¶ Escaping Primm and Immediate Pursuit
Take shelter behind the rocks. These people can't keep going. We've been on our feet all day. Grant, we have to get up this hill or we're sitting ducks. Rest after! Will we even be able to? That's our best possible position for cover! One last push and we're almost there! Dot! Dot! I got you! Dot, help me carry her! That's not too bad. Small alteration on the leg. Get her on the truck with the other injured. I know, it's full. Grant! Coming!
You and you can you handle getting her in there? I Can't we're all tired, but please we have to help each other out. I got a grant. I got her The boar's animals are not giving up, are they? Why would they? We took away Prim's entire workforce. Everyone who has a gun, spread out and take position on the ridge. Find cover and dig in. Only shoot when you have a target. This is our chance to push them back. Our people can't hit anything, Alex. It's pitch black out here.
Focus on the headlights. Try to stop the vehicles. I'll try. There's just so many of them. Or you could just aim for the drivers. Todd. Glad you brought Gloria. Don't know what we'd do without you. She does have better equipment. Still a hell of a shot. That's nothing. Well, it's definitely working. They're turning around! Good timing. I'm out of rounds. Should probably have the others stop shooting, too. I didn't bring that much ammo. Hold your fire! Hold your fire!
And it's not like they're hitting anything anyway. But now the boar's animals know we can shoot. We have them outnumbered and holding a higher position. Maybe that'll be enough. Gone? Who, them? Yeah, for now. The boar will never give up that easily. As much as she prides herself on building Prim, these are the people that actually did it. And without her...
Slave labor. There'd be no way for her to keep the arenas or any of her gambling rings going. She has nothing now. Once the sun's up, they'll be back. The mountains and darkness just bought us more time. And those were only some of her trucks. She has other stronger stuff. Armored Hummers and even tanks. I bet those will be next. She's desperate enough. At least they're slower and... We got a head start. Where'd she get all that? No idea. Republic, maybe? Stole or bought them? Who knows?
I wasn't there long enough. It seems like she's made a lot of connections through her little games in prim. Once she regroups, she's going to throw everything she has at us. Then we need to be gone before then.
¶ Planning Route, Defenses, Threats
How much further is it to get to this spot we're going? Are you sure it's going to be safe? The Atlas is the safest place left in any reasonable distance. But we're only about halfway there. Half? That's it? I don't know if you've noticed, but I doubt many of these people are going to make it. If it's that far. Then those who don't, don't. You're lucky to have some place to go to at all.
Oh, really? What she means is we will have casualties along the way, but we don't have any other choice. How many would be killed if we were to suddenly turn around or give up? This is the only option we have. You're probably right. Look, no matter what, we're going to try and help as many people get to the Atlas as possible, right? That's the plan. And the boar isn't our only problem.
We can't forget what else might be out here. Oh, shit. You think infected are gonna attack too? We're so focused on the board, I didn't stop to think about them. Hmm. Infected may not be an issue. I've crossed these mountains and deserts before and haven't seen many. It's pretty barren out here. There's not much to eat, so even they wouldn't survive. Maybe not, but I for sure saw one real nasty infected when Dot and I first escaped Prim.
A special kind from L.A. Coal. Pitch black skin, strong as hell. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it followed us out here. You're serious. Oh, God. Can this get any worse? Dot. Okay. Okay. You're right. We should keep that to ourselves. These people are freaked out as it is. I just wanted to make sure you all know. Okay, okay, I will. That sounds like a good plan. Thanks Alex. You'd think these people would be working harder to save themselves. I mean, come on.
Dot! They've already been through so much already. You have no idea. I'm risking my neck and giving up my home to all these people. I know, I know. It's a lot for you, too. But they're grateful. Everyone is just exhausted and stressed. I'm sorry. I just... I can't even remember a time when I had to deal with this many people. I've been alone for so long. Duh. Oh, these? These are NVGs. Night vision goggles. Can you actually see anything from here?
It's a little hard at this distance, but looks like they've retreated all the way back to the main highway. But there are more headlights even further, way in the distance heading towards them. Could be the heavy armor Grant was talking about. The boar isn't going to be as careless after she just lost a bunch of her trucks. Ammo has to be limited for them, too. With what just happened in Prim, she knows we're on foot. They aren't.
They'll wait for the morning to try to round everyone up. This boar. What's she like? Bad. Just look around. Evidence enough. Great. Well, come morning, we're not going to have anywhere to hide from her, and nothing that will stop armored vehicles from coming up here. Yeah, I was thinking that. Could lay some traps.
I have plastic explosives in the truck, but that'd be tricky to place and may only take out a few. Any other ideas? You know this land better than anyone, right? They're shining the light on the map, but keep it covered. Okay. Since we're on foot, our best bet is to stay in the rocky terrain. See, this here, this is Spirit Mountain. And the range continues all the way down to the Colorado River. And that's...
where we'll cross. Wait, what? Through the water? Again? Dot, dot. No, no, no, no, no, shh. There's a small dam and some walking trails that will make it hard for anything to follow us that isn't on foot. Why don't we just send our truck ahead with the injured, and hopefully they won't notice it. That might work. Look, there's some rough areas once we cross the river that they won't be able to drive over as well.
We just need to make sure to avoid the abandoned towns, because there's some infected still there. Dot? That's not too bad. We could keep them off our backs till then. Yeah, but the hills eventually run out. There's flatlands, mostly after that, the Golden Valley. That's where the boar could catch up to us. How close will we be to the Atlas by then? Not far, but I mean, these people, come on, on foot?
That's still a long ways to go. So then we have to find a way to hold them off before the valley. I mean, if they have tanks and armored hummers coming, even if we had unlimited rounds, which we don't. It wouldn't matter against those. What if we took out the road to buy some time? Can we blow the dam? Uh, yeah. No. I don't have enough explosives for that.
But if I remember correctly, wait, there's a place called Union Pass on the other side of the river that they're forced to go through. And the road gets pretty narrow. And it has two big rock formations on both sides. Explosives in the right spots. It could work. Buy us enough time to get to the Atlas. Maybe. Hey, it's something.
Worth a shot, right? Dot? Yeah. There's one other thing that you may not have considered. What's that? The Atlas missile silo is hidden enough being underground and was designed to keep infected out. But if the boar discovers it... Seeing where all these people are getting in, there'd be nowhere to hide after that. Then we do everything we can to hold them off. Rough terrain, blowing up Union Pass, whatever it takes, this has to work.
We're gonna make it. Yeah, boy, I wish I had your confidence. The only chance we have is if we make it there tomorrow. That's a long way in a difficult trail. You better get your rest. Night. Oh, man. Work? Yeah. We totally got this. We do have this, right? Uh-huh. After all we went through, all ready to get here, our luck better hold out. Hey, I... I gotta keep watch. At least for a little while. But you can get some rest. I'll be fine. I'm used to riding on no sleep. Diet.
Does get pretty chilly out here, doesn't it? Uh-huh. Oh, oh, hey, um, oh, trying to share warmth? Yeah. Cold? Well, here. At least let me adjust against the rock. And move my body up. There. Okay. That's better. Kind of nice view from up here. It'd be even nicer if there weren't people down there trying to kill us. You think... Do you think the others are okay? You think they made it out of prim? John... Yeah. Yeah. Probably did. Who knows?
Maybe they made it back to Westport by now. You know, I give Nick shit, but he can handle himself. Pretty damn resourceful. Or lucky. I'm sure he's fine.
¶ Flight Begins, Plane Details, Past
flip that back Help him, Nokoma. Come on. It's just turbulence. We're fine. Are you sure? It doesn't feel like we're going to be fine. My hands. My hands. This doesn't feel right, Nick. This doesn't feel right. Nokoma, can you lift your arms yet? Can you take over as pilot? Not so much. Dart's still working. Just fight it the best that you can. Will, just focus. And breathe, okay? We can't lose Barra.
Is the other plane still on the radar? Fuck, it looks like they're getting further away. I can barely see them now. We'll push the right button top on the center screen. Uh, that? Oh, here, got it. You may want to buckle up in the back, Nick. Don't worry about me, okay? Just focus on flying. Find Vince's plane. Okay, we're trailing behind, but we haven't lost him.
Their transponder's still on. Look. Can he shut it off? Hopefully he won't. Wait, is ours on? Nope. Had you turned it off before takeoff. Thought ahead. Oh, right. That makes sense. Nice thinking. Wait, so he doesn't know that we're following him, right? May not. We're pretty far behind. Okay. There. There, the plane's getting smoother. You're doing great. Well, okay, you got this, okay? You want to take the controls? I don't know if I could keep this up. Look at my hands. Nick!
You want to pull me out of the co-pilot seat? I'm just sitting here. No, you stay there, okay? I have no idea how to do that. Besides, I'm tired as shit. This has been one long-ass day. I mean, Will's doing better than I ever would. Oh, boy. Okay. If you say so, just not feeling like my best self. I mean, isn't there an autopilot or something? Sure. If we knew where we were going.
Well, as far as planes go, we were pretty lucky to find this one still on the runway back in Prim. Yeah, no kidding. It's a pretty swanky jet back here. Were all the planes like this in the old days? Nah, this one was private. Someone would have owned it before the outbreak. Well, whose is it now? Some rich gambler. This isn't even the nicest jet I've seen fly in.
Westport doesn't have many planes. Where would the gambler even get the fuel? Republic refineries. How am I not surprised? Anything useful back there? Um... Just... Just a few bags. Some clothes. Nothing special, really. No weapons? Doesn't look like it. Damn! Yeah, I know. We'll have to figure something out. I still have some darts. What's...
Left of them. But Vincent fucking took my blowgun. Without that, they don't work? Pretty much useless. I mean, I still have my Mata pistol, but I'm all out of cartridges. I could make some with the right tools, but not much use to us now. So, we've got nothing. Great! Hey, at least they got a fridge back here. with some water here Nikoma drink something it might help you're gonna have to hold the bottle right right here
Sorry, sorry, sorry. Thanks. Here, why don't we make this easier? This one has a straw. Just put the bottle in your pocket and... Presto. I feel ridiculous. Well, good. You look it, too. Um, uh, presto. Uh, what's that? Some, uh, magician saying. I heard it once in an old movie. Huh. Yeah, I'm still getting used to your slang. You know what, Will? When we get a chance, I can start catching you up. Welcome to the outside world. This is not easy.
Keep pushing fluids, Nakoma. That should help with the toxins or whatever, right? Yeah. There's a bag of apples and pears in the back, too. For your in-flight meal. Not bad. Oh, good. Yeah, I was starting to get hungry. What now? It's nothing. Well, flip windshield L and R under anti-ice. Uh, got it.
Yeah, it was getting hard to see. How do you know how to do this stuff, Nakoma? It's pretty rare to find someone who can fly anymore. I was a supply runner for the boar. After I was a contender, but before I was a trapper. You were? What did you haul? This and that. By plane or helicopter, depending on the distance. Every so often I had to travel to get some more toxins for the darts, for myself or the boar.
Those frogs that you were talking about? Mm-hmm. Where do you keep those? It's gotta be someplace special. Can't say. Only I know. Collateral. Exactly. You die, and no one gets to use your darts anymore. Uh-huh. Kept me useful. Which kept me alive. Well, once you, uh, aren't useful, you're disposable.
¶ Confronting Past, Pursuit Details, Crisis
I know what that's like. Do what you have to, whatever the cost. Yeah, like capturing more people who are disposable. Not every choice is an easy one. But I'm trying to make things right. I am here now, aren't I? Yeah, only because I carried you. I'd be here regardless. I helped you get out of the stadium, didn't I? And now look at how far I'm going. She did help a lot to get us here. Yeah, whatever, Will. Just focus on flying. Just look at it all. So many farms and buildings.
I mean, I can't even begin to imagine... Down there? A bunch of dead cities. A few scattered pockets of people who managed to survive, but mostly skeletons of what it used to be. Still, even then, what are these places like? I've read books about other locations, but never really seen anything outside of Prim. This is all new. Very weird and kind of scary. Our time with the boar is over. There's no way she'd catch us now, right? Not much of a chance.
You think she died back in Prim? I doubt it. She'd have a plan. She always does. She has a hell of a lot of other things to focus on now rather than us. Besides, we're hundreds of miles away by now. How far do you think Vincent's going? Where is he taking Vera? There's no way to know. Only that his plane's currently headed...
East-south-east-ish? You think they're headed all the way past the Mississippi to the UA? I mean, maybe. United America does have a lot of airstrips. Wait, can they go that far? I mean, can we? Maybe. We have to know more about our plane for one. Uh, check behind my seat. I think I saw a book or manual about that. Oh, got it. Cessna Citation look inside for the spec sheet page should say range on it Found it says 1530 nautical miles
What does that mean? Look, we just needed to go further than Vincent and Vera, right? So, how far can they go? Well, did either of you get a look at what kind of jet they took off in? I was more focused on not swallowing my tongue. I mean, before you choked me out, I was close to it, but I don't know shit about planes. It looked kind of like ours. Maybe a little bigger? Can you tell anything from the transponder, Will? Uh, yeah, I guess.
Kind of, but I didn't want to say anything. What does that mean? Speak English. Uh... Vincent's in a faster plane. The distance between us has been growing. Wait, are we gonna lose him? A faster plane. And if it looked bigger on the runway, I'm betting they're built to go further. Damn it! Don't... Tell me that, okay? Can we do anything? Every plane has a small reserve of fuel. May push a little further than what the manual says, but I don't know how far.
As it is, we still have to see where they land. That'll be hard enough. We...
¶ Mid-Flight Pilot Swap and Injury
Okay, we may need to start thinking about alternatives. Oh, boy. If we come up short, there's a chance we'll end up landing in the Republic. Could that be where Vincent's going? I mean, I don't know. I would need to check the GPS and do some math and triangulation and oh shit!
Easy. Easy. Okay, okay, okay, okay. If you want me to figure it out, I need someone to take the controls. So I gotta move out of this co-pilot seat. Nick! Me? Um, gee, I don't know about that. Better you than me. I'm barely hands and fingers over here. All right, give me your water. You're gonna have to take it. You ready to move? Yep. This is all you, sorry. Whatever. Three...
To matter just go Well easy easy she will watch her feet on the control I'm trying this was so weird. You should try it. Yeah, no. Thank you. It sucks. I remember it You alright? I'm not that heavy. I'll be fine. Just stay there. You're not alright. Your arm's bleeding. That, I'm okay. Don't worry about it. There's a first aid kit in the back of the cockpit. Thanks. Is it bad? Just focus on flying. All right, Will? I'm focusing on you. When is bleeding like that not a big deal? Uh, is it...
¶ The Shocking Secret Revealed
Is it from what happened in the stadium? Well, I don't know what you're talking about, okay? Let's just take care of this, and then we'll swap out. What happened in the stadium? I didn't want to bring it up, but I have been a little worried. Nick, what is he talking about? Nick! It's nothing, okay? Then let me see. No, you don't need to. What happened to him? What do you know? I, uh, uh, I can't say. You're gonna make me dart your ass and look myself?
When I can I'm fine obviously then why would you try to hide it? Oh You were bit Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors. ¶ Immunity Claims and Alvin's Map
We continue with Descendants. You were bit. Land this plane. Let me the hell off. Fuck. Fuck. Will, why did you say anything before? I didn't want to say it. It doesn't matter, okay? The hell it doesn't. We don't have much time. Will, listen to me. He may not look infected, but he could still be a slow turner. I'm not that either. How could you know? Because. Because why? Because I'm immune. Bullshit. No one is. My father was.
Same as my grandma, and I guess... I guess I am too. You guess? I saw it happen. When Nick was bitten, Alvin watched too. He said he heard about people that were... You know, but it's unbelievably rare. It's why Alvin wanted me to go to you, because you were special. Did he, huh? That's why you came. Well, I mean, I didn't know...
I didn't know what else to do. Things were getting out of hand. And Prim, then he told me all that and that he wanted me to take you to some director. And then Alvin obsessed about his papers, made me take the scans with me. I have no idea. what any of this meant, but all of that was what led me to you, and now we're here. Alvin was always a little crazy. What's crazy is you actually believe that shit.
¶ Nakoma Flies Alone, Will Struggles
Nick's gonna turn on us at any moment! Well, if it comes to that, good thing I'm strapped in. Now, what do I need to do, Will? Just take the steering thing? The sticks? And sure. Nakoma, how do I switch it over? You two are unbelievable. Well, not much you can do about it right now, can you? Don't remind me. How do I transfer control? You better be ready to switch it back. Does this plane have a parachute? From this height, wouldn't matter. Great. Center switch below your elbow. Got it. Easy.
Uh, now up and down goes... Yeah, you got it. Yeah, alright, alright, alright. I played a video game once that was like this, so it doesn't seem too difficult. So long as I don't have to mess with all of these buttons. No need. Now, hold it steady and keep Vincent's plane right where it is now in the windshield. Just give me a few minutes. I need to play with the GPS and do some math and just give my hands a rest. Fuck, fuck. Um, Doc.
I can barely see the blinky lights of the plane now. You really trust that he's not going to turn on you, Will? I mean, I've seen people turn in the arenas before. It's never been like this. He's either gifted or damn lucky. Yeah, lucky. Let's say you are, like, immune. Does anyone else know? No. No one knew for sure. I didn't even until now. Everyone around me tried to keep it a secret, along with anything that involved my dad or my grandma.
You know for a fact they were bit and never turned? Never turned. Anyone else besides them? Not that I've ever heard of. Figure it's hereditary. Something in me that's... Special. That's why Alvin wanted to take you to the director person. Maybe they would know more. He did draw me a map, but I can't even begin to read this. Here, let me see.
All of his other notes he gave me were gibberish, so I mean... Alvin drew this? Ink's writing was clear. Oh my god, I know. No clue where that map even begins. Not that it matters anyway. Alvin was part of some crazy cult. I'm sure as hell not falling for this trap. The only thing I'm focusing on right now is getting Vera back. Why would Vincent take her at all? What would be the point? Uh huh.
One minute he's playing nice on our side, next minute he sends a dart in my neck. Two-Face is what he is. Yeah, I'm having a real hard time seeing a difference between the both of you. Well, I never lied to you. Oh, that I know of. You want to talk? Hiding an infected bite? That's like the worst thing someone can do right there. Oh, coming from someone who sold slave for a living? Guys, guys, please. I had no choice.
I am so sick and tired of you throwing that back in my face. Oh, I will never let you forget what you did. Not after what you... Not after what happened to Lisa. Don't for a minute think that I forgot. I loved her. And now I have to live with that too. I know what I did. I'm trying to make up for it. You know, no matter what you try to do, nothing will ever bring her back. I know! God damn it! I can't! I can't do it!
Will, Will, just breathe, man. Take it easy. I really wish I could. I really do. I just, I gotta get out of this chair. I have to. Look what you did. What I did? Wait, Will, Will, don't go. I can't. I can't do this by myself. I'm sorry. Shit. Shit, now it's just me. Alone. All you have to do is hold it steady. Nothing else. Don't start freaking out. I'm not freaking out, okay? Could have fooled me. Look, what's wrong with him?
He's been acting funny for a while, since before we even took off, but now it's getting worse. He's all sweaty, too. Oh, man. Is he infected? Is he the one we should be worried about? Doesn't seem like it. What, airsick, maybe? No. I've seen people like this before. Sweating, shaking, jittery. You know what he is? In withdrawal. Wait, from what? Drugs? Where would he even get those? The boar. Another one of her little side hustles. She peddles stardust. What's stardust?
A mixture of things. Very big high. She liked to control her people. I wouldn't doubt she'd give that to Will. Damn. Poor guy. So... His medicine that he was talking about. Uh-huh. I'm, uh... I'm so sorry. I really am. I just... It's okay. Sit down. Drink some water. Okay. Maybe Nick can put it in your pocket. Get you a little straw, too. Why not a fancy little umbrella while we're at it? You haven't had any in a while, right? No, I haven't. I heard you talking. Was it Stardust?
Yeah. Oh, man. I'm sorry. Well... I didn't ever think it was gonna be this hard. I can't even hold the pen straight. Hey, yes, sir. Sorry, I got the plane. You just sit over there and take a break. No, no, I need to do this now. Toss me the pen and paper. Yeah, let's go. Okay, okay, yeah. This ain't like driving. I gotta... I gotta use two hands. And the flight manual, too. Might be helpful. Anything else? This shouldn't take long. I mean...
If my hands would just hold still, at least this is giving me something to focus on. Hey, hey, hey. It's all good. All good. Just a little bump in the road. You know, I got this. I got this. Well...
¶ Vincent's Destination Revealed
Maybe not totally blind. Why? You got something? What I believe is their flight path. Whoa, no shit. You know where they're going? It's been... fairly consistent since we started tracking them. There's been no major deviations. This path doesn't line up with any major airstrip in the Republic or the UA, as far as I can tell. You sure? Then where are they going? I may be wrong, but I figure it's somewhere in here.
There's an entire state between the UA and the Republic that's still in the red zone. It used to be called Louisiana. That's in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, I know. Why the hell would Vincent take her there? God, this is a pain in the ass. On. Our. Way. Now. Finally sent.
¶ Vera Awakens and Confronts Vincent
Manual transmissions are the worst. What? Where? What the hell? How did I... Oh, hey, you! You're finally awake back there. I'd offer you some in-flight service, but I'm a little busy in the cockpit. Vincent, damn it! What the hell have you done? Where's Nick? He's fine. Or at least he was when I left him on the runway back in Prim. Pretty sure they would have made it out, but that was many miles ago. Holy shit. No! Let me go! Why are you doing this?
I'll untie you once we get there. Didn't want you waking up and hurting yourself. Or me. I mean, someone's got to fly this thing. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight. Vincent, why? I trusted you. Still should, Vera. I'm doing this for you. For me? Where the hell are you taking me? Home. I'm taking you home. To your real family. To be continued in the next episode of We're Alive, Descendants.
