Mindful preparation for an eclipse with loving kindness

Without exaggeration, the nation has been preparing for the April 8, 2024, total eclipse for several months. Texas is one of the states on the path of total eclipse. An estimated “12 million people in Texas live in the path of totality, the most of any state.” (Fox4news.com). An eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly in front of the sun and casts a shadow on the earth’s surface, a truly awe-inspiring event. Schools in states along the path of the eclipse will be closing for the safety of children. The concern is that children may glimpse at the eclipse with unprotected eyes. In addition, millions of travelers seek to witness the world in person and travel to states where they can get the best view. Because of the expected peak in tourists, schools are closing, so school traffic will not contribute to the projected traffic congestion. From a mindfulness perspective, I invite you to join me in discovering a mindfulness perspective, using mindfulness qualities to prepare for an eclipse. The qualities of curiosity and having a beginner’s mind can be eclipsed by compassion and gratitude. Using loving kindness that brings safety to protect the curious and the beginner mind mindfulness qualities. The glasses of loving kindness filter compassion and gratitude to reveal beauty before an eclipse, during the eclipse, and after an eclipse. It also brings an awareness we can appreciation where we are at right now and savor throughout time.
