The use of prescription medical marijuana in NSW has been legal since 2016, when the bill was first introduced allowing for its legal growth for medicinal and scientific purposes. Despite medicinal marijuana being legal for use, driving with it present in your system or while under the influence is still a crime. There is no defence for it being prescribed.
We spoke with Dr Thomas Arkell, a researcher from Swinburne University who is looking into the effects of medicinal cannabis on cognition and how it can influence driving.
