On December 21, 1946, Eugene Talmadge, the governor-elect of Georgia, died before beginning what was to be his fourth nonconsecutive term. For the next few weeks after that, three men served as the state's governor: Herman Talmadge (Eugene's son), Ellis Arnall, and Melvin Thompson.
