Most of us have heard the story of "The Lone Survivor" and the battle that took place during Operation Red Wings. I have been told by multiple individuals to dig deeper into the story because there are too many holes and too much Hollywood. I put it off for a while but decided to take a deep dive into the now famous incident which led to the deaths of 19 servicemen.
Bass Reeves was a deputy U.S. Marshal, gunfighter, farmer, scout, tracker, railroad agent, and a runaway slave. He was one of the first African-American Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River, mostly working in the deadly Indian Territory. Reeves made up to 4,000 arrests in his lifetime, killing twenty men in the line of duty.
Lance Sijan was an all American kid. He excelled on the football field and had aspirations to earn the coveted title "Fighter Pilot." After attending the Air Force Academy in the early 1960s he advanced to flight training, eventually piloting F4 Phantoms over the perilous skies of Vietnam. On November 9th 1967, he was shot down where his amazing story of survival and escape began.
