Terry McMillan is one the most famous and successful writers of her time because she knows how to really connect with her audience. And the reason why she understands how to do that is because she knows how to make great characters and she knows how to listen to them. She doesn’t tell her characters what to do, she lets them tell her what she wants them to do and who they are and by really listening, she creates really honest characters who people love.
