always never been something that it was. Wow, this is really worse. It So

spk_1:   12:00
did you ever find that you may be lost the weight and then it might come back quickly? Or is it just that you lost it? And then you stayed losing? I mean, what pre Keeter was your weight life, was it? You're going a little bit.

spk_0:   12:12
I was yo yoing. I was definitely I was doing a lot of, um, chicken and rice, you know, salmon and rice, pork and rice. I mean it was. And then some veggies. So is a good mixture of all food groups. And I was going to the gym and I was losing. I was losing weight, but it I never had that mentality. You continue. It was always good for a couple of weeks, and then I kind of like, Oh, it's a treat day. I would have some food, and then it would just continue on.

spk_1:   12:50
Yeah, I've never known a cheat day for me. B 24 hours, Unfortunately,

spk_0:   12:54
Yeah. No, um,

spk_1:   12:56
the body goes. Oh, here we go. We can now eat list again off. Be missing this. Let's go

spk_0:   13:00
for a let's exactly. And it just kind of gets back in your head. Okay? We're back to this now. We're good. Yeah. Um but it was It was definitely kind of ah, more of a body shock than the culture shock, because I would still be able to eat some of the fruits that I grew up with. Just you had to tweak it a little bit brighter, okay? And I always watched my mother cook. I I was always in the kitchen, was her, seen what she was doing, and that first day that we started, we emptied out our fridge in our pantry, and we went to the store and bought about $400 worth of Kato food.

spk_1:   13:48
You know what? I love the fact you say that because I've always said to my wife, Bessemer, when I start Tito, do it properly. They feel like you're denying yourself, but rather embrace Skeeto. Spend your money, fill up your fridge so that actually you've got lots of Tito auctions, so you feel like you. Actually, it's a celebration for me. I'm a big meaty to anyway, So I suddenly feel like buy a nice cut of meat by some roast. You know, some beef to roast or some lamb really go to town on a lovely meal with a lovely, creamy source and really enjoy it, because that way you think this isn't hard to not die. It's It's just a different way of teaching, which I'm enjoying

spk_0:   14:23
exactly. And and that was always one of my things that I learned, you know, along the way it's your not so much restricting yourself for going like you said on a diet. It's just you're gonna change the way you eat? You know, you might not eat this anymore, but you can have a little bit more of that. And it just it helped because, like you said, we went out. We spent $400 but we got all this really good food that we would normally eat. But now we were eating it a different way. We weren't adding anything more to it. From that moment on, it was like nothing I had ever seen before. Wait, drop being wise.

spk_1:   15:03
And I've seen your transformation photos because you've shared them over the last two years on it is incredible, isn't it? I mean, you seem let you lost so much weight, and you seemed much happier and healthier. I remember some of the things you shared were really personal about, you know, this this change in your life and what it meant to you.

spk_0:   15:20
Oh, yeah. No, I mean, I just very recently I was comfortable enough to actually show a fool picture without a shirt, you know, bearing pretty much something that I would have never done.

spk_1:   15:38
And can I just say that? Why? And I saw that picture in your instagram feed on. I thought Wow, that was amazing. And I thought, Why is he not on the show already? Well, to be fair, I don't need to recorded, I think wanting to you by then. But I decided, right. We've got to get you on because that was so incredibly was. This is not brave, but you made yourself potentially vulnerable. I think when people do that, actually, they have strength because you own it then, don't you? You're saying I'm controlling control of this? I'm gonna show you something about myself. I'm gonna be in control of showing it to you on Dhe know we can have a go at you. All they can do is have admiration, I think. And that's what I saw from that picture. So it well done to you.

spk_0:   16:15
Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. No, it it was definitely a struggle. You know, it, I I can tell you in full honesty that I I kept going back and forth for a couple days before I finally he just said, You know what? Go for it. Put it out there. You know, one of the things that I've talked to some people about and I've had some people come to me and I've gone to some people. There are still some people out there that are in the shadows that don't really come out a lot. They'll see your stories. You'll notice who they are. You know they're on their way on whatever kind off journey, health journey. But they might not have that inner strength yet to kind of full fledged give it their all right. So sometimes we have to be the ones to be a voice for other people and vice. First

spk_1:   17:05
off, I love the anything I want this podcast to be us or the community around the world saying, Look, we're on the same boat may have had different reasons for coming to this decision. We, maybe somebody might be type two diabetic. Some of us might be trying to deal with our weight or health issues in other ways, but actually, you know what? We're not alone. I think of anything. That's what I feel from Instagram. That's why I feel from your accounts and hope for this podcast and do the same on make. You'll realize that we can talk about these things openly. There's no shame. It's only about strength and support on this one. A check When you say you put that picture up of you just the other day with your top off. What was the reaction? What sort of messages did you get back from people?

spk_0:   17:46
Nothing but positivity. Uh, I'm and it's it was hard to to see and realize that people that I had never met before in my life people that I haven't met people that I don't really talk to you on a regular basis are congratulating me are be so appreciative and supporting. Yeah, yeah, and and And who I am now in what I was before and what I am becoming, you know, it's it's it's that sort of family that you get when you all are on the same page. Like I said, whether it's Kato low carb carnivore, you know, vegan, whatever it is. Whatever your choices were all on that same boat of getting healthier,

spk_1:   18:48
I feel like we all feel a cz. Well, I don't speak for everybody, but I suddenly feel for me. I feel more like I'm eating the way that my body wants to eat. And that's amazing to when you feel like your body is doing what it's place today and you can see success. And that's the nice thing is as well, You know, you're in a further stage of the journey, then somebody starting, but they can think, Oh, hang on a minute. Maybe I've got a similar issue. Even I want to try to deal. So on my way to my health and they can see how you have done so before them. And that's inspiring. You can get more inspiring than a success

spk_0:   19:17
story exactly. And that was And that's, you know, also true for me, because I know that there's a few out a hell of a lot of people out there much farther than me, and I look at them for inspiration. I looked for them for motivation, so I mean, it all comes full circle. So what

spk_1:   19:37
about exercise now? Then what is it you do an exercise routine? Do you get to the gym very regularly or walk or run or whatever.

spk_0:   19:45
So lately I've been doing a lot of walking. Um, I've been doing a lot of kind of like evening walks when when the sun goes down, my work schedule has been a little up and down, so I normally would go to the gym after work, you know, during the week. So five days a week, Um, and I have a very close friend of mine who is pretty much my brother since elementary school. And he's being extremely instrumental and training me, getting me into the dream and just helping me achieve what I want. All right,

spk_1:   20:24
Frank contest. So important, isn't it? You

spk_0:   20:27
know, absolutely.

spk_1:   20:28
You go into this box

spk_0:   20:29
he's been, you know, in shape in the gym for, you know, 567 years. So he knows what he's doing until having that kind of of support. Like you said, that mentality of someone who knows what they're doing knows your limitations right now but still pushes you is beyond, you know, there's no no repaint someone for that.

spk_1:   20:51
Yeah. Perfect. Okay, so in that case, two questions. Really? Well, the 1st 1 is what your goals now moving forwards. Where'd you want to go in the next? Well, first your life. Really? What? Your goals in terms of health

spk_0:   21:06
goals in terms of house is Well, I can tell you that I've achieved one of my goals already, and that was good in I I was, ah, diagnosed pre diabetic, borderline diabetic about three years ago. And just very recently, I was officially cleared no longer. So, yes, I was brilliant. That alone was like the biggest cherry on top for me. You know, I was no longer in danger of doing that. So that alone helped me and pushed me toe toe. Continue what I was doing. Pardon my

spk_1:   21:51
ignorance for a second, but I suddenly realized, if you have Type two diabetic in the States, that's a very different situation we have in this country where, you know, health care here is completely free. So if I was diabetic and I needed insulin, then they would be provided by the National Health Service. And my wife's a doctor on she's oncologist. And she said she found out once about the cost of treatments in chemotherapy, and you'd be shocked by how expensive it is. But I guess even America, if you have a disease a chronic disease like that, would you have to pay for yourself? Or I guess your insurance company would help with that in some way with

spk_0:   22:27
a your insurance company would help, depending on severity, I believe. But it would still be some costs that you would have to cover a CZ. Well,

spk_1:   22:38
wow. So that could be not only a diagnosis, which you carry thirsty life, but also a bill. You gotta carry your life regardless of exact How much money you on or anything. That's just so you'd have to pay out.

spk_0:   22:49
Exactly. And, uh, I I definitely I'm I don't get into into the whole politics thing, But I think that the sicker you are, the more money others are going to make. So when you start getting better and taking care of yourself, that's when people start losing money.

spk_1:   23:08
Yes. Yeah, really? Said on the next day was gonna ask you about Waas. What are your words of wisdom to somebody who's either starting Tito and low carb? Or maybe there's somebody who's had a few issues with it or they stumble a little bit. What? Your words of wisdom. What's the thing that you teach them to help them get through this?

spk_0:   23:29
I have a couple answers to this question. One is you know, we're all given the same 24 hours in a day. Whatever we choose to do within those 24 hours is gonna be what separates us from everybody else. Whether you're starting out whether you've been on it for the year, two years a week, this is not just a quick fix distance a lifestyle. This is This is a complete Give it your all. You You want to make sure that at the end of the day you're happy. Nobody. Nobody can take that away from you. Nobody can take your happiness away from you except you. And don't be afraid. All the all the scary things will always be scary. But it doesn't matter where. Our own light in the darkness we will. We will make it. We just got to keep going.

spk_1:   24:22
I love that mindset is everything, isn't it? I think Yeah. I feel like you're gonna fail in some way. Then you might. You're more likely to I believe that. I think if you have a positive mindset or you have the idea you're pushing for it. Unless it's in my own life with my business, with my jobs in the past, with my family. If I change my mind set, which is what I'm in control off. Then you see, the future is so much different. What? It could have bean Because I feel like I put everything into it on. Good things happen.

spk_0:   24:52
Yeah, absolutely. You gotta You gotta have that strong mindset. You got to know that there are gonna be there is going to be days where you're gonna fail and that's normal by, uh, you get yourself back up and you continue one

spk_1:   25:06
good. I love that big. Be love it. So we've had some correspondence gonna move now. Thio Beautiful can right into the show. Ask question share comments reverently reviews is yet, but I'm sure we'll do very soon. Someone's written this comment here. Um, they just paraphrase It was quite a long email effectively A lost quite a bit of weight over the last few months on. They felt really good about it'll. Unfortunately, they seem to have stalled now for the last 67 weeks. They haven't changed in any way what they've been doing. They are intermittent fasting on the fairly strict on their key toe. But they're big, confused us. The water could have this stool. Is that any advice? That asking that we could give or experiences we could share about if we store in our weight loss what we think we should do or what we think we should advise them to do. So about that question. Then what do you think about that? What do you think about this question about stalling and wait? Let's not continuing as they expected.

spk_0:   26:08
Well, you know it like anything, at least in my in my experience as we're losing weight as we're as our body are starting, is starting to to get accustomed to what we're doing. Like any senales. Once you get into a routine, it becomes almost like a monotone. Kind of saying is just repeating. So maybe if you are working out, change your workouts. Oh, I know some people that I follow will do a carbo load, you know, they'll take a day, Will. They will consume, you know, more carbs than usual just to kind of get their body back into gear. Um, and also I know this is kind of Ah Harting for for quite a few people, but cutting out certain things, whether it's a dairy product, even sweeteners, you know, sugar free sweeteners. If you drink coffee in the morning. You know, just finding little things to cut or adding more protein if if you're, you know, working out a lot at some more protein. Yeah, things like that will help. But make sure that you're switching things up because once your body gets accustomed to it, you'll you'll begin to stone. The weight loss will slow down immensely.

spk_1:   27:37
So this is I agree with that, and I think that far too long there have been certain slimming agencies, which have kind of describe the body as if it's some sort of mechanical machine or a robot almost like you put in this many calories, you'll get this much result. And, of course, that's been proven to be completely rubbish because the body is you said does adapt. It does change, it adapts to its situation. If you want to try a treadmill, you've never done it before. Your body will be allover the place. Funny it very hard to cope. You do that every day for a month. By the end of month, your body will adapt to me, absolutely find it doing it on. I think in the same way you're saying they're about weight loss. Your body isn't a machine. It sometimes has to regulate itself. But the thing I think is most important is that the body is able to make itself healthier on even if you're not losing weight. And you might be doing key turned low carb to lose weight. But here, if you're not losing weight, I still believe your body is becoming healthy. Maybe it's repairing itself. The weight loss from is always really beneficial. Side effect is not necessarily the main thing. You're going for the primary goal, I don't think. But of course, over years, if you keep up the routines, if you keep at it day in, day out, all those little times, every bite you take every exercise you have. Over time, the pattern will be the overall. I think you would have lost weight. It's just you might not see it this week. You might see it next week. You might see it this month. You might see it next year. You don't know, but I'd take it going because ultimately it's about being healthy. And if you can have a healthy relationship with food as well that I think you're winning on, I would rather be healthy with more weight. But knowing event shelf for you loser as well.

science. It could be size. Um, you know it, Yeah. Measuring your your biceps, your your stomach your your size. You know, just doing simple measurements. You'll see where you're losing, and I can guarantee you the skill might still say that you weigh the same, but your body will not. Your body needs not like

spk_1:   29:50
right The matter times have done this. Where I don't weigh myself now I used to about six months ago was the last time I weighed myself on. I remember clearly thinking to myself, I've not lost anyway whatsoever. I've gone down two notches on my belt, but I've not lost any weight. What's happened? And it's just the way your body reconfigures itself about. Weighing yourself is a very arbitrary wear of trying to measure weight loss. Really, it's more about healthier body and how your shape changes. I love that you love it exactly. Well, Bob is but all of them again of giving away the name.
